    Fun coincidence, I just replaced the tensioner on my 5.9 ZJ last week. You may not have picked up on it, but at 3:45 there's a good lesson for novices--and a reminder for experienced wrenchers. Anytime you're working with metal tools near exposed terminals (battery terminal, alternator terminal, starter terminal, etc.), always be careful not to touch your tool (which is usually in contact with a bolt that's grounded to the chassis) to that terminal. It'll create a light show, scare the bejesus out of you, and possibly damage the vehicle's electronics. Keep up the great vids, I'm really enjoying the ZJ project...

    I have been running Jeeps for almost 20 years now and I just discovered your YT Channel. I spent 20+ years on active duty and am now a retired Marine, but still a Marine. Had to wait till my kids grew up for their not to be any excuses for me getting the Wrangler of my dreams. That was Betty. I am now on Betty III with a 2017 74th Anniversary Edition 2 door Wrangler and she is SMOKIN' !! I wanted to tell you that I look forward to binge watching a good number of your videos as I get her into shape for a good muddy rompin" !! You men seem to have your heads on straight and I noticed that most of your tips could apply to my vision for Betty III and they made a damn good bit of sense! Keep up the good work and mabey I'll see ya'll on the trail some day.

      Jaysson Tansey No joke!, the rigs at our junk yards don't even have the engines in em.. all ther good for is the miscellaneous interior stuff and most body parts

    • @brandonandrews6258
      @brandonandrews6258 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard somewhere if you leave your batteries on concrete over night it'll drain em... not sure why ..but I was always told to set em on a wood block or something to keep em from dying

    • @brianbird3756
      @brianbird3756 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brandon Andrews while it's true that concrete IS a good conductor of electricity, the outer shell of the battery is insulated and there's very little chance of the concrete draining the battery unless the insulation is damaged, but then the same would happen in your metal battery tray...

    • @brandonandrews6258
      @brandonandrews6258 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Bird Hmm.. good point.. I never really looked into it, someone just told me that... what about in cold weather conditions though?.. you think concrete could make the affect cold weather has on batteries worse?

    if the belt jumps off a pulley check all the bearings in all the pulleys. it happened to me. ended up being water pump throwing the belt off

  • @edgeofvamp
    @edgeofvamp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another slighty safer method of hearing the pulley bearings. Get a long screwdriver and put a cone or empty jug on the handle end to act as a resonator.
    Then go through with that, keeps your head away further away from moving parts.

    I'm doing the same thing right now. Just bought my 96 zj in March before I found out about operation cheap Jeep, coincidently I used the same project name lol. Needed new rad, fuel filter, fluid changes. Found out I had a leaky water pump, no big deal, took fan off and fumbled it. 8 holes in the brand new rad, there was a lot of bleepin'.....
    Hope there's better luck in the future for both our cheap Jeeps!

  • @MrMrsregor
    @MrMrsregor 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    maybe the belt jumps off the AC pulley because the harmonic balancer is falling apart. when the out side of the balancer separates from the inside it becomes out of like and can ever cut into the engine block

    • @robertleephillipsiii577
      @robertleephillipsiii577 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrMrsregor I second this, I went through two belts before my buddy pointed it out to me.that little bit poking out made my belt jump right off my ac also.

  • @felixvargas4112
    @felixvargas4112 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    My ZJ belt had the same squeaky issue. Drove me crazy. I finally loosened the 4 bolts that hold the a/c compressor on and pushed the compressor towards the firewall and then re-tightened the bolts. Fixed it!! The belt was out of alignment just a hair...

    • @felixvargas4112
      @felixvargas4112 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin spacey I did all that too. then finally pushed back the compressor. it has just enough play room to fix the squeal. notice, he is doing the first things we did...lolol

    • @felixvargas4112
      @felixvargas4112 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      loosen them, start the engine, and move the compressor until you find the sweet spot...then quickly tighten them

    • @felixvargas4112
      @felixvargas4112 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      and also, take a small flathead screwdriver and clean out the pulley grooves on the power steering pump. its probably got little bits of belt rubber in there..

    • @CCCommander
      @CCCommander 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Cleveland PAP is great and usually has a half a dozen ZJs and another handful of XJs. Never any TJs though--they all seem to wind up in dedicated Jeep salvage yards. But holy hell, you guys are spoiled in southern salvage yards full of rust free stuff. That green ZJ had no business being there!

