- Today we're looking at a rather peculiar trio in Pokémon RBY, the three mons who are currently on the Neverused Banlist! Golduck, Poliwrath and Raichu all had their time in the spotlight causing chaos in NU, but they all took it a little too far.
Now they're stuck being too strong for NU, but not being used in UU enough to be considered official Underused mons. Still, I thought it'd be fun to cover what got them banned in the first place, and how they're holding up now!

Important lil update: NUBL just became a big 4, Poliwhirl was also banned from NU!
Importanter BIG update, as of Feb 2024, NUBL doesn't exist! Raichu rose to UU and the other NUBL mons returned to NU!

When you said quick-banned, I immediately thought of Golduck and Polywrath just walkin along the street,and then they both get kidnapped by a white van.

The fact that Poliwrath, one of the best fighting types in the game, is forced to use a special sweeping set to have a niche in OU is just beyond sad. Smogon takes no prisoners huh.
It says a lot that the best fighting type is the one that's the best at working around the fact it's a fighting type

To its credit, it can actually make use of STAB Submission to break down Chansey and AmnesiaLax, which is genuinely one of the only reasons to run it over Slowbro

Goes to show that Smogon is just as much a meme as it is something others take seriously. It's just as fascinating as it can be hilarious to watch these people try to balance this franchise's mechanics when it has always had similar genes to the "kill or be killed"-environment of Megaten games.
All I can say is good luck with Gen 9, folks. Whoever decided to give the mouse a Kannuki-Throw on crack must have been high himself. Also, I see the grave dog's busy making new friends.
Mewtwo was charged with the usage of banned items, under the 7th section of the Geneva Convention, stating that “ Though shalt not use Amnesia and Bolt Beam, as this violates the RBY conventions, of the 999 statistic clause.”

Imagine an alternate timeline where Tauros, Snorlax, and Chansey are all banned to Ubers.
That timeline would be weird. No Tauros for revenge sweeps means Persian would actually stay in OU.
Rhydon becomes mandatory since it'd be the only thing that can stand up to Zapdos. And by proxy, Golem might actually be better, since you essentialy get 2 Ground types. Heck, I could even see Sandslash being decent. It's already niche as a Swords Dance sweeper, so if ground types are even more important, I could see it having more of a place.
And with this, I honestly think Exeggutor becomes the best mon. It wrecks Rhydon, has sleep and para and explosion. With more ground types being used to counter elec types, and the physics being better, I could honestly see Lapras coming back into OU purely because of that.
Assuming Gengar even stays in the tier, it'll be way worse due to more EQ
Something else i love is that all of these pokemon are also NUBL in gsc.

The thing that differs then is that raichu did another minor crime he did an acidental hit on someone and the police caught him doing it.

If UU is the midtiers and RU is the low tiers, Melee NU would be Ness, Pichu, Zelda, Kirby, and Bowser. Of those, Pichu is pretty clearly the best imo.

Bowser's bad traits matter less to characters that can't reliably exploit them the same way as Melee's top tiers.
Bowser's raw, stupid statbrick and big number might make him a terror in Melee NU

Man, poor Poliwrath. Imagine being the only fully evolved Gen 1 pokemon that loses speed on evolution. Gotta wonder what its chances might have been if it was at least allowed to keep 'Wag and 'Whirl's 90 speed.
to be fair i really have no idea why they were given 90 speed in the first place, it feels kinda wacky that they're only 5 points slower than a freaking arcanine. Obviously a tadpole is a pretty agile swimmer in water, but that's the thing. It's only supposed to be fast in water.

coulda had a niche in ou but it matches up terribly against the big three and tentecruel in the respective tiers while also providing nothing in those tiers other mons cannot and it fell all the way to nu where it remains

I find it kinda cool that Pokemon RBY (a Gameboy game) is such a content heavy game that two mons essentially play exactly the same despite being on two vastly different power scales (Golduck and Mewtwo, both mons who set up amnesia, brutalize everything except themselves, and then spam ice moves to try and defeat other Golduck/Mewtwo.)
I just like how the Gameboy pulled that off in a time *before* a lot of games were defined by how many hundreds of hours of content they had relative to their price.
Or how Golduck and Poliwrath play differently despite seeming so similar at first

Uh, yeah, I can see that. Even for me, a guy who just plays the campaigns and mostly runs attack moves, the Venusaur I had in Pokémon Omicron (neat fan game) was more or less a sleep button for catching stuff. Really a status button in general. Even I know not letting it sleep stuff really hurts it.
It does have the fastest razor Leaf in the game, but, like, how often do you really NEED STAB Razor Leaf in order to fill a hole in your team? It still loses to Tentacruel because it’s part poison (the one time that actually ends up being useful), Dugtrio is going to slap it with EQ and probably not stick around anyway, Hypno just nukes with Psychic and is better handled by physical attacks anyway….
People dunk on Meganium for being poopoo, but Venusaur arguably had it even worse in its competitive debut than Meg’s debut, just because NO ONE wants to be a poison type. If Gengar weren’t poison, it would probably be the Big Four. If Cruel weren’t poison, it would probably be a niche pick in OU, as a SD Wrapper with the ability to obliterate Rhydon, and naturally outspeeding a lot of things

