    Clive, you are, without a doubt, the most experienced and giving artist I have ever seen on TH-cam. Thank you so much for your incredible shares as to materials, techniques and styles! You do simply mention your personal products that are available...and then go on to tell us what cheaper products that can be used if we want...always detailing the problems that may be encountered by using the lesser products, but never sounding like we would be foolish to choose the lesser alternative. You are an invaluable teacher! Thank you!

    Thanks for all your great videos Clive, awesome tips to save money. I have experimented with various materials for making my own canvas boards. I found that sheets of grey mounting board work very well. Cut the mounting board to size. You canmpurchase at Fabric Stores, inexpensive unbleached calico, possibly artist's calico or even curtain lining. For very fine grain, inexpensive white bedsheets. Lay fabric on a large table. Measure a border of 1 1/2" along top edge of fabric and mark with pencil. Measure the same along left edge of fabric, line with pencil. I apply pva glue (Alcolin or Ponal wood glue to the board after cutting it to size and lay it on top of the fabric along marked lines. Press down well for adhesion. Take rule and measure 1 1/2" on right side and lower edge of board, cut carefully along lines, paint glue on edges of fabric and fold over to the back of board (folding and gluing corners neatly. This ensures that the edges are the same width. Prime board with gesso, and paint away! These boards fit into frames perfectly if you cut them according to standard picture frame sizes and I haven't had any warping at all. Even if one uses these boards for practicing, they're great. It sounds complicated to make but after you've made or two you will see how easy it is and will save a lot of money. One sheet of the grey mounting board should give quite a few A4 size but I like A3 size for larger paintings. Good luck and happy painting!

    Your advice is invaluable. Thanks, Clive. I would like to add a tip of my own here: put the board with the glued-on canvas face down on the table and trim the canvas by cutting along the edge of the board, using it like a ruler. You got to have a sure hand, of course, and take care not to cut into the board

    the best part of all of your videos is that you encourage people/new artists to try new ideas and practice art which is uncommon .. Mostly criticism on artwork on new artist comes from inner circles and art fraternity itself. Cheers

      Your approach canvas mounting could be improved if u painted canvas and board let dry and iron on .This. Will stop whorpe and the canvas can be folded around sides instead of trimming and will insure to eliminating any non stick areas

    Religious icons are traditionally made with linden wood and linen. I think they used rabbit glue. Of course purists only use egg tempura paints. I use acrylics. If medieval iconographers had acrylics, they would have used them. I'm thinking linen on wood panels from the craft store would be perfect.
    I also use 6-ply mat board. I picked up a couple of large pieces cheap at a fabric and crafts store. After watching this, I'm going to cover them with fabric. This is such an excellent idea. Tip -- cut the boards to standard picture frame sizes. Then you can put them in frames from charity or thrift shops. If your boards are odd sizes, you can't find frames that fit them.
    Thanks. You never cease to amaze and inspire, Clive. God bless!

    Love your ideas and your teaching style. Thank you for all the time & effort you have put into your videos. Much like others I am on a very limited budget so I've been using cardboard and the warping was getting out of control so I took one of your suggestions for prepping a canvas and used it on the cardboard with amazing results. I used mod podge (because it is the sealer I have) and I coated both sides of the cardboard with it. The result was amazing! I have no warping and a slightly rough surface to add my gesso to. THANK YOU so much for helping me paint on a slim budget. Also, a nice, cheap student acrylic is crayola (not sure if it's available everywhere).

    Brilliant Clive. I've thought of this before & said, nah, must be very difficult. I love your watercolor idea as well and am excited to see what you do with it. I'm just now trying to learn WC, and quite frankly, find it such a challenge from acrylic. Hi Clive, Thank you so much for this video! I live here in the US. And I am wondering if I could use an acrylic gel medium for an adhesive to adhere canvas or linens to boards or cardboard? If not what kind of adhesive could I get here in the US to do that if you would know? Thank you so very much sir! have a great day!

    When using linen, denim or any cotton fabric, do I apply a sealer, glue, pva or gesso on top of the fabric before I paint??? What should I do??? Also, is it possible to make a canvas with any color fabric or should I just use white???

  • @ianshutes3317
    @ianshutes3317 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very thorough, clear description as usual Clive. Is there any long-term problem with the edges? Have you tried folding and glueing the canvas at the edges? I suppose that as long as the panel is going in a frame it doesn't matter.
    Keep up the good work.

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s quite stable but as you said if it goes in a frame it’s fine

    • @ianshutes3317
      @ianshutes3317 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A point worth mentioning Clive is when using plywood or thin MDF, you should treat the back the same as the front. In other words, once the canvas is dry, coat the back with whatever adhesive you've used on the front. This will stop the bowing which will occur with a one-side coated panel as atmospheric conditions vary.
      Another tip is to make your panels to fit IKEA frames, they are good quality as well as being cheap and available online (An important consideration when you live in rural Wales!)

    You can actually get very cheap canvas online. Just look for the quality you want and "cheap'. You'll find some very ugly printed cloth that nobody wants.... But as you are going to gesso it anyway, who cares? Just stay away from very contrasting prints. They may keep throwing shades.
