Luke, isn't the leakdown you were referring to on your compression tester because of the check valve in the hose and not necessarily the sealing of the engine? Sorry, don't mean to nit-pick. Great video and glad you got a tight JDM. I just installed a H6 JDM engine in a Tribeca a few weeks ago. Only $1000 and she runs strong.
Another really important consideration for a Subaru engine swap, particularly if you're planning to keep your existing stock ECU, is the trigger pattern. There are two such trigger patterns. First. 36-2-2-2 crank with a 2 tooth cam sync. Second. 6 tooth crank and a 1-2-1-3, 7 tooth cam sync. Your stock ECU will only recognise one of these patterns. The crankshaft timing belt drive pulley is an easy swap, but changing the cam sync to match your ECU may not be so easy. Cam sensors read from various locations including the back of the Left Intake Cam Pulley or the rear end of the Left Intake Cam Shaft itself. The easiest way to identify which trigger pattern a wrecked engine has is to just look at the crankshaft timing belt pulley. Edit: in this video at exactly 1:04 you can see the Cam Sensor plug at the back of the Left Intake Cam Pulley. In the case that this engine had the wrong tooth pattern on the back of the Pulley it may be a simple case of swapping to a pulley with the correct tooth pattern. However if this engine was reading cam sync from the rear end of the cam shaft you could only use it with the correct ECU unless you move the sensor to the pulley which requires a special bracket cast into the stock front oil seal cap. (As visible in this video).
Great, great info - BIG thanks for sharing with everyone buddy!!! Yes, I’ll be swapping over all USDM EJ205 parts you point out, basically just gonna swap it all over to the JDM shortblock, heads and everything else. 👊 Cheers and please keep the great info coming my friend - thanks again!!!
I’m be using your channel to basically swap my 06 outback engine and wanted to know is they any parts I should get new and install on the engine I’m install ? Ik I’m suppose to switch all the wiring and sensors wanted to know if I should change anything or replace anything?
Im always concerned that it will fall over when you spin the starter..! Seems i was wrong.. So what is the difference from this and using a leak down tester ?
I love to watch your built series. I wish you could go sometime in depth with vacuum and coolant hoses. I will be swapping ej205 into gc6. If you have any tutorials or pdf with diagrams / schemes/ site i would appreciate it. Greetings 🇵🇱
Hey Luke, how much oil do you put in before your compression test? And likewise I just replaced all the seals and pumps, will doing a test with the starter and oil in the engine also show me if I there are any leaks? Or will those only show after heat and drive time?
I put just one squirt in. But hard to say how much that is. Just wanted a little lub in there to prevent any scoring. This may show some major leaks, but unfortunately you usually don’t see there minor ones till the engine is fired up and builds some heat! As you suspected...
I have an engine I plan on bringing back to life later this summer but is temporarily stored in my garage. Is there a cap/plug set you recommend for storage?
Yes, that’s actually really important. I just use a generic silicone cap and plug set, have them on my Amazon store actually. Here’s the link: Check out this list SUBARU TOOLS from The SubaruONLY Shop www.amazon.com/shop/subaruonly?listId=2UWYBPXBAWGUJ&ref=inf_list_pub_subaruonly
@subaruonly I've made a gear indicator(led screen and all ) system for my H pattern gearbox. If you're interested I can send you the files and help you build it if you like
Yes, they are good little funnels!!! Once you use one, you’ll never use a normal one again - here’s the link (have them in my Amazon store!): Check out this list SUBARU TOOLS from The SubaruONLY Shop www.amazon.com/shop/subaruonly?listId=2UWYBPXBAWGUJ&ref=inf_list_pub_subaruonly
I'm about to swap a JDM long block ( no ecu )into my WRX. But I have to convert a bunch of the sensors, timing belt, etc to USDM since I only have a USDM ecu. I have no idea how to do a timing belt. I have watched all kinds of videos on it but I'm still scared to do it. Because then I'll have to retire it and I don't know how to do that either lol I don't suppose you might have a video on how to do timing belts and re-timing the engine coming up do you?
Exactly the video I needed Luke. I just got a jdm motor and will be doing all these things to it. Nothing like doing things right from the beginning. Btw, how much oil should be in the motor to do a compression test and cylinder leak down test? Does it need to be full? Thank you for this video!
Nice man. Doesn’t really need to have any oil in the oil pan, but just take note that a true leak-down test is most accurate when you have a warm engine with oil lining the cylinder walls. No way to recreate this condition on a engine that’s been sitting, so just squirt a little thin oil (ie 0-10w) into the spark plug holes, trying to get all sides of the cylinder walls, then rotate the engine by hand quite a few times to help smear the oil and work it into the rings. If you don’t do this, the leak-down test will be worse than what’s really representative. When the engine warms up and the pistons expand, they’ll seal up even better, but this is the best you can do with a cold engine.
Are you really gonna put that engine in something without inspecting the timing belt? You really need to take the belt off so you can spin the idlers to see how noisy they are, especially the cogged one.
I love that you cuss in your videos, seems like it's real and not a bunch of bullshit! Nice! 👍
This was a very well timed video. I'm searching for a used engine at the moment
Perfect!!! 👌

Good point buddy. Much appreciated and please keep the info coming my friend. Cheers!!!
Hw do I bleed my subaru timing belt tensioner
See my early timing belt kit video. Just need to slowly compress the plunger, over about 120 seconds for compression.

The leakage is internal to the gauge not the cylinder.
Yes, should use a leak down tester still, good call man!!!

Hi Alex. I'm also interested. Can you send me the files please man
I've seen a lot of people using that kind of funnel for oil, what's difference between a normal funnel and this one thanks.
@K Holman okay thanks

Nice work. 👍
Thanks! 😁👍
Wondering what size starter spacer I would need for a vw transaxle. If I got a measurement could your buddy make one for me?
Hey buddy. Yes, might be able to work something out. Send me an email: SubaruONLYShop@gmail.com

Can your buddy make me one of those spacers? And I pay him for it. Definitely would love to get one.
Hi. Yes, we’ve talked about this. Thinking having them CNCd might be best option, stay tuned. More on this spacer!!!

@@SubaruONLY Excellent. That totally makes sense. Thank you Sir.
Where did you buy that engine from?
Found it on Fb marketplace. $500 cash!
What jdm engine is that? Ej207 version 7?
It’s not a 207, working on securing that one. This is a JDM engine from a twin turbo charged legacy. 👍
What front turbo subframe are you using on your RS?
Using a turbo legacy or GD turbo one, don’t recall for sure.

The vid is just showing compression testing.
