The best word to describe Judy Collins is ethereal.
Excellent choice as it fits her so well!
I have been a classical music performer for 50 years, but I will never forget when this song came out! I was and am so deeply moved by her talent and artistry! Listening again at 75 years old with admiration and love, What a musical poet!
At 73 now listening to Judy's angelic voice still makes me cry hearing this song. I sing this to my own dad who died when he was 40. I miss him still.
She is the only performer I can think of that always sound better in person, her voice is simply magical.
Judy's songs were defining to so many of us of that boomer generation. I continue to personally identify with many of her songs so many years later.
I was the tailgun of the boom and at age 9 I was transfixed. By this song and Both Sides Now , like another 25-30 songs by various like Prine, Harris, John Denver and S&G woke me in about 1970 and haven’t slept since
My dear father, the hardest worker, the funniest, the best man, went to heaven almost 4 years ago. He and I used to send this song to each other at odd times. For no reason. I have three brothers. Only daughter. And a challenge for any Dad! I miss him madly. The "sentiment" of the song captures our special love.
Yours was my first concert in Houston, TX, 1969, Judy. I remember this song. It stopped my breath so I could hear all your lyrics. I so loved my father, too. I remember that someone asked how you could get through those lyrics without crying and you said that you have to practice it over and over until all the tears have worked themselves out. God bless you, Judy, this is timelessly beautiful. I saw you again in concert in Portland OR around 2015-16. You were surrounded by people who loved you and you were able to bring your painted music songs of life, love, and heart.
Judy is really an angel sent down to sing to us all.
My goodness, what an incredibly stunning perfect voice. There are female
singers still performing folk songs but really none that I can think with the purity of voice like Judy Collins or Joan Baez. Not with a voice with this incredible range and purest folk voice.
Joan Baez and Judy Collins sound so alike,
I remember when I bought the album and first heard this song. I was hooked for life. Saw her in concert several times, and it was always better that the vinyl, and she was perfect! But I will never part with my vinyl. That's where my best memories are stored, and I remember them even better now!
Amazing
My mom was born 9 days after Judy Collins, and also in Seattle. I remember her albums in our various homes as a child. My mom died a few years back.
My father, an ordinary South London worker, loved this song. I played him a Judy Collins album with this song on it and a few weeks later he bought it. I knew it was his secret dream. Whenever I hear it I think of him and the tears stream down my cheeks.
I love your comment, and bless you. My own wonderful dad took his life when I was 17 so I can only look back at my young relationship with him. So poignant.
Same North of the river ❤😊
My father indeed told us that we were moving to France. We did for a year. My father lived in France from 1967 to 2022. He died at 100 years old. I cry every time I hear this beautiful song.

Judy Collins is a fabulous singer songwriter... We were fortunate to grow up and be influenced by such brilliant artists ❤
I played this song on Guitar at my father’s funeral - key of A
I learned if from her wonderful piano version of this deeply personal song.
(I never knew she did a Guitar version until finding this video)
This version is extremely emotional for her….
This song brings back precious memories of my loving and generous father. I miss you, Dad!
She has an incredible voice with amazing talent.
Immerses me in my own sad sweet memories of so long ago.
What a beautiful and calming voice!
Thank you, Judy. As you know, one of the best things about being a musician is that you make so many people happy. It's not an easy life, but knowing how you help other people makes it all worth the trials.
I got this song decades ago on your album. Would play that record over and over. Thank you.
As a junior in high school, I was smitten with Judy Collins - in large part because of the beauty of this song. I told my girlfriend at the time that if I ever saw Judy Collins in concert, I’d walk to the front of the stage and lay one, single rose at her feet.
Now, more than a half century later, that girlfriend is my wife, and I still want to lay that rose on the stage. Here’s to you, Judy Collins.
How come in all these years you never saw Judy Collins in concert and took that rose to the stage?
Precioso. Me ha emocionado leer tu historia.
I love this with all my heart. Thank you Judy, thank you...
Very sweet story.
She’ll be in Sacramento CA very soon
I love my Dad.
Such a pure voice.
What a uniquely beautiful rendition. Thank you, Judy.
No auto tune, just the voice!
Ilove her playing the piano singing this song. Her voice is so, so pure. Thank you Judy xx
My father never saw France . I lived there . I wish he had visited me there. He would have loved as I did . He is gone now. Theres no chance for him to see anything with me now.
Yes that's the point isn't it.
I'm very sorry about your dad, it's so hard to lose the two people who loved you from day 1. I believe they become your guardian angels. Their with you, around you. Your father may have been sitting on your shoulders during the concerts, sometimes we can feel them around us. He'll always be there for you, he's in everything you do and say. Just something for you to think about. I wish you well ❤✨
Do you have to be so unkind? Why don't you keep it to yourself. That's a good idea!!
Beautiful song.
Happy Father’s Day dad
Brilliantly written and performed.
This Mortal Coil sent me here.
The original is just sublime.
Same
What a singer! What a song.
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY. Miss you so much Dad 😞
Catapults us back to a euphoric time
This is her song. No one else can sing it.
Nine Simone sang a beautiful version.
@@efrogwraig as did Peggy Lee , live and on YT video Peggy Lee Entertains. Seriously good version as is Nina's......
Man that is beautiful. Music from another dimension.
Last year (2021), Judy Collins gave a guest lecture by Zoom at our university; we were able to Chat her out questions as we listened. I immediately sent her a message, "What's the story behind 'My Father?'" Almost immediately she broke from her talk, sang the song and then talked about how she came to write it. As a teenager in the early 1970s I was definitely in love with her and her music. The only singer comparable to Collins' style and quality, who died very young before I had heard of her, is Kate Wolf.
Amazing song and voice.
This was always my favorite.
Happy to be the 500th "like"! Where is the "love" button?
Most beautiful song ever written ❤
"I love my father for sentimental reasons"
Kids: France? Monies or nothing!
This is a great song
Yes🌹
Judy Collins, “My Father”. What else needs to be said?

I wonder what she thought/thinks of Nina Simone’s rendition of this song ? I love it.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Not autobiographical in words judy but says so much in sentiment
Ahhh
É linda música
I'd like to see judy and lucie horshe on the same stage (heaven)
The memory of trees
Beautiful song. Nina Simone did a beautiful cover as well.
If you Sang the Constitution, maybe people would understand It!
Not the Repukelicans. They have absolutely no concept of, or appreciation for, integrity or freedom.
Eric Trump talks about “my father” quite a lot, too.
Sad. Father was a liar
