Look. France has been there 'since the mid 1800s' and it's a beautiful tropical island with a wonderful French 'flavor'. Everyone was doing great. Why upset the status quo? The benefits of having France there are immeasurable. What would you do if you gained independence? You'd be infighting about who will control the islands. Tourism would basically stop. Your airline will fail, etc, etc, etc. You wouldn't have the capital to run the nickel mines ... There's no use trying to turn back the clock 150+ years and hope for the best. It will be chaos, just like you're doing there now. You have ruined the place.
What improvement has been done for the island in the last 200 years? Did not see any touch of French, only the poor infrastructure and the natural beauty of the island itself. Why is 1 of 5 indigenous people living under poverty there? Do the indigenous people have the same rights over main land France like the French islander ?
