As a drummer, I can say this guy is one of the best I've ever heard. His rhythmic sense KICKS ASS! Never even heard about him until a few months ago, can't believe it.
This video was probably disliked by the kids who searched for "extreme drumming" and thought this one would be yet another one-dimensional 300BPM doublekicking, with endless blast beats and single stroke rolls. Instead, they found a progressive fusion jazz MONSTER, with impecable technique, chock-full of dynamics polyrhytmic playing with odd time signatures...and disliked it for not being able to yet comprehend what they saw. :)
Wouldn't call it uninteresting going fast and doing crazy shit becase those drummers are excellent in their own right but.... when i first started playing bass i would play to marco doing those solo videos and just try to keep up. I like them all why can't we all just be friends! lol
I'm near certain the whole thing was just for attention. Even though they might not have told Mangini cause his reaction was pretty genuine. But I'm pretty sure they just brought all the other big names in just to get people to tune back in even though Portnoy left. Maybe not but like it would seem like an unbelievably obvious choice if it were real.
Marco, is a mad man, i've been playin drums a long time....got heros like Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Bill Bruford, Bonzo, Neil Peart, Dennis Chambers, then i found Marco......i am in AWE!!!....He's VERY special!!..hope he has a LONG carreer, so i may enjoy him fer years!!!
IMHO, I believe that Marco is one of the top 5 jazz/fusion/rock(ish) drummers alive today... I'm an old fart, and been a drummer for over 50 years. And while I could never compete with the likes of Mr. Minnemann, I DO know skills when I see them...Marco has got skills. He's got videos all over TH-cam...check them out!!!
I don't think Mangini or Minneman, or even Harrison are any people any of us can say "I see nothing so and so can or can't do"....All three are just amazing musicians, none better than the other, just different. And thank god for that. Harrison has been my favorite drummer for quite a while now, and I have developed quite the love for Marco's playing. Mangini hasn't grown on me yet, but I still can't say any of them is better than the other. Keep up the amazing drumming gents, Cheers!
I think i got it....the count is.... ...eleventeen,69,elevendy,0.5,16'2/3s,3 and half years old,1-2-buckle my shoe,-1,1+-1,balls,tree fidy, and one half quarter note of two thirty second note quadtriplet double standard hexatuplet number 2 poops over 3/4 56 single double buzz flutters x2
+Rob Warrilow It was tricky to figure out... I first thought it was 1 ,7 ,double elevendy sixpence a pocket full of rye but after the top underside bottom of the slantways ride groove came in I realized it was 1, 2 buckle my shoe
I once made Marco a cup of coffee. " How many sugars?" I asked. "Three" came the reply, " but I want you to add them to the coffee in 7/8 time, with accents on the 4 and the 7". He ended up wearing the fucking coffee, but I did manage to throw it at him in 3/4. By the way, this joke is easier to understand when accompanied by a click track.
Marco and Paul Gilbert are a match made in heaven. No two individuals have more fun playing music than them, also they're both absolute monsters in case that needed stating.
I saw this guy up in West LA one time ..hes insane...and amazing personality very humble and friendly dude..I told my daddy, i wanna be like markos when I grw up
PintoconLacras Honestly, I've been a Dream Theater for years and don't really like the new direction that they have taken. Feels too straightforward to me. Don't get me wrong, Mangini is a great player (probably better than Portnoy) but I feel like the band lost something in Portnoy.
Jared Fitzgerald First of all, Dream Theater lost a great composer, technique isn't all. And second, Portnoy have a groove that Mangini hasn't, seems like a midi version of Portnoy, plays really good but with less feeling. If the composition is based on velocity and technique results in music for musicians, and listen that music to enjoy ends in a great effort. SORRY about my English if something is wrong. By the way... Minnemann + Steven Wilson is the perfect combination.
It's a pleasure to hear performance at this level, and a genre that raises music reminiscences heard only in the highest performances of all time. compliments
I kinda agree for Thomas Lang, but I discovered Marco Minnemann with his work with Steven Wilson (some lives available on YT) and Guthrie Govan with the Aristocrats. Both projects very very musical :) Check it out!
MikroXdrums i've heard Aristocrats - but i don't find them very interesting honestly. Marco's drumming there nothing particular - maybe i've heard the wrong songs? would be glad if you post a link on interesting stuff they play - i obviously could miss smth

They're special they're pioneers, and they deserve kudos and tremendous respect especially with Mr Portnoy, I would never disrespect their mission nor diminish their accomplishments then or now, -love them still do. I'm a classic rock Guy, been drumming for over 30years. My deepest love for Mr Neil Peart and Mr John Bonham will never die.. however sir, you take the extreme of extreme musical talent, musical comprehension, and general musical extremeness to the absolute extreme of the extreme. Love Marco's playing overall, though my favorite part of this particular video is from 4:05-4:10 simply because he hits that gong drum so many times lol. I love how that thing sounds! :D
This dude is the bestest. Seriously. I've watched a ton of drummers and this guy is the cake that takes it. Sure, other guys are faster, but... Faster don't necessarily mean Better.
You can use the "Audio EQ" Chrome Plugin ;) I use it all the time to filter nasty frequencies on youtube. Especially useful for longer videos like concerts to make it a lot easier on the ears on headphones
I love the sound of DW drums, but those Meinl Byzance series cymbals just sound like toy cymbals. Maybe it's just the way the mics are adjusted? Whatever the case, I liked the kit with the Zyldjian cymbals way better.
this guy makes me want to kill myself, knowing full well, that i will never reach such an amazing level in drumming. but fair fucking play! this is incredible.
This type of music is commonly titled "Fusion", being a melding of Jazz, Rock, Funk, and some circus tricks thrown in. John Lichtenberg I don't think it's bad, I actually quite like it. But personally I enjoy very complex music that goes all over the place.... 13/8 time signature here is a good representation of that haha. To each his own!

I is very important to work up your fillings or humor sence at drumming as well as playing awsome at the same time, enjoy yourself like it was for fun.Thing that Mike Mangini DOES NOT POSSES. They had good chemistry with Marco too. However, Marco wasn't a huge fan of DT unlike Mangini. That made the difference. Marco clarified it on an interview.
Mike Mangini played DT songs note for note. Minnemann CAN play them note for note but he actually wants to layer all kinds of other things and Petrucci said he was having trouble keeping up. Which is impressive in its own way
Diego Ruiz that is exactly what I wrote about on another Marco video. When I saw the auditions, it was clear that DT's decision as a band to choose Mangini, was based on personal reasons involving how well he clicked with the rest of the band
IMO he’s better. Buuut Mike Mangini was a better fit than Marco. He’s got the look, the skill, and the name. Marco definitely has the skill but not as big as mike is.

This presents itself like a 1990s educational VHS. And I love it.
It was arround 1999 - 2001 time. His Live in LA dvd/vhs uses this setup and it was from 2001
How in the world does this guy commit all that stuff to memory, let alone play it so flawlessly? Utterly, utterly incredible.
Insane.
Practice
A labor of love and passion plus enthusiasm.
I have been playing drums for 15 years ,after watching something like this ,my drums are for sale thanks Marco, your amazing....

Don’t give up
Just try to do sone of the crazy stuff you see.

I know watching this makes me wonder also
If Zappa was alive today, he might give that man a call :-)
This dude is much out of Zappa's reach musically. Minus the black page Zappa didnt have very complex music
