As a video gains traction I like to redo the pinned comment. This time I wanna reflect on one of my biggest regrets with this video: I probably should have at least mentioned the Rainbow Edition bootleg.
There's a lot about the history of Street Fighter that I left out of this video, because the premise of this video literally was just "what's the difference between all these revisions?". However, reading all the lovely comments you've all left (thank you btw!), it's clear a lot of you would have liked if I did delve into that history more and made it more of a full-on retrospective than just a surface-level revision comparison. Some of you did also appreciate the brisk pace and concise explanations too though, so don't worry, I see you!
So the reason it didn't come up in the video was because as far as revision history and console ports go, Champion Edition and Turbo/HF kinda just blur together. The two most instrumental home ports, Super NES and Sega Genesis, combined both versions into one game. So I mashed them together into a single section in my script as well, and a lot of the nuance kinda just fell out. (Well, that and I forgot it existed. Oopsie!)
But, even though Rainbow Edition isn't an official Capcom product, it and other "turbo bootlegs" were in effect the reason Hyper Fighting was made in the first place - to compete with the bootleggers and meet the demand from players for more Street Fighter II. That's actually a pretty integral part of Street Fighter history and why they busted out two arcade revisions in the same year. They were just keeping up with demand at the time.
I also hadn't realised just how prevalent Rainbow Edition was in arcades, to the extent that many of you didn't even know it was a bootleg and not official. It was actually especially prevalent in my own home country of Australia, where importing amusement machines was expensive and arcade operators hardly gave a crap what they were running as long as it was something new and fresh.
(See also: all those weird Daytona USA bootlegs, many of which were made right here in Australia due to how long the game stuck around in arcades - hell it's still around. I've definitely seen a lot of modified Daytona USA machines growing up, like the one that turns the cars into "monster trucks", but I just thought the machine was broken lol - hardware failure was definitely a common thing too.)

Also idk if it was clear or not but i actually did rush this video out quite a bit towards the end, hence the haphazard voiceover quality, dodgy writing/pacing and all the mistakes I didn't end up fixing. I'd like think I've improved since then though!
I have been on a long term hiatus due to life and health getting in the way, but I am okay! I'm reading all your comments, and I haven't stopped working on _scripts_ for videos at least! I hope to be able to get on top of things again soon and deliver you some fun reviews and documentaries again. 🐑💕✨

Which creates a funny scenario where you can hop on sfv and play a sfII guile and get away with it in beginner leagues surprisingly well. 2 specials and a cr.mk have really taken that man places.

The biggest difference between the snes and the genesis version gameplaywise is that the genesis version allows the so called cps1 chains which are true to the arcade. Sadly it wont work on the snes as far as i could find out.
Cps1 chains basically allows you to chain certain normals into each other which wouldnt normally be possible. For instance you could go for cr short into st Fierce by by pressing short and firece simultaneously.
Those were generally removed in new challangers onwards (except anniversary edition, since it had edition select)

  • @mrmacross

The SNES version of SFII is probably more playable today than the original arcade version simply because it was developed around the same time as Champion Edition and as such has the capacity for mirror matches with the CE color palettes. Really great game for its time when you take into account everything.
SSFIIX for Matching Service on Dreamcast also has the neat feature of being able to select Shin Akuma, with double air fireballs and Raging Demon super.

23:51 I can't believe I forgot to thank you. Past June the 30th Anniversary Collection was on sale at Steam and I was unsure about to buy it or not because a lot of reviews complained about many things, almost put it into my "Ignore" list (despite the fact that I'm an SFII fan since 1992) because I had a bitter experience with another two emulated games on Steam that same month (one was Metal Slug), so I was looking for videos about the Collection to decide when your video was recommended to me just in time before the sale ended, and now I'm very happy playing with an arcade stick and enjoying all the museum content. Digital Eclipse did and excellent job indeed.
It's sad that not all the games into the collection have online, but for that exist Fightcade 2 ;)
I loved every second of your amazing vid (your joke about "The best way to experience SF2 legacy today is... another SF2 game"? is my favorite).
Since then I'm subscribed and looking for more of your vids in the future.

    • @rexthesheep
      @rexthesheep  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The reviews likely talk about certain missing features, limited online play or poor netcode, or input latency. It's all stuff better handled by community efforts like Fightcade, but I still think SF30 is still a great experience for a more "mass market" audience, and IMO the extensive museum content in these Digital Eclipse collections is worth the price of admission alone.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! And thank you for subscribing. I've had health issues, a sick family member and other life stuff I've had to focus my attention on this year, but I'm not gone for good and I intend to return to TH-cam eventually.

Now, I mentioned this around the time that Ultra had gotten released, but I have to repeat myself when I state that it is only a matter of time before we get a true Definitive Edition of this title in the form of Ultimate Street Fighter II: The True Challenge, combining virtually every element from every major version (including the console version of Hyper's additions, as well as Akuma's backstory from when he fights Shin Akuma in Super Turbo (Japan) and ST Revival, HD Remix's extra balances, Ultra's Way of the Hado ported without Motion Controls, every soundtrack from every console port (though outside of Modding, this may be a Pipe Dream from an official release), and the official debut of Sheng Long as a playable character): At this point in time, the concept of an Ultimate Street Fighter II is not so farfetched, this is exactly what Capcom needs to do in order to finally deliver the complete experience of this title once and for all in a way that Hyper (Arcade) and Ultra couldn't; whether or not this would make for the Final Version of Street Fighter II to ever see a release is obviously well up in the air, but when the term Ultimate is used to identify a product, you expect there to be a true sense of closure once it is completed, I wouldn't be surprised if the company is a bit hesitant on what such an update to its longest running standalone title would look like but I firmly believe without question nor contest that it will be able to find a way to have everything put all in one place to establish a true end to this part of the franchise, it is north of Thirty Years in the making and wishfully we will get something about this before its Golden Anniversary is celebrated in 204I.

