September Harvests, a trip to Rassell's and Leek Bed dramas! || Plot 37 (Episode 76)

  • Such a busy time of year in the garden. And so much to harvest! In this weeks vlog i'm pruning the bay tree that is at the entrance to our allotment. I like to cut all the leaves away from the multi-stems to allow light to get to the bed underneath.
    I am making ground bay with the leaves and drying the Bay Leaves in this dehydrater:
    amzn.to/3ECabDy
    We also take a very quick trip to Rassell's of Kensington for Mr Lartice's birthday. Which is a fantastic independent garden centre in west London. If you fancy checking it out:
    Facebook Page: / rassellsnursery
    Instagram: www.instagram....
    We will be going back fro a proper look around because its the most wonderful place and i've been meaning to take you for such a long time!
    Back on the allotment we are sowing green manure, a mixed packet of Rye Grass, Vetch and Pea. I am leaving the Field Beans for a few weeks but got the Phacelia in last week so we are getting some stuff in for over-wintering. I also had a good look at the leek bed. we have three varieties of eek growing this year and one of them isn't doing too well! I'm not sure which one it is and will have to check back through my notes but we decided to take it out because we could do with the space under the insect netting and half of that variety had already bolted!
    We are picking Borlotti Beans, more French Beans, Basil, Tomatoes, Courgettes, Turnips....so many vegetables!

    I just want to say, I stumbled upon your channel a week or so ago and boy oh boy, you are one of the best channels if not the best. I used to follow few UK TH-cam gardners/alotmenteers and now I ditch them all, haha. You are informative, creative, entertaining, enlightened, kind, humble and a great cook. Lady, I don't only see a great growth in your channel but a book too, that includes gardening, useful tips and lots of recipes. Please don't change, keeping inspiring and smiling beautiful lady. ( a British expat living the good life in the mountains in central Italy alone with no car and very very little money, growing my food, keeping chickens, bartering with small local farmers, forging, etc. ...your videos made me miss London😩💕💚🌻

      Oh, I just want to say that turnip is my favourite vegetable..my late mum used to make this amazing stew (an old recipe from her Bedouin north African mother).. it has diced turnips, dry, shelled and desiccated broad beans, tomatoes, hot chillies, lots of herbs and spices especially cumin, then thickened with a bit of flour or rice flour if can't eat wheat like me..it's so aromatic and so delicious my comfort food in late autumn and winter. 😁😋

      @@JessieatPlot37 it's a family recipe, according to my late mum it was created by her Bedouin great grandmother who passed it on to her daughters..they even gave it a name😄....I forgot to mention you need to use garlic,3 or 4 big cloves....and the green tops of the turnip 😁..my mum used to add mincemeat sometimes but it's optional..and once it's cooked don't forget to add a heaped teaspoon of ground dried mint leaves, oh my my, it's just devine. 😋💚

    Love, love your channel. I miss it when you're not there. I had to wait until today to see you again...thank goodness it was LONG! I started watching you a bit ago, just happened upon you as I was getting kinda bored with my usual stable of allotment ppp. You, my dear, are anything but. I love your artistic flair and your whimsical nature...but most of all I love that LAUGH! And the voice you have when you talk to the 'Girlies' is enchanting. Most especially is the obvious close and loving relationship you and your Mum have....I envy you that. Your channel is just what we all need right now. I could rattle on but I wanted to know something. Your 'burn can' caught my attention (among other things). It's perfect! Did you make it? I want/need one. OK...done for now. Evening ladies hope your all doing well. Russell’s looks like our local garden centre full of plants, knickknacks, fountains, statues and clothes etc etc. You don’t find too many standard nurseries anywhere as economy has made them be more diversified sellers. But on a sunny day there’s no where better to visit. Everything looks fantastic and lush still though which is nice. End of summer tomorrow but sunny as all get out today. It is dispensed free at Menorcan festivals! Three of them and you're done!! Depends on the size of the receptical of course?

      @@JessieatPlot37 The syrup I make is half elderberry tea, quarter honey, quarter brandy. I put ginger in this batch too.

    You picked your elderberries too early. They should be black when they are ripe. Your flowers are beautiful!

      The second they were going black the birds eat them. Hence i picked them but they have ripened to black perfectly at home now.

    Hi Jessie, just one question: how does the bay tree handle your winters? I would love to have one, but I´m affraid, it will die during the winter. Do you know, how old and big bay tree should I leave outside during winter? Thank you :) Great video as ussual. Greetings from Czech Republic :)

    • @Albinojackrussel
      @Albinojackrussel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the UK our winters are much milder than in the Czech Republic because we're so costal. Our lowest temp ever was -27, you guys got to -36 last year. So Jessie's advice migt not apply to you sadly :(
      That said I know you can wrap plants in fiber or things like bubble wrap to help keep them warm in winter.

      The bays have no problem at all with our winters because we never get past -3 where i am. Looking it up they say they can handle down to -6 with no problem but not much colder than that.

    Hi Jessie, loving the Vlogs.
    I have a non allotment question…..would you mind telling me what gimbal you use ? I’m well impressed with the smoothness of your shooting. I’ve been filming some hiking/climbing in the Lake District with my Canon M50 camera but even with image stabilisation the shots are still quite shakey so I’m gonna treat myself to a gimbal. Thanks.

    • @JessieatPlot37
      @JessieatPlot37  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello!
      There is a link to my gimbal in the video blurb but i film everything just on my phone so i don't think it would be much use to you! And having a look at it..... nope, theres no way of adapting it for a proper camera. Its a Zhiyun Smooth and they do a camera ready one that looks really very similar, ( amzn.to/3zI5gNr )
      I've been really impressed with it. Great battery life. Only problem i've encountered is that i've been using it like a tripod too and when its out filming from a sunny spot it has over heated. But thats my fault really.

    Great video once again, could you find out the name of that beautiful dahlia please? It was stunning!! My leeks weren't good either, the same variety too, I thought the had white rot so I dug them out but no sign of it. Maybe it wasn't good seed last year.

    Jessie, the stems and green berries should not be used!!! They are poisonous. Only ripe berries should be used!!
