    Gotta say...I LOVE seeing how clean your site is! We had a house built in 2021 and the sheer amount of GARBAGE left lying around was insane. Half full soda cans that were left to drywall over...soda cans left inside the cavity for the gas fireplace. An entire box of roofing nails was dropped in the front yard and they just put sod over them. You guys certainly do a high quality, detail oriented job!!

    I can't say if caulking the top of the window frame is necessary or not, but from a purely time and materials standpoint, you're not losing a measurable amount of money doing it so it surely wouldn't hurt.

    Beautiful job on the corner of the roof. Also, you stated is the bead of caulking above the newly installed windows is necessary? I say DEFINITELY YES, 1st as a business owner; your name is attached to the quality of work you provide to the customer. 2nd, I rather over kill any detailed installation, especially when it’s dealing with rain!
    Stay safe and continue putting out quality for the DIY’s on TH-cam.

    It's getting to look a lot like a warehouse vs. "cabin". It's a large cabin. One thing I've noticed over the years of buildings and their fireplaces/chimney's is the placement of windows near them. From the outside, these 6 windows look nice however, for the inside, it creates too much glare when taking in the fireplace decore and style, if it will have some. During daytime, those windows will allow too much light around the stone work inside, if it will have some, which prevents a clear observation of the overall fireplace/chimney build. Hope they have a raised hearth too.
    BTW, re the levels, you did tell Greg to bring the 4 footer and also the 6 footer at the same time.

    • @johnkmcgregor5209
      @johnkmcgregor5209 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Garth Clark you are right re the look. It’s like a posh outlet store/factory not a hunting cabin. Not RRs fault but the architect, I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.

    I would recommend sloping the bottom window sills, it's code. That way the if the window leaks the water runs out and not into your insulation. Also, flex tape works great for the corners.

    Sorry you said "maybe" to Greg on the six foot level. I don't think you are overdoing at all with your tape. Matter of fact I personally feel you are perhaps under doing. I very much like to do a full shingle wrap on the frame, install the window with caulk and then do the final wrap with tape over the nailing flanges. I live in wind and rain with very little yearly drying time so I am paranoid with penetrations. Hence also my preference for screws (the new really flat pancake ss ones are ideal) because as you stated, "no product lasts forever". When it comes time to replace screws are so much easier and neater. I haven't yet used them on the window trims but it wouldn't be a bad idea to ease the removal of J channel etc.

    I love your videos, not a huge fan of relying on caulk unless it's totally necessarry and I think the flashing details should have been kicked off with a peel and stick flexible membrane around the housewrap and plywood joint on flat where the vertical wall and roof ply meet, than putting flashing as you have. Looks great and I bet it will last a long time, I just think it is a bit of a weakpoint that joint there and that spot will see a lot of rain. I'm sure it's fine but I am just thinking there's a better way to do this to sleep well at night about it.
