Dr. Sam Muslin's Video Notes: "This patient thought getting his under bite corrected in two weeks was too good to be true. After wearing braces, getting four teeth extracted and now faced with jaw surgery and years of braces he found out how the "new age of dentistry" changes lives without grinding down healthy teeth, without pain, surgery or braces. Notice: You can't do this with porcelain veneers."
    A Review Of Underbite Surgery
Within the medical community, surgery is typically reserved as a last resort. Being expensive, being invasive, and requiring the expertise of a professional requires a great deal of planning. If easier options are available, they will be attempted first. There are however some conditions that cannot be easily addressed any other way. When it comes to crowded teeth, overbites, and underbites, there are rarely other options, especially if you are an adult. So, what is underbite surgery like and what are some things you should consider prior to operation day? Lets review those topics as well as briefly discuss what an underbite is for those who may not be familiar.
Surgical Options For Tooth Based Underbites
Underbites caused by crowding or improper placement of teeth in the mouth are a particular kind of underbite that has its own treatment option. More often then not, tooth-based underbites can be cured through the removal of the troubled teeth. When the teeth are removed, the mouth should be able to open and close without a problem, removing the underbite. If handled quickly enough, no major deformity may have occurred. It may be necessary for an individual to wear braces either before or after the procedure.
Surgical Options For Bone-Based Underbites In Children
Underbites caused by bone structure, growth, and placement all change throughout childhood before eventually settling in adulthood. As a result, the treatment options available to children are greater than those available to adults. As stated at the beginning of this article, surgery is usually considered the last option after everything else has been exhausted. With children, there are two options available prior to surgical intervention. These are the upper jaw expander and the reverse-pull facemask.
The upper jaw expander consists of a metal plate that is inserted into the roof of a child’s mouth. Every night, the metal plate is expanded just a little using a key. The end result is that the upper jaw is slowly extended to meet the lower jaw, causing the mouth and face to even out as a result. Typically, it will take around a year before the upper jaw expander can be removed.
The reverse-pull facemask is another popular option where bands extend from the upper mouth and around the head. This causes a pulling motion forwards that helps to bring the upper jaw in line with the lower jaw. When a reverse-pull facemask is used, a chin cap is sometimes used as well to help make the entire apparatus stable. While intrusive, after about a year the underbite will be cured and future work will most likely not be needed.
Surgery is typically only used in extreme cases where medical problems could result or the two methods listed above do not work. Surgery for correcting an underbite in children is similar to that of adults and hence will be further discussed there.
    Surgical Options For Adults
It is true that you can correct an underbite at any age. After puberty, however, surgery will typically be required and in a few cases, it may even be recommended for children. In either case, the surgery is either done to move the lower jaw back or the upper jaw more forward depending on the shape of your head. After surgery and recuperation, braces may be necessary.
Surgery for correcting an underbite is done in a hospital setting and usually involves using anesthesia. It will require several appointments beforehand and can even involve an overnight stay for observation to be sure that everything went well. Whether or not an underbite will be covered by your insurance will depend on who your provider is and what their range of dental coverage includes.
Underbite surgery is an option available to all those who have an underbite caused by bone and facial structure and who have the money to pay for it. If you do not want to live with your underbite and you are an adult, then your only course of action will be to get surgery. While the process is intensive, it may result in changing the shape of your face and providing you a life without the difficulty and stigma that would be there otherwise.
