the fact phoenix had a flashback as soon as he heard gumshoe say von karma in the second game means that he really was a big deal instead of a generic evil prosecutor
When you think about Manfred von Karma is the reason this franchise exists. If he didn't kill Gregory Edgeworth he wouldn't have adopted Edgeworth, Misty wouldn't have left so Mia wouldn't become a defense attorney so she never would have met Phoenix or Godot. And Dahlia's father wouldn't have left. All it took was one murder to create an entire franchise.
I think Dahlia's father would leave anyway. He left because Morgan was not powerful enough to become the master of Kurain, and he only married her for power, so it's unrelated to DL-6.
Kristoph still seems more threatening for me. He isn't aggressive in court, and they rarely pay nearly as mich lip service to how intimidating he is as for Von Karma. Phoenix literally had to forge evidence and change the legal system to get Kristoph found guilty.
Even when the metal detector goes off, von Karma still tries to get out of it and says "I got shot in an unrelated incident", to which Phoenix says "Well remember you mentioned the study of ballistics at the beginning of the trial? We can confirm it's from the same weapon used that day"
Nailing him with his own knowledge And then there's the touching goodbye scene with Maya. Without her, we couldn't have won. (And the anime goes and ruins that to give us a spy short that fails to be a spy short with Maya sneaking into Manfred's office and Phoenix not realizing he's missing evidence the moment he picks up the box that used to contain the evidence)
The thing is, in reality he could of said the bullet can not be removed as it risks his death, as keeping a bullet in you means the flesh, etc grows around it.
Damon Gant is still the most terryfing character to me mainly because if how he acts but Manfred von Karma is close second because he managed to captire that essence of true evil villain
i think my favorite part about Von Karma is that when you combine his main appearance with his Investigation spin off appearances he becomes a real three dimensional character, also in an odd way you can say that he's funnily enough higher up on the moral high ground compared to other villains due to that it seems like he honestly loves his real family, also his crime being one of passion instead of planned out is something that isn't done very often in the series, he truly is one of the most unique antagonists in the series.
When threw out the entire game and even future games you are so use to being able to press witness or ask seemingly irrelevant questions the opposing prosecutor rarely does anything but van karma stops you in your tracks he plays in a way not to give phonixe any chance of getting new info threw bluffing or just talking witch he used the intire game to solve cases its terrifying, i remember watching a leagle student play the first ace attorney game and when phoenix said something the guy was like "he can object to that" then immediately vonkarma objected , just showing further how his experience and skill is above all other prossuctes in the serious despite only being around for 1 case
It might not allign with the spirit of the game series, but a game where you play as a corrupt attorney that forges evidence, intimidate people, and do anything it takes to win like von Karma would be interesting
Manfred honestly isn't much of a character as much as the series' archetypical big boss. He's not meant to be particularly deep or complex, but he takes everything that's been used against you up to this point and takes it to its furthest conclusion, whether that be courtroom intimidation, manipulating testimony, or stealing evidence.
Von Karma gets major bonus points for being the first insanely tough prosecutor. Later villains may have similar power, but the jump in power compared to the previous toughest villain isn’t as massive as this first time, even with Edgeworth’s intimidation.
The game up to this case for me was a continuous “Shut up, Edgeworth” and this case just made me go “F*CK YOU, VON KARMA!!” and that’s what made it so good for me!
To be honest, I really like the final villain of the TGAA duology, and they also get the same feeling on me because... (SPOILERS, READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION) . . . . . . . . In the last trial, when he acts as the judge and tries to manipulate everything, even convincing everyone in the judiciary to stand by his side, I really got to feel like I'd never bring justice to him! It took a nearly Deus EX moment by the main man Herlock invoking the f*cking Queen to be able to turn the tides!
