so I'm planning to upgrade my hamster to a bin cage and I was thinking about drilling bigger holes in the top. do u think that that would be enough ventilaion?
SADIE no do not use holes as ventalation.. it’s an absolute no i would recommend useing mesh and also a reson you wouldn’t use holes is because it’s not enough air going through them no matter how many and how big and it can cause humidity and can make your hamster vry sick so i would recommend the mesh.. sorry if that makes no sence or it’s just loads of rambling ✨x
@@sadie7994 If you can't get your hands in any mesh you can cut stripes in the lid of the bin. If your bin us pretty tall you could do a few thick stripes but if you're a little worried about your hamster escaping I would cut lots of thinner stripes to be safe and maybe a few small holes on the sides if the bin for extra airflow
I’m doing research rn about hamsters and I’m not even getting them 😂 my auntie has 2 and they don’t have a good life because my auntie doesn’t care :( so I’m giving them a good life with a good cage and everything they need
I saw a girl on Tiktok take two picture frames and glued put the wire onto it and made them doors for the top definitely a cute idea I’m thinking of doing it so it’s easier than opening the lid and beautiful cage💖
I’m using a 20 gallon tank which is what I was recommended but I’m thinking this will be bigger floor space if I got a 116 qt bin at my Home Depot. would it not be good enough if I just poked a bunch of holes through the top lid with a drill?
I would definitely suggest going up to a 116qt bin cage or larger but I would not recommend the holes. Using Mesh is much better since holes do not allow for much air circulation.
I adopted a hamster 2 days ago. I only have a 20 gallon tank I know it's too small... But I want to make a bin cage, how big of a bin do I need? Also can I duck tape the mesh thing instead of making holes and zip ties?
Slick Nick so I would suggest getting a 110 quart bin or more. The one I was making in this video was only 105 quarts though. Also, you can just use duck tape for the mesh that is perfectly ok! 👍🏼 Good luck with your new hamster!! 🐹
Slick Nick yes you can use tape and also the BEST POSSIBLE is 110 quart bin it might be a little to big buy it is the best possible option the bin is only 20 dollars at Walmart
Next time use a hairdryer to soften the plastic. It makes cutting the plastic very easy! I make my own cat litter boxes out of bins and that’s how I cut through the plastic without it snapping or killing my hand.
Great video! I did a bin cage too, but instead of using mesh wire ( which can hurt a bit), I bought PVC mesh instead. It is easy to cut PVC mesh using scissors, and you won't hurt yourself.
hey just wanna say good job on the bin cage and I am planning on making a bin cage for my hammy since it lived in a critter trail Wichita is so wrong and I know that now

