Would you consider pausing the video while you're speaking at length? It's a bit difficult to listen to two voices at once. Loved the video though! I was cracking up at the clown part. :P And your reaction to the X-Men scene is really touching
Argh, yes! Especially if you're a bit neurodivergent & can't process overlapping audio inputs, his review constantly becomes completely incomprehensible 😪
Thanks for the shout-out Ali! As a military psychologist, I'll give CDR Troi a B+ in being true to form. I think the later seasons were much better as she assumed some of the command and leadership coaching roles you see psychologists in the military fill today. And your point about dual roles and integrating with the crew is spot on. I also have to factor in the historical context of the show which gives me a much greater appreciation for how she was portrayed at the time
Thanks so much for watching and your encouraging comment! Navigating copyright issues is always a challenge with these videos but I'll DEF keep making more.
Fascinating video, my man. But it's often tough to follow what you're saying when the audio of the clips are playing overtop of you, especially a musical number.
Thanks for the feedback, Nick! I was debating how high to set the volume. Feedback like this is super helpful. I'll make sure it's lower on the next one.
@@drali It might be useful to have a clip play before stopping it to comment on it. Then viewers can absorb all of what you are saying as well all of what the characters are saying. As well as knowing what you are referring to when you are speaking.
Frasier actually sends people to get properly diagnosed in the show. He'll deduce what the problem might be and then send the callers to a proper therapist.
Dr. Melfi on Sopranos really introduced me to the idea of psychotherapy. I always enjoyed her interactions with Tony. The rape situation where she didn't give in to letting Tony know was crazy the first time though. Thought she was going to let him handle the situation.
I'm a huge science fiction fan and grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation, I'm also a research psychologist/neuroscientist in NASA's Behavioral Health and Performance group. I do want to confirm that like Deanna, our group of psychologists here not only provide mental health services, but also as industrial/organizational psychologists who deal with things such as personnel/crew management. It's not always the same person but we do have people who do both roles. Also I completely agree with you about the future of mental health, we are doing work either here at NASA or funding at universities and academic medical centers on a lot of the areas you mentioned including remotely and computer guided psychotherapy and non-invasive real-time monitoring of behavioral health. I could give extensive information, but I want to keep this comment readable. The one thing you did not mention that I do find odd, though I have to admit this is my personal bias, is that Deanna does not work more closely with Dr. Crusher and the rest of the medical staff onboard. Currently our program does keep behavioral health somewhat separate from the rest of the medical care, our psychologists work alongside psychiatrists. In the future as we learn more about the brain, cognition, and behavior, that mental health will become more integral to the practice of medicine. I don't think we're going to lose the need for clinical psychologists/psychotherapists, but I would hope that in the future they and their services are less segregated from medical care. P.S. Dr. Mattu or other mental health communicators, feel free to reach out if the topic of mental health and spaceflight comes up. - Jason Schneiderman PhD
I would love for you to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5 Episode 16 "The Body" Her mother dies unexpectedly and everyone is reacting and coping differently with their grief. It's the most realistic portrayal of dealing with death I've ever seen, and it's critically acclaimed as "the best hour of television of all time." So I think it would be pretty wonderful for a psychologist to review it.
A review of online therapy chatrooms, websites, or session would be really interesting. I've tried the ones that you can do over text messaging, and it has actually proved more harmful than helpful in many cases.
I've received a few requests to review online therapy. I *might* do an episode on that but until I do this might be helpful for you: thewirecutter.com/reviews/online-therapy-services/
I think Guinan may have been a better therapist than Deanna. I realize she may not have been licensed, but her methods sometimes involved food. And I think I’d respond better to that than tapping on my head.
Love the video!! On the subject of permission and personal boundaries, the therapist from friends (one of phoebe's boyfriends if i recall well) was really invasive. Oh for piaget you got yo check therapist in telenovelas!!!!! Seriously, you can find from the well intentioned characters that help people to the over the top weird ones. Some portraits suffer the GTA ambulance effect; they kill like 7 persons on their way to survive one. Episodes that are well intentioned treating one topic on mental health, but just bring other issues in the wrong way. Telenovelas are such a weird thing...
Hi I liked your video a lot. The only problem is that I want to watch the scene AND listen to your professional analysis of it. I liked when you talked when Frasier and his client paused in their speech. Then I could listen to you and analyze the scene myself and get my own thoughts on it too. But when you talked over the other scenes I couldn’t examine them. Can’t wait for more videos like these in the future :)