Spoiler warning for both Ace Attorney Investigations and The Great Ace Attorney 2, you have been warned: Manfred being Phoenix's toughest boss I think's fair but the toughest ace attorney villain overall? I have to disagree on that, Manfred seems to only do well when the case is going how he plans it to but when something goes against his plan (whether it's luck or not) he struggles to pull it back however a villain like Quercus Alba for example was only beaten because of a set of extremely specific circumstances which I feel makes him a much tougher villain, unlike Manfred where you get lucky but could seemingly win with less luck if Phoenix was more skilled, it didn't matter how skilled anyone was going against Quercus Alba his plan was too good and only lost because of extrememly specific cirmustances at a extrememly specific time and he also does a good job at thinking on the fly unlike Von Karma. That's only one example, Mael Stronghart almost won despite everything, only losing because the Queen happened to disagree with him, had Herlock not been able to show the trial to the queen or had the queen agreed with Stronghart, he'd have won, regardless of how skilled any of the attorneys in that trial were. Yeah Manfred might've been the toughest villain for Phoenix Wright but I really disagree with him being the toughest Ace Attorney villain overall.
Throughout that whole trial, it felt like battling imperfection itself, only truly being able to make progress Von karma through seemingly stupid plans and sheer luck, ultimately defeating him with the accumulation of such, plus he brought a taser and zapped maya, unforgivable, truly one of ace attorney’s best villains
Manfred holding the court hostage is really cool thou one thing that always annoyed me is that he just rules the court because. He is powerful thou I kinda wish they elaborated. Thou his control over Miles while growing up has some terrifying implications. Also him just up and attacking Phoenix and Maya is such a great scene. I do kinda hope the bring him back in the final game in a clever way like maybe as a victim in a case having the client be one of the people falsely convicted.
this is the case phoenix got his bluffing infamy. It's so funny he completely desperate spewing nonsense with a sheepish grin, the judge knows he is completely desperate but he still can't deny the possibility exists.
A close second for me would be Damon Gant. He gave me a weird vibe, and the person I watched for this case gave him a voice that was nice, intimidating, and had a hint of something (maybe fake kindness/passive aggressiveness, but I don’t think this was the intended interpretation) that made him seem a little suspicious for me. I didn’t own the game, and their playthrough was the first time I’ve seen the case. My suspicion of him from his very first appearance made him even more intimidating than just knowing his rank and authority alone. I’d have to rewatch the case, but I think he was also a very competent witness to go along with his authority and experience. I didn’t finish TGAA2, but the final antagonist was even more obvious when I saw them. Maybe they could be the toughest, but I wouldn’t know yet. Their design screams villain to me. Maybe my sus detector for game characters is pretty good after playing a lot of games lol. I also have to say that I rewatched the DL-6 retrial case, and some of Von Karma’s dialogue and actions are hilarious in an absurd way to me. He sarcastically brings up the parrot, and Phoenix actually goes through with interrogating it. Von Karma prepped the parrot beforehand knowing what Phoenix is like, and it’s just one hilarious moment from that case for me.
Well, I've been trying to avoid so many Spirit of Justice spoilers so I don't get the finale ruined like it was for me in DD, T&T, and Investigations 2. Unfortunately I got spoiled here... in a video made by a guy who only talks about the trilogy... damn.

Spoilers for SOJ and GAAC One thing i really love about Manfred is the fact that, while yes, he is incredibly powerful and practically controls the courtroom, the fact is there is one person who is more powerful than him, the judge. Manfred can’t just pronounce the defendant guilty immediately, at the very least he has to have a case. That was one of the reasons why i disliked the queen in Spirit of Justice, she was honestly too powerful for my tastes. The is genuinely nothing stopping her from pronouncing Dhurke guilty and finishing the case immediately. She doesn’t even have a conscience, it kind of sour the final case a bit because I felt helpless and the only reason why I was able to win was because of plot, not character. Mael stronghart is better done in my opinion because he actually cares about justice, and once again, there is someone above him, this case being the queen. While Manfred is incredibly powerful, I feel the reason why he was a good villain also comes down the the fact that there were parts of the legal system he couldn’t control, letting you have a fighting chance, no matter how slim.
But the Khura'inese system does allow you to fight against Ga'ran. Apollo just needed to piece everything together to pinpoint the necessary loophole and then seize the opportunity. Which he did.
I touch on this slightly. Feels like they sort of artificially raised the stakes to make it feel tougher by making you go up against a literal dictator.
