The self-help category of books is overflowing. Many of the books are written by individuals who project their views and experiences, declaring their findings as irrefutable. I think it would make sense to build a "book list" of works that are recommendable and psychologically valid. i.e.: I found "the body keeps the score" to be quite valuable. Do you have a preferred reading list?
Maybe you should make an emotional first aid kit, you give really good advise and it would be great to actually have products aimed at mental health done by actual psychologists...
Yeah the School of Life is much more philosophically focused, for better or ill, and offering philosophical advice seems how their "first aid kit" functions. The "I'm so lonely" card, for example, was meant to give comfort by reminding the reader that loneliness is a universal human condition, and that is meant to alleviate any existentialist angst. Caveat emptor.
Hmm, philosophy? I have noticed that their (School of Life) videos seem to start off promising, but they then just seem to fall short of either substance or nuance foe differing situations, people, etc. Perhaps if “philosophy” help means a one-size-fits-all solution for seeing the big picture (vs your own viewpoint and situation), I’d agree.
Yeah, I've watched School of Life for a long time and really enjoyed it until I saw their videos on depression and anxiety and realized they aren't really offering practical advice like they say they are. I still like their videos on philosophy and history though.
Thank you for your review!!! I have fibromyalgia and suffer from difficulty with sleep. My doc gave me OTC helpful tips as well as the typical tips people get from a med pro. I kinda wish pros like you would create a product like this... especially to encourage people to find help outside of themselves. We l need more accessible science. Your psychological first aid video was fantastic.
I love the concept and it's something I've been creating for myself. In my journal, I've been putting sticky notes on the inside front and back covers. Some have grounding exercises for my anxiety/ptsd flashbacks and others have quotes that I like: either ones that remind me of the universality of my feelings or ones that actually uplift and encourage me. I also keep happy pictures and mementos in there to cheer me up. I always keep my journal with me, which is comforting because I know I have different tools in there to help me if I get overwhelmed. Thanks for another great video!!! You're awesome!!!
Loved this video so much!!! Great not only to learn that there are products out there like these, but also how companies making them pay attention to the help they are providing. This is a really important and interesting topic!
I love the school of life ! Their candles are just the best thing! Originally they are a group of psychotherapists. They also do workshops and so on in London (I've never been). I think I recall they represents different schools of psychotherapy. They make youtube videos which are great and then they make the design products too. They are about concepts and philosophies rather than self-help guides so people who seek the latter aren't they target market. They want concepts and philosophies of psychotherapy to be more widespread to the public hence the videos etc. The consultations fees they offer are on the high-end spectrum of London and I would say the products like the one you have is targetted for those who are in therapy with them (and therefore address those ideas) and professionals in the field of psychotherapy. A lot of their writing fits with Gestalt or phenomenology for example. Therefore they don't come from a behavioural approach to things. They are not researchers and you don't necessarily need a psychology degree to become a psychoanalyst for example or another school of psychotherapy (providing you still fit their requirements of entry). I studied art psychotherapy and it's very different than academic psychology. Degrees in psychology in the UK never teach counselling skills, empathy and the need for personal therapy so as to avoid transference with the people you work with. Whereas psychotherapy schools will do so. My school was all experiential so you learned by constantly being the client or therapist. I also learned how psychotherapeutic and philosophical concepts are now backed up by neuroscience which supports the knowledge of empathy and plays therapy for example. Psychotherapists and clinical psychologists are incredibly different here in the UK. The former prefer expressions of the self and the inner world, safe space to explore said emotions and to dive deeper to gain true awareness (the changing Gestalt paradox of change is inevitable when you accept where you are/are aware of yourself in the present) while the latter favours research and studies to implement generalised behaviours to do or not do, and to focus on the surface problem (behaviour) by focusing on the thoughts patterns (use of CBT for example). Personally, I'm for a mix of both. 🙌
I love this review! It’s fair and balanced but tbh I hold similar views about TSoL I love the approach they take towards topics and I think there is so much value in taking a philosophical approach but as a first aid kit it’s a big task because .... even though suffering is universal from my very short experience of life even though we don’t appreciate it each person I’ve ever met has the most unique, intricate and sophisticated set of circumstances for which I’m sure an evidence base would be difficult to find A bit like how we do understand the principles cancer but at the same time we don’t know the mechanism. That’s why I’m torn every time I come across TSoL because science and philosophy definitely go hand in hand but as a layperson I feel inadequate because concepts like emotions, values and philosophy are so intangible. I’m going to go on a tangent but I only wanted to say I really like your videos and they always leave me thinking long after I view them I also think I just get happy seeing another person that looks a little like me creating such a positive and meaningful work Take care Ali! :)
1. Been following for awhile. Super into this channel still. 2. This organization is awesome. 3. I'd love to hear your thoughts over becoming an LCSW who works from within their house?
Thanks for the great review! I'd love a video about triggers. There's a debate on German twitter right now if you should use trigger warnings on e.g. tweets like content notes beforehand and if they're really helpful or not. What does triggering mean exactly, what is helpful, are trigger warnings needed, who gets triggered and what does help people who get triggered. :)
I am glad I have found this channel! :D Would love you to make such first aid kit. I have made one on my own with little help of my theraphist but it would be great to have extra ideas
It would be super cool if you made a video on tips for new therapists or if you made a video talking about Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy. I'm going to be a behavioral therapist in the next month or so.
I would love to see you do some react videos to personalities in shows like Kitchen Nightmares or Hotel Impossible. Lots of abnormal psychology and strange behaviors under stress.
This was an amazing review to watch - and I’m delighted to find you! I’d wondered about buying them to review for our research, and thank you for saving me the time and expense! Can we connect to discuss what you’d most like to see in an improved version of that? We’re working on one here! Sent you email. Hope to connect som. THANK YOU a for all the time and effort you put into helping all of us!
I was in a social psychology class recently and the teacher mentioned something called a "Moral Injury" I would like to know more about what she was talking about.
In short i'ts a great pain you feel when you did or saw something which goes directly against your values. I saw diagrams which described it as a more cognitive brother of PTSD. From what I read I think it sort of resembles cognitive dissonance (I assume you know what that is if you take social psychology classes). Another interesting phenomenon is "collective guilt" which means feeling guilt for what other people of a group you identify yourself with have done. For instance I am Dutch. The Dutch colonized multiple countries in the past and are now very rich. I feel collective guilt if I feel sorry for the people from the countries we colonized. Interesting enough it seems we feel more guilty if we think about how good we have it thanks to them instead of when we think of how bad the situation was for them. Hope this was sort of clear. Cheers, a psychology student
Its interesting that you did not follow up with the teacher. Even if its a large lecture format, I am sure the instructor has office hours available. Thats less confusing than us guessing for you. Having said that - I think Moral Injury may refer to the profound guilt and shame of participating in activities that are in conflict with or are dissonant with ones fundamental moral values. We may all be subject to moral injury if we come to recognize that a role we play does harm to others that we never envisioned or imagined we would do...and we continue to do it. Its an existential issue, a conflict that challenges our perception of who we are or who we ever expected to be. We could all be subject to moral injury if we had a job that we came to realize was poisoning the atmosphere, or contradicting the deepest cultural values of children we were working with, or we had to serve as soldiers and then came to doubt the war. Even if we did not witness a sudden or immediately traumatic event as a result of our activities, the dawning recognition that we were harming others AND the cognitively dissonent belief that we had no option to stop doing harm, wears upon us and we “burn out”at these jobs and occupations. I imagine that deeply conflicted feelings about ones interpersonal role within a family system might result in a moral injury, too, like from abetting an abuser. I guess its beginning to be recognized that symptoms of moral injury can look just as profound and even mimic symptoms of PTSD.
I prefer Dr kirk Honda in psychology in seattle because he still respects the person or organism or the ideas that he reacts too without us feeling like he's belittling the subject he's reacting to and I'm sorry but this is how I felt about your video.. I respect the people who respects the work of other people and still give their honest 'respectful' opinion and not making fun of their work and belittling it.. The concept of the school of life is different than a psychological 'only' approach and they've done a lot of helpful work for a lot of people through their videos, games books etc.. We do not all work the same, so each one of us finds what soothes him and it does not make one thing bad and the other one better.
Unmumsy Musings - Josephine_kk I too like the concept but didn’t find it too helpful. I thinking making your own emotional first aid kit based on what works for you might be more helpful. Maybe I should make a video about that!

