In this video we show how to install counter flashing for a chimney detail on a shingle roof.
I have seen many different ways of bending and installing this flashing. There are many methods that do not work! This is why a chimney can be a highly potential leak area. Our method brings all water past the chimney and step flashings which in our opinion is the best method for water management.

I usually flash my chimneys with galvanized sheet metal and solder the seams, but I've flashed many chimneys with coil stock as well in my roofing career, I've worked at big roofing companies where guys would swear you can't flash a chimney with coil stock, and make it water tight😑
If i flash a chimney, and I put my name on it, and i warranty my work, ( i warranty my work for 3 years, the materials speak for themselves) but if i flash a chimney and say it's done and not going to leak, then you can bet your bottom dollar, it's done and it's not gonna leak..
You got some nice crisp clean bends on that front apron, i watched a video of a guy doing this yesterday and man i swear he didn't hem the front apron and it looked like he cut his metal with a straight razor and a hammer 😂😂😂

Looks great. I would like to see how the Siding is detailed at the corner. If this was cap flashing on a brick chimney I get it.
This is what we were asked to do. Not sure how it was going to be finished.
Watching the off colored nail go in the peak hurt my soul. Some good concepts that I never thought of tho.

What was the point of counterflashing the step on this application other than someone's personal asthetic preference?
It serves no practical purpose whatsoever since the step would have been countered by the material used to side the chimney anyway.

That triangle tab you tucked creates a leak no? Water that runs down the backside of that runs behind the flashing since you tucked it “behind” the step flashing..
Thanks for the question. The step flashing is considered the "dump" flashing and should let water out either onto a shingle or in this case the front pan "apron" flashing. When we tuck the bottom and side behind the step flashing we ensure any water that may enter has no obstruction on the way out. Others may do it differently but this is our method.
Great Job, however the long piece going up the chimney side you put the triangle bend behind the step flashing when you slid it up....couldn't rain water run down that bent triangle and then now it's behind the step flashing?
Either way is ok. That is the one "pin hole" that needs caulking. I put it behind so it hides the shiny step flashing from the ground. Good question.
Its not like the rains gonna go down the metal & then back up it lol, itll drip off the end of the triangle not follow it back up behind the flashing like you were thinking...

Don't ever flash side wall like this water gets trapped under the metal never dries out rotting the shingles out plus makes it a nightmare for the next roofer who reroofs it, double hem bottom with a kick is the best way, also if siding is going on the chimney side wall doesn't even need the metal over flashing cards

That's the problem I have on the regular. That side wall flashing isn't necessary, and the next roofer is cutting it at the bend so he can get the shingles and nails out. 😢😢😢

We bend these flashings ourselves. The coils of aluminum are 24” x 100’.
So does that caulk last the 30 year life of the roof or does the sun dry it out crack and shrink it
Depending on sun exposure. This caulking can last the life of the roof. It’s good shit.

What is that sheet metal bending tool you have there? What's that called?
Some call them hand seamers or just metal benders. The brand we can get here is prime grip. They have a lot on their website.

I got these from our metal supplier. I believe they are a Malco product. They are setup the same as red snips.
They are made to cut stainless

Why the hell would you caulk the flashing at the overlap at the bottom? Youre now closing off any chance of air getting in there and a sideways driving rain will now get stuck between fhat and the step flash.
Also of any safety officer in your area sees this, theyll hand you a ticket for improper tying off. That roof bracket is to be nailed down using the certified nails or certified screws on both sides of the ridge with every hole fastened that runs down a rafter.
You can try saying you were safe, but those washers on fhose weather tights arent going to cut it
