Donnie Hathaway was a genius the likes of which the world will never see again.. I was fortunate to hear him in real time - never saw this video...I knew he was `great but his playing here is other worldly and his band is ridiculous! ALL TIME LEGEND
I never seen this footage of Donny Hathaway. Just happened to click on this, so glad I did. Dude was beyond talented, one of the best voices ever recorded. I really wish I was old enough to see him live back then.
Phenomenal piece of work ❤❤❤ The 70s was IT with live concerts and great music. I lived in Washington, DC during Donny’s time at Howard Univ; and seeing him and Roberta Flack perform together was absolutely out of this world!!!!
Heard this version in a club in Hamburg Germany 1984,I was eighteen then ...took me to with all its soulpower right into the heaven of funk. Most outstanding
I studied every note he sang on his Best Songs album. Tried to cop it note for note as a singer. Listened to it for years and years over and over. Still do sometimes. He's one of my favorite singers of all time.
Scrolling through TH-cam shorts at 1am last night, I stumbled upon this set. 2am I was still there watching the short video amazed, full of goose bumps and shivering with excitement every time I re-watched it. This morning I have watched this full video on repeat for hours. Late to this party and now knowing what an influence this genius has had on the music I love it amazes me that I have not found him sooner. RIP Donny!
He was and is a musical legend and his music will live on forever. Donny had the voice of an angel and the talent of a genius that touched your soul, heart and spirit. You didnt just listen to his music , you felt it. I just wish that he could be here still singing his wonderful songs. So heartbreaking that he suffered so much towards the end of his life. Can you imagine what his gospel music would have sounded like ? Wow ! May the Lord bless you Donny.

It's really hard to pick a favourite part of this particular live version of 'The Ghetto', but Donny"s vocal return at 9:10 is just the most soulful sound I can think of. Absolutely amazing as everyone here seems to agree!
A great vocal moment as well a great moment of Donny showcasing his performance prowess; notice how he pushes the mic closer before he belts so he's able to better project his voice.
At the beginning when he sings, "Don't you know that's alright, yeah!!" It took me back to sitting next to the mothers/grand mothers in church, and every time they spoke during the preacher's sermon, it would come out in song, just like that! I appreciate that through his music, he is giving everyone the opportunity to know that feeling of the black southern church experience, and being a little kid and sitting up under that grandmother with big/soft arms that shook and woke you up after you had fallen asleep on one of them, because she had to wave her fan and sing back at the preacher! All of his moans, the wails, the "Mmmm hmmm", all of it, comes from having that type of background. So glad we have this recording to enjoy. That experience is an American tradition which belongs to us all. Even if everyone has not lived it, we all have grown up and seen it somewhere in movies or on television, so it is OUR experience. Donny Hathaway gave everyone a VIP seat in the pews.
I can Remember THIS...A REAL JAM SESSION....REAL MUSICIANS. A THING OF THE PAST. I MISS DONNY. HE WAS A MASTER ON THEM "KEYS" SHO NUFF NOW !!!!! 🎹🥁🎸❣💋❣

I have this Cd These Songs Live For You And More. I was a huge Donny Hathaway fan as a teenager. I remember when he completed his suicide. I laid across my bed and wept!!! I still play his music regularly to this day!!!
best groove i’ve ever heard. doesn’t get better.
I miss them ALL... OMG. I remember when this came out. Yes, I'm in my 70's from back-in-the DAY and this was the JAM. Yes. It was!
It sure was! We played the grooves out of this record!❤😂❤
The groove in this is so incredible! Incredible musicians ! I can't belive this is what music used to be like. WOW!
Donny is incomparable, his version of “song for you “ is sublime.
That is the truth. His duet with Roberta Flack on where is the love is priceless too.
Donny was a musician of a talent that there will be no other. His genius is unprecedented. Never to be duplicated.
I just had no idea about this kind of talent and showmanship. My mind is blown. What a groove!
When I first heard this I ran to pick up the album and played the rings off it back in 71!!!
You know when a guy sounds THIS FANTASTIC on a live show his voice, undeniably, goes down in history as one of the greats.
And major props to the band.
