Gelder Shiel Bothy Walk

A beautiful 7 mile walk to Gelder Shiel Bothy and back which lies in the Balmoral Estate. The bothy is sometimes referred to as Ernie’s Bothy.
The walk can be extended to take in the Corbett Conachcraig or the Munro Lochnagar.

Thanks for posting this - has inspired me to get back up that way as its been a while. Same as yourself I've been up Lochnagar twice but never from that direction which seems a shame - looks like a lovely start up by the Gelder Lodge there with the corrie and cliffs ahead.

I will have to try that walk next year plus the cairns. I get the bus from Peterculter up Deeside, plenty of Munro's and Corbetts around Braemar.

We were there last year after cycling in from Ballater. The Bothy was locked when we were there so we sat on the bench outside the lodge. Got to say it is the cleanest Bothy I have ever seen! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Linda, Well this was lovely, i didn't know the Balmoral Estate was open to the public. No wonder the late queen loved this area its absolutely breath taking. Its lovely to see Brora living her best life in nature. The bothy looked very clean and tidy which is always nice to see. Maybe because its by royal appointment. Have a great week and be well.

Is camping outside the bothy allowed if it’s locked or full

I would think so, no signage to state no camping. It’s a beautiful spot to camp. 👍
