In AA Justice for All, he gets knocked out by Pearl, but in AA Apollo Justice, he can survive getting hit by a car and being flung 30 feet up in the air and only getting a small bruise ON THE KNEE. Honestly, phoenix’s durability isn’t consistent at all.

Engaard in the anime was not nearly as evil as the game. His character was revealed too early and the reveal was underwhelming. Plus, no evil choccy milk shaking.

Unlike the canon version in which Celeste was just another pawn in the Engarde/Corrida rivalry, Corrida in the stage play turns out to have genuinely loved Celeste from the get-go all the way up to the very end, and the alleged suicide note inside the teddy bear puzzle instead turned out to be a statement Corrida had intended to use to publicly restore Celeste's good name and clear her of all of the false smears Engarde had spread about her.
His voice actor did an awesome job portraying the scumbag of an action star who has no loyalties to anyone but himself and is willing to have someone murdered to keep his public reputation intact. When I played that last case of the second game of the trilogy, it showed what it really means to be a defense lawyer and to find the truth when working with the prosecution.
I feel like lawyers in this show would have a much easier time in court if they kept voice recorders on them at all times. Redd White's case certainly would've been quicker.

@@slightlyplant In the USA it is a grey area. It needs to be consented up to a point. If they do something horrible and illegal they can submit it as evidence without their permission unless it is of a powerful person doing something wrong.

Have to admit the English dub delivered the big reveal way better. The Japanese version almost sounds like he didn't have enough time to get the words out cause it was animated too fast, here it sounds a little more natural
Okay but his va KILLED IT dude, I don't think the laugh at 5:38 was supposed to be that maniacal considering the animation, but he went all out (Though, with this anime the animation isn't much to go off of)
The game also, at the same time, demonstrated that the psyche locks aren't great for judging someone's character, either. That was the first time Phoenix used the Kurain charm to test his client, and it ended up being wrong. So now he has no reason to trust it going forward, unless he's dealing with an obvious liar.
Okay, hear me out: Engarde is just the Ace Attorney equivalent to Vinegar Doppio. A cute, friendly young dude who you can’t help but love, who pulls out his phone and reveals his second, evil identity? The similarities are right there, and it also explains why he’s one of my faves.
Very similar but just gotta point out the differences: Matt Engarde was only hiding his true identity, presenting outwardly a charming man that's "as refreshing as the spring breeze"; meanwhile Doppio is a complete person who's unaware of the other one

That one glance from Phoenix says it all: feels disgusted and reluctant by the fact that he has to defend a guilty man, but finds the determination to go through with it anyway. Sometimes there are these little moments here and there that you can appreciate from this anime adaptation.

The part of the anime that did better than the games is, you get to see Engarde deflate as the lawyers talk with De Killer. Him going from absolute cockiness to pissing his pants in absolute fear is priceless.
2:14 the anime fleshed this out a little too much, I think. Matt’s statements about how this is “breaking his heart”, calling Juan his “friend”, and his crocodile tears should be triggering the Magatama

TBH I *kinda* feel like they ruined his reveal in the anime. They shouldn't have changed the lines as much. I dunno about it in comparison to the original Japanese text, but the original English translation was him saying "Hang on, I need to consult _myself"_ then after a quick "phonecall", he says "I think it's about time ... to meet _him_ now, Mr. Lawyer dude." As opposed to him simply saying "this is the real me!!!" like most other Ace Attorney villains. This was straight up *genius* IMO, because it explains a massive amount about his behaviour in general, especially the phonecall gimmick. His first encounter with Phoenix was foreshadowing this reveal thanks to the suggestion that "scarred Engarde" is Matt's "agent" and he switches between the two personas whenever the need arises, with his time "on the phone" being the only time he actually collects his thoughts. That whole implication is mostly lost in the anime adaptation. _Most importantly,_ it hammers home the whole case's theme of both him and Juan Corrida being the worst kind of scum show business has to offer, psychopaths who view everything, even their own egos, as tools to be manipulated. The specific way he parses out his identities demonstrates how his whole life has been one long instance of method acting. Changing it, even though it's only like two sentences, damages a portion of Engarde's character and why he's such a memorable villain, IMO. Don't get me wrong, the voiceacting and animation are top notch, but I think someone writing the _script_ should've played it a little closer to the originals.

I actually think the anime reveal works fine in a different way. Sure, the whole thing about “consulting himself” does do a good job of showing that he’s so dedicated to staying in character that he treats his facade and real self as separate entities, but the anime still does this in a different manner. Instead of showing him voluntarily dropping the act, it shows him uncontrollably breaking character as an actor. What’s a thing that causes actors to break character? _Laughter._ Sure, you might think “oh, he’s less talented because he can’t stay in character as casually as in the games,” but I think it just goes to show how much of a psychopath he is. He breaks character because he’s so sick-minded that he finds the situation funny. Even if you don’t buy into everything I’ve said up until now, I still think the way Engarde gains Phoenix’s trust more than makes up for it. Without the anime featuring psyche locks, he instead gives his whole speech that would make anyone sympathize with him. You’d think he was being genuine until you realize in hindsight, holy shit this guy is a _professional actor._ He even cries on command!

