That's My Dad Jonathan French on the drums 🥁...He's Killin it...Yea Dad Love You💕💕💕 and We are Sooo Proud of You and he can still drum like that to this day💯💯💯
Jon is still Killin it on the drums, and it is such a pleasure to play with him on stage. I think it is Phil Upchurch on the other guitar, and I listened to him over and over on vinyl in the 70's; he really influenced me, as well as Curtis. Strange fate that what I was into 50 years ago is what Jon was actually playing, and that we sit on stage together now. Jon is the Original Groove Drummer!

the 70's was the golden age of R&B Soul. what has happened to mainstream 'black' music is an absolute tragedy and is an over all reflection of the destruction of a significant portion of the black community in america.
We can deal with rockets and dreams, but reality? What does it mean? We continue on with our grand schemes whilst trampling down on broken dreams, no matter who black or white, we've common weaknesses to fight...and that's ourselves..

I couldn’t agree more. LOVED Curtis and his music has never stopped bringing me joy. I was lucky enough to briefly meet him when I was 10 (58 now)long story short he was late for his concert but stopped to sign my Superfly album. So did Henry. Amazing night. Put on headphones and turn up the album. You won’t be sorry.
I wish I could get it LOUDER .. i can never get it loud enough. and i'm in my 60's in the 70s in my head. soul, r+b, funk, rock, roll, THE BLUES. Reality. My friend Frankie is dead. He ran his life and then he died. There was no need for him to die. You can't be in 'recovery' and then use and die. That's not how it works. There are no old junkies, just dead ones. You either get clean, go to prison or die. You choose. Heroin only wants EVERYTHING including your soul. don't let the devil win. I took back my life. It's not perfect, but then nothin' ever is.
Simply stated...it DOES NOT GET BETTER THAN THIS! Curtis Mayfield was a baaaaaad man!!!! One of the absolute best to ever grace us with his artistry. RIP
One of the most unappreciated artists of all time. Great music with biting social commentary. Glad HBO's series "The Deuce" used his music as the opening theme. Talk about street credit...
One great mind! Guys like him, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix should be immortal!! So calm and yet so furious! You can't help loving his music... Thanks for posting man!!
Sorry for all the messages but I have not heard this song in probably 30 years, and everything is coming back like yesterday. I am so freaking grateful for whoever recorded this performance so it wasn't lost

What a TREMENDOUS Band, WOW! To play a song in that fashion you need Master Musicians, INCREDIBLE! There are so many different sounds playing at the same time and they connect it all without tripping over each other, WOW! "But his hope was his rope and should have known it!" I could hear this song over and over for hours and never get tired of it!

The Bass Player, Joseph Lucky Scott was playing the hell out of this jam. Of course Curtis Mayfield was out of sight.

I remember this tune on the radio when I was a kid. Here I am at 51 and it's still some of the best funk.
The drummer is funky!

Freddies dead
That's what I said
Let the rap a plan
Said he'd see him home
But his hope was a rope
And he should've known
It's hard to understand
That there's love in this man
I'm sure all would agree
That his misery was his
Woman and things
Now Freddie's dead
That's what I said
Everybody's misused him
Ripped him up and abused him
Another junkie plan
Pushin' dope for the man
A terrible blow
But that's how it goes
A freddies on the corner now
If you wanna be a junkie, wow
Remember freddies dead
We're all built up with progress
But sometimes I must confess
We can deal with rockets and dreams
But reality, what does it mean
Ain't nothing said
'Cause freddies dead
Hey, hey
Love, love
Hey, hey
Yeah, yeah
Ha, ha
Love, love
Yeah, yeah
Ha, ha
Yeah, yeah
Freddies dead
All I want is some peace of mind
With a little love I'm trying to find
This could be such a beautiful world
With a wonderful girl
Why I need a woman child
Don't wanna be like freddie now
'Cause freddies dead
Hey, hey
Yeah, yeah
If you don't try
You're gonna die
Why can't we brothers
Protect one another
No one's serious
And it makes me furious
Don't be misled
Just think of Fred
Everybody's misused him
Ripped him up and abused him
Another junkie plan
Pushin' dope for the man
A freddies on the corner now
If you wanna be a junkie, why
Remember freddies dead
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
