The goomba dialogue change caught me off guard, didn't expect them to change it

Unless a hanging actually occurs there on screen, I don't expect any children to get traumatized by it. I don't think most children will even have any idea what it's for.

Things I know about but didn't include in the video.
1: Hooktail is exclusively referred to with female pronouns, in the original game she was referred to with masculine or none descriptive pronouns until the eventual reveal by Gloomtail that she was female and that seems to be entirely removed.
2: Speaking of Hooktail, one of their lines is slightly changed, not the one you think but still related but I just didn't want to end my video on such a note.
Update: New Japanese footage has released, the Goomba scene is changed in Japan too. It doesn't outright change the scene like this new localized script does but it does alter it a fair bit.
I' curious now what Gloomtail will say. While it's nice to just make her female reveal from the start and not shine a light on it, it does risk Gloomtail's dialogue being more boring.
The joke is completely ruined.
@@rookiewarrior6419 To be fair, the joke of "Oh you thought it was a boy but it was a girl" is really not that funny, especially now. Like I said though, hope they add something else instead so Gloomtail doesn't just say "You beat up my sister" and that's it.

@@professorpengu502 They were literally s*xually harassisng Gombella for laughs in the original, are you sure you don't know why lmfao. I'm don't agree with a lot of these dialogue changes (though a lot of them are quite unsubstantial), but that one was very much understandable.
For everyone who is wondering about the goomba dialogue, here is the original Japanese script translated to English:
"Hey, I see you got a cutie with you."
"How about playing with us cutie?"
"Yeah, you can do better than those 2 fogies."
Christinu's reply is,
"Wow, you are really forthright. I HATE that type of man. Buzz off."
The Goombas say,
"Huh. You're really stuck up. You're gonna wish you hadn't said that."
So, yeah this particular change was not made for accuracy to the original script.
They sound a little bit creepier in teh japanese tbh

Dialogue changes aside, the new Banjo like sounds from the characters, the visual overhaul, the expressions, they are just so beautifully recreated that makes it feel more like a new paper mario rather a remake
The original dialogue seems way more edgy and fun.

I really wish they just kept everything intact with the original. There's absolutely nothing "offensive" in the OG, and it still shines as a humorous, intelligent game to this day.
I agree! I miss when Nintendo had characters who said mean things. It's like in the old Animal Crossings there were neighbors who were RUTHLESS. But in the new one they're all so cuddly and sweet it makes me sick.
@@simontgamer Yeah, because being abused by creatures in virtual games - a place where some people TRY to escape from bullies and harsh enviroments in real life - is such a fun thing too, right? The original Animal Crossing is still one of my most disliked games of all time, mostly due to the horrible characters. Absolutely hated them and I can't believe people actually defend this too.. Yikes, nostalgia is one hell of a drug.
@@Maubari it all depends on what you're after when it comes to video games. I'm not looking for frictionless "safe spaces" where everything is rainbows and sparkles. But rather worlds that feel real with both lightness and darkness. To each their own.
Also In Animal Crossing the whole point is that these mean people eventually become your friends after you get to know them and get over your differences.
A more helpful way of dealing with mean people is to realize who's words you should give power to and not. Instead of burying your head in the sand, demanding to not encounter any negativity in fictional media.. Doesn't sound healthy to me anyway.
And if you honestly feel like mean comments from video game characters is "abuse" then I think therapy is what you need and not escapism.

Man I hope they kept a good chunk of the snarky dialogue from the original. I think with this remake Nintendo might be aiming for this new generation of players and so some of the dialogue like the three goombas might be seen as offensive:/ it’s funny though
Its not about appealing to a new generation I think the dialogue was just changed to be more like the japanese version

Thanks for the comparison video! It’ll be interesting to see how much dialogue has changed across the entire remake vs the original once we get our hands on it, especially given just how much has changed as shown in just the the preview footage.
While it isn’t dialogue, I’m actually really surprised they didn’t replace the noose with something else. Surprisingly, the rope of the noose is even animated, although it could’ve been like that in the original game too.
Also, I think it’s a pity they changed “ladies and germs”. That was rather amusing (and fairly unusual) in the original.
The Sewer Goombas change actually makes Gombella look less capable. They make their snarkey comments and she stands up to them and throws it right back at them. Now she just says "leave Mario alone!" like she's Chris Crocker. Way to empower women🤦