I am shocked how people can think him not heinous enough for the Complete Monster trope when he punches outside his weight class with uniquely awful crimes as far as the franchise goes.
It's strange. Things like the first meeting with Matt are great and expressive, but other parts are...well... Maybe it's the English voice acting that makes it flow better? I remember seeing the Japanese version and it just....went by so quick.
this anime is animated as if they had to hire a bunch of amateur cosplayers last minute, but they couldn't all stay for the entire filming and that's why everyone's faces and hair change shapes just about every other scene
@Jack_Horner_is_a_hero I've played up to SOJ, but not the Great AA games yet. 2 is good, I like 3 a bit more, but Matt is still the best villian imo. It was just a nice twist on the usual expectations.
I like the way his voice changed from being optimistic and acting cool when first met. To being snarky and confident when revealed, to being downright terrified when he finds out his hired assasin is going to kill him.

Ooh, I do not like that Wright gets Engarde to accept his employment by namedropping deKiller in this script. That's a massive red flag, Matt may as well have dropped the pretense then and there. But somehow Phoenix still seems to think he's innocent. In the game, Matt keeps the facade going until later, when Phoenix accuses him directly.
yeah, i think deKillers name wasn't said in the game untill late and "as far as i remember" only us (phoenix,pearls, mia) and gumshoe known the whole kidnapping thing untill very very late even the butler never revealed him self or gone public even in court

I think they just severely dumbed down the hinted attraction from Adrian Andrews towards Celeste in the games

The English dub in general really elevates the anime. The dub team clearly got what makes AA as a series special.

Awesome case, it is very fitting for a final case. High stakes, big twist, challenges Phoenix's belief, and most importantly awesome villain
The part of the anime that did better than the games is, you get to see Engarde deflate as the lawyers talk with De Killer. Him going from absolute cockiness to pissing his pants in absolute fear is priceless.

2:14 the anime fleshed this out a little too much, I think. Matt’s statements about how this is “breaking his heart”, calling Juan his “friend”, and his crocodile tears should be triggering the Magatama

TBH I *kinda* feel like they ruined his reveal in the anime. They shouldn't have changed the lines as much.
I dunno about it in comparison to the original Japanese text, but the original English translation was him saying "Hang on, I need to consult _myself"_ then after a quick "phonecall", he says "I think it's about time ... to meet _him_ now, Mr. Lawyer dude." As opposed to him simply saying "this is the real me!!!" like most other Ace Attorney villains.
This was straight up *genius* IMO, because it explains a massive amount about his behaviour in general, especially the phonecall gimmick. His first encounter with Phoenix was foreshadowing this reveal thanks to the suggestion that "scarred Engarde" is Matt's "agent" and he switches between the two personas whenever the need arises, with his time "on the phone" being the only time he actually collects his thoughts. That whole implication is mostly lost in the anime adaptation.
_Most importantly,_ it hammers home the whole case's theme of both him and Juan Corrida being the worst kind of scum show business has to offer, psychopaths who view everything, even their own egos, as tools to be manipulated. The specific way he parses out his identities demonstrates how his whole life has been one long instance of method acting.
Changing it, even though it's only like two sentences, damages a portion of Engarde's character and why he's such a memorable villain, IMO. Don't get me wrong, the voiceacting and animation are top notch, but I think someone writing the _script_ should've played it a little closer to the originals.
"the worst kind of scum show business has to offer" What about Roger Rottenz? He turned his own loyal fan into a throwaway tool for some UGLY revenge effort, as well as whipping up a violent mob against a respectable law firm.
I actually think the anime reveal works fine in a different way. Sure, the whole thing about “consulting himself” does do a good job of showing that he’s so dedicated to staying in character that he treats his facade and real self as separate entities, but the anime still does this in a different manner. Instead of showing him voluntarily dropping the act, it shows him uncontrollably breaking character as an actor. What’s a thing that causes actors to break character? _Laughter._
Sure, you might think “oh, he’s less talented because he can’t stay in character as casually as in the games,” but I think it just goes to show how much of a psychopath he is. He breaks character because he’s so sick-minded that he finds the situation funny.
Even if you don’t buy into everything I’ve said up until now, I still think the way Engarde gains Phoenix’s trust more than makes up for it. Without the anime featuring psyche locks, he instead gives his whole speech that would make anyone sympathize with him. You’d think he was being genuine until you realize in hindsight, holy shit this guy is a _professional actor._ He even cries on command!

It's strange. Things like the first meeting with Matt are great and expressive, but other parts are...well... Maybe it's the English voice acting that makes it flow better? I remember seeing the Japanese version and it just....went by so quick.
this anime is animated as if they had to hire a bunch of amateur cosplayers last minute, but they couldn't all stay for the entire filming and that's why everyone's faces and hair change shapes just about every other scene
I think they chose to animate it that way for a combination of lack of budget, and also a nod to the ace attorney animation style

Ooh, I do not like that Wright gets Engarde to accept his employment by namedropping deKiller in this script. That's a massive red flag, Matt may as well have dropped the pretense then and there. But somehow Phoenix still seems to think he's innocent. In the game, Matt keeps the facade going until later, when Phoenix accuses him directly.
