This has long been my favourite of the time lapse videos, but never felt I could attempt it till now. Thankfully there are 7 videos on patreon to help us get there, I have to say you give us so much help with your tips and advice for a disproportionately small monthly outlay, it’s a privilege to be there with you and I know all the others feel the same. Thankyou for another wonderful drawing for us to do
Bless you Margaret, and thank you, I knew you liked this picture, and i hope you enjoy drawing it, thanks again for you kind words and generous support on Patreon. Its a pleasure to make these videos for you all.
Started drawing as a lockdown hobby and now I´m addicted and absolutely love the graphite poweder technique. Really good advice at the end. Will definitely take note of that suggestion. Hope you rersolved your issue with Derwent Pencils. 20 hours one one drawing rather than 20 hours on 20 drawings. Thanks!
I just got a batch of Graphite pencils on my 22nd birthday and I've never drawn using Graphite. This technique looks very interesting and I'm looking forward to giving them a go. Thanks for the video!
I recently got a 12-set (9B-H) of these "New and improved" Derwent Graphic pencils and only the B grade is the one I found quite scratchy (has minor impurities but haven't encountered an actual grit yet), while the rest seem to work as it should. I was bummed at first, but after reading the reviews on Amazon a while ago, I now felt somewhat lucky. Lucky for all the wrong reasons, because Derwent Graphic is an artist-grade pencil (it even says "PROFESSIONAL QUALITY" on the tin), so it shouldn't have such impurity issues in the first place.
I can remember when I saw this (alike) drawing for the first time. I couldn't believe that one can draw like this just with a graphite pencil, but for the last year I have had excellent teacher ( I hope you know him very well:) ) and now I know I can do it. Thank you so much Smoothie. As to Derwent pencils the only improvement I noticed in their new line is that they don't break so easily. That is all. They made a lot of advertisement on they new products like these pencils or new colour pencils but in my opinion ...they still stay far behind lot of others. Pity ... Excellent video !
Thank you Jerzy, I'm pleased you like this one and the first one, its one of my favourites , I'm starting to think the same about Derwent pencils too, seems like there quality control is slipping, I think there older pencils were much better, considering they have been making pencils since the 1800s you would of though they would of learnt how to eradicate grit from there pencils, not only that, 2 of the pencils in the set have leads that are so badly centred they're almost unusable.
I think they still make something which I believe put them in front of all competion. It's their hand cranked long point pencil sharpener. Outstanding. The only competion that I know of is Helix A5, but still Derwent is better.
Absolutely smatching and soo great you just made it out of hart ^.^ I am soooo jealous of your patience Smoothie!! Hahahahahaha ;) Thank you for sharing and all the love - Lineke
Thank you Linike, you have lots of patience too, your drawings are amazing and always a pleasure to watch your videos, take care my friend and I look forward to your next video :)
Excellent composition and demonstration. Throughout the demo you maintained an 8mm border around the entire work, without using tape or masking. What did you use, or was that portion edited out? Lastly what do you use to fix or preserve your graphite art? Cheers...!
Thanks for the comment Susan, I post all the tips and techniques in the longer video tutorials on my Patreon page, www.patreon.com/smoothie77 it would be great to see you there!
Hi smoothie :-) I have just bought the same pencils and found exactly the same problem with the grit. Very disappointed. But as per usual your drawings are amazing so good on you for persevering :-)
Hi Sam, sorry to hear you had the same problems with the pencils, Derwents quality control is poor in my opinion, the quality of these so called "new and improved" pencils is the worst I have ever seen.
Smoothie, do you use the fixative spray after you finish the work? And what about while you work so that the graphite doesn't get smudged? I would like to know if your do because I notice when I work with this dry media, like pastels, pencil and graphite, even charcoal, it would stain my other paper and my hands when I am working. Thank you for sharing.
It's unfortunate you encountered some problems with the new Graphic pencils. It was the other way round for me, the old ones had gritty bits in them. Gave up after 1 drawing, whereas the new ones worked perfect for me, competing with FC 9000, my favourites. I've always felt Derwent is very inconsistent in their quality. Every pencil line except the new graphic pencils I disliked. Others gave great reviews of them. But I likely won't go back to those since I have found similar types of pencils from other brands that I've had no problem with eg Faber-Castell
Yes I know what you mean, i have seen mixed reviews on all types of Derwent pencils, it is looking like there maybe some inconsistencies with there quality control, btw FC9000 are super pencils I have a set, lovely to work with.
So good smoothie - love your videos! Quick question for you, and I know you've covered this in one of your previous videos, but do you have a preference between the Faber Castell Perfection pencil 7056 (pink rubber) and the 7058 (white rubber) pencil eraser? I know you've mentioned the Koh-I-Noor being your favourite. I wish the Koh-I-Noor was easier to get hold of. Thank you.
Hi Graham, for graphite I prefer the 7056 pink eraser, I presume you're in the states if you can't get the Koh-i-noor eraser, it can sometimes be hard to get here in the UK too, but you will be fine with the 7056 its a good eraser.
That's good to know - thank you! Yes, I am in the states but originally from the UK - I'll see if I can get my family to send me some, if I can get it! I've been using the 7058 for graphite and I don't like it. Will definitely try the 7056! Thank you!
I enjoy your videos very much, they have been an inspiration to start me drawing again.I had a question, what brand of case are the Derwent pencils in? Thank you!
I have Derwent pencils, and yeah, some of them are gritty. I have had them for ages (20 years or more...) and started to use them again couple of months ago, thought it might have to do something with their age. But now I find this vid reporting the same problems....Think I'll get some others, steadler or something else.
Sorry Smoothie but you werent telling us what you were doing at the beginning, which is the crucial point. You spoke about Derwent pencils for 3 minutes...
Smoothie77 beautiful drawing. However I would like to say the comment about 20 hour drawing made me stop and think. Your drawings are beautiful... But they are often from Pictures... It is some much easier to draw from Pictures, and of course results are great. But it is major short cut and this would not be possible to do from Real life. I think your suggestion that its better to do one drawing in 20 hour is misleading for a person new to drawing. Your technique is great but it is often from a Pictures and with grid. Its more of a copying really...
Stunning. Can almost feel the cool, misty weather !!
Wow!! What a beautiful picture, fantastic efforts!
Beautifully instructive. Thank you!
Your drawings are mind blowing!
You make this drawing look even better than it would in real life

