Two years before his death from heroin, I walked into my uncles room (I was ten years old at the time). He usually had his door locked but that day it was left ajar and I could hear this song pulsing from inside the bedroom. When I walked in he was lying in bed, mouth open and eyes staring at the ceiling while this song was throbbing in the background. I said hello and a few seconds later his bloodshot eyes rolled slowly over to me and he rasped out something back at me. It scared me at the time so I ran out crying, and my dad told me my uncle was just sick that day. I saw him a few hours later, and he was back to his mellow self and apologized for scaring me. Well, sure enough, two years later he overdosed and passed away. Sometimes when I visit my grandmothers house, I sit on the couch by the stairs, and I can still hear this song growling from his now-empty room. Such a beautiful song, one of the strange but gentle gifts my uncle left me before he passed... before heroin used him up.

Dude this hits home with my I first heard this song being played by my dad and his band in 1999 n it has always stuck with me, when I'd go to his shows I'd ask him "play the use me song"
only comment showing love to the guitarist. It's gotta be the best thing about this performance, considering everyone sounds just as good as they did or better than they did on the record, but there's practically no lead guitar. That guitar is great in this and I wish the studio recording had some guitar like that.
It seems like he plays the standard riff for the first chorus after Withers sings "until you use me up", then plays variations on that riff until the next verse, while the keyboardist stays more true to the riff. The interplay is awesome. Or did I get chorus and verse reversed? I'm an amateur with music theory.
That drummer is cool. He could do damn near anything and look cool doing it. This song highlights a truth about men that all women should heed. If you keep a man loved up, not only is he a lot less likely to mess around on you, he will do damn near anything you want him to.
The Live version is so different from the official version, it's subtle and groovy and all the instrumentals just seem to gel together so well. I'm lovin' the amount of effort and creativity put into this. It's rare to see a live performance being so perfect.
you're perfectly right. I heard this song in a funky compilation and didnt know it was the live version. Its very different. And better than studio version. BTW listen to TTD'arby - Turn the page, - the live version is the one I like the most. Like in this case.
Unbelievable. Legend isn't the correct terminology he is beyond a legend. A legend of legends may he rest in peace. Everything he touched was a classic top tier hit. Well played Bill. RIP.

It's gotta be the best thing about this performance, considering everyone sounds just as good as they did or better than they did on the record, but there's practically no lead guitar. That guitar is great in this and I wish the studio recording had some guitar like that.
I'm with you -- who is that? His playing is so distinctive, and it's really clear in the mix.
@@danielseltzer_nyc it's Benorce Blackmon, shame he doesnt even have a wiki page.
He fills the space so beautifully. I LOVE this player! He builds it harmonically so perfectly!
If you keep a man loved up, not only is he a lot less likely to mess around on you, he will do damn near anything you want him to.
the guy on lead guitar is KILLING IT
Yeah as a guitarist I'm surprised there aren't more comments. The lead's fill and backing is basically magic.
Totally and I'm sorry to plead ignorance on this, but who is that dude? RIP Bill. So much soul.
Man yes he is! He makes this whole arrangement pop
@@ryanmarzano209 I believe it's Withers' long-time guitarist/collaborator, Benorce Blackmon? Yeah, tasty guitar licks for sure! RIP, Mr. Withers.
@@ryanmarzano209 Benorce Blackmon
the drummer is like the coolest man alive
The Live version is so different from the official version, it's subtle and groovy and all the instrumentals just seem to gel together so well. I'm lovin' the amount of effort and creativity put into this. It's rare to see a live performance being so perfect.
you're perfectly right. I heard this song in a funky compilation and didnt know it was the live version. Its very different. And better than studio version. BTW listen to TTD'arby - Turn the page, - the live version is the one I like the most. Like in this case.
Grey whistle test had some great live performances from this era if you ever wanna check it out, had a ton of great acts perform
CRUZ3 hands down the number one “better live version than the original” on my list. They keep it all so cool it’s inhuman
Good Morning!! I 'am Mexican, When was child, I listened, Use me.RIP. Bill.
If we could all be as happy as that drummer life would be a lot easier.
Everybody’s on about the drummer when they’re all equally chill, equally good at what they’re doing.
Cooler than the flip-side of a pillow..
Hello Eileen how are you doing!!

But not as cool as this drummer.
I like that.
RIP Bill Withers and Stuart Scott, two gentlemen I dug the most!

A humble musical genius, created inspiring, positive, funky grooves, timeless songs that everyone can sing and move along to. RIP Mr. Withers!

One of the greatest performances of all time.
Bill Wither...simply a Legend.
Withers*
This is true
Unbelievable. Legend isn't the correct terminology he is beyond a legend. A legend of legends may he rest in peace. Everything he touched was a classic top tier hit. Well played Bill. RIP.
the best!
And he often did it in about 2.5 minutes. Grandma's Hands and Better off Dead are both very short.
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 not of this earth. People like that seem to come every so often
This song never gets old.
One of my favorite songs. Shout out to my dad for always playing the best music in his garage.
I love how the drummer sometimes seems like he's trying to fight his smile, but then it just comes out full force because he can't control his love for the funk
The drummer !!!

And now he is dead... But his music still. I did not meet him, and yet I feel like I'm losing a loved one. I growed up with his music. Thanks Bill.
I saw him.🤙🤙🤙🤙This song is unforgettable.❤️😇🌹
Brilliant song. It has a very smooth, but funky rhythm. The entire band's in the pocket, and he exudes a wonderful groove and vibe on this classic. R.I.P Bill.

The beauty of being a jock on the Radio is to be able to have this one on the playlist. This song not only made my day but it was a beautiful thing to know I made thousands of listeners days when I played it over the airwaves. Bill Withers was the real deal.
WTF I’ve been rewatching this video for the past 11 years and I just now liked it. SHAME on me😓
Nobody makes quality music like this anymore
That's raw talent. No gimmick
That is just so good! Five musicians in one sublime groove. Gotta love Bill!
I don't know what better...
The drummer's super coooooooool demeanor, smile, vibe and funk or
_His super cooooool striped jacket AND pants!!_
Thank you to him for making our lives better, and thank you to his family and friends to lending him to the world for that purpose. He leaves good vibes in each one of us experiencing his art.

Bob Bryant Very well said Bob Bryant. I commend you.
A beautiful man. May he' soul rest in peaceful music!!😭
You think it's great listening to James Gadson play drums, imagine playing WITH him. What an honour it was. I also got to meet Mr. Withers and talk about all the robber barons we both dealt with coming up. A great guy.
Love this man's music
My favourite video on the whole of TH-cam. Watched this so many times now.
Try the live studio version of Stevie Wonder I wish. That will share half your views !
I've watched it a thousand times
Rest in Peace Bill😭💔
I have loved your music since a young girl of the early 60's
GOD be with You 🕊😇
Thank you for so many great memories and phenomenal music💘💘💘
Hello Debbie how are you doing!!
@@larrybill2661 Very blessed, thank you.. Hope the same for you and yours.
I haven’t seen them all but Bill never did this song exactly the same, because you don’t play this song, you create it from your soul. Every. Single. Time.
