- We've sat on this one for a long time, but it's FINALLY time. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is regarded as not only the best Mario RPG, but also possibly the best Mario game ever. It's one I missed as a kid and with the remake coming out, I wanted to finally dip my toe in the pool. It's safe to say I will be there day one for this remake!

To be fair, I also missed this game and getting it now for the switch. When you owned a ps2,xbox and gamecube AND a gaming pc AND it was the year 2004 the best year in gaming- like, come on guys! World of warcraft, halo 2, half life 2, doom 3, far cry, metal gear solid 3, gta san andreas, rome total war etc - the year was stacked.
I had them all. Will agree, it was an awesome year 😊
2004 was 20 years ago. CRAZY
I bought this game when it released and can confirm my copy is one without the "best seller" circle on the cover.
Glad they said it was an RPG in the commercial. I never would have guessed otherwise 😊
Well a bunch of other paper mario games are known as: "Action adventure" games.
The game is called Paper Mario RPG in Japan. And the original Paper Mario is called Mario Story.
Ttyd is absolutely my favorite game of all time. I remember always replaying it up to chapter 4 as a kid because I would get stuck on figuring out the bosses name (iykyk). Eventually when I came back a little bit older I figured it out and got to experience the rest of the game. I adored every moment of this game and am so excited for the remake!!!
I have this exact same experience. I would play it until I got stuck, and then restart and play until the same point over and over again
I'm pretty sure that boss's name is not iykyk. I tried typing it in and it didn't work :(
@@SBRS47did you forget the capital I? it's case sensitive!
@@strangefishman7635 I can't try it anymore I broke both my GameCubes in frustration. I bet that was it though!
@@SBRS47try it in the remake!
You sir, are SOOOO fucking lucky. This is the first video game I ever played, and it’s remained in my top 5 for 20 years. I wish I could play it for the first time again
Buy the switch copy and you get to do it again!
I b5ought it back in the day but I barely played my GameCube and I forgot everything that I did play.....so it'll be my first time!
I was watching the Superstar Saga footage and noticed you missed like every timing based dodge or attack, so when you mentioned the timing in TTYD, I can definitely confirm it's a you problem. Big skill issue haha.
One of my favorite games growing up 🙌🏻
For anyone who hasn’t played Paper Mario TTYD, welcome to 2004!
Damn this shits 20 years old I'm a fucking dinosaur
One of the greatest years for games, music, movies. 2024 makes me realize how good we had it.
You gotta play the original Paper Mario too. That was the OG. Sadly it often gets snubbed because of TTYD's popularity
It’s a good game for sure but if you played TTYD first it will feel like a bit of a downgrade (tho I miss Mario’s lil’ twirl when playing TTYD)
It’s a great game but the reason why isn’t just TTYD popularity it’s because the sequel is so much fucking better as they expanded a lot. The OG does have some of my favorite partners and locations
@@angelespinoza3925 64 has more memorable characters and chapters.
@@angelespinoza3925 TTYD shouldn't be played without going through 64 first imo
@@Omar_E11 youre right but TTYD is still better. Again in no way am i saying P64 is bad its incredible
Timed attacks are literally the best part !
My grandma got me a GameCube when I was 5 and it came bundled with this game, it still is one of my favorite games of all time
Paper Mario TTYD is retro. Damn, I’m old.
Matty, awesome video. Lock, amazing edits.
Super excited to go through this fun game again with my son.
show your son the original, not the remake which censored and changed dialogue and forced in a transgender character
Th CiB copy’s of Thousand Year Door for GameCube became much cheaper after the switch HD remaster was announced. It used to be more expensive because the GC version was the only way to play the game (legitimately).
gamecube version is way better than the switch version
@@videostash413 I haven’t played the switch version, what are some of the differences between the two? If the GC version is still the superior version, I’m glad I have it lol
I’m calling out of work to play the remake Thursday lol
the remake is bad, stick with the original
One of the things I like about TTYD especially is that it has a lot of ways to do self-imposed challenge runs to mix things up and make the game harder. For example a popular one is to only ever upgrade BP and thus heavily limit your HP and FP for the whole game, requiring tighter guarding and more item use. And while you get to equip loads of badges, having only a handful of FP really limits how much you can use them. There's also the Hammerman and Jumpman badges which disable jumping or hammering respectively to heavily limit your moveset and make you rely on certain badges and partners a lot more.
So even tho I played this game a ton as a kid, I'm still having loads of fun playing with some of these challenges as an adult
To answer the question at 11:30, There were 3 prints of the game. The first one, the best seller version, and then one with the players choice banner. Best seller was a 2nd print.
Interesting I got the best seller. I thought I got it pretty early.
I just wanted to say I enjoyed the vid and all the SpongeBob meme edits 😂
This game is hands down the best paper Mario game and I’m happy and thrilled and excited that it’s being remade
the remake ruined it stick with the original
What I love about the original game's box and booklet is that it only shows Chapter 1and a tiny bit of Chapter 2's character. It doesn't spoil anything beyond that.