How about we compete with this product? We design a similar product but more reader friendly and more theoretically/therapeutically backed? Let's do this, Dr Mattu! 😂
What should I review next?!?

This is a great idea! I could create a series of videos reviewing self-help books on topics like anxiety, anger, productivity, etc.
@@drali That would be awesome. Also, mental health app reviews would be really helpful; starting with top ones from Psyberguide :).
Can you please review this heidihanna.com/ Thank you Ali!
Yes!! Please! self help book reviews! I struggle with recommending to my clients appropriate books that aren't text books😂

martini1179 yeah I agree. I have thought that when I watched their videos as well. Much more philosophical than clinically based.

I had insomnia, still do but sleep hygiene really helped. I took out my TV from my bedroom. not having my phone next to me in bed etc
Unmumsy Musings - Josephine_kk those two steps are SOOO helpful! Getting my phone out of my bed (and not watching tv in bed) always helps me 👍🏽
Thank you for your review!!!

What was the context there?

Agreed. I love the concept of the product.
unique + interesting concept but could it be a little too complicated for someone who's looking for a little kick in more challenging times?
Unmumsy Musings - Josephine_kk I too like the concept but didn’t find it too helpful. I thinking making your own emotional first aid kit based on what works for you might be more helpful. Maybe I should make a video about that!

lmao “a patient of mine” 😂
hm yes there should be more design for mental health....🤔
I literally only bought it because it was pretty. I highly suggest their Confidence Cards or Calm Cards!! Those are great