Ok I know the early 2000s was an edgy time for games...but changing dialogue that was from an older game is a problem. Especially since the dialogue is what makes the characters iconic in the original game. I get it, if I were to look at it now I wouldn't give the original game an E rating like it was before. At least an E10+ or even low T with the snarky edgy dialogue especially about the topic of emotional abuse later.
I get it, make it E rated approval to nowadays, if you make anything remotely edgy now it can get hit with the rating, but this does take away from what the original game had. Charm.
Right? I really dislike how everything has to be super duper safe nowadays, can't have even the smallest bit of edge or it'll be scrubbed clean, think of the children!! I loved pulpy stuff as a kid, I don't get why people nowadays think kid's stuff needs to be so watered down, not everything needs to be Peppa pig I promise
If you need to increase the rating then do that instead. It's mostly people that played the original or missed out on it that are most interested in playing this anyway.

I guess maybe they think the dialogue in that can be influenced badly in the newer generation. But honestly, I don't see the problem. It teaches kids about heavy topics such as death and abuse. Plus, Rogueport is full of people doing crazy things like mugging and freaking mafia stuff with Don Pianta To me, the game is a full on lesson. There are bad people and crazy shit happens in the world.
As much as I hate to say it, it's probably one of the most realistic Mario games to exist. And Mario ain't realistic at all. Heck even the stuff from the OG game is still not even that bad.

I don't think anyone has pointed this out yet, but based on 4:52, it seems like they added an extra segment to the battle theme, making it longer. this is just like what the mario RPG and superstar saga remakes did. that's so cool! it's nice that the battle theme is no longer a 30 second loop anymore; that'll make it way less repetitive.
Seems like there will be different versions of the battle theme depending on the area too, so that’s awesome

I'm happy people are getting to play this game for the first time, but i just wish they didn't take away some of the dialogue from the original. The Goombas are a example. It shows Goombells sticking up for herself, vs just sticking up for Mario. I loved that aspect of her character because it shows she won't put up with creeps. Also, its ROGUEPORT. Why wouldn't there be creeps? Plus, Koops my boy. The original had him saying what he had to say even if Mario said no. Now its just him waiting there until Mario showed up. You can very easily change the meaning of dialogue if you change some words. A lot of people may not care, but you can change someone's characterization very easily, and not always for the better.
It makes me sad they seem to have renoved all harsh and sexist comments aimed at Gombella. Like "be a good girl" and so on. It felt so real, and so satisfying to beat the dickish characters. Theyre making it feel a bit childish. Hope they dont edit it too much
Although I have to admit the new lines are funny as well.
I don't mind it but it was unnecessary, seeing how it was said by the bad guys.
You don't have to have the villains be nice to them so I find the change unnecessary.
Also , the encounter in the sewers is somehow MORE problematic than the cat-calling because now it comes off like Professor Frankly and Goombella are classist....

Personally I don't think it's a big deal and I'm not gonna whine about "nintendo being woke" or whatever, but it just seems unnecessary considering they're BAD GUYS and bad guys generally are....well, bad.

I did like the localization though...ah, well. I wonder what else might've been changed. I know so far that vivian's deal has been changed to reflect the original script more accurately.
In some regards it is made to more closely resemble the Japanese script. As far as my knowledge goes everything presented in this video is either entire new scenes exclusive to the remake in general, or "censorship". The most notable scene is the Goomba Trio's dialogue, which in the original game was more or less a direct translation of the Japanese script and is now an original interaction.

Don't think so, the original Japanese still kept the creepy goombas for example. The American staff don't care to respect the original script based on that so I have no idea what they're doing. Not to turn this into a dumb "western Vs eastern thing" just saying it how I see it lol