Thank you Alex, much appreciated,
C'est digne de respect..!!!
Excellent composition and demonstration.

Thanks Joseph, regarding the boarder that was edited out but can be seen on Patreon. I never use fixative,
I love the graphite powder technique; simply stunning. Do you have any tips for using this technique when using a reference photo or real scene?
Thanks for the comment Susan, I post all the tips and techniques in the longer video tutorials on my Patreon page, www.patreon.com/smoothie77 it would be great to see you there!
Fucking dope
Realmente precioso

Great
When your pencil erasers or tombo gets coated with graphite how do you clean them?
Smoothie, do you use the fixative spray after you finish the work? And what about while you work so that the graphite doesn't get smudged? I would like to know if your do because I notice when I work with this dry media, like pastels, pencil and graphite, even charcoal, it would stain my other paper and my hands when I am working. Wow
beautifully done
Thank you Audrey!
do you work with the graphite powder in the jar? CI have problems keeping highlighlights in the drawing. can you give any guidance?
I don't use graphite from a jar, the woodless pencils work better, here's a video I made that may help youth-cam.com/video/i8mD-0LWLBQ/w-d-xo.html

Can you use this technique using graphite powder that comes in a bottle? Thanks. Linda
yes it will work, although i find the powder from the woodless pencils works better.
So good smoothie - love your videos!

Are you Guy Garvey from Elbow ?
Real time video is much better even though it's highly edited.
Switch to Staedtler or Faber-Castell pencils. You will love them. Derwent are really ordinary pencils. Their quality is really bad.
Sorry Smoothie but you werent telling us what you were doing at the beginning, which is the crucial point. You spoke about Derwent pencils for 3 minutes...