Go listen to jelous guy a john lennon cover. It gets me everytime like i want to fall in love and die at the same time. He really took it to next level in that live performance ❤
That was a heck of a performance!
His daughter is a phenomenal singer Lela Hathaway he was a wonderful musician ❤
one of the best things I have ever seen
Idk who the four solitary nimrods are that disliked this performance, but I think you four need to get your ears checked, cuz that right there, was pure, powerful, and perfect vocal prowess and musicianship. Don't ever disrespect this unparalleled talent, that literally inspired a whole generation of artists and continues to, and if you don't know why, I'd suggest you either go back and rewatch this performance, particularly the 9:09-20 or better yet, check out the man's catalogue.
Nimrods..fits very Well..🤣
Love ❤️ this man 👨 and his music. I did have a chance to see him before he left us. Best Show ever.
Who said something negative? They need at least a punch in the leg, geeze. lol ......They trippin'.
Donnie Hathaway was a genius the likes of which the world will never see again..
I was fortunate to hear him in real time -
never saw this video...I knew he was `great but his playing here is other worldly and his band is ridiculous!
ALL TIME LEGEND
true that
I'm still listening in 2024🤠
Me too here with joy in Japan!!
Same from Greece
Oh yeah
Since day one... early 70's and a bad lil shut yo mouth 🕶️💪✍️
Right you are its bang on
9:13 perfection. That lift in the voice and then the moving scale down of it 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 His tone is one in a zillion
I've had to go back and rewatch that so many times, only he could pull that off
I never seen this footage of Donny Hathaway. Just happened to click on this, so glad I did. Dude was beyond talented, one of the best voices ever recorded. I really wish I was old enough to see him live back then.
Or travel back in time 😁
Just one of the best soul voices ever!
Phenomenal piece of work ❤❤❤ The 70s was IT with live concerts and great music. I lived in Washington, DC during Donny’s time at Howard Univ; and seeing him and Roberta Flack perform together was absolutely out of this world!!!!
Don't forget. Didn't have to 💨💨💨💨💨💨💨
The best male vocalist that ever lived in my opinion!!!!!!❤
We have Stevie Wonder still
That was one of the most remarkable music footages I've ever seen and heard regardless of genre. Simply outstanding.
Most certainly.
Heard this version in a club in Hamburg Germany 1984,I was eighteen then ...took me to with all its soulpower right into the heaven of funk. Most outstanding
Bot. The "heard regardless of the genre" tips you off.
Leon Russell is one of my favorite writers and when he handed a song for you to Donnie it changed my life and made me feel better
RIP Donny!
You are right on time shugga 🥂
God needed you to hear this at that appointed time!! Welcome 🎉🫶🏽
My head is still rocking. Wish my Dad was alive to see this. Knowing he probably already had lol.
I was 5 years old, thank you ❤
He was and is a musical legend and his music will live on forever.
"Everything is everything"! The man was & still is an amazing musician. First time I hear this version, even better than his other one that I know.
Agree. I also enjoyed it a lot. Big thank you to everybody who saved this incredible footage and made it available. A time machine!
One of the most outstanding performances I've ever seen. I never knew this footage existed. I am so glad I got to live these ten minutes of my life to see this band.
For my friend Gary, who turned me on to "Donny Hathaway Live". I wish he was here to see this performance. R.I.P.
Never heard the original. Only the Too short version And just to think I ended up here randomly 🤔 So glad i did ❤💪🏿 5:10 Omg. I played snare drum. But the congos and that cow bell 💪🏿
His voice moves my soul. I was just born in 1970. I hear his music today and wishing could have saw him live. It was ALWAYS something about when he wore that hat . Thank GOD he had someone to carry on his beautiful voice his beautiful and talented daughter... e
Sleep in Paradise sir....
I too was born in 70 but I was lucky enough to have folks who taught me what good music is. Nothing beats the 1970’s music!!!
i was sooo lucky to be a kid and hear this playing on mom & dad's magnavox console back in the 70s. Hearing it now at 61 feels like a soundtrack to the past. I miss those times...good & bad.