Can I use a 116 qt bin for my hamster? She is currently living in a 20gal tank. Also can drill small holes in the bin lid. Because I don’t have any mesh?
Ray Ortiz yes, i’d say that’s fine put i’d recommend mesh because with just holes, humidity can go up and potentially hurt the hamster. so try and get mesh or make lots of really huge holes, again mesh is preferred.
Use a large drill bit, not a tiny one. And please drill a hundred or more holes, not a score (20)...The more holes the better... These bins can get too hot for the hamster sitting in the sun without proper ventilation even when the rest of the room is air conditioned...
Ray Ortiz size is fine. But get mesh. No matter how many holes you put in it, it will not be enough ventilation for a hamster. Poor ventilation can cause it to get hot and humid and make it uncomfortable for the hamster in the cage.
Walmart has one by Sterilite with 200 quarts (50 gallons) and its only $20! Its the best bin cage ive found. Id honestly recommend that one. More space makes a happy hammy! Best of luck to you. Drill lots and lots of holes if you arent gonna use mesh. 1/2 inch holes would provide lots of ventilation.
I have a very large bin cage, and a habitrail on top via tubes. She goes up and down, but sleeps in the tiny upper chamber. She hardly goes down any more and it's a better space in the bin. More substrate, stays cleaner, wheel etc. I can't figure out why this nut job wants to sleep upstairs where she poops and pees right in her bed. Any ideas? Was actually thinking of taking the upper cage out altogether. ????
She may not like going down since it may be steep. I had my cage the same way and my hammy showed sign of stress. She would look down and go back and climb the bars of her small cage and bite the bars too
I don't think the upper chamber provides enough oxygen ventilation since the holes are tiny. It's almost like having a hamster inside Tupperware with pen holed
Mimi Shella I'd just get rid of the small cage. Tubes can be stressful for hamsters. So she may not like going through them. Keeping the bin cage (min 450sq in) is the best idea.
Angelie Mendoza the wheel in this video was only an 8in, I have since upgraded to an 11in though. What I do it I just make the bedding lower on one side so the wheel can fit and higher on the other so it is good for burrowing.
is it necessary to put the top? or can I leave it without the top? Another thing is bedding, I feel that I change the bedding very frequently which I have to be buying every two weeks since it is used a lot in a bin cage, how often can it be changed? I hope you can help me
I don’t think a top is necessary if there’s no way for your hamster to get on top of its wheel or anything like that to climb out. If you have a small cage aka smaller than 450 you should clean it once a week. Anything above 450 like a bin cage or a tank that’s large can be cleaned once a month with spot cleaning and such. I’m a new owner but I researched a lot and this is what I found. Watch Victoria Raechels hamster videos.
I know the feeling when you envision a project and it seems so easy, just cut out the plastic, zip tie some mesh and you’re done… cut to an hour later when your hands are bleeding and your back hurts lol. You did a good job anyway 😁
Bare minimum of bins its 106 qt instead of 105 qt since 105 qt it’s only like 400 sq inches and 106 qt bin its like only 10 inches below minimum but you can put 4 inches makes it 453 sq inches of floorspace
So I'm just thinking , do I even need to put a lid on the tote ? I don't see how theyd be able to climb up the plastic . If you have one high enough anyway
they can still escape, so yes you would need a lid. they are really good escape artists, they can climb their wheel, toys, hides, etc. and since there bedding is (well it should be) at least 6 inches it gives them leverage to get out :)
No the hamster will chew through the net. You should definitely get the metal kind. You can get it for like 7$ at your local hardware store and it’s a whole roll.
@yooncurious I wouldn't use it just to be safe as your hamster can chew through it. Mesh wire is cheap and if you can't find it in a shop you can order it online.
I suggest getting just one bin, the two bins does not equal 460 because it's like two cages. I suggest u connect them together or just get one overall good luck with ur hammy :)
A 106 qt bin floorspace its pretty much the same than a 110 qt or 116 qt,they differ from height, that means if you put more bedding, since the bins slop, then will add a little more florspace

makayla kintner yes drilling holes is definitely another option to mesh, however I found the air circulation is not the best unless you drill a LOT of holes. Hope this helps!
I would really not recommend this. It isn't enough ventilation and there isn't good control of the temperature inside the bin. Your hamster can overheat easily.
@@actualgracie5044 It wouldn't matter much with air conditioning as long as you drill or melt with a soldering iron a ton of holes, melting the holes as tight as possible. Try using either a heavy duty rotary drill cutter or rotary scissors. You can find both at craft stores or a diy store like Lowes or Home Depot. They also have those larger sized plastic bins.
I sdon't own a hamster BUT I own two female mice and my cage is to small, so I need a cheap upgrade and I know this is a good option, but where can you get it?