The original Paper Mario is goated but somehow they surpassed it with TTYD, hopefully they make a true sequel one day.
It's not that great
I love the original Paper Mario, I prefer it to TTYD personally
@@verysleepywolf True but Shy Guy Toy Box and Yoshis Island are top tier chapters in Paper Mario
@@cloudboysmusic5223 yeah I love those too, Shyguy's Toybox is backtracking done right and Mt Lavalava is just an amazing chapter all around. My favorite is Tubba Blubba's chapter, two dungeons and a boss with a twist, absolutely goated
Nice review, I didn’t play it until my college years but it became one of my favorite GameCube games once I did and I’m happy that they are remaking it on switch
the switch version is awful, love the original
Omega W game,Hope you had an excellent experience with this masterpiece
I usually go back and forth between this and Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga for the best RPG Mario game
Played Paper Mario TYD back when I had a wii. Brilliant, in design, story, and unique divergent in the franchise. Wish we got more games like these. The sides rollers are good, but the RPGs' are peak.
Favorite videogame since i played it all those years ago. Cannot wait to play this.
You should play Paper Mario 64. Another amazing classic.
No sir you are retro rebound!

Me dodging most of the stage hazards : " ok boomer "😂
What crazy timing
How come you played this one so close to the release of the remaster?
The non bestseller edition definitely exists. I have one I bought the day it came out.
I just looked and my copy doesn’t have the “best seller” sticker
Ohhh cool! Mine does, came from GameStop 🤣 wayyyy back in the day 😂 $20 when I got it. 💜
To each their own, but I liked the timing aspect of the fights. It made the game a little more challenging and involved a bit more skill that just picking an attack in the menu and letting the game do all of the work. And the reason I think they start it off slow is because as you unlock new abilities and get new characters there are different things you have to time so it helps the player get better at the game. But yeah, amazing game and I can't wait for the remake.
In these kinds of games, timing is only tricky at first until you have it on lock
The Australian version of paper Mario ttyd for the GameCube is g 8+ and has original Nintendo seal of quality where it said best seller
I loved TTYD and I wish the Paper Mario series of games would go back to something like that.
The Best Seller seal is like the Greatest Hits red label on PS2 games. The original release of TTYD did not have the seal.
They also had player's choice with yellow labels...what's really the difference.
did you get any nasty strikes from Nintendo yet? It's been almost a minute.
They don't do that anymore
Hey be nice to retro rebound
It gives me Max0r Vibes: "Speaking of which, it has been at least 30 seconds since a homeless guy yelled at me. Let's fix that, without going to Los Angeles."
TTYD is my third favorite game all time only behind New Vegas and BG3. Great game and the best Mario game there is very excited to play it and 100% it again.
Peak paper mario. Lol
Just picked up the remake! I’ve Been playing the Super Mario RPG, and it’s much more my type of Mario game
I still have it on cube and getting switch version tomorrow. Cant wait
I’m looking forward to this game.
Best part about this video is all the love and appreciation for best boy Koops.
Loved the Video.
Can’t wait to get the remake
With the remake, finally the GameCube copy is cheaper online.
That's what I'm going to get, although I think it might go back up in value.
I still love super Mario RPG legend of the seven stars
I'm so mad at myself. As a kid I cut out tons of characters from a bunch of ps2 and gamecube game manuals to make a cool collage. This game's manual was one of those victims. ;-;
Awesome game! Playing this game is such a treat! Looking forward to playing the NX version!
The falling background generally you can see wobbling before it's even queue to fall over, but yeah it is annoying regardless, at least early on when 1 HP on both your party is actually a lot. Don't get me started on the random stage status effect though, I was having a tight first attempt on final boss a few days ago and I got frozen and got clapped 🫠 thankfully I got it second try, would've been a nightmare having to sit through all that dialogue and cutscenes again
We need a Paper Resident Evil RPG as well! :3
This is my favorite Paper Mario game
2:20 I mostly played NASCAR 2005 on my GameCube back then...I think I was an even weirder GameCube owner.
Watching before Nintendo takes action
Anyone here played bug fables?
Hugely inspired by paper mario games, and it has great reviews
But, I got sick of it about 2/3 of the way through. And if matty thinks the paper mario blocking can be annoying, he should not play bug fables
One of the best Mario games with the best manual
That video thumbnail art is unsettling to look at, what were you thinking?😐
You just need a little bit of practice for the timing of moves. There is an extremely helpful badge called timing tutor that actually tells you when to press A. There is 0 luck involved, only skill.
This also goes for the roulette. If you press A on the symbol BEFORE the on that you want to roll, you will always get what you want. Again, takes some practice and good timing, but it isn’t luck based at all either.
You can also defend from items being thrown from the audience or the stage it’s falling by pressing A just before it hits you. You can also press X to whack audience members ears who are going to throw something bad at you.
I gotta say, a lot of the criticisms you made are not fair as they’re due to your lack of knowledge and lack of skill (the timing in this game is so generous, even in my mid 30s I’m getting them all so…)
Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story is also a banger
You have to play Bowser’s Inside Story
Shout out to the strategy guide for having a Blazing Saddles reference.
