The 3.0 has the same power, they lied on paper due to introduction of RS. The 3.0 is also much better enigne in every way, you can get it in manual form and with sport diff.
Have an RS4 (2015 B8) which I retrofitted a wireless apple CarPlay into … took about an hour and cost 300 quid … hasn’t missed a beat in 18months, interior is basically the same and rock solid … with that upgrade is a great place to be
Ah that’s awesome 🙌 thanks for letting us know 🤙
Hey man, do you have a link for this unit? I have a 2015 B8 RS4 too - been thinking about an appleplay upgrade....
I bought one a couple months ago. Similar spec to this one, later model, diff interior, sports differential. This car has been immensely fun and surprisingly fast. It's easy to drive smooth, and also (almost too) easy to drive fast. Audi was ahead of the curve with their interior; its really a lovely place to be. Only downside is that *when* stuff breaks, be prepared to pay for it. But like all german cars, they're pretty well built! Overall things to watch out with owning them, Coolant reservoir cracks, and Carbon cleaning will need to be done at some point. Also one minor nitpick I have that no one else has. It is nearly impossible to see curbs. The curves of the car make it impossible to have any visibility of curbs, so be very careful street parking. Overall, I love it and hope to own it for as long as I can.
Nice review. Exhaust is AWE now AEW. I have an 08 S5 6MT. Most costly maintenance is anything to do with motor. If you are not a DIY guy, you are paying a pretty penny to sort it out. Overall this car is loads of fun. Not as quick as my STi or my 335i but it is way more fun. V8 sound is intoxicating with the right mods. Lastly owning this vehicle is going to eat through gas worse than a turbocharged vehicle. Be lucky to get 200 miles to the tank. As a daily it is an expensive fuel sucking demon. Overall it will drive through any weather easily even when your tires are at 3/10 tread left. My only gripe ever about this B8 is that it didn't have a pull lever e-brake.
I’ve been following your brilliant channel for a long time and always wondered why the S5/RS5 hadn’t been considered. As an rs5 owner, I’ve found the car to be so so practical as an everyday driver. It has all the presence and style you could ever wish for, especially in RS guise. I commute into London in it and get about 28mpg, the auto gearbox is a must for me - manual is great for a Sunday blast but the auto much better for the busy roads down here in Kent. the rear seats are actually usable and the boot is a decent size. It’s just a brilliant all rounder. It’s on 99k miles now so I’ve had to spend some decent money replacing the DRC suspension with a much better KW coil over setup - factor this in, as it’s only a matter of time before the DRC starts to leak. I ended up replacing both high pressure fuel pumps at 90k miles. But other than that, it’s been absolutely fine. I love mine. In fact, sod it… I’m gonna take it for a Sunday blast right now 😂
Amazing 🙌 they are fantastic cars always loved the A5 platform 👌
Hi there I found a trick to drive down the M-1 and park in Brentcross and take the tube into central london so exactly 20 miles each way from Hemel to London via M1 as stated, if I was to purchase a S4/S5 what are we talk currently have an A3 sline 2.0 tdi 148hp diesel 2011 and I routinely get around 58mpg each way . so the cost is pretty low, Now I wfh but it's likely my next contract job will be in office or at the very least 3x a week, so whats the monthly cost on running these cars in terms of petrol I won't be zooming down, I'm not a hardcore car geek so I'm reliant on a good mechanic i know works privately and he has access to audi dealership to repair my car which is great! so question is would I be stupid to essentialyl upgrade to a true sports car or should I just stick to A4/A5 range as I wish to upgrade from the A3 due to ULEZ.
I don't find myself commenting on videos all that much, but man... your energy & enthusiasm just kicked it off for me from the very beggining!
Sure, this video might not be of the highest possible production level, nor am I saying it needs to be, but there's just something about a true enthusiastic presenter like yourself that is so very missed in today's time of car reviews.
Great pace, great voice clarity and loudness, well done review.
Cheers mate!
