    OK- what size tires were on the 4Runner? What is the difference of wheelbases?

    • @drivingsports
      @drivingsports  2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      Tires were stock size: 265/70/R17s. The Ford has a 100.4 inch wheelbase. The Toyota has 109.8 inch wheelbase. It’s interesting to note that the four-door version of the bronco is 116.4 inch wheelbase. So neither is really a match to the 4Runner.

Only reason why people opt out of the kdss is when they want to do a long travel set up, the kdss cant support that. You can give the 4runner up to 3 in lift. With kdss 2.5 in the front and 1.0 in the rear, some people do have issue with what they call kdss lean when the system trys to compensate pressure from one side to the other because it thinks its higher or lower, I have not had that issue so it may be because it was i stalled incorrectly. It appears that the Ford's shorter wheelbase (normally an advantage) was a disadvantage on this particular obstacle. The Ford's right rear tire was in hole at the same time its front left tire was in a hole. By comparison, when the Toyota's front left tire fell into the hole, its right rear tire was still firmly planted -- allowing the rear tires to continue to propel the Toyota forward. By the time the Toyota's right rear tire fell into the hole, the front left tire was on solid ground -- allowing the front tires to pull the vehicle forward.
      My point is NOT that the Ford is a better off-roader than the Toyota. It's simply this test favored one vehicle over the other. A different obstacle may have given a different result.

    I went from a bullet proof 2009 Tundra 5.7L to a 2017 F-150 with an Ecoboost 2.7 V6. This is the same engine that comes in the Bronco. What a mistake! At 14,000 miles there was a huge cloud of blue smoke at startup so the driver side turbo had to be replaced. At 25,000 miles the front differential was making a bad noise that Ford refused to repair unless it completely failed. Black puffs of smoke after startup for a few minutes each morning after the new turbo. Never mind a few crazy electrical gremlins affecting the HVAC and infotainment system that Ford refused to address.
    Traded the Ford in for a 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road with KDSS and rear locker. 53,000 miles with no issues. We’ve done at least 3,000+ miles of off road driving and have the pinstripes and skid plate and rock slider dents to prove it.

To compare 4runner Crawl control which applies the brake to a spinning wheel so the non-spinning wheel gets the torque compared to the Bronco Trail control which is only cruise control at slow speed also one pedal control (otherwise no traction control) is very deceptive. I know he knew it because I just watched a video he made before this video where he reviewed the Bronco and described exactly what Trail Control did. Also notice when he was driving the Bronco saying it was struggling but trying hard to climb then he touched the brake (brake lights flashed) and then he said there it goes it working... BS. Off-road 101, you touch the brake when a wheel is spinning to cause the other wheel to pull it up. Then he says the 4runner Crawl control is superior to the Bronco Trail Control, more BS. To be a fair comparison he should compare 4runner Crawl Control with Bronco Rock Crawl which at the end he did turn on Rock Control and said that was everything the Bronco has to climb the hill... and look, it climbed right up. @@jamey48 I hear you...but Toyota has always kept it safe, and this is why they will always be top for reliability. I just got a 21 Tacoma and the 6 speed tranny is super old, but there's a reason they don't change it...It just works. This is why the Tundra engine didnt change for almost 2 decades and was still the top reliable truck. I we have to wait and see the reliability in the Bronco, but I'm going to put money on it that it will stink like other Ford vehicles. The big three will never be in the same league as Toyota, and it all starts at the plant...one plant encourages it's workers to shut the line down when there's a problem, while the other doesn't care and keeps pushing them out even though there are issues (worked at one of the big three plants)

But Falkin only makes stock size in SL (4 ply) or E1 (10 ply). Which ones did you get? Don't know that I really need 10 ply tire (heavy tire and stiff). But would like little tougher tire as well. I know I can get KO2 in stock size C (6 ply). I live in Utah and they do have lot rocky trails.

    My bronco is very quiet on the highway. Mine is a 23 outer banks, i test drove both the 4runner and bronco off road prior to buying. The 4 runner was a trd pro and a salesman at Toyota had it as his vehicle. He did make it clear, they werent available and i could only buy the trd off road. I had to be recovered 3 times, the bronco was a 22 black diamond and it went through everything very easily. The toyota salesman actually left me at the trail because he knew he wasnt going to get a sale after that showing. The toyota was very dated, had bad tires and was under powered.

And that ol' crawl control really rocks it's superiority when it's in sand too as I've seen on some channels here. Just the same, the Bronco is a cool rig for sure. We just dont know the reliability yet it's so new.

    Hmmm 2,7 liters V6 with 330 hp... I can already see that engine last forever.
    Now for comparison, my land cruiser 200 with V8 4,6 produces about 306 hp, and my diesel land cruiser Prado produces roughly 180 hp with 3.0 turbo diesel. There's a reason why Toyota deliberately decreases engine power... and that's why my lesser land cruiser (Prado) has 200k km on it at least, (In fact I'm not even sure what the real ODO reading is because I bought it with ODO reading decreased) and still runs like a charm. No hating on other cars, but where I live, I don't think I would own any other vehicle than Toyota, especially one with an outrageous price tag like Bronco :D

    @4:55 The TRD PRO wheels are 7" WIDE as opposed to the stock Off-Road wheels that are 7.5" WIDE. The WIDTH of the wheels has nothing to do with the clearance. Both wheels are 17" in diameter, the difference in clearance might come from the all-terrain tires with a higher profile (i.e. 285/70R17 vs 265/70R17).

BTW, had the A-Trac or CC been engaged during the tow comparison, the TRD would have walked right up that hill just like the Bronco did with its front lockers engaged. Neither could do it with out front wheels helping. So for all those forgetting that 1 fact, there you have it. Stump or no stump, the front wheel assistance would have towed that Bronco up just as easily. ;)