Liked the video. SF2 was what got me into fighting games. And until now, SF is my main fighting game, or the fighting game where I am best at. I just want to add something about Violent Ken. When Violent Ken debuted in SVC: Chaos, he wasn't just inspired/copied from Brainwashed Ken in the SF2 Animated Movie. Ken in SVC: Chaos wasn't brainwashed, nor made by Shadaloo. Ken was given Orochi blood by Goenitz (Pronounced as Gaynitz), Leader of the Hakkeshu clan, one of Orochi's Four Heavenly Kings. That's why Ken got purple flames (in the KOF world, purple flames symbolizes Orochi) and that Orochi Skull symbol in his Exceed move. (another symbol for Orochi.)
Not sure if Capcom rewrote that for USF2's story, but they did keep his teleport move and purple flames though. 🙂 Anyway, keep up the good work.

It is true you could buy an upgraded controller for the Gen, but between a new controller or a new game, most would opt for a new game and the standard controller for the Gen was simply not Ideal for that or some other games. Granted the standard SNES controller was not the best way to play either if looking for arcade perfect button placement, but good enough.

Back in the day I had to go through this when I saw some old videos of Daigo playing on Super Turbo and not understanding what version of Street Fighter II it was. Fun Fact. One of the founders of Evo (biggest fighting game tournament) was very unsatisfied with the netcode of Hyper Fighting on XBL. As a result, he started to develop his own netcode that he called GGPO. This type of netcode is the one that we would come to know as rollback netcode. I main'd T Hawk even in SFIV back in the day, which a lot of other players seemed to find an odd choice. Apparently he is considered low tier.

Street Fighter 2 for the Super NES actually does have mirror match ability with the champion edition colors. You just needed to enter a special code at the “capcom” screen and if done correctly you will hear a chime and you will then be able to play mirror matches.

Also, please be respectful about any mistakes that have corrections or at least disclaimers in the video. Those mistakes were noticed in the final days of production, and I had to get the video done and move on, so I didn't have time to rerecord new lines.
In particular regarding the O.Characters thing, there's literally a message onscreen in the video saying I got it completely wrong, and obviously I know this since I recorded footage of myself doing it correctly. It requires inputting different codes for each character, and there was just no way I could have elaborated on that without overextending myself. Reminder, I am just one person, and this isn't a full-time job for me.

I'm sure many people pointed this out but I didn't immedialy see them so I'll remind everyone of this fun fact. Hyper fighting/Turbo was made in response to a bootleg street fighter 2 hack known as Street fighter 2 rainbow. It was a hilariously unbalanced SF2 on steroids but a capcom dev could not deny how much more fun this illegal version was and convinced the rest of capcom to get working on an official new version with faster speed and other changes inspired by rainbow.

the 3DO version of Super Turbo was so good, that even among the competitive Super Turbo community, even in the past few years, Many still believe, Other than the game missing the Old version of the characters, it was arcade perfect. (which as you mentioned it's definitely not). It's still a *very* notable since it has a redone soundtrack made specifically for it, which many argue is the best sounding version -- and they never used that version of the soundtrack in any other port.

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The problem is not the game itself but the controller. The 3DO controller only had 5 buttons, 3 on the face and two shoulder buttons, trying to find a good 6 proper buttons controller for it was difficult and the official one they had for it had the Pause button on the face which is annoying.

Totally makes sense to me now regarding why Ultra Street Fighter 2 seems easier to play. The input delay times tolerances must have been widened just a touch to make the special moves easier to pull off. When I play the older versions on both Switch with a pro controller, or on Steam with a Hori Fight Pad, the moves have tighter input delay requirements.

My main concern is getting the maximum amount of content. This was a great and really helpful video, but I think I’m still confused on if certain features are included in certain versions. Like, does Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers include the option to view intros and endings from across the SFII series like the Anniversary Edition does?
Let’s say I want EVERYTHING. Every version of every character, every palate swap, every graphics and sound options, every stage and bonus stage, all of it. What would be the minimum number of games I would need to get in the SFII series to collected ALL the content?

      @@rexthesheep you are welcome.
I recommend looking up the Manga. At very least, for the covers alone. A lot of the most iconic Street Fighter art comes from there.
      Notable covers:
Zangief flexing so hard blood squirts out of his head. This has been referenced a lot. One of his poses in Puzzle Fighter/Gem Fighter is this pose.
Awesome Vega cover after a fight where his claws are broken. Nothing really special lore-wise, I just like it.
Sagat holding a defeated opponent by the head (either dead or unconscious). Looks like Ryo from Art of Fight with Roberto's head. Orange Gi. This is the first seed of what became Dan Hibiki. This exact pose shows up in certain intro poses in the Alpha series and CvS series. Either against Ryu or Dan depending on the game. This is Go Hibiki, Dan's father.

It’s genuinely amazing how good the online play is compared to the 30th anniversary edition and it doesn’t just have sf. U can play the og mk games, kof, and so much more.