Thanks man! Very kind comment! I love what I do, still learning and trying to get better :) appreciate you taking the time to give this great feedback
I upgraded my infotainment system to handle apple car play Android auto. It is a must have for these cars. This cost was around $300 US. installation was pretty straight forward. I found the older oem system to be lacking In control. The newer units can even be had in a touch screen.
Great review Ben, your videos have really improved recently. Pacing, cinematography, content , all of it is better than a lot of channels with way more subscribers.
Keep it up dude!
Thanks man 🤙
I love my S5. When i bought it, it needed some TLC, but the price was right Nd it became my sobriety project/emotional support vehicle 😂 its not a car for everyone, and im no longer at the age where i feel the need to race everyone who lines up with me on the freeway, but damn is this car fun to drive! I like that its modern enough to handle my iPhone holder/charger (which is ALL i need) and plays DVDs, its retro enough like he said, where theres still the car+driver intimacy without all the electronic anti-fun systems that plague many later model cars. Maintenance is to be expected, and if youre not on top of it like recommended, then of course one issue will follow another, because the parts are all made to work as a UNIT, not some parts this year and others maybe summer. In 8 months, ive replaced the entire fuel system, thermo, hoses, coolant expansion tank, and a 1400 dollar service at audi. Im not complaining, i knew what i signed up for, and they’re high performance parts which, and that just makes it closer to new for ME. You get out of it the same love that you put into it, like most cars, (mine needed a LOT) 7,500 dollars later, shes now on coilovers, 20’ racing wheels and tires, awe track exhaust with non resonated downpipes, s-flo carbon intake kit, and shes getting her walnut blasting and tune in the next few weeks (shes on my channel page) im gonna hold onto this one, RS5 coming soon. See you gentlemen out there, when i see the four rings in my mirror, youre good with me, merge over in front of me brothers 😂
V8, AWD, 6spd. Nothing else checks all these boxes. I'll never sell mine.
👌😎
What’s it like for petrol on average?
@@gamerxpro4999 It really depends on how and where you drive it. On the highway @75 mph I average 22-23 mpg.
I've had it up higher around 24-25 mpg @ 60-65 mph.
It goes down significantly if you're sprinting around town listening to the glorious exhaust tune. It will also go down if you neglect regular maintenance.
Selling mine now, pain in the ass if you ask me
Let me guess.. when you bought it it already had an aftermarket chinese grille?
I have a sprint blue 2009 S5 and the obligatory manual gearbox... I bought (rescued) this car from a Citroën dealership as someone criminally traded it in against one.
Since owning my S5 , I've had a kid... and STILL managed perfectly, I even managed to do the NC500 in my S5 with my wife and at the time 7mo son WITH A CAR FULL OF CAMPING GEAR !
I love my car and I will continue to throw my wallet at it
Awesome 🙌😎
Hi Ben hope your doing good.
I loved the video. Love the color of that car inside and out.
Stay safe and take care.
Hope you are well too Frank 🤙
@@dadcars Thanks Ben. I'll be better when I get to Sussex, Hastings UK for vacation on Monday. Not looking forward though to driving on ice on roads and snow when I get there. Lol.
Just brought one or these, in Suzuka gray with red leather heated seats and I love it! 😍
Awesome! I always wanted one with red interior 😅👏
I've been looking for a nice car, with that V8 sound. And so drawn to the S5. Or even a Rs5. Does shock me the road tax. Its crazy how expensive they are. My skyline & V8 Soarer are less than that. But the S5 is seriously a lovely looking car and so tempted by so many reviews on them
Just make sure you get it looked over before you buy 🤙
@dadcars many thanks fella. 😊👌
I was very tempted by one of these I love a v8. but wanted 5 doors and more speed so got a s4 instead, the supercharger is a adequate substitute for a v8
I’m looking at buying here in Australia a 250k km old S5 manual myself.
Engine and gearbox has had a full rebuild with receipts too
Without a doubt future classic in this combo V8 with manual trans. love it ! ..also if you know what you are doing, a lot of space for tuning and making it a true monster.