It feels like most of the dialogue was changed to be more... accommodating? There was nothing wrong with letting the catcalling goombas catcall and be assholes when their punishment is that we kill them anyway. Now we're beating up on the homeless and it feels wrong.
Hooktail being referred to as a female also caught my eye. In the original Gloomtail revealing she was a chick the whole time caught me off guard and was pretty funny.
There's also a dialogue change with Luigi and his bomb-omb partner. Original has him stay with Luigi for the sole purpose of never letting Luigi wear a wedding dress ever again no matter how unlikely that'd happen because the sight of it was so horrifying to him. Now it's him making sure Luigi doesn't... stumble around and trip into people whilst wearing one.
Idk man it just seems like most of the dialogue they changed ended up being stale in order to not offend anyone.
I think it says a lot about society where defending yourself against a gang of hooligans who jump you for no reason feels wrong unless they catcall you first in which case it's just desert.
I'd also think the revision to the Luigi story makes more sense since every story involves him ultimately saving the day while still making a heap of mistakes along the way and in the original version of that scene it's literally just the Bob Omb not liking Luigi being in a dress and especially now that we live in a world where Luigi wearing dresses is a widespread joke among the entire series it doesn't really stand out at all. Now there's actually something Luigi did wrong and the picture of him in said dress bumbling around in heels is a much more striking visual then, something we just have now.
I’m not sure if they are altering the lines for the sake of matching the Japanese original? I liked the old script fine. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Some aspects are to remove things added into the original translation that weren't in the Japanese script, but everything in this video does not fall into that category.
Is it just me, or has there always been a slight yellow tint at the top of Mario’s hat in the GameCube version of this game?
Weird that they went through the effort of changing these, and didn’t bother with the GBA Fire emblem toad, they could at least said that its Switch fire emblem or maybe even another game like Peach Showtime (Btw some of the ost is fine but why did they Yoshi New Islandified Frankly theme?)
How would the Toad be able to play the Switch Fire Emblem the game isn't set in modern day

@@Whispernyan Its in the game, it knows that are melodies of the past, not this world past exactly, but a past, and since it is part of the game it says that somehow we are in the future, the old music and events condensate into this badge, therefore toad has a switch and supports Edelgard

Wonder if ppl liking the banjo voices still will enjoy them after some hours of gameplay. Honestly I would mute it really fast. That's why I think they should have kept the smooth original text noise.
It's more like Undertale if anything, considering primarily only the standard Mario enemies are using actual voice clips, and even then it's only a single sample, and I don't think anyone had issues with Undertale's text noises.

So many children including myself played this game when we were like 7 years old, and problems never arose with the dialogue. I hate how nintendo babys their player base now it is so annoying and seeing it affect my favorite game of all time is very frustrating. Hopefully in the near future, modders will bring back all the original dialogue for emulators, as well as 60 fps support.

None of this is that big a deal to me, but I really don't understand the censorship of things like "airhead" "lunatic" etc. Are those words too edgy for a game with a fuckin' NOOSE in the middle of its hub area? Come on, man. I can understand the Goomba trio, I can understand some of the other stuff, but the little words is what really tips me off. At the end of the day it doesn't matter, but it just represents an odd attitude I'm hoping I see less of past the prologue.
"Airhead" might simply have been changed since it'd fit better directed at a dimwitted character, which Goombella isn't. I'd say the new version is an improvement in that regard (although "good girl" reads a little better than "good student" I think).
Dunno about "lunatic" though. Maybe it's seen as ableist but if so that is pretty ridiculous.
@@adlaistevenson2623 It was changed in Bowser's dialogue to Kammy as well, which was weird to me as well. Lunkhead isn't really a different term IMO. And they also removed "Loons" so I guess they decided it was ableist.. but that moreso just implies that anyone is referring to mentally challenged people as lunatics offensively in the first place which is pretty airheaded if I do say so myself.

I do not know Japanese and beyond the Goomba Trio scene, which I can tell you used to be a mostly direct translation of the Japanese script and is now an entirely original interaction, I don't think it would do much.

It shows that Goombella can stick up for herself while also showing the seedy nature of the town they're in.
Minor changes like are small, yes, but they set a precedent that it's okay change more small things. And a lot of small changes eventually lead to one big change.

the hooktail gender not being a secret is a damn shame, that reveal from gloomtail made me pause and go "wait...hooktail's a girl? that likes feet? the hell?" like it legit stunned me.
also the renaming of Shadow Sirens to The Three Shadows. like...why? it worked, they're all girls, pretty sure vivian counts as a siren, just saying.
honestly it just feels like they're removing this stuff to be closer to what the japanese version said, however, the script for both english and japanese was written at the same time! It's the reason the english version is full of top tier snark, and says the things it says here there and everywhere. It's a shame that the script is being altered to the degree it is.
wouldn't be surprised if mods for jailbroke switch systems came out to either fully replace the script with the original, or at least change back certain things. like hooktail's secret gender, the shadow sirens, the light sexism.