I know why it took me so long to find this channel finally A shrink analyzing Artist fears and desires as seen on TV personified as psychologist in these fictions getting psychoanalyze by a real TH-cam therapist
One thing I like about Frazier as a show, not him as a character... is that it showed a lot of people needing therapy, everyday people, him and his family and friends, it showed that therapy is not just for a fringe group of “mentally ill” people I can’t remember if it represented mental illness well, but it did show that therapy is for anyone and everyone
"I don't touch my patients..." Joe Navarro describes the power of physical contact in his body language book, What Every Body Is Saying. It creates a basis of trust. It's so interesting. Obviously not inappropriate touching... But it's just difficult to know whether or not someone will appreciate contact. Do laws forbid you to establish physical contact with clients?
I love this. As a newly licensed counselor in Texas these videos are so helpful in remembering techniques, approach, and skill. I think you have also chosen some really intriguing footage from Star Trek. Arrested Development... hilarious. I am intrigued with the exposure therapy and actually dressing as a clown. Will you do a video on that?
It was a ton of fun to make! I covered a lot more in the original cut of this video but there are a lot of copyright limitations on the the material. So what you see is what can be posted on TH-cam.
Okay, so in regards to Troi you have to remember that it was made in the late 80s early 90s. That was probably somewhat accurate for the time. They wanted to make it relatable and that's why there's no ai diagnosing and treating patients. It may have been set in the future but it had underlying commentary on things that were and are legitimate social and cultural concerns. Outdated now? Oh yeah. Back then? Maybe not as much as you think. My second comment/question is why can't you just talk to someone over Skype or the phone and do sessions that way? I feel like people would be just as honest that way as they are in an office. (Also, that's one reason I will not go see a therapist/psychologist/etc anymore. I feel too trapped. Not cool.) And lastly I have a question about trauma: can trauma like witnessing a violent event and being in the middle of it mess with your memory? Thanks man! You're so kind and I love that you're sharing knowledge with us!
“Plexing” appears to be a tapping technique, focused on the vagus nerve, which is behind the carotid artery. Plexus = a bundle of nerves. I’m actually surprised the writers knew enough about this to include it, although they probably shouldn’t have said it was a Betazoid technique, considering differences in anatomy between species.
Amazing! Could you review the mental breakdown of Daenerys Targaryen in the final season of Game of Thrones? Is it realistic or did it escalate too quickly?
I don't think Xavier has the luxury of having different people to fulfil all his roles. The only other person I can think of that has that sort of psychology skillset, who works with mutants, is Moira MacTaggart, and she lives on another continent. Also, Troy has a human father, so she's not entirely betazoid.
Good point about Xavier. This brings up other ethical concerns. Specifically, sometimes psychologists have to practice in places where there aren't other providers and may have no choice but to experience multiple relationships. This might be the case for Xavier. Regarding Troi, her physiology might make plexing, but there's no guarantee it would work on someone who's 100% human.
Hi i just saw this movie called “unsane” and it is about a woman that need psychological help but the twist was if she really needed it or not or if she was really crazy . My problem with Troi is that, at least in the very early seasons, she was about as useful as a potted plant! LOL. The Enterprise would be under attack and her great insight? "Captain, I sense hostility and pain from the beings attacking us!" Oh, really? And you have a degree in psychotherapy? Wow. LOL. Also, her uniform is cut a little too low. I would be turned on and distracted if I had to interact with her for any length of time. C'mon, Deanna! Wear something more professional.
What should I review next!?!
Love your videos, i Would love it if you did a review of anger management (the movie)
Greetings from a swedish fan 😊💙
I'd love you to check out the show Go On. It was cancelled years ago but it's centered around group therapy.
It would be SOO cool if you reviewed Criminal Minds. Greetings from Germany :)
It would be cool.. if you can review the therapy sessions on Lucifer (tv series). Thanks!
Oh and of course put Goodwill hunting on your list

I also remember Phoebe's therapist boyfriend. And there is a therapist in 'two and a half men' too. And in the movie 'good will hunting'.
I had that exact thought about using the holodeck for therapy! I'm glad you said it.

One of my favourite therapy scenes is the therapist on Rick & Morty on the Pickle Rick episode.
This was awesome! I just realized I haven't actually watched the x-men series. I think I know what I'm doing this weekend.
My work here is done.
Have you ever seen the show Gypsy? It basically about a therapist with 0 boundaries lol
I haven't! I should check it out. Also, "therapist with 0 boundaries" sounds like 90% of the therapists in TV and film 😆

Prof.X is a geneticist not a Psychologist.
Yeah Deanna Troy is kind of worthless almost as much as commander Riker
