  • With the introduction of the Winchester Model 1886 the world of lever actions was changed forever. No previous lever action ever handled as well. No previous lever was as strong. No other lever action ever offered chamberings in such powerful cartridges.45-70 to 50-110 WCF
    The new standard. A new standard is set, and it would be years before another lever action would even come close to the perfection of a Winchester 1886. The 1886 Winchester accompanied settlers all across America. It soon became the premier big game hunting rifle for North America and beyond, It was the rifle that became one of Theodore Roosevelt favorite

    I have a high grade 1886 Miroku takedown Winchester 45-70 just bought it 5 years ago, and it is a beautiful rifle with a heavy octagonal barrel. When I hold it, I feel more joy than any other rifle EVER in my hands !!

      The reason why I checked this videos out is the High grade picture. I have the Buffalo version of that gun. The 100th year anniversary 1 of 3000. You are correct about the feel of the octagonal barrel.

    I loved my first Springfield Trapdoor. It was a life changing moment. It was my first non WW2 old firearm. Before that I was carrying my dad's Phelps 45-70 revolver that he bought new in 1977 or so. It had a 300' barrel and weighed more than my truck. I told my dad that I was going to put a caster on the bottom of the holster to help it from dragging on the ground. Just kidding I didn't want to do any damage to it. You know it's a rare revolver and carrying it in the mountains was just a crime. My dad had to wear a cast on his arm from the first time he shot it. I think he was loading them for a rifle. We ended up at our local gun show in Denver. They were twice a month in the main room of the holiday inn. I got a bit of a stiffy everytime we went there. I went to this old mountain man that had 5 tables of good old fashioned wood and steel fun. Nothing but new and original big bored. I found a really nice trapdoor that was solid as a 60's Cadillac. The guy turned out to be a wonderful gunsmithing also. Well I ended up buying that Trapdoor for $350 this was in 1995. I took it to the mountains a few times but I didn't want to do any damage to it so I bought a Marlin and that rifle spent every trip to the mountains with me. Now I am looking for another Marlin. They are cheap to buy and launch some lead. It's time to get another 45-70 in the collection. I even still have 49 rounds loaded for my Trapdoor that I loaded 20+ years ago. They are in great shape and I'm sure they will shoot. I'm glad I hoard firearms stuff. I loved the video. Happy Shooting

    Slowing it down allows less distortion and more penetration. Faster equates to mushrooming and energy transfer to the target. 😊

    45-70 Govt. is a great cartridge. I've never owned a 1886, but I've had quite a few 45-70's over the years. An 1881 Marlin (one of the only top ejects Marlin made) a Ruger #3 carbine, two Sharps rifles and a trapdoor spring field. I still have one Sharps (My most favorite rifle) and the trapdoor. I wish I hadn't sold that old Marlin! My Sharps hunting load is a 520 grain soft cast bullet over FFF Goex black powder. (Same 500 grain Lyman bullet mould as yours, but soft, near pure lead, weighs out at 520) The bullet lube is homemade 50/50 mix of beeswax and buffalo tallow from a buffalo a friend shot years ago. They are only going about 1,200 fps, but it has passed through everything I've shot with it, including several bears and elk. Pure lead, they mushroom open the size of a quarter.
    Funny, the lighter "express bullets" start out faster, but don't carry as far, or shoot as flat. If you can call a 45-70 flat! Those slow heavy bullets have much more power than folks realize. Pure, or soft lead, and they really do some damage on an elk!
    I've wanted an '86 for thirty years or more, and still don't own one....

    • @Leverguns50
      @Leverguns50  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well hopefully that one day you’ll get an 1886 they sure are a lot of fun to shoot, and I think I would’ve done better on damage if I would’ve use pure lead in the lighter loads, they sure did have a lot of penetration though, I actually think the lighter loads would be good on bigger animals our little deer don’t even slow them down good

    • @MuskratOutdoors
      @MuskratOutdoors 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Leverguns50 That can be a problem too. Not enough time to expand in a smaller animal. Believe it or not, I hunted cottontail rabbits with a 50-70 Remington rolling block. The first one I shot, I thought "why did I do that? There won't be anything left". But all it did was poke a finger sized hole through it. Really not much more damage than most 22LR will do. Plenty to eat. The bullet isn't going that fast. but zipped through a rabbit without time to flatten out. Definitely overkill and a waste of lead and powder, but it was fun and good practice! Rabbits are good eating too!

    That 250 grains Barnes bullet looks like perfection! I'm a bit surprised the hot loads didn't penetrate further and the light powder loads penetrated far! Like you said though, perhaps it turned sideways. I'm surmising that the bullets that didn't penetrate as far release all their energy into the deer while there's much wasted energy with the heavy, light powder loads.

      Most of the time my experience, has been that faster moving bullets penetrate Steel better but not other materials, which is one of the reasons Elmer Keith talked Winchester into slowing down there 458 Winchester Magnum, because he said it wasn’t penetrateing enough at the higher velocity, so now they come out with the 458 a lot to speed it back up, people never learn, faster makes a better mushrooming bullet, if you don’t need much penetration but you want a lot of expansion faster bullets do that
