We are friends with Conway’s daughters, Kathy & Joni, who loved their Daddy dearly. He was wonderful to his family and loved and respected his fans. Both his daughters still miss their daddy terribly and they’re so down to earth and approachable, although they have had many health problems and also lost their dear momma to cancer a couple of years ago. A beautiful, giving family for sure!

My parents' first date was to a Conway Twitty concert in our small southern town and the opening act was a new guy in town, Elvis Presley!

    • @jeffkeller2768

Sounds like a great story, but Elvis never opened a show for Conway Twitty. As a matter of fact, it was after Conway heard Elvis Presley's recording of the song Mystery Train that he started writing rock and roll music. Elvis was a big influence on Conway who originally tried to sound like Elvis. Elvis had been doing his thing for nearly 2 years when Conway first took to the stage. I am not trying to sound disrespectful to your story, but if you do your research, you will find that the two never met face to face. They were both great entertainers in their respective fields.

When my dad came home from his military stint, he was in an all night greasy spoon diner used by truckers. (Dad went over in the army during WWII, and came home in the “new branch”, the Air Force during the Korean War.) He said a young punk truck driver came in around 2:00am. This was before they put a limit on the number of hours a trucker could drive, and these diners were few and far between. When the young man with the light brown, almost blond hair, asked the waitress about his tip, she said he had to sing. Apparently, he had been in that diner in southern Missouri many times. He said he would only sing if all the folks there sang with him. They all sang “Peace in the Valley”. And, that’s the night my dad sang with Elvis. Dad said he was a nice and respectful young man. And, all the folks in that diner that night were happy he chose a gospel song.

Some other great songs by him are "It's Only Make Believe", "Linda on My Mind", "Don't Cry Joni", "Don't Take It Away", "I'd Love to Lay You Down", "Tight Fittin' Jeans", “Julia”, "Slow Hand", and "The Clown". A member of Cimarrons suggested Don Seat as a manager for Jenkins, and Seat indicated to Jenkins that he needed a name with star quality. Jenkins then adopted a stage name in 1957. In The Billboard Book of Number One Hits, Fred Bronson states that the singer named himself after two towns on a map; Conway, Arkansas, and Twitty, Texas, and chose the name Conway Twitty.

That's music. The artists is supposed to make you feel the feelings behind the word's and not just sing the word's without feeling. That's what music lacks these days. No real feeling just dollar signs to a lot of artists. Somewhere they forgot how to make you feel the heartbreak or the feeling to jump up and dance across the floor just because the song made you feel like doing so.