It's clear that they're renamed to the Three Shadows because they're bringing back Vivian being trans, like how it was in the Japanese version. Bedlam isn't accepting of it so doesn't refer to Vivian as a siren because Sirens are female. Idk about you, but switching Vivian to being trans like how it was supposed to be is 1000 times better than copy and pasting what was changed for the English version

The Spanish version of original game also refers to three shadows. It has always been known that many English-speaking dialogues were censored in the original, so I think it is correct that they have changed it to be as faithful as possible.

Im looking the comments and I think people dont understand the importance of the dialogues compared to the gamecube version. I hope the story still be funny despite of the watered down versions of dialogues. Rogue port is suppose to be a town full of thieves and gangs. When you talked to the NPCs you can understand the kind of struggles they are going through because of the type of conditions they are living in. Enemies also acted acording to the enviroment they are surrounded which in the case of the goombas, makes you understand the dirt of the enviroment rogue port is. Water down the dialogue is like cleaning what is suppose to be feeling dirty. That is what made special the PMttyd on gamecube. I hope those little changes doesnt affect the overall experience with the game as the game itself is a masterpiece and would be a shame for the storytelling experience felt watered down because of those dialogues changes.

When (or if) you do make a chapter two and so forth version of this, I literally ANTICIPATE that first scene with Bowser being shown. Paper Mario TTYD was my literal childhood. I always looked forward to playing the emulation we had of it. And to me, one of the most memorable scenes was Bowser yelling at Kammy Koopa. From what I can remember/details aside, Kammy mentions Petalburg to Bowser (Either about the Crystal Stars or Peach-) and somehow she mentions about how it would be a great place for a picnic. Then I'm pretty sure Bowser gets one of those answer choices, one in which he considers the picnic. After he snaps out of his picnic daydreaming, he yells "AIRHEAD!!!" at Kammy. This always amused me. Bowser is already entertaining enough, but I just really liked that line. And of course I imagined Kammy Koopa as an Airhead candy piece ontop of a broom. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that line.
But now, as shown in the trailer. They changed it to "LUNKHEAD!!!" Okay.. What does that even mean? I'm literally not familiar with that word. I know what Airhead means, as an expression. But Lunkhead? Where the heck did they find That-- It's much less amusing and entertaining in my opinion and I truly don't see why on Earth they would change the line. As far as I'm concerned, calling someone and Airhead makes much more sense than calling them a Lunkhead.
I don't know if just basically nobody feels the same way as me, or if anyone even realized. But I haven't seen anyone mention it or highlight it in any discussions. I get it's not that big of a deal to most. But this is like one of the only lines I've ever memorized from TTYD, because I enjoyed seeing/reading it.
When the full game releases I do plan on making videos for each chapter complete with the intermissions. As for Airhead, vs Lunkhead they pretty much mean the exact same thing. Idk where you were either literally everyone was talking about the change to lunkhead when the trailer came out. I don't know how you can say calling someone an airhead makes much more sense if you don't even know what lunk head means in the first place. It's actually a far more adequate word in the scene, as Airhead is typically not a serious insult and I know Bowser is a kooky guy but he was definitely trying to insult her with the word.

In this day and age, so many people get all butthurt over the most insignificant things. Stuff so unnoticeable that it wouldn't even be a problem if the very same people hadn't pointed it out otherwise. Us gamers aren't the ones making problems out of this stuff, we just want to play the game. This may sound exaggerated, but we're being robbed from playing a truly faithful remaster.

The dialogue changes aren't great but they were done for obvious reasons. What I don't understand is what was the purpose behind all the changes to the timing and composition of some cutscenes? The hooktail entrance was changed for what seems like no reason and is just not as impactful overall. Why not just keep that stuff the same?
They wanted it to be one more cinematic cutscene instead of small cutscene, pause characters talk, back into cutscene. I do prefer the original to an extent but the remake keeps the castle in shoot while the characters talk about it which is nice to set that up as the ultimate goal of the chapter since you spend so much of the chapter doing random nonsense not directly related to it.
Vid would have been even better if it compared the changed dialogue to the original Japanese GCN script.