Thank God I grew up in this Era of music 🎶 Donny is a legend 🙌🏿 🙏🏾 ❤️ and his music will last forever. Lalah is the frosting on the cake, what a voice 😍!!!
OMG...yes she does🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

@@brawlnation5194 Those were the days. I believe that 70's decade was the most Loving and the Best Music on Long Playing albums!!
🤗😘🎹🔊🎼🎸🎷🎶🎺
@@brawlnation5194 Yes! Living in Philly back in the 70s.
@Brawl Nation
I'm 66 and grew up in Buffalo. Same scene lol. Best music ever.
I don't need any film or whatever. I was there in person at the Troubadour, when Donny Hathaway sang this song. Ashford and Simpson were the opening act. Nothing anybody can tell me about visualizing, hearing, talking about or recognizing about Donny Hathaway.

I AM 76 Years old ❤😊
... YOU'RE STILL A " YOUNG-TIMER".. GREETINGS FROM BRADFORD WEST YORKSHIRE.... ""FEELING DA RIDDIM"" 🏴🌄🌄🌄 2:47
I am 49 years old. This song has so much soul and drive ,the conga /cb solo is incredibly tight... it's hypnotizing...As an audio-engineer these days , I make a deep bow for the musicians and both the recording /mixing techs ..It sounds so good..still..
😮wow it’s awesome the best song …music yet 😊
I am an oldie but goodie 79 ❤albums of
All the crew of the golden days 😊
48 and can’t agree more
Reaches for the cowbell at 6:44, steps up, hits it a couple times off beat, then syncs magically with congas, so sweet
This performance is transcendental. I am in awe.
What an era of music the 60s and 70s were. So happy I lived through them.
FINALLY! FINALLY! FINALLY! I have been enjoying this song off-and-on over the decades since it came out in 1970!! I bought the LP back then. I've always wanted to see Donny Hathaway perform this song live. And to also finally see the percussionist, the superb Earl DeRoy, as well. WOW!! Never knew he was white which makes this a WOW WOW!. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Seeing this is like a dream come true.
Same here
Also, I think the drummer is Fred White, and I am surprised that he was left-handed.
@@zenhippie2011 Fred White of Earth Wind and Fire? He was definitely lefty but would have been only 15.
@@markscountlessbarks
No doubt.
I remember this dude; back in the Day you could hear a long jam like this on commercial radio, especially late at night; great stuff here!
What an amazing musician, what an enormous musical talent, what a hypnotic trip for the ears.
Love your comment!😊❤🎹
I’m 29 years old & was born in 1995 but Donnie Hathaway is one of my favorites Musicians & singers of all time I play his music almost everyday & it calms me down especially at work & he has the greatest live album of all time. He so underrated
See only we get this who was back in these wonderful times!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽😍
I've jammed on this groove so many times in the last 50 years . A personal favorite of mine .
holy moly the groove!?!?!?!?!?! the class, the dignity is supreme. What a champion this guy is! there are no words to convey what DH is doing here, what He is speaks so loud you cannot ignore what He is saying.
They vibrate as one at a frequency that quite literally feed our souls for years to come. What an amazing performance.
Musical GENIUS!!! Donny Hathaway inserts 100% SOUL into his timeless tunes! Big Apple cap further defines his talented persona. How blessed we were to have him and his music will stay in our hearts forevermore.
Hello 👋 Wendy, how are you ding? hope you are fine. I'm Keating woodman and am form Denver Colorado, where are you from? you seem like a real country girl
This is a trip
This is COOL! I discovered Mr. Hathaway on an episode of “Unsung”. I decided to research his music and i liked it! This performance is a chance to see and hear Mr. Hathaway in his prime. He was a great singer but he was also a great musician.
Keep digging; so much great stuff out there
Ive been looking for this video for years, all I ever found was audio versions.... Thanks for the upload, a legend for sure, RIP Donny..
Sweet memories, I was a child. The best music to grow up listening to.
Back to a time when it was all about talent. Donnie is a groove master talent. Conga dude on fire and guitarist and bass killing it
Pulls a case out with a cowbell in it.. a single drum stick. Class🔥⛳
I was 10 years old when this song came out! My uncle used to play it all the time at his house!!
