This is why your canvas panels are warping!

  • Nothing can be as devastating as waking up the morning after doing your acrylic pour only to find your canvas panel is bending as it dries. The paint pools and ruins that amazing pour you did the day before.
    Canvas panels warping is pretty common, especially with cheaper canvas panels that are made out of cardboard instead of something more durable like hardboard.
    I take you through why canvas panels warp and a few things you can do to prevent this from happening in the future.

    Hi David. Thank you for this experiment! When I first started out I didn’t know that canvas panels might not be a good option. But I think I did use artist loft and it was kind of a crapshoot. sometimes they would bow and sometimes not. But I quickly moved on to stretch canvases because even though those are more expensive you’re wasting paint or I was wasting paint (& time) by using the canvas panels and just hoping that it would work out. In any regard you are my favorite teacher on the tube! A lot of the other artists, 90% of their videos are simply showing them doing a pour. They typically don’t explain the mechanics of it or even go farther and do experiments like this!

    I saw somewhere on TH-cam to paint an ‘X’, from corner to corner on the back with Gesso. My lines are about 1 - 1 1/2 inch wide. It has worked for me. I experiment on canvas panels before doing a pour on a stretched canvas. I have bought my panels at Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Hobby Lobby and Ocean State Job Lot.

    You are amazing. You’re an artist and like an art-tech guy at the same time lol always diggin in the weeds and researching topics and issues most people face a lot or have a least come across once or twice before. I did a pour on a panel once but I tilted it to where the layer was super thin, like taking forever to cover, and done on a more quality canvas so I didn’t have any issues, however this was good to know so I don’t forget that all panels are not created equal, just like everything else. I will definitely reference this video on my channel when I do another pour. You rock!

    It could also be that the canvas has a different gesso on them in combo with the sturdier inside. So better gesso the less water can get through the canvas.

    Great Video. I just found your videos as I started to search how to videos on acrylic pouring. Your video for beginners was excellent. You gave us everything we needed to do our first pour. I became a caregiver to my 88yr old mother whom is suffering from Alzheimers. We have tried acrylic painting videos but she gets tired and bored of following instructions then just paints whatever which is fine, however she wants me to just copy her. I love my mother dearly so I thought maybe pouring would be easier for her. Your videos show us why we should do things a certain way by showing live videos after explaining the techniques you demo by doing a pour. Thank you for showing us what you have learned in trial and error so that we can have successful pours with our first one. 😊

    THANK YOU, for doing this video! Small sizes naturally don't warp as bad, less area. (I THINK). I made coasters out of square, cheap panels. (5by5) I was able to resin them. The larger the panel cheap or not, I have bowed canvases. They do absorb too much h2o. You CAN paint traditional acrylic/oil paint on any of the flat canvas panels without bowing of any kind. Just don't prop them up against a wall for too long, before you frame them, you get a bow then if you are not careful. Make sure the panel is supported, as well. The paint will also stick to itself if you stack them one on top of the other without a nonstick surface in between each one. Thank you

    This is an excellent subject to cover and you're just so thorough. When I was just doing regular acrylic painting I always used canvas boards from Michael's because I could easily fit them into a regular frame. Here's why I especially love this content: when I first started pouring, I fell into the hobby lobby trap. I bought a bunch of the canvases supposedly made just for pouring. It didn't occur to me that they'd sell something so counter intuitive and disastrously useless. The canvas is supported with cheap cardboard! The second that gets wet it buckles and your pour is ruined. I was horrifed, even moreso when I tried to return $60 worth of them explaining to the manager what was wrong with them and she refused. FYI their canvas panels are the same cheap quality. I lost my receipt but I shopped there all the time so I asked for a store credit. Again she refused! I'm stuck with them and trying to figure out how to salvage them. Sorry this is such a long comment but I think its important for people to know about this stuff, yanno, what does and doesn't work. So I'm in the midst of experimenting, basically completely ruining these canvases one by one. Right now I'm waiting for a 2nd coat of spray varnish to dry on 2 if them then ill pour over it to see if the cardboard holds up. Ill let you and your viewers know! Thank you for being so generous and sharing all these great experiments. You are indeed the best content on TH-cam for pouring!!

    Hi, thank you for posting this video. Sadly, it's a few months late for me to have avoided the horrible bending that I had. I do have a tip: One additional step, after covering the canvas with some type of sealant, is to use painter's tape on the back of the canvas. I found that when I made a few tape loops and added them to the back of my canvas that it really curbed the bowing. Mainly because it gave some resistance to the pull of the paint going into the cardboard fibers. I suggest painters tape or frog tape because it doesn't harm the canvas or the thin paper on the backer. I really appreciate your channel as it was the one that inspired me to start doing my own pouring art. Thank you and keep up the creative curiosity!

    I don't do acrylic pouring but this advice you give is appropriate to all painters using canvas boards. As I have an assortment of weird and wonderful frames collected from charity shops etc over years I have been making my own panels from hardboard.
    After experimenting in a less scientific way than you I settled upon two coats both sides and edges of the hardboard with a brush on clear builders wood sealant which claimed to be have nano particles sinking into the board. Seems to work on small panels before PVA gluing on canvas and then gesso coats. I shall try a 24x36 inch panel soon but that will probably be plywood for a special project.

    I've found that using some thicker paint and sticking it on the back will " glue " it to rack while drying, that did keep it flat. I like your idea better though, spray it to seal it, there's less chance of warping for sure...I simply kept my fingers crossed! 😂 those that did warp, I sprayed the back with water, placed them face down on wax paper and weighed them down for a few days. 👈 It's still not perfect, as sometimes they'll curl after awhile.

    I tend to think its something to do with the size. 5x7 Artezas are solid, I haven't seen a single thing go wrong with them after something like 18 different pieces but arteza 8x10 about a third of them self destruct and they should be made of the same stuff. More than half of the US Art Supply ones go wrong too but those are 12x12 I can't be sure that it isn't an amplified size effect.

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Size definitely amplifies the affect. The more surface area you have especially that is different size across the different axis will have more room to "move" and therefore bow. The bigger that board the more sturdy you want the insides to be.

I buy the cheap Walmart/dollar store ones for testing results before I use a canvas (lesson learned from not testing first). Some colors and mixes I make just don’t like to play well with others or isn’t desired outcome. I just took some lids from empty 2 Oz paints and nailed them through the canvas to a board. I’m not using them for anything else so that worked for me. But you couldn’t be more helpful for another purpose for these. They do absolutely need sealed because of warping. I haven’t tried artist loft because I’m thrift-ish. But not everyone has $ to throw at a better quality.