Tentacruel probably gets the most out of Poison in all of gen 1, being neutral to Grass is actually pretty good, and it doesn't mind the Psychic weakness AS MUCH as a lot of others.
And Tentacruel would still probably ditch it in a heartbeat.
Still don't understand why so many pokemon in Gen 1 got that type anyway. Like, why does the bush have the Poison-type? How is the ball of evil spirit poisonous?
Gengar is only a poison type so it would actually have a weakness. The poison type was a curse/nerf because gamefreak knew he would be top 5 without it

Today I learned that BL stands for Ban List, not Border Line.
Honestly I think ppl use them interchangeably because they mean the same. Ban list is probably better because it's more clear to newer players to smogon but borderline sounds cooler imo I imagine they're just stuck in limbo for something

Gen 1 apparently seems to have a lot of big threes. Even the 1999 TCG has a big three (Hitmonchan representing hyper-offensive decks, Blastoise representing energy acceleration decks, and Chansey representing stall and mill decks) as three staples of the most common deck archetypes

For me its mostly the black nails, I've been doing it for a couple years (also black, tho Big Yellow does do other colors sometimes here) and I've caught some questioning about it due to the area I live in, but don't care. It's good to just be and do whatever you want.

Great video as always. If I may make a request for your next video about a particular type in RBY, I think fire would be a good option, since its popularity is not reflected in its viability (I remember you mentioning seeing way too many Charizards in OU battles).
I defo wanna talk about Fire but the one thing putting me off is that the Fire types in RBY mostly have very similar kits

The funniest thing about RBY Fire is in-game, actually. See, Flamethrower isn't a TM and Fire Blast is a TM you only get from Blaine. So most Fire-types have to wait for very late levels (as in, Growlithe only learns Flamethrower at level 55) or until after the seventh gym leader to finally have good STAB.
Hell, Moltres and Rapidash can never learn Flamethrower.

2:47 I think it'd be well worth a video/breakdown at some point on the different types of bans, because "quickbanned" seems pretty abstract speaking as someone outside of the competitive Pokémon scene. I would assume it's just like, a quickly applied ban, but what *makes* it quick? Is it time-based, is the due process more lax, or something else?
That's a good point, quickbans are just bans made without any community input like a vote. Technically there was no vote for Poliwrath and Raichu either, but there had been plenty of discussion around them and no one opposed a potential ban
It's quick due to there not being a vote needed.
If something is extremely overpowered and everyone knows it's going to get banned nearly unanimously if a vote was held, they don't bother with a vote.
I wonder if anyone's tried to play NUBL as its own tier as I'm curious how amnesia Golduck and Poliwrath would stack up in a tier with Raichu being possibly the biggest threat, probably poorly.

You used Clefable so much in this vid.
This is the catalyst to Clefable becoming OU. It remembered how much it got bullied in gen 1 and slowly but surely, it worked on itself to become the demon we know it for today.
I really like to use golduck in ou as a kind of fast/bulky surprise amnesia user, happy to hear about the blue dude.

Because of your vids I've gave Gen 1 OU a try and I've had a lot of fun running Poliwrath there. Like you said, not really a game changer. But under the right circumstances my boy can really put in the work.

Love this channel. I subbed for the fighting game analysis, became a fan for the pokemon content, and occasionally get the random, but very welcome Lego and insaneaquarium video.
Listening to you talk about Raichu really makes me wonder how Gorochu would have turned out if they left it in.
Hopefully they wouldn't do that thing they like doing where they mainly just give an evo a bunch of bulk without making it hit all that much harder, especially when they also decide to make something slower.

Wait, so why is sleep banned in RBY UU? why isn't it also banned in NU or PU?
UU is much more offensively orientated than OU, so Sleep just doesn't really fit the tier. You have much less opportunities to block sleep with something like a paralysed mon, damage is comparatively higher so missing Sleep is way more punishing, and it's even less likely to get the opportunity to wake up than in OU cause games are typically much shorter. As for NU and PU, sleep just doesn't really seem to be an issue yet. That could change over time but rn it's generally considered manageable
To fix your analogy: If the mews are war criminals and Lapras is a violent criminal, the NU big 3 were petty criminals, also great video, i absolutely love Raichu and Poliwrath so much
