Tip, you can weigh down your cardboard with an old plastic gallon milk jug that has been cleaned and filled with water. Put a hole in it, and it will keep your cardboard moist.

We don't have big jugs of milk here, but I do have quite the collection of 1.5L PET bottles that just go in the recycling. I'll have to give that a shot as we have very strong wind here (and nowhere to get mulch so far)

Looking good! Envy your long season! Theoretically, I have 2 weeks until the first frost. Actually, it's going to be 26-30C for the next 2 weeks. Probably. Maybe in 10 days it might also crash to 10C. Who knows. I've started almost all the outdoor autumn crops already. I'm hedging my bets, have salads AND a last set of beans!😂😂
Last 3 years, actual frost turns up mid October. A couple of days, then usually gets a bit warmer for a few weeks. Kills the tomatoes etc and remindse me to plant garlic.

Thanks, Anne! This was a great video. One pedantic nitpick I want to make: around 13:30, you said that plants in the Brassica family aren't root crops. There are two reasons this isn't universal. The first is that there isn't a Brassica family! (Laugh.) There's a Brassiceae family and a Brassica genus, though. The second is that there *are* root crops in those places!
The Brassiceae plant family includes Brassica oleracea (kale, cabbage, broccoli, etc.), but it also includes root crops like radishes and maca.
Meanwhile, the Brassica plant genus, which is within the Brassiceae family, includes not only Brassica oleracea, but also Brassica rapa (broccoli raab, turnip, etc.) and Brassica napus (canola, rutabaga, etc.).
I know, I know, I'm being pedantic. But still -- if someone's growing turnips or rutabagas, which are in the Brassica genus, they may want to fertilize them in a way that's optimal for root crops, just like when they plant carrots. ;)

Hehe - LOVE your vids - and 'ethic' ;) Being a 'lazy' Gardener is the most natural way ... I watch our neighbour (new Mexico) weed whacking down to the earth, while I'm here watering ours & cut/dropping to create some soil ;)
Totally agree re chard - but our ducks/chickens like it and it grows through the winter sometimes here, so bonus ;) & didn't know re the garlic - explains A LOT lol - got 2nd year growing here... left them to do their thing though ;)
Very Grateful for your vids though.... 3rd year 'food forest'.... we got time ;)

Our climates are the opposite: here, in Northern Italy, it rains often in fall and spring and quite nothing in Summer and Winter (so no snow at all).

What is in your magical cool season seed baggie???
We’re in N. Mississippi, not too far from you. This made me want to frolic all through my garden tossing seeds like a sprite.
I’m sure as lazy gardeners we don’t thin them later right?

Awesome video as usual. Always encouraging me to color outside the lines which isn’t so easy for a born rule follower, lol. Did I miss your video of dilating soil to stop bad weeds?

Hi Anne. You mentioned storing seeds in the fridge, but also using the fridge to kickstart the germination process? How does it work between these two very different outcomes? I would love a video specifically on seed storage and management.

I feel exactly as you do about Swiss chard. It looks pretty, but I'd much rather plant a collard, mustard, turnip, beet, lettuce, or some other green.
