    As a massive fan of charcoal pencils, I bought these pencils about a year ago just to try something different. I only used them once ever since and was going to bin them soon. You have changed my mind now about these pencils. Guess the teacher appears when the student is ready. Thank you

    I love how you describe Inktense to a tee, not overstating the "ink" claims, but still speaking highly of them, as they deserve. They are intensely bright pigmented watercolor pencils. You can maybe layer more, they lift less, but they're not as staining as traditional ink.

    Im happy to hear you saying that these pencils are only a little more permanent than other watercolor pencils. I've seen many reviews of these pencils, everyone says that the inktense are permanent after dry, but no one proves it, they just repeat what the manufacturer declares, which really pisses me off because it's not true.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yeah, they are definitely not 100% permanent, that's for sure!

    • @magdamichelfeitova9446
      @magdamichelfeitova9446 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As far as I know, they are used on fabric and you can wash them. But my cloth is still unwashed, so again no concrete prove. A heard that if they are non permanent, they didn't dry properly or maybe there was too much of ink for amount of water. I am on my vacation so my set will be accessible to me in November and than I could try,
      .

      @@magdamichelfeitova9446 I've heard that if you use pencils on fabric, you need to iron the design to set it. I don’t remember the details, but you can google it.

    Fabulous artwork! A few weeks ago I watched a video by Lindsey the Frugal Crafter use inktense pencils to paint a bottle of perfume. So then I decided to get mine out and have a go. It’s great to see artists use supplies they already. One thing I realized from your video is to use the inktense pencils in light layers like watercolors. In the past a mistake I made when I used my inktense pencils and watercolor pencils is that I was coloring with them with a heavy hand, activating with water, but the color was so heavy/saturated I couldn’t blend it with other colors. A very helpful video, thank you.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      You're welcome! I'm glad you found it to be helpful! I know what you mean when it comes to being heavy-handed with watercolor pencils and the amount of pigment. I think we have all been there and that a lot of people shy away from water-soluble pencils for that very reason. Treating them more like watercolors and building up in layers definitely helps! Thank you for watching!

    Patty-I always enjoy watching individuals use the Inktense pencils. I u see e them in 3 different ways. 1) I wet the tip and apply the pigment on dry paper with a brush. 2) I will lay the color down dry, and then with a damp brush, I go over the colored area. 3) I will dampen the area and then go over that area with the pencil. Sometimes, I use them dry and add no water at all.i think the possibilities are endless

    The blue/purple/black combo is what I used when I needed a 'black' watercolor paper to use metallic watercolors on. I had ordered some but it didn't arrive at the same time as my metallic paints and I didn't want to wait! Since the inktense was permanent, I could easily paint over it without it blending into the watercolors. The piece was only about 4" x 5" - anything larger would have been too cumbersome, as far as I'm concerned.

    I love my Inktense and always love seeing tutorials and techniques how others use them. A word on your Caran D'ache board: I found it to be way expensive here in Canada, so I ordered a white nylon cutting board from Amazon that cost a fraction of what the name brand board cost. You may want to check that out and mention it to your watchers. It is textured on both sides, but cleans up perfectly and works as a beautiful palette for the Inktense. :) Thanks for the lovely video!

    I do have some Inktense, and I think they're actually water-soluble ink, not paint. That does mean it won't 'lift off' like you can do with watercolor, so I've always been a little afraid to use them! I'm glad I found your video today, I might give them another try! 😊

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      They don't lift as easily as other water-soluble pencils, but it can still be done a bit, especially if they haven't been washed out all the way. You should definitely play around with them more! They are so fun!!
      For a long time, I was also under the impression that they were actually made from ink, but then I started reading more about them on the Derwent website. Here is some information quoted directly from the Derwent website FAQ's:
      Q: "Is Derwent Inktense classed as an ink or watercolour product?"
      A: "It is classed as a watercolour product but it has different properties to a regular watercolour pencil, making it look like an ink."
      So, it's a watercolor product that looks like an ink, according to Derwent, and that's why I described it that way.

    I only love how other artists use inktense pencils 😂 I was contemplating giving them away but I might try to collect the core into a watercolor palette since that's the only way I'm most likely to use them.
    For anyone who tried, does this spoil them? If not what's the best way to get the core out? 😅

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I haven't taken the core out of the pencils and used them that way, but I do use the blocks like watercolors and have never had an issue with it. I keep my blocks in their original container and just run my brush across them like watercolor pans. I also have artist friends who break the blocks apart and put them into watercolor half pans, and use them just like watercolors and haven't had issues that I know of. I don't know if there is any difference in formulation between the blocks and pencils, but I can't imagine it would be too much of an issue. Hopefully, someone who has tried it with the pencils will be able to weigh in.

    I have enjoyed watching your video, very clear...and amazing oranges and fabric!! Thanks for sharing, I am inspired to get my inktense pencils again! I have a question, if I may ask your opinion... How should I varnish an inktense artwork? Is there a spray varnish that would protect the work? Is there a danger that varnish would ruin the drawing? Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks so much ❤

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I usually use a layer of workable fixative, and then some of the UV clear by Krylon. The UV clear helps protect things from fading. Both are sprays. I wouldn't use any sort of brush on varnish because that might disturb some of the pigment below. I do very light layers of each, so I am careful not to disturb any layers that may not be completely washed out. I have never had an issue! I hope this helps!

    Hi! I’ve had my Inktense pencils for a while, but haven’t had the opportunity to try them out/play with them as much as i’d like yet. I’ve tried to use them more lately though, & I’ve tried the technique you mentioned as “let the line do the work”, but I’ve struggled with the transition between the pencil lines going over into the white area/where I’m applying water with my brush. The transition isn’t smooth at all unfortunately😢 Do you have any idea on how to fix that? Could it be because I’m pressing too hard when laying down the Inktense?

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello, pressing too hard could be a reason. With Inktense a little really does go a long way. It may also be the kind of paper or brush you are using. A heavily textured paper could make it hard to get a mooth blend. If the bristles on your brush are too stiff, it might create streaks. The amount of water you are adding could be a factor, too. If you add too little water, you might get some streaks. If you add too much, you may not have as much control. You may need to experiment with each of these things to see what works best for you.