Yay, I love that you have bin cages! but, one thing is, on your thumbnail you had filled the enclosure. Please forgive me if I’m wrong, but it looked like you were using an about 8 inch wheel. That is quite too small for even most hamsters, and especially females. Please try to upgrade to a 14 inch+ wheel. Thank you! And again, sorry if I’m wrong 😅
@@mckayla3263 not as much as a rabbit does thats what i meant for hamsters atleast 450sq feet for guinea pigs Idk but since they are pretty big i would say close to what a rabbit needs
I’d like some opinions. I have a project in mind for my local shelter. They have an older building and not many supplies and they keep their younger kittens in large dog carriers. They don’t adopt out their animals until they are fixed so the kittens have to stay there or be fostered until they’re at least two pounds. They don’t use the wire crates to keep the those kittens in because More wire means more chances for injury and also the solid sides of the carriers act as a sneeze guard for everyone. That’s all good reasoning and logic but the problem is that the carriers are cumbersome and large, but even though they are large, they do not provide much floor space for the kittens. So it’s a lot of pointless/useless space and weight. Also, those are expensive and the ones they have are very old and the doors are rusty (not safe) and the patches are broken so they have to Jerry rig most of them. So I’m trying to figure out a solution for them that’s cheap, easy to clean/sanitize/least chances of kitten injury/light weight/good use of space/enough floor space for the kittens/etc. I WAS looking at fish tanks but the only ones that would provide enough floor space (I’m wanting at least 20”x30”) are super expensive and you have to buy the lid separate. I stumbled across this bin cage idea today and I think this may be my solution as it checks ALL of my boxes! I’m thinking a clear 200 quart tote Would be a good size. Walmart has one for about $25 that’s 38”x20” (which is way more room than those carriers provide). I don’t want to put a door on the sides because they’re supposed to act as sneeze guards so the top is my only option. I’m thinking that two wire grid panels (like the kind the cube and chloroplast guinea pig cages are made out of) would be good in stead of using mesh. There’s a size that’s about 14”x14” with the grid being 9 squares by 9 squares which is plenty small enough for kittens. So I figure I can cut TWO square holes in the lid at 12”x12” each (that way the plastic would over lap the wire grid panels on the under side) and zip tie just one side of the panels to the lid, tight enough to not slid but loose enough to act as a hinge. So then all I would need is a way to easily but securely latch the panels to “close” them on the lid. Remember, this is for a shelter environment with lots of cleaning and stuff going on. What’s everyone’s opinions? Does this sound like a feasible plan for weaned kittens under 8 weeks old? They’re about the size of guinea pigs or less. And constructive criticism? Anyone use bin cages for kittens before? Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
With fosters wood isn’t very safe because it can’t really be sanitized like metal or plastic can. But those bins I mentioned actually do work really well for smaller foster kittens, or even ones up to 12 weeks old if you only have one in there. I mean it’s still more space than what a lot of shelters can provide so the kittens can’t complain 😂
My mom called me stupid for suggesting a bin cage, saying that our small cage is good enough. I ignored her, and I just bought a bin to turn into a cage. It's 660 sq inches. I got two of them, for both of my hamsters(babies now but I'm separating them)
My hamster cage is currently too small and I feel so bad for my little Izzy, my mums letting me upgrade to a bin cage but I don’t know where to buy a bin, or at least type into a website to order one online. Does anyone mind telling me some good shops (in the uk) that I could buy a storage bin from? Thanks😊 update: for my bday i got a 1069 square inches of floor space cage!! my hamster is still chewing but im saving up to buy her little toys🥰🥰
Valérie Eloïsa I went to b&m and Home Bargains today and sadly none of the storage bins were big enough, but I’ll try and find a nearby ‘building shop’. Thanks☺️
A tip for anyone watching! Use a candle to heat your knife if you’re doing this method. It is way easier and you won’t get burned as easily as lighting a lighter to heat the knife
my neighbor is really good with tools so thank god I had him cut my bin cage because without it mine would look even worse than that lol. The lid for mine is SUPER thick.
Mesh is preferred, but you could also drill many many holes into the lid, say a hundred or more with a large drill bit. Don't get lazy drilling only twenty holes... The more holes the better for proper ventilation...
Ron clark, I would really not recommend this. It isn't enough ventilation and there isn't good control of the temperature inside the bin. Your hamster can overheat easily.
Yes! That is "Alright." But I would really recommend upgrading if your hamster shows signs of boredom. (Like scratching at the bin, trying to climb out, etc.)
Walmart has a 200qt Sterilite bin (50 gallons) for $20. That would be the best size and what I would recommend. Hangers need as much space they can get.
Love that you're adopting hamsters but in my opinion as long as I'm giving the hamster a proper, nice home where it can have a healthy and sustainable life I'm good with buying a hamster.
'it was so hard to cut the plastic' it was only hard because you chose the hard way....now if thats all you had then thats that..nothing wrong with that. But..if your of the right age to use a soldering iron safely(or have a parent that can) then use that some come with a knife like tip...WalMart sells a cheap ones that works great....just remember to use it in a area with good ventalation due to the fumes and cutting the plastic and even making the holes for the zips ties will be a whole lot easier
@@eleanorgrace6600 It does not meet the minimum if that's what you're asking, it needs to at least be 110 qt. But even then I recommend exceeded the minimum, 200 qt bins are great options :) they're around 600-700 sq in
It's impossible to hold the lighter on long enough to heat the knife sufficiently. A big candle and two knives are better. One knife can heat while you use the other one.
Using a box cutter would probably be better than a knife. And instead of a lighter, you can use a hair dryer to soften the plastic a little at a time to cut it easier.