The original's pretty good. Though the 2nd or 3rd chapter (w the mini robots) was kinda frustrating.
My favorite game of all time
Hey Matty, got an idea for a retro rebound game for you, since you like Obsidian so much and this is a game most people don't have access to anymore, how about "Alpha Protocol?"
Bro got the summer tan going.
Retro rebound got that summer tan*
Love doing BP only runs
Mother/Earthbound vibes
Yo !! This Game Is A Retro Classic Game Cube
I think I’m stepping away from Matty. Just can’t take him anymore. Respectfully said.
Look he's not playing Xbox how refreshing
11:39 I went to go look at my complete in box copy and sure enough has that big best seller on it. So idk. Maybe some did, some didn’t. Mine is the same as yours though 😅 💜
Its been 20 years since I played this game and the first thing that stood out to me was just how dated this game is. There is so much padding and retracing to do regular stuff, the warp pipes help out a lot but there are so many segments in the story you are having to back track for no reason just to pad the length out. The level designs are awful, very hallway esque. Compare that to the Original Paper Mario dry dry desert which is huge. I found myself struggling to finish the game at the last stretches. The difficulty is non existent. I pretty much just spammed Battle Points each level up.
9:28 Sure you can say it's cheap I guess, but that's consistent for Nintendo games. Mario Kart has blue shells. Mario Party is full of random bullshit. Smash bros has assist trophies and hammers. These things all help you to not take the game too seriously, as that's just how Nintendo views game design.
Yeah...with no manual in the Switch version, gotta say, the GameCube version is *the* upgrade.
That’s the deciding factor? Lmao
@@yagamigoesberserk Also the GameCube original runs at native 60fps so any time hit could be time accurately and precise whereas the Switch remake is 30fps so it'll get a bit of getting use to to time those.
@@VOAN And it isn't censored or altered by activists.
@@VulpasDawg, just get over those damn Goombas. And if you’re talking about Vibian, that was always in the original japanese version, they just censored her identity in America
@@geschnitztekiste4111 Nah, I'm not getting over censorship. Of it was important enough to change, it's important enough to complain. As for Vivian, that's false, Vivian is otokonoko.
day before the remake huh?
Why are you just now playing it is the real question.
Ive never played it either
You should play fire emblem bro
Nintendo: don't play that shit bro, get the new Digital version. Pay us, we need money.
The sound effects on each transition between you and the game were a little much in this one. Nice review though.
Sadly the switch version runs at 30fps, so Gamecube once again has the best version of a game released on switch :p
Switch version has unnecessary changes too.
@@PaperBanjo64Just move on from those sewer Goombas lol, and if you’re referring to Vivian, it’s actually more faithful to the Japanese version now.
simple? wrong.
In the 20 years the remake runs worst and loads a bit slower at times. The og ran at 60fps the remake runs at 30fps it feels off when you play.
In terms of the timing window stuff, you will probably prefer the remake at 30 fps since the timing window is wider. Going from the 30 fps of Paper Mario 64 to the 60 fps of TTYD definitely took some getting used to back in the day.
remake its paper mario and the thousand censorship
2nd Best Paper Mario Game !!
What’s the first? I only played the Wii one. It was great.
Nah not second, just the best
@@Nobody-w8n4s Super Paper Mario, that's the one on the Wii. That one is definitely the best !!
@@awesomeboss2020 it was really cool.
@@awesomeboss2020Also a great game for sure, but imo Paper Mario 64 is the best.
There were some dialogue updates in the remake I could have done without, but from what I have played so far it’s still pretty great like the original one.
Wait so you grew up with an og Xbox, a PS2 and a Gamecube? Lucky mfer
I think he's just bad at the game lol
I loved the first Paper Mario to death but i never played this one, i'm looking forward to the remaster
This was my first Mario RPG and I loved it. Especially Vivian, her situation is more clear in the remake so I'm really looking forward to that.
She's still a female to me! 😁
More clear? It's equally unclear, just in the opposite direction to appease TRAs (ywnbaw btw), Vivian is referred to canonically as otokonoko (feminine boy; a less literal translation would be trap or femboy).
I got this on my steam deck, I’ve been waiting to see what upgrades the switch version will have. To see whether or not it’s worth it.
Those dodges are easy dude lmao. You are getting old😊
If we have the game emulated on steam deck/pc then shouldn’t people just play that game? By the looks of things the remake doesn’t really add all that much to justify buying a brand new copy
And it's censored in parts and less faithful to the original Japanese.
One reason to buy it is to incentivize Nintendo to make more Paper Mario games in the original style instead of the Sticker Star style that they've been doing for over 10 years.
this was the last good paper mario before they went down hill
Still don't know why they didn't keep them this style.
The Switch version is going to be a collectors item. A good amount of retailers cancelled preorders. I hope BestBuy has my copy come Thursday. It's going to be a great 3 day weekend.
Do in store pickup!
Mine wasn't canceled
you should have waited your first time for the remake
