Mr. Bela Bartok, is not just a monument in western classical music but the entire culture of world music. He pioneered the idea that all musical traditions are important to preserve and study. I salute you...
It is a place in the world called Transylvania where people for hundreds of years live in harmony regardless of ethnicity (Magyar, Romanian, German) or religion. In 1568, the Diet of Transylvania met in Turda, and issued a decree proclaiming the freedom of conscience and religious tolerance for all the inhabitants of Transylvania. Bartok selected popular songs from among the Romanian ethnics and turned them into this masterpiece.

This hall where they are playing is so beautiful. Is it in Oslo? Amazing how similar the folk dances of cultures can be...I could almost hear this as Norwegian folk tunes.
For me it was Solti and the Chicagoans, I believe. This performance definitely adds character, but loses none of the beauty. I hear some Levantine folk music in Bartok's music; the Maharaja of Mysore (a classical music enthusiast and funder) heard Indian folk music in it.