👌😎
I've had both the B8.5 and B8 S5 and I prefer the V8, only I liked the supercharger whine with the forge filter on it, so I'm in the middle of fitting a custom supercharger to my B8 now, will have best of both then 🙂
I've had one for 14 years. One report estimates over $1000 per year average maintenance. Although very reliable the maintenance has been about what was estimated. It's a dream car for sure. Maintenance can be a nightmare. The last time it was in the shop at 80k miles the bill was $8500. This was all standard maintenance and replacement of worn out parts. It has never left my stranded but stuff does need fixing sometimes. If you love this car buy it. You can fix it yourself but be prepared, parts are exorbitant. Small hoses and plastic parts can cost over $100 and larger sophisticated parts can cost over $1,000.
My gosh 8500$ what parts where these😳
I agree the first gen a5 and s5 are best looking. I remember first time seeing one in person it was a blue convertible sounded beautiful
👌😎
I've had two and loved them, 6sp manual. Should not have sold the second as it was rare spec too. Fuel consumption isn't even that bad, for comparison a Golf R with half the number of cylinders does 6MPG more than the S5. Worth it for the sound alone.
Always been a good looking car and those seats are so comfy
😙🤙

When thinking of future Dadcars for me Audi hasn’t been a brand that sticks out due to how you said, they are a great all rounder. Unfortunately a jack of all trades and a master of none doesn’t make my short list, but that 4.2 V8 does make a lovely sound!
Thanks my man 🙌😊
Loving your videos mate

I got an a5 this same shape 3.0 tdi v6 quattro, thing looks amazing & good to drive
Love my s5 for all the reasons you have stated! And the noise is intoxicating. Perhaps one day the price will go back up on these🤷♂️
i have this car with the manual trans too so timeless i love this car
👌 fantastic choice!
Been wanting a v8 for a while now and ive always overlooked these due to the 350 hp that it gives
Around this price point ive been looking at the jag xfr because of the 500hp it has.
I then got looking at the vauxhall monaro, something i stopped looking at due to its lower power figures but then came across a monaro vxr, around 400hp and looks amazing. Not too many around though and im starting to see issues pipnup on them that could be costly.
I did look at the rs5 but insurance is ridiculous on them, nearly a grand more than the other mentioned cars.
I then saw this vid and did a bit of research and realistically....where would i get to use the full 500 hp of a rwd jag?
The insurance on the s5 is pretty good.
5.1 0-60 isn't exactly slow and im sure some mikd tuning could work some magic.
Id definitely go manual in one with it being an option.
Who knows what il end up with but these 3 cars are the only ones on the radar for me in this price point
That’s it I’m buying one. Been my favorite car since they came out but I forgot about them until now
🤙
Great car! Very expensive to maintain but such a blast to drive, especially with the 6 speed manual gearbox!
I don't remember exactly what the bluetooth phone pairing procedure is on the S5 but I typically resort to TH-cam or your owners manual whenever I do something like that. I remember some of those earlier systems had you go through a bunch of hoops to pair it to the car.
The only thing is, as an S5 v8 owner you need to be prepared for maintenance costs, I am about to sink a grand on the oil cooler and cooling system. There is also common issues with the intake manifold flaps on the 08/ early 09 ones, the High pressure fuel pumps and the control arm bushings
Not wrong. Had my ‘09 since May, and on top of the 20mpg 99 ron fuel & the £60+ per month tax, I’ve spent £600 on a new aircon sensor, rear pads and window regulator. It’ll probably bankrupt me eventually, but I bloody love it 😂
Yep, a new inlet manifold is £3000 for the part ALONE
@@aivarusk218 my IM has buggered up. Fortunately I can buy a new upper actuator as it has failed solenoid side

Had mine two years Great car but the maintenance side of things can be expensive,I do most of the work myself and can be a pain to work on but worth it.
Thhaaanks meeen finally somene that get it.
My Guy!!!! i have been waiting for a youtube video that will do this car justice. Everyone else undermines it so much ("why didnt you buy an rs4", "the rs5 is better").... screw it... i had mine for a while now and a 2009 manual model. Granted im from South Africa. But i do love my car and i share the sentiment. They are amazing and doubt ill sell mine until the engine gives up, even then ill still do my best to revive it.
