Watch as Janis performs one of her most beautiful ballads from her Grammy winning masterpiece "Between the Lines". My favorite song from that album. - Kathleen Brogan
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams
I was a teenage boy when her song at 17 came out, and I could not believe that every song on that album was beyond great. her song writing is far above bob Dylan. and all my guy friends were listening to led zeplin, black sabath, and so on. and they would laugh at me ffor listening to her music. but the song that she wrote were not from this world.
I totally agree with you 100%! I too was made fun of for listening to Janis. I still love her to this day. I think you and I would get along all these years later. Write me at writingreader@gmail.com Thanks! Dave
I was one of them guys with led zep black sabbath and all that but I have always had between the lines first the lp it's now a cd hidden under my bed and when I am on my own I listen and always have a?good cry thank you jan is
All her songs are hauntingly beautiful and yet heart-wrenching. I love the double-entendre of “morning” and “mourning.” “It’s a long, long time ‘til mourning lays wasted on the dawn.” Wow!
At University in 1975 I was woken in the night by someone in the next room playing this song at full volume. I've been haunted by it ever since. A welcome haunting! And what a spine-tingling performance this is.
Just beautiful.. also as it’s now a cold January ..she has a gorgeous about 2 min song “In the winter “ which is a gem .. Thank you Janis for such thoughtful lyrics and your gorgeous singing ..❤
I have this very album on vinyl to this very day tea and sympathy is my favorite I dedicated it to the love of my life when he passed. it still brings me to tears.its beautiful. and puts me in mind of him.forever my dear autry.love jodi
I don't want to ride the milk train any more I'll go to bed at nine, and waken with the dawn And lunch at half past noon Dinner prompt at five The comfort of a few old friends long past their prime Pass the tea & sympathy For the good old days long gone Let's drink a toast to those who most Believe in what they've won It's a long long time 'til morning Plays wasted on the dawn I'll not write another line, For my true love is gone And when the guests have done I'll tidy up the room I'll turn the covers down And gazing at the moon Will pray to go quite mad And live in long ago When you and I were one, so very long ago Pass the tea & sympathy For the good old days long gone Let's drink a toast to those who most Believe in what they've won It's a long long time 'til morning Plays wasted on the dawn I'll not write another line, For my true love is gone And when I have no dreams To give you any more, I'll light a blazing fire And wait within the door, And throw my life away "I wonder why?" they all will say And now I lay me down to sleep, Forever and a day Pass the tea & sympathy For the good old days are dead Let's drink a toast to those who best Survived the life they've led It's a long long time 'til morning, So build your fires high Now I lay me down to sleep, Forever by your side
I'm Russian and never knew anything about this song/singer. But I'm in tears now! The storytelling is just so strong. The picture of the old woman sitting without a purpose or love in her life... man... I cry. I even went and found what those 'milk trains' were in 30-60s' England. I cried of the nostalgia about the thing I've never seen.
Kathleen Brogan Yes I most definately will. Though I understand that's the saddest song in her repertoire, and I'm a sucker just for the saddest songs in the world. Very glad to add this biggest gem in my collection. ^_^
I wouldn't say this is the saddest, for me 'In the winter' wins that accolade, closely followed by 'Jesse' and 'At Seventeen' - although I am sure you have found that out for yourself by now.
30 years easily since listening to Between the Lines - my god, remembered every word and every emotion from all those years ago. So beautiful and real both in the syrup of the memories but the beauty of the time she takes me back to. She really was the voice that told me, in all that teenage angst, that I was not alone. I am admonishing myself now for letting it go.
I always love to see these biscuits from the time period. They bring back so many memories of a decade that gave us so much in the way of varied and beautiful, memorable sounds.
Beautiful song Janis Ian thank you my mom passed and I am dedicating this beautiful words for her, I saw you live singing and playing at the Town's Crier thank you Sylvia Zuniga
Janis is such an authentic wordsmith and damn fine guitar player. Thanks Nancy S. for bringing this album over to my first apartment in C.S. Colorado. Her music always reminds me of the cold Victorian house you lived in downtown and they feeling of winter in Colorado.
I saw this particular show (with the Hebrew subs) and recorded it on an audio cassette which I heard again and again when I was hospitalized. It acompained me for a long time. Seeing it brings many old memories
I met Janis on October 6, 1997, at Juanita's in Little Rock. I was surprised how short she is; if she's five feet tall, she's no more. I managed to get her to autograph my copy of Between the Lines.
How does an artist, with such intelligence, awareness, and yes, sympathy, survive in this hard, cold world ? such an ironic gift and curse, to be so talented, an so observantly present.
And now to see this beautiful lady who once, "At 17," thought she was an ugly duckling, never got a valentine. Pretty lady, thank you so much for your beauty and warm feeling you pass along from your heart
Absolutely perfect, a beautiful ballad done seemingly effortlessly, simply a vocal and guitar yet fills the hall and takes the audience, like me, to a place Janis wanted, what a magical artist!
The subtitles are in Hebrew - probably this was aired on the Israeli TV. Thank you so much. Janis amazes me with her huge heart and talent, and of course, her magical voice - every time.
I wonder why her songs aren't on Sirius "The Bridge" which is a songwriters channel like James Taylor, etc. I guess because a lot of her songs are sad. But she should be on there. My wife knew of her, I just remember her songs but not the name of the singer. Masterful singer.