Hopefully they don’t remove too much of the edgy humor. I mean, they kept the noose, so I doubt they are trying to make things too safe. In general though, the game looks awesome. Love the style and the lighting and camera work is very nice. Not sure how I feel about the dialogue sounds and the music yet. I wouldn’t mind an original option like in SMRPG.

Real. I don't like some of the dialogue changes, and some of the remixes of the music, but it's not too big of a deal. It's just the whiplash from it being different after playing the original so long. Being so hyped for it could also lead to disappointment. It is what it is. I still prefer the original, but this is still excellent
Unless all these changes are an attempt to make the script closer to the original Japanese (which I doubt) then why even make them? It won’t kill my enjoyment of the game but there’s 0 reason for it.

The goomba dialogue when you first enter the sewers wouldn't have been a problem if the chang ehad been the original instance. Instead, we have some gung-ho idiots itching for a fight for no reason versus thugs who cat call a girl and get you ready to trounce them for the lady's honor. It's a complete DEI-enforced downgrade on the story. And if that's what they're doing in small parts, it makes me fearful of what else they've changed.

I hear a lot of people bashing Nintendo over this, and here I am being like "Didn't Spyro Reignited do the same thing?"
Saddly, Nintendo is in a loose-loose situation here. With all the "sensitive" people of sh-"Twitter", they would conplain with the edginess, but changing it would anger purists. That and Nintendo Haters would bash it either way.
Quite a bit of "non-offensive to the everybody community" dialogue changes they made here. But not enough to ruin the spirit of the game at least, so far. Even though I wish they'd just kept everything intact and not change stuff that was never wrong to begin with.
I don't really care if they decided to make Vivian the femboy that he is in the original Japanese dialogue for the remake. I'm more concerned about the "Games Journalists" who will somehow spin this change into some sort of a political statement from Nintendo or whatever for the alphabet community or "modern audiences" after the game eventually releases.
When in reality, that's just how the character was originally meant to be even back in 2004...
I doubt Nintendo personally cares about any of this but ESRB ratings are far stricter then they used to be. I don't think Nintendo goes out of their way to keep their games E, plenty of their most notable titles are E10+ if not Teen, but keeping re-releases of games to the same rating does seem to be something they adhere to.
I've never seen such attentive minute word replacing however, I wonder if they went overboard anywhere they saw fit just so they could keep all the truly weird stuff that really should push the game over the line.

No one's going to be modding in the original dialogue either. Firstly Switch modding is pretty limited, anyone with the capabilities to do as such have better projects to be putting their mind to. Secondly, this remake doesn't just edit dialogue it completely revamps scenes, anyone would want to make a dialogue patch would be instantly dishearten by how scuffed it would have to be. Thirdly, majority of the people who actually care about the game enough to mod it, wouldn't bother, not only do they not care about minor dialogue changes, but there are plenty of dialogue changes that were edited to be more in line with the original Japanese script something those types of people are vastly more invested in.

I guarantee there’s going to be dialogue fix patches, that’s the first thing most fanbases work on. Every FE game has the same thing, including the Switch games.
Yeah the people who work on it are more invested in authenticity to the Japanese text, but a lot of changes weren’t made with that in mind either. TTYD community is insane, they’ll get the original dialogue back and make this a definitive version.

Secondly, I don't think using FE as a defense is the best thing to be doing. Those games do have shoddy translations at times but those games feature content straight up not appropriate to, really any audience and yet those people seem very keen on keeping them. I'm not usually one to judge but that part of the fandom are just straight up freaks and I sure hope similar people don't exist in this community. But even then that was done as what was put in it's place made the game just completely worse off. The translation mod does make an entirely different product at the end of the day.
That is simply not the case here, your experience is not forever tainted from sentences where one word got replaced with a slightly less effective word. And as I mentioned before, so many scenes are entirely reworked a retranslation patch would have to be so barebones it would defeat the point of the project in the first place.

I played it over at least two dozen times in my life, grabbing any and all collectible items I could find, challenge runs, several different builds, all without even using a guide for it. I lived and breathed this game for ages. So it MATTERS to me when they mess with it. I'm not gonna support messing with it for some PC pointers

Doesn't make any sense? They live in a run down sewer and here come these three well kept rich folk seemingly to them who get to live up on the surface. Ofc they're going to give them trouble, it makes perfect sense. The new dialogue is way better than someone hitting on Goombella for the fifth time.