Couple of things to note. If its got an oil leak, check the oil filter housing mount in the V. They are renowned for leaking oil there, leaking into the V below the intake and most mechanics will tell you front seal or rear main seal. It makes a range rover look nice if that happens, but its a 100 rand seal ($5) (4pound) part that looks like an 8 and its most likely where the oil is leaking. The rear main and front will be fine
Carbon, yoh... 100k km get it carbon cleaned. The s5 comes to life after that!!!
Shuddering clutch. Theres a mount you can buy from amazon, which fills in a spot on your gearbox mount and the shudder will stop. For some reason VAG Group made a plate for the spot between the mount and the gearbox and it will never be solved unless you fill the void with metal. Just look on amazon for s5 gearbox mount and you will see what i mean
Lastly the control arms. More than 100k km on the clock, the control arm bushings will be toast. Get those repaired asap and you will have the best car you ever owned as a cruiser, gt or sports car
I will never trade my car in for anything in the entire worls, its made me smile so much and brought me so many memories. Keep them alive, most parts are from an A5 where it will have no premium for RS parts. Clutch.... good lord you need a lot of socket extensions but you will be able to do it with some jack stands and a normal jack on a weekend. Dont let that scare you, the cart is worth it
Awesome comment! 🙌
How much did the carbon clean run you for and also did you take it to vagmotorsports or vagtuningsa for the carbon clean?
From SA looking to grab me one as well what’s your yearly maintenance cost?
I just noticed I literally have the same spec and color prestige package. But mine is carbon fiber interior trim and black dash trim not silver. That deep sea blue “pearl effect” is 🗿😮💨

Manuel Gearbox = Engagement and Driving Pleasure Bliss YESS!!

I have always maintained that if you can't find a really interesting car for less than £20k then you are not looking hard enough. I imposed the £20k ceiling back in the early 1990's and I have owned and driven a lot of fantastic cars since then: Audi Quattro Coupe, S2 Coupe, S4 Avant, S3, Maserati Karif, Ghibli GT, Ghibli Cup, Mercedes SL500, SL350, CL500, Jaguar XK8, XJS. In the main they were manuals and my daily driver remains a manual, now with 307k miles on the clock.
Yep sub 20k gets you a lot of car! If like me you always go for 15+ YO depreciated performance cars :) these S5s are half that though 👌
On the safety thing: are we at a stage where there needs to be two categories of NCAP? A car could be awful structurally but have enough safety tech to *look* a good safe car. I want to know, first and foremost, that if a crash occurs, the car is built to withstand it. Having the tech to prevent a crash is excellent and important but I think that is a second discussion.
Maybe I’m overthink it?
Yeah I started filming a video about this but just not got round to finishing it… I’d love to talk to an expert about it all.
Thanks!
Thank you very much! 😊🙌
@@dadcars Your welcome Ben.
I prefer my V6 Supercharged auto S5 :D
For the 1% of times I would like the manual, it's not worth it for the 99% of times that I wouldn't.
Great video though
I’m sure they are wonderful cars too 🤙
Hey Ben, did you find out who won the Golf, was it a subscriber?
You can see the winner on the website, sadly not a subscriber 🥲… fingers crossed for this one! 🙌
to be fair i think the SC V6 was used due to the hierarchy the R8 created, they didnt want to delude their Supercar when a car with the same engine but alot better practicality also existed at the same time
Im really into Audis i had A4 b5 and sometimes i drive brothers A6 3.0 Should I get V8 in manual or automatic? I not huge fan of hanging gears to be honest
Get a manual, more reliable than auto & more fun
I took one of these for a test drive before buying my 130i instead. It felt like such a lot of car for the money and a lovely interior. Ultimately I didn’t like the steering (maybe I should have given it more seat time going by what you said!), and the revs dropped really slowly for some reason! All round though I do like it. Great review.