    • @wdesign1189
      @wdesign1189 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      CCCommander I couldn't agree more, that poor jeep better have blown a hole in a piston or something!! Dang fool giving that thing up.

    • @CCCommander
      @CCCommander 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I'd argue that on a clean bodied ZJ, a blown engine shouldn't mean the end either. That one was a 4.0L...easy to pull and even easier to source a replacement.

    I had this type of issue just last weekend...turned out to be alignment. bracket holding the top idler bearing was slightly knocked out of shape...probably due to high speed water impact. reshaped bracket and aligned as best i could with shims and using a straight edge. all good now.

  • @Josh_Jans
    @Josh_Jans 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    those ZJ's sometimes have a short in the computer that kicks the ignition coil on and off. I bet all those new parts were to try and fix that problem of it running bad. it can feel like it needs a good tune up. I know because my ZJ had the same problem. luckily i did some research and just soldered a pin in the computer and fixed the problem.

    Being a trained auto tech. I have worked in a few shops over the years. Ran my own shop for several years now . I have seen the effects of storeing batteries in a concrete floor or the bare ground first hand many time. I have sold many batteries to people who just didnt know any better than to leave a battery on concrete without haveing some type of barrier under there battery. Go to any any parts store, shop, dealership service deptment they will always have batteries on a shelf or rack of some type. never stored on the bare floor for ground. Unless there cores..

    5.2 and 5.9 magnum v8s are notorious for bad tensioner pulleys and idler pulleys. also notorious for the power steering pump bracket cracking. id inspect that too. someone makes a billet bracket on ebay. also zjs love when you clean all electrical connections and grounds under the hood. it was night and day after cleaning everything on my zj. almost forgot to mention that a gummed up or bad iac sensor will make them run crappy too.

    I saw a tip on SOUTH MAIN AUTO page from eric o. that if you take a long ass screw driver and cut the top half of a jug off and tape the pour spout portion of the jug to the handle of the screw driver it makes almost aloud horn effect of a bad bearing y touching it with the screw driver tip.

    That distributor looks exactly like the one I picked up from autozone that had the 2.5 liter gear on it instead of the 4 liter. seems like a lot of new parts on that thing.

  • @blainekrueger
    @blainekrueger 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matt, that squeaking sure sounds like what my 99 Dakota with the 5.2 was doing. Replaced the alternator, and the tensioner and it turned out it was the AC clutch. Sounded exactly like that. See if your AC works. I still have the new clutch I bought for it (ended up replacing the whole compressor). Let me know if you need it.

  • @kingmabb
    @kingmabb 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeap the life of a ZJ owner. I know this very well. The hose trick is something I will try, I have had a squeeky pulley for months now and after replacing 4 of them its about time to find the bad egg. Finally gave up on AZ batteries and Alternators and went to Orilees. Gonna see how long they last.

  • @tylerstewart1226
    @tylerstewart1226 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you check the pulley alignment? I had a very similar squeak after I replaced the power steering pump on my chevy pickup. The pulley went on 1/4" too far, pulling it out of alignment by that much. And that was enough to make the belt chirp like that and not track straight.

    usually when your see a car with new parts on it at the junkyard it's because they threw a bunch of money at it and didn't do proper diagnostics. yes you can get new parts for cheap but would you pay money for a part that was most likely installed wrong and might not work.

    I have a question for you. My 1988 Cherokee will not shift up when it's put into drive, or won't go into passing gear when I press the gas pedal down. What could be the problem?

    at the end it was like the battery was dead or low loose connection at battery or starter

    that new batt was only 12.1 volts or so. that's a dead battery. new it should be 12.9v or used it should be around 12.6v. anything lower than 12.3v is dead.

    you really need to put your batteries on a block of wood or an old rubber floor mat when you are chargeing them or storeing them. just setting them on the concret floor or the ground in general can drain then of there charge

      But yeah, modern batteries don't give a crap about concrete.

      do things your way guess you could say im old school better safe than sorry . I would rather not have to buy a battery if it can be avoided. I know batteries are incased in better materials than they were in the past but you still need to protect them from any possible discharge by setting them on the ground or on concrete. enough said do your thing ill do mine

    My god... if I ever saw that many Cherokees in a yard I would be in heaven. I"m lucky if I can even find an XJ between the yards I have visited in my area. Even in the past when I was in Ocala and drove to a place an hour away I found about 2 grand cherokees and neither of them helped me out. I ended up having to use Car-Parts.com to find another place 2-3 hours away. How far do you have to drive to get to a place like that from your house?