You must be young and don't know what the years do...@BlueBeeThemeMusic
yes sir ☝️❤️🙏
Janis Ian, James Taylor, Carol King, Neal Diamond, Jim Croce, and Harry Chapin all wrote such deep, rich songs that told wonderful stories.
PLZ INCLUDE LAURA NYRO, SADE, AMY WINEHOUSE, DONNA SUMMER, TAYLOR DANE, & MORE(GETTING TOO OLD TO REMEMBER ALL)
Dont forget Fiona Apple and Joni Mitchell
@@katayfa Mitchell, Nyro and Ian were all influenced by Baez, Judy Collins and Buffy Sainte-Marie

Plus...y'know Janis can SING. Not so much Dylan, but that's just my tiny opinion. As songwriters both are phenomenal, but just...he cannot sing. SMH

You were smart, your friends were stupid.
I faced to the same as there's a popular misconception that all black people should listen to R&B and Rap. I like good music from all genres.
"I'll not write another line...for my true love is gone"....so haunting.
All her songs are hauntingly beautiful and yet heart-wrenching. I love the double-entendre of “morning” and “mourning.” “It’s a long, long time ‘til mourning lays wasted on the dawn.” Wow!
I haven't heard this song for about 30 years or more. And now I'm in tears. So beautiful. So sad. Such a story teller.
The sensitivity of Janis' lyrics are truly unique. Thanks for posting this masterpiece.
When a voice, a mic, and a guitar are all you need to move an audience.
Incredible how effortless she makes it look, whenever she sings she just stares off, seemingly deep in thought
At University in 1975 I was woken in the night by someone in the next room playing this song at full volume. I've been haunted by it ever since. A welcome haunting! And what a spine-tingling performance this is.
Glad you enjoyed this clip.
None like her !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! absolutely the best female vocalist/poet to ever appear !!!
I'll say it over & over.

A true Mistress of Music, a poetess and storyteller.
I don't want to ride the milk train any more
I'll go to bed at nine, and waken with the dawn
And lunch at half past noon
Dinner prompt at five
The comfort of a few old friends long past their prime
Pass the tea & sympathy
For the good old days long gone
Let's drink a toast to those who most
Believe in what they've won
It's a long long time 'til morning
Plays wasted on the dawn
I'll not write another line,
For my true love is gone
And when the guests have done
I'll tidy up the room
I'll turn the covers down
And gazing at the moon
Will pray to go quite mad
And live in long ago
When you and I were one, so very long ago
Pass the tea & sympathy
For the good old days long gone
Let's drink a toast to those who most
Believe in what they've won
It's a long long time 'til morning
Plays wasted on the dawn
I'll not write another line,
For my true love is gone
And when I have no dreams
To give you any more,
I'll light a blazing fire
And wait within the door,
And throw my life away
"I wonder why?" they all will say
And now I lay me down to sleep,
Forever and a day
Pass the tea & sympathy
For the good old days are dead
Let's drink a toast to those who best
Survived the life they've led
It's a long long time 'til morning,
So build your fires high
Now I lay me down to sleep,
Forever by your side
Absolutely brilliant, what a lady. Had the pleasure of joining her concert in 2015 in Netherlands, and she was still going strong!!
By far my favourite Janis Ian song!!
I first heard this album 40 years ago, it's still as fresh now as it was then!

@@markmartin448 ..The song "Watercolors" is pretty devastating also.
@@dannygriffith6185 and not to mention - 'In The Winter' - Ian is pretty amazing at pulling on the heart strings.

It gives me chills. I love her music

Amazing how the words just seem to fall out of her mouth. Simply genius lyrics and songwriting.

So sorry lots of love and respect ♥️
Wonderful...
She reminds me of Gordon Lightfoot only female. I grew up listening to her, what a beautiful voice and story telling skill.
Beautiful song, very lovely lady. This song had me in tears.
Thanks for posting. I've listened to this song many times, but it's great to see her singing it live for the first time.

Great choice and share -- and her winning smile balances the deep poignancy.

Nearly all of Janis's songs strike a chord so deeply in me ... some bring me almost to the point of tears! She is simply 100% wow!
I have always loved you!

@phatcracker2007 Yes, the last verse is. A lot of Janis Ian's early music is incredibly sad. She's cheered up with time.
If you can listen to this without a slight tear perhaps you are deaf.

Wish she had a duet with john denver...
That's the slow down in ireland
yup, sinking fast.
Had a girlfriend when i was 19, she was a huge fan and I wasnt, she left
With MIDI automation it’s difficult to change tempo and meter the way she does here. Not impossible, but it goes against the grain.
Had a girlfriend when i was 19, she was a huge fan and I wasnt, she left me with my metal, how things change
Hi does anyone know what kind of Martin she's playing? Thanks!
I believe its a '53 00-18
Thanks Chris!

Whod'da thought?
Yes, and who'da ever been ready for it.
Sounds a Scottish song
Love this song and love Janis, but it sounds like it's about suicide?
It is. She’s mourning her dead loved one and wishing to join him.
A movie by the same title dealt with Gay son.