🤙😊
putting it in dynamic mode tightens up the steering quite a bit. to help with the RPM, a lightweight crank pulley kit and flywheel make a pretty considerable difference.
@@tl7338 yeah lightweight flywheel makes the gearbox chatter though, but yeah I’m sure you could modify it to help reduce the inertia.
@@kip8790 I haven't heard of that being a thing with these.
@@tl7338 they all do to varying extents when you swap the dual mass flywheel for a single, lighter one. You are putting back in the torsional vibrations that the dual mass flywheel is designed to remove.

Hi Ben. Silly question but how do you justify paying more for road tax? I mean how do you come to peace with it? I've been trying to for the last two years but it still bothers me that I am paying more when I could/should? be paying less.
Yours,
A V8 Owner.
I just factor it all in, insurance, tax, servicing, fuel and maintenance then make an assessment on if I can comfortably afford to do it or not. I try not to think about it too much as the UK road tax system is very silly… my V8 is 05 😅
70 pounds a month given away to GOV....
There's only 2 things that made me choose a 335i instead. 1) £695 tax and 2) 6:48 listen to how the revs don't drop enough before you engage the next gear, that just annoys me! Otherwise what a stunning car and yes, totally like a European muscle car with a nicer interior for half the price.
That's user error. He needs more time with it. I daily a S5 and it's not a thing at all.
@@tl7338 Yes it is, Audi used a too heavy flywheel. You can choose to shift slower to compensate, but where's the fun in that?
Good video 👍🏾😍👌🏾
Glad you enjoyed 🙌
If you think that sounds good, you should hear mine with a 1 of a kind custom nascar exhaust 💪🏾😮💨
For the price it’s definitely a car not to overlook. But, when you get into the RS5 after driving S5, it’s night and day. Yes, you don’t get a manual in the RS5, and the RS5 has a bit less low-down torque than the S5, but the dual clutch is quite special as well.
Imo the S5 sounds way better, more of a muscle car but like you said it’s like night and day literally, that’s a popular saying for the two. RS5 track car wth F1 tones, S5 sports/street car with more muscular tones.
Mine has a rs5 full body kit
The S5 is indeed more fun to drive than the RS5. The RS5 has a nice engine and that spoiler + front fenders are goat. Besides that theres literally nothing the RS5 does better than a Manual S5. If you really want to compare both, as stupid as it seems. The RS5 is a great daily but as exciting as a dead horse, and the S5 V8 is the fun weekend car.
^ someone poor who can’t afford an RS5
@@10essee10titans You embarresed yourself twofold. Because 1) This has nothing to do with affording, its simply the more fun car and 2) i had a RS5 you idiot.
I had both.
It sounds good... But that is LITERALLY the only thing the V8 B8 can claim, over the V6T B8
I was genuinely looking forward to this review, because I have its BMW rival: a ‘58 plate 650i. Mine also has lots of rear space and IsoFix and I really appreciate BMW and Audi acknowledging that people can want a big V8 GT AND have kids they want to transport, it suggests to me at least someone in the design team wanted a special Dad Car.
I do agree Audi’s are a breath of fresh air; as everything else gets uglier and uglier, Audi’s are a timeless, subtle look.
The only thing I don’t like is it’s not easy to tell a basement spec A5 from S5, I just wish it looked a little more special but still retain Audi subtly. I do love a contrast interior though, it just makes everything feel more special.
I’m going drop a entry or two into the raffle. Do I need another V8 GT? Probably not. Do I want it anyway? Kind of…
😅🙌 yeah respect to Audi for making it so child friendly. I’ll review a 6 series eventually 😎
Can’t go wrong with a coupe

Is one of this with 80k miles on it worth it now days? Or am i going to be at the mechanic all the time?