@@ronclark9724 a 106 qt bin its only acceptable for a dwarf, not a Syrian since this bin its only 435 sq inches of floorspace
Could i put alot of holes insted of mesh?
makayla kintner yes drilling holes is definitely another option to mesh, however I found the air circulation is not the best unless you drill a LOT of holes.
Tons of holes as many as possible, don't be lazy. Melt the holes in a well ventilated space, such as outside on your porch. Furthermore, air conditioning removes humidity significantly as well...
@@ronclark9724 the hamster creates heat and if the heat cant get out the hammy is gonna overheat even with air conditioning
were do you buy that bin?
Where is this bin cage from please?
My son and I are going to adopt baby hamster from LAShelter this weekend .. will be making a bin cage for him today 🙂
Umm where did you get the bin or anybody can tell me when to find a 400 square litter bin cage or any cage that’s under 50
Try using either a heavy duty rotary drill cutter or rotary scissors. You can find both at craft stores or a diy store like Lowes or Home Depot. They also have those larger sized plastic bins.
Bingo!!! And it's deep enough for them to make a tunnel system for itself! Thank you and sorry about the passing of your hamster.😎🤙
Does anyone know where to get big enough storage boxes in the uk? Everywhere I look they are smaller than 80cm x 50 cm (uk minimum)
Hope this is helpful x
quick question how long did it take to cut the plastic
I sdon't own a hamster BUT I own two female mice and my cage is to small, so I need a cheap upgrade and I know this is a good option, but where can you get it?
I got my cage from Walmart, it is a 105 qt bin cage however I would recommend getting just a little bit larger one at 110 qt bin which is the one I wish I had got. I believe you can also find similar bins at target, Lowes, Home Depot and places like that.
@@nickyyrenee Oh my gosh thank you so much I really need an upgrade as I mentioned and I will try find one of these in y area, thank you.
Where did you get that bin
I got my bin from Walmart :)
where did you get the bin to make the bin cage from? x
You can get it from Walmart or home depot it's not that hard to find
Loving the royalty free music 😩 nah but seriously good job on the cage, I bet ur hamster loves it
Omg your so good at this I'm saving up money to get all the things I need for my hamster good luck on your hamster cage though🍩🐹
Update??
U dnt have to be perfect it's merely the love n concern for ur pet matters
Yay, I love that you have bin cages! but, one thing is, on your thumbnail you had filled the enclosure. Please forgive me if I’m wrong, but it looked like you were using an about 8 inch wheel. That is quite too small for even most hamsters, and especially females. Please try to upgrade to a 14 inch+ wheel. Thank you! And again, sorry if I’m wrong 😅
like rabbit or guinea pigs?

Great video! Thanks!
Hello, I am Thai. This channel is very good. I am making a hamster-related channel. Your channel gives a very good idea.
how many liters that bin ?
Isn’t a 105 qt bin small for a hamster? It’s like 390 sq inches, but some say it’s 433 sq inches that it’s close to the minimum
Where do you get big storage bins i can't find one big enough
probably walmart would be good :)
You make me happy🙃
Did you get your bin from?
I got my bin from Walmart, but similar bins can be found at Target, Lowes Hardware, home depot, and most other hardware stores.
My mom called me stupid for suggesting a bin cage, saying that our small cage is good enough. I ignored her, and I just bought a bin to turn into a cage. It's 660 sq inches. I got two of them, for both of my hamsters(babies now but I'm separating them)
I'm so glad u did ur research :)
No bin its 660 sq inches,if it is a 200 qts maybe,but if it is a 106/110 qt then it’s around 450 sq inches,not 660
My hamster cage is currently too small and I feel so bad for my little Izzy, my mums letting me upgrade to a bin cage but I don’t know where to buy a bin, or at least type into a website to order one online. Does anyone mind telling me some good shops (in the uk) that I could buy a storage bin from? Thanks😊
update: for my bday i got a 1069 square inches of floor space cage!! my hamster is still chewing but im saving up to buy her little toys🥰🥰
like building stores or something
Valérie Eloïsa I went to b&m and Home Bargains today and sadly none of the storage bins were big enough, but I’ll try and find a nearby ‘building shop’. Thanks☺️
Try Amazon! So many big bins on there and you can easily diy the rest
The channel of life Aw thanks! And I’ll tell Izzy you said hi☺️
If you haven’t found one yet, you can get them from wilkos, B&M or home bargains. They have quite big ones and they’re really cheap! X
Woww so crazy insane bro woowwww
How many liters is the box?
A tip for anyone watching! Use a candle to heat your knife if you’re doing this method. It is way easier and you won’t get burned as easily as lighting a lighter to heat the knife
I'm so excited for kit and Kat new 🏠
What is the size of the bin?
Hey umm where do you get zip ties??

