This Audi S5 was a real pleasure to drive. So much power in a car that looks fairly 'normal' in todays market. You can pick up one of these for less than £10k - for a V8! It is now definitely on my radar to pick one up in the future.

This was a golden era for cars, comfortable with all the tech you need. It makes me sad that this is 15 years old, I remember when these first came out and thinking what a great looking thing it was.
Shame that no one even buys cars like this anymore, everything has to be crossover.

Probably one the best looking Audi ever produced, the design of the car has aged so well with time. Completely agree with being the golden era cars where you get the best of both world, on one hand cars that have characters with wide choice of engine and the other one enough tech to keep you happy. Also the quality of materials used in those cars is way better than the cars of today

I own an '09 A5 S-Line. In that year, they used the 3.2 naturally aspirated V6, instead of the 2.0 turbo I4 of the later years. Mine has a six-speed manual transmission, and thanks to the S-Line package, improved suspension over the base A5. It is absolutely my favorite car I have ever owned, and now has a little over 190,000 miles on it. The absence of that beautiful V8 aside, it is a VERY similar car to the one reviewed here.
I absolutely agree that this was a great age for cars in general, and maybe for Audis in particular. I receive compliments on my car frequently, and everyone is surprised to learn how old it is! This includes the occasional police officer... As it happens, I drive with a little bit of enthusiasm sometimes. Last time I got pulled over, though, the officer let me off with a warning and a compliment for the car!
Great review. You've only made me want to move up from my A5 even more. Worth adding... in that first live-action Hitman movie, there is a scene where Agent 47 drives a silver S5, and he has a girl in the trunk (or, boot). So, it's a Hollywood-approved transportation option!

They're awesome cars, owned a S5 for 2 years now, great sound and looks. downside id say is just maintenance of when things go wrong, even though they share the same parts from other B8 models being suspension wise, it still comes out just shy of £500 pounds for everything when going to a garage. Fuel economy is just as you would expect, lucky to get 22 mpg driving around town, but the shear road presence the car has with a straight piped exhaust makes up for that.😄

Mine has a custom 1 of a kind nascar exhaust kit. Weighs just over 3k lbs, and has a centrifugal. Easily modifiable if you got the money to blow. Totally reliable if you do your due diligence and research. These cars are literally the ultimate sleeper. Never get pulled over even with my loud exhaust. Don’t have tints also because I don’t want to draw wrong attention. Probably also why I don’t get pulled over lol. It’s a lot of fun and faster than any RS5 on the road.

I honestly think car design peaked in the late 00's to early 10's. They're new enough to either have all the tech you need or can easily be upgraded with modern systems, cars looked great and age really well, especially a lot of Audi's from this time such as the S5 (and Mk 2 TT), they are really practical and weren't hugely heavy, so that 350bhp goes a LONG way, that is still quick by 2024 standards.
I own a V8 2+2 GT and the S5 is one of the few that ticks all the same boxes as mine; practical, spacious, surprisingly good on fuel when cruising but still genuinely fast when you want it to be.
My only criticism of the S5 is that the styling is so subtle it doesn't differentiate enough from standard A5's. I wouldn't want huge bonnet bulges or silly wings or massive side skirts, but just be a little bit sharper. And even then, it's only a minor criticism because a sleeper-car is a very cool thing.

Go ahead and buy one! If you like engine codes, rattling engine, oil consumption, coolant leaking, bad engine mounts, bad gearbox, electrical faults, it has it all! VAG!

I think the only performance cars that might be slightly more powerful than this one are the E60 M5 with the manual gearbox of course, and perhaps the Dodge Hellcat cars with the Hemi V-10 engines. Not sure if those cars made it to the UK but they are certainly fun American muscle cars to drive. A friend of mine's late father once had a V12 Jaguar circa 1970s-80s with a 5 speed manual transmission, which was super rare for it's time. That one I'm told was very fast as well.

We all know there are much more modern cars out there with loads more power and tech but I'm rather struggling to fully understand what it is that they offer over and above many of these older vehicles on the public road apart from showing off the size of your bank account. The increasingly ubiquitous 4 litre turbo/auto gearbox combo is obviously fast and efficient but stale and characterless.

I would love an S5 but many owners have had catastrophic engine failures due to the cam chain components breaking and falling into the engine killing the car, amongst other issues such as electrical issues etc. Like many other premium / luxury cars which can be bought for peanuts buyers are still running a 60k, 80k or 100k+ car which has running costs and repair bills to match.

@@adamwells278yes I have the same one. Unfortunately mine was never ending with problems all in all I put more than I should of. But I had carbon build up which bent one of the valves and cost me just over £2500. The alternate then went shortly after, and the 2nd gear synchro went so decided to get the gearbox rebuilt. In 3 years I’ve done just over 3000miles with the car and it’s cost me around £9000 in maintenance. I think I just got unlucky with mine but it is basically a new car now and I’ve replaced pretty everything that commonly goes wrong on these. It is forsale if you decide for one in the future. Lovely cars to own but unless they have been maintained and the common issues are fixed they can be a money pit.

The cost of any major repairs on this car will bankrupt you and probably exceed the purchase price.

Should you do a crap in the toilet and not flush the plug ? The answer to that question is the same as the answer to yours Lucy.

S5 means having a big funding for repairs cause every single spare part which is directly related to the S5 is becoming really expensive and on top of that you can expect spare part shortages soon or now already which means: no mor spare parts available which means you need to find those from the scrapyards.
I bet you never had owned any of the S models from Audi cause usually everyone knows about the risks since the first had been introduced back then developed by Porsche, not Audi. And your S5 is a high risk car which usually is only bought by mechanics that have dealt with these cars before.
Look for a lot younger cause once you run into issues you will learn what it means in 2023 or 2024 not to get a part anymore. Do not forget that this is just an Audi and not a Mercedes with all the tradition and long spare part availability. Your car is on the edge of running out of spare parts and no further production.
And : the usual engine rebuild or repair is quite often higher than what you pay for these that is why most of these get exported into the east or russia .