80k isn’t a lot I’d say… get a PPI don’t on it 🤙
I'm thinking change my jaguar S type R for a audi S5 it's the manual that's making me do it
You’re saying buy a manual when you can buy and automatic and it’s still got paddle shifters. Either way you can shift gears at will..😐
A couple of known common issues with these cars are the timing chain tensioners which do wear out overtime and you have to replace the whole timing chain set. I believe that's an engine out job on this car because if I'm not mistaken these engines have the timing chain facing the firewall much like Saabs did back in the day. The other issue that these cars have is the oil filter housing which is located behind the engine often leaks and that's a pretty big job to replace that. Tyler Hoover from Hoovie's garage had one of these once and he had his trusted mechanic the car ninja address most of these and other issues. He also had the clutch replaced and some suspension work done as well.
Hi Ben! I have a b8 RS5, interested in featuring?

In the Uk will be over £700 car tax in April 2024.... i.e. a few days
The Rs is so expensive I've got an S4
I owned one for 3 years and to sum it up the Pros: that SOUND, the interior, the exterior (it looks amazing), manual gearbox, bags of torque.
Cons: the tax, around town abysmal fuel economy, the steering, feels very nose heavy, doesnt feel as fast as the specs suggest (and mine was carbon cleaned and serviced on the button). Most of all.. the maintenance costs, and repair costs when certain things go wrong are eye watering.
They’re lovely cars, but if you want something thats more engaging, more of a drivers car, more tuneable there are plenty of other options out there that cost far less to run and maintain.
I'm reaaaally considering buying one right now. I'm planning to use it as a daily, could you elaborate about the fuel consumption ? I've been reading 12l/100km which is "okayish" to me, is it really worse in practice ?
@@raidden-1583 I get a little worse than that with mainly 60kph town driving.
@@raidden-1583 I could never imagine daily driving this car, mine was just a weekend toy, but they are much better on fuel when doing a long drive of motorways and big open roads, I used to see 29-32mpg on a steady 60mph run. Quite unheard of on the later 32 valve engines. They were bombproof motors tbf. The earlier 40 valve 4.2s are a different story when it comes to chains and guides failing.
Not on this engine! Chain guides were upgraded for this engine. It's a solid unit. I'm on my 2nd S5 V8 and what fabulous machines they are.
@@ethanbailey7247what year did they move to 32 valve?

Different engine mate. No chain guide problems on these 👌
Until the timing chain stretches, then its an engine+gearbox out to replace all 4 chains, and while you are there replace the VVT on all 4 camshafts since they are also on the rear of the engine and they could go out. So then your "cheap" Audi S5 will be twice the price you have payed for it.
The chains on these engines are generally fine, the camshaft solenoids on the other hand are worth changing along with a host of parts while the engine is out .
The timing chains were not a problem on these S5s, its the older Audi V8s that suffered from this issue.
So you like a car you own. That's a first,
I don’t own this car 🤷♂️

@king-gq5qn I’d have to strongly disagree with that. I’ve had mine 3 years now on 89,000miles and the engine is still running strong. Keep them carbon cleaned and they run well. I use it as my daily everyday and give it some stick majority of the time and it has no issues. If you know someone having to change the engine 3 times in 5 years I’d say that would be down to the driver.
shhhh! Its a secret and you are letting everyone know about it. No one should buy a Audi S5 manual V8 car. Please leave them for me and my friends.
😅🙌
Tickets bought weeks ago. Let this car be mine🎟️👍
When your little girl is already sleeping and you fire youtube to see another bmw e63 650i video because you already decided that this is going to be your dadscar instead of audi s5 4.2, and you see that dadcars has just dropped another review 35 minutes ago to mess your mind again 🫣😫😂
😂😂😂… I’d love to review a e63 650i👌never driven one, I can confirm the 4.2 S5 manual is awesome! 🙌
@@dadcarsplease do the e63 review 🙏🙏🙏 there is no review like yours for that car out there and I still don't know if I would fit my 3 years old with child seat in the rear seat 🤔
@@maksymilianpiechota1213 if someone offers me one to review I’ll do it 💯 🤙
as a bmw guy i can confidently say you should go with the b8 s5. Trust me, the bmw will cost you similarly & give about the same headaches. 😊
@@shotty. so why should I pick s5 then if you are bmw guy?