my neighbor is really good with tools so thank god I had him cut my bin cage because without it mine would look even worse than that lol. The lid for mine is SUPER thick.

Where can I buy the cage?
Can you just use an open bin without the lid? It seems high enough for a hamster to not get out
LOVE THE WILLY WONKA PURE IMAGINATION REMIX
what mesh did you use
everything is good here
Does anyone know where I can buy a good hamster bin cage? I’m too lazy to make one lol
Use a aquarium
Look on craigslist for a tank 40 gallons should do, I got mine for free but u can find one for way cheaper than brand new on craigslist.
Do you need mesh
Mesh is preferred, but you could also drill many many holes into the lid, say a hundred or more with a large drill bit. Don't get lazy drilling only twenty holes... The more holes the better for proper ventilation...
Ron clark, I would really not recommend this. It isn't enough ventilation and there isn't good control of the temperature inside the bin. Your hamster can overheat easily.
My bin is 450 sq inches is that alright
Where do u buy the mesh?
Can you just drill holes on the lid?
Aghh i love the video 😆 btw i feel sad about ur hamster that been past away 🥺😭
'it was so hard to cut the plastic' it was only hard because you chose the hard way....now if thats all you had then thats that..nothing wrong with that. But..if your of the right age to use a soldering iron safely(or have a parent that can) then use that some come with a knife like tip...WalMart sells a cheap ones that works great....just remember to use it in a area with good ventalation due to the fumes and cutting the plastic and even making the holes for the zips ties will be a whole lot easier
Those air holes are not enough ventilation. They need a mesh top. Also an 105 qt bin doesn't reach the minimum. Especially for a Syrian
Does 116QT reach the minimum fof a Syrian?
@Mckayla Wood how many square inches is a 105 qt bin?
@@eleanorgrace6600 It does not meet the minimum if that's what you're asking, it needs to at least be 110 qt. But even then I recommend exceeded the minimum, 200 qt bins are great options :) they're around 600-700 sq in

@@umbrellaella4344 I found mine at Walmart, but there’s lots of similar bins out there from different stores!
Cant i just make a bunch of holes at the top?
It's impossible to hold the lighter on long enough to heat the knife sufficiently. A big candle and two knives are better. One knife can heat while you use the other one.
where did u buy this bin?
I got it from Walmart, but I know they sell them at Target and other hardware stores.
I forgot what bin that's used in the video is. Can someone tell me?
Using a box cutter would probably be better than a knife. And instead of a lighter, you can use a hair dryer to soften the plastic a little at a time to cut it easier.
I need a link to one big enough that’s not super expensive and doesn’t come in a pack I just need one for my sisters hamsters it’s in a too small cage rn pls help

If you can’t buy mesh can you just drill holes in the lid like the first bin cage you showed in this video
I was thinking the same thing because I couldn't find mesh wires so I m going to drill holes
Elijah Gonzalez drilling holes in the lid is completely fine as long as there are a lot so there is food air circulation. 👍🏼 What I did when I was using that particular cage was I also left the lid of the bin cage open a crack so more air could get in and it was tall enough so my hamster couldn’t get out. Hope I helped!
I would really not recommend this. It isn't enough ventilation and there isn't good control of the temperature inside the bin. Your hamster can overheat easily.
