fun fact: you can, in real life, call a parrot as a witness in court, and parrots have actually delivered testimonies that proved beyond reasonable doubt. one case was thought to be a break in and manslaughter, and an attempt on the victim's wife's life, and turned out to be a murder and attempted suicide committed by said wife, with the parrot testifying the last words of the victim, which revealed they were in a fight, and she shot him, before turning the gun on herself, and surviving the shot. this parrot proved not only who the one responsible was, but that the crime was an entirely different one. it wasnt a break in, manslaughter, and attempted manslaughter. it was a murder and attempted suicide.
Two interesting details: 1) When he is shown nervous in the trial, he grabs the shoulder where the bullet is located, as a form of foreshadowing. 2) In the next game, it is stated he died in prison, less than a year later. Most likely suicide, although it is funny to think he met some of the innocent people he send there in arranged trials.
I think in some of the later games he's implied to still be alive, albiet not directly stated. I think Capcom isn't entirely sure what's up with him either
Sorry not 'games'. It was the Ace Attorney anime adaptation, where it's implies that he is still alive and imprisoned at the end of the episode Reunion and Turnabout 1st Trial.
@@rawmaw It was a long time since I played it but I remember in the second game is mentioned he is dead, but the details are vague. Also, a Japan-only guide stated he was given the death penalty. So yeah, unless Capcom pulls a retcon we are not gonna see more of Manfred ever again. As for the hints of him being alive, I think you may be confusing him with his daughter Franziska von Karma, since they have the same surname.
I read a fantastic fan written piece about Gregory's spirit going to speak with him on the operating table (to remove the bullet from his shoulder), and how MVK died of fright upon seeing the man he killed. It's my headcanon since it would fit roughly in line with the "he died in prison" answer.
Fantastic analysis! von Karma is absolutely one those characters you just love to hate. 1-4 was such an incredible case and a lot of that hinged on his character and the lengths he went to to exact revenge on the Edgeworths. He’s such a horrible man, but a fascinating character and great villain.
Good video. As one of the few Manfred fans out there i'd like to add There are many scenes in the anime where new sides of his character get shown that contradict popular assumptions about him e.g. him wrapping a scarf around Miles when he fetched him, taking in the stray pomeranian, him taking Franziska and Miles out to the mall for pancakes and whatnot. It even illustrates that Miles' adoption was not fully out of revenge but that he saw potential and an actual lost son and a playmate for his daughter in him. In the Miles investigation games he mentions a wife while later in the timeline there is no evidence of her being around - scenes in the anime show the table being set for only the kids and him as well. The likeliness he eventually was a single father is high. The anime was the first to show some private workings and i would love if there is a game centered around Franziska to further illustrate it. I wonder and theorize about what caused him to become so obsessed with perfection and needing to live up to a families creed. Nothing excuses the suffering he put onto others still. A sadly very flat / clearly fully evil charactization he got that makes sense and is key to his role, effect and appeal but it'd be interesting to see behind the curtain.
Great analysis! I also found his fatherly side of him to be an interesting comparison to his perfectionist, ruthless prosecutor side. It really helps round his character, in my opinion.
I'm just going to point out that those episodes were filler and are never mentioned in the games, so I would take those scenes with a grain of salt. Plus the anime changes a lot, to the point of context getting cut or outright changing how certain events play out
The hitman from the second game? He did a fine job, was never caught and the only reason there was a happy ending was because the culprit tried to blackmail him too.
Prosecutor strategies of all known prosecutors: Winston: Tries to get the judge to follow his drift from the start, but has no other tactic otherwise Miles: Strong ability to connect the dots in ways people may not be able to and is often well informed about the case, relies on strong foundations in arguments, is well prepared in case things don't go as planned but may be vulnerable when his base is rebutted and backup plans countered Manfred: Extreme aggression and intimidation, not letting the defense learn enough information to properly defend the defendant Franziska: Combination of Miles' and Manfred's tactics of aggression and strong case foundations with backup plans if needed, much like Miles, combined with attempts to rush the case to the verdict as fast as possible like Manfred. Combined, it gives Franziska a sort of blitzkrieg strategy Diego (Godot): The best prosecutor in the trilogy. Relies on nothing but sheer improvisation and wit much like Phoenix does, albeit actually better than Phoenix is. Objections are actually intelligent and not just to deny the defense information
Great coverage. Manfred is one of my favorite villains of all time as well!!! I like him more than Dahlia honestly. Also keep up with this series - As I am a fellow villain lover. >:)
Fun Fact: Manfred von Karma died from unknown causes not too long after that trial. Since he committed murder after getting penalised... i think we might know how he died...
He's the most evil villain hands down- just think he killed gregory in front of his own son- took his son under his wing then raised him and trained him in his illegal prosecution ways building up his career just to destroy it by framing him for murder all to get back at his father for ruining his perfect track record- like he's fucking ruthless.
I could say Dahilia is more evil but honestly; both are very vile humans on an equally different ends of the spectrum While Manfred has worked up a winning streak for 40 years and uphold a perfect image... Making him grandiose. Dahlia has done diabolical stuff that I consider her rather like a demoness yet she always fails on her crimes, and even as she struggled beyond the grave she manage to fail at the end.
He murdered Gregory over just a stain on his track record, but he framed Miles over a bullet wound. There was a bit more to take revenge for than just the penalty, at least
I haven’t heard a single person talking about the fact von Karma simply accepted (maybe even planned) to lose the first case in case 4, the one blaming Edgeworth. Even though he had another plan to actually convict Edgeworth his win record would still be incomplete. Or am I missing something?
It probably was the fact that the murder in this case was no murder or any wrongdoing on the accused by any legal means so it probably be counted as void. (You can't legally charge him for any crime so it's not his fault) the 2nd crime on the other hand the accused already confessed so it could be a GUARANTEED slam dunk if it was for anyone other then Phoenix Wright.
If he shot Gregory Edgeworth over a penalty, imagine what might have happened to Phoenix, if he didn't take down von Karma in court right there and then
So von karma can be accused of obstruction of justice, murder, assault (As well as attempted assault), AND HAVING THE MOST FREAKY OBJECTION SOUND EVER LIKE SERIOUSLY DUDE CHILL
Objection: then his father would have had to been a prosecutor and would have wanted to be a prosecutor. Also then the school thing wouldnt have made sense.
