    I actually used corn starch. I didn't like the baby powder that people suggested, and not crazy about chalk. I had some corn starch that was past it's freshness date and that worked wonderfully!

    Just saved me a few quid I can airbush this, it makes a good model primer and if thickened a good primer/filler on plastic model kits. It sands well and takes airbrushed acrylics very well. I was paying £7 to £12 for 12/15ml of primer/filler primer from the manufacturers. Thanks for the video m8. I have subscribed and will browse thanks again.

    Clive - did you know that you can make your own calcium carbonate from egg shells? They need to be clean, so boil them for 10 minutes or so after you clean them. Then let them dry overnight and in the morning put them into the oven (200F) for about 10 minutes. Then you just grind them up in a coffee grinder until they are a powder. You can use the powder for your calcium carbonate in this gesso. Just thought I'd let you know. :)

    Hello, thank you so much, this is brilliant! I know this is one of your older videos but, I was looking for a video teaching how to make homemade clear gesso, and I'm so glad I've found you! I've already just subscribed, and hit the bell for notifications. You seem like a really nice man, and I like you a lot! I'm almost 50 years old, and I've recently been trying out my hand at a few different art mediums. Somehow, I really didn't ever learn about art in school, I wish I had. I used crayons in cheap coloring books as a kid, and that's about it. I've always sort of secretly longed to be an artist.
    I did as a kid, and an adult try to draw every once in a while but, I'm definitely not a natural. I am finally learning about art through youtube videos. Drawing and all art will need to be a skill that I'll have to develop over time through learning, and much practice. I'm disabled, and no longer have a job, so I have loads of time. Unfortunately, I have very little income, although I have been purchasing small amounts of art supplies. So, I do have bits and bobs, which I'm quite grateful for.
    I live in the Pacific Northwest; Washington State, USA. And here we have this real popular thing (it may be popular in other areas, I'm not sure). We have this thing called, "Vancouver Rocks"...people paint on, mainly flat stones and hide them for others to find. Many of the stones are gorgeous works of art. People mostly use acrylic paints and spray them with a clear waterproof sealer. The children in my apartment community spent a lot of time this last spring and summer (which here, is quite short, only about 4 to 5 months of playing outdoors weather)...they spent a lot of time hunting for these rocks which gave them joyful delight when they found one, especially a "good one". They all had their own treasure finds that they carried around with them every day. The children also paint and hide the rocks, which are mostly what they would find. I don't think there are any adults or older kids painting and hiding rocks in our little community. The "good ones" that they had found were generally found when they went on outings with their parents.
    I like to sit outside on a blanket when the weather is nice, and the children spend time with me talking, and also sharing their rocks, and stories with me, which I adore! I checked youtube, and found that there were indeed videos teaching how to paint rocks. I believed I would be capable of painting some at least decently pretty stones. I decided I really wanted to do this for the kids. I began searching around for flatish stones, or otherwise good looking specimens. For instance, I found one that looks very much like a shark, and could stand alone, looking like it was coming out of water, and it has sort of cracks and details, like a shark...especially the mouth. Anyway, I was able to buy an inexpensive set of 24 small tubes of acrylic paint, and 2 ounces of both black and white. I then got some tools to apply the paint, and finally the spray to seal them.
    By the time I had all my supplies ready the weather had changed, and it began raining. We get a whole lot of rain here, actually about 35-45 inches per year and most of that is in the fall. Then it is mostly just cold, until sometime in the spring. Children generally spend time playing outside between the months of May-September. Now, I have everything needed to paint the rocks, but, sort of lost motivation for that (until it gets closer to spring time, probably I'll start working on those within the next 2 months). Meanwhile, I'm beginning to learn to draw. I haven't gotten very far, but I have nearly completed one piece, that I am about to frame and give to my adult son. I did this with the soft core wax based Prismacolor Premier Pencils. I was able to buy the set of 72 colored pencils. Which, I'm still learning how to use, and have done just this one project with.
    I've also recently purchased several "adult coloring books". There are many videos on adult coloring books, and people are coloring beautiful works, and even framing them. I'm hoping to learn to become good at this. I'm planning to use my wax based colored pencils for this, and I am expecting a delivery tomorrow of a set of 72 watercolor pencils I've ordered. Which has brought me to wanting to try using clear gesso on the coloring pages. I've seen other colorists do this on youtube videos. I haven't got enough money to purchase gesso now. I'll have to wait until next month...26 more days exactly.
    That's what led me to this video :-) Unfortunately, I've only got access to the glue, and the water. I haven't got any talc, or baby powder. I'm wondering if maybe cornstarch would work for this??? Or, I've got baking soda (NaHCO3, aka sodium bicarbonate), and I also have sodium hydroxide ( ‎NaOH‎ or ‎HNaO...Sodium hydroxide is very corrosive. It is generally used as a solid or a 50% solution. Other common names include caustic soda and lye. Sodium hydroxide is used to manufacture soaps, rayon, paper, explosives, dyestuffs, and petroleum products.). I use it to make soap. So I have corn starch, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium hydroxide. I also have white crafters acrylic paint, which is pretty runny.
    Do you think I have anything that will produce gesso? I may have to just wait the 26 days, and buy more supplies. But, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask :-) Right? I hope you see my post! Thank You, Very Much!

    Heya Clive I know this is a very old video but I didn't know if you were aware of more recent discoveries. Talc in it's natural form contains asbestos and can cause cancerous tumors so you should always wear protective gear when handling it, gloves and a face mask are the absolute minimum to keep yourself safe. You can buy a product known as asbestos-free talc but even there lab results on whether it, too, causes tumors is mixed with no clear indication on whether it's ACTUALLY safe. So please insure you don't touch or inhale ANY talc. If you have pets please make sure they are also out of the room when working with talc!

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Talc is used as a cosmetic product and is 100% safe however I use calcium carbonate which is pure chalk not the same thing

    This is really nice. A lot of people would learn how to make it cheaply and then rather than tell everyone, sell it in their own shops. I really appreciate that you didn't.

    I'm new at painting and love using alcohol inks to paint. I tried on canvas, not knowing that I had to prime the canvas...it looks great but I think I should have used Gesso to prime the canvas before I painted and I don't know if I need to set the painting with something else after I'm done. Can you help?

    How much of each of the powders: talc, carbonate, and mica are you actually mixing together to make your, 'gesso powder'. That's the only measurement you didn't specify.
    How can you call it 'clear' gesso when the 'medium' / product base you use is white (i.e. school glue)
    When you say, "talc" are you referring to talcum.......as in talcum powder which, is the main ingredient in baby powder?
    Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with the world !!

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All the ingredients are in the description the PVA is white and dries clear same as store bought
