14 Things Hamsters Love the Most

  • In this video, we will discover 14 things hamsters love the most.
    Deep Bedding
Hamsters are natural-born burrowers. In the wild, they dig through substrate to make a network of intricate tunnels for warmth, protection, and to sleep in.
Since hamsters love to burrow, you'll want to make sure you're providing your hammy with the opportunity to express their natural instincts. It is important to give your hamster at least 6 inches of safe bedding to dig and create burrows. The deeper the bedding, the better.
    A Large wheel
Hamsters are high-energy animals and their bodies are built to run. A large wheel is an essential item in any hamster cage to help them get exercise and cover the miles of distance they would in the wild.
    Sleeping during the day
Remember, hamsters sleep during the day and are more active at dawn and dusk. If you want your hamster to be happy, let them sleep as much as they want during the day. Clean the cage and interact with your pet in the evening hours when they wake up on their own.
    Hiding spots
Hamsters are prey animals and they find the most comfort in small, dark places where they can hide and feel safe. A hiding spot allows them to shelter when they are spooked or feel threatened. Having nowhere to take cover, will make your pet scared, stressed and anxious.
    Foraging
    Hamsters are natural foragers.
In the wild, hamsters run long distances every night to explore and find food. Consider providing fun, nutritionally-appropriate foraging opportunities for your small pet.
This can be achieved by sprinkling their food around the cage, or hiding treats in their bedding and toys. This will make your hammy search and work for its food.
    A variety of food
Hamsters love a high-quality, high-variety diet. In the wild, hamsters would eat seeds, grasses, nuts, fruits, vegetables, insects, frogs, lizards and other small animals. Make sure to provide your pet with a high variety seed mix along with high-protein pellets.
    Things to chew on
Hamsters’ teeth grow continuously all their lives. They’re designed to be worn down to the right length by grinding away at hard objects. Make sure to provide your pet with a variety of hard objects such as wooden chew toys, walnut, coconut shells or even cardboard to chew on. The more your hamster has to chew on, the happier it will be.
    Spreading their scent
Like many other animals, hamsters are territorial creatures and they love marking their territory.
Syrian hamsters have scent glands that are located on their sides, whereas some dwarf hamster scent glands are on their lower abdomen.
In order to mark their territory, a hamster will often rub their bottom or sides across the floor or against cage furnishings.
Hamsters also mark with their scent to signal to other hammies that they are ready for mating.
    A soft massage
Once you have gained the trust of your hamster, you can pet them with light, delicate strokes.
Although most hamsters are solitary in the wild, these pets have since become affectionate and love getting attention from their owners
But remember, there are some hamsters that simply aren't big fans of being held or touched by people. If you have a new pet hamster, they may simply need time to get used to you.
    A large cage
Although hamsters are small, they need plenty of room to exercise, burrow and explore. Be sure to provide your hammy with an environment as large as possible with the enrichment they need to stay happy.
One scientific study done on cage size revealed that housing hamsters in small cages induce chronic stress.
    Cardboard Tubes
A fun item for any hamster is a cardboard tube that comes from toilet paper rolls or paper towels. Hamsters love to crawl through these tiny spaces and might even chew up the cardboard to play with.
Keeping their enclosure in a good spot
Where you put your hamster's cage can have a bigger impact on their health and happiness than you probably realize.
As prey animals, hamsters can be prone to stress, so their enclosure should be placed in an area where there isn't a lot of noise or traffic.
Stress can affect your pet’s physical well-being in addition to their mental well-being.
    Sand baths
Wild hamsters originally lived in dry and warm places such as sand dunes, savannahs, and near deserts, so it’s natural that they’ll enjoy a sand bath.
Provide your pet with a container of pet-safe sand. Your hamster will dig and roll around in the sand granules. As the sand is abrasive, it removes grease, moisture and dirt from their fur.
    Yummy treats
Healthy treats are certainly a way to make your hamster happy. When they realize that you're the one providing them with such deliciousness, they'll love you for it!
    Clean enclosure
Hamsters are very clean animals and they appreciate a clean, nice environment. Dirty and smelly homes will create mental and physical health problems for your pet.
Make sure to spot-clean and remove visible debris from the cage on a daily basis.

For bedding, it's recommended to use between 8-10 inches instead of 6. Youll also need a cage thats at least 100cm×50cm. Barred cages in my opinion and experience are not great options as the base is not deep enough and the bars encourage stress behaviours like bar climbing and bar chewing. You'll also want an upright solid 10 inch minimum wheel for your hammy to not have a bent back with no saucer wheels. They're not safe, neither are balls xx

This is a great video! ❤One of the rare ones on yt that actually gives good information! I would just add that with bedding it is important not to use pine and cedar because they cause respiratory infections. When it comes to wheels the running surface must be solid, no wired wheels. They cause bumblefoot or even broken feet or legs. I am also so happy to see hamster balls are not mentioned because hamsters don't like them at all, they are stressful, lack ventilation and can break a hamster's toe or foot.

I like to watch these videos even though I know these things sometimes you get ideas on the same knowledge that you know.. The first big thing I did was I put a camera to watch what he does at night..I highly recommed this bc there were so many times I saw him on the camera and it helped me know what things in particular he liked or what I could do differently or the toys he used the most.. When he was in his smaller cage I noticed he was stressed and so that's when I did research on those small cages and changed right away to a bin cage which I highly recommend doing!
Some things I did that really have worked for my hamster who is picky.. I have tried many different ways to entertain him. And here are some things that really work: I like to use a shipping tube for my hamsters to crawl thru..my little guy love it! I just incorporated into his bin cage..along with ladders, He's got a huge wheel even though hes small He's a Chinese hamster ( they are Not to dwarf they are just a smaller breed) I had meant to order the 8-in wheel but they gave me a 12".. I wasn't going to use it but then I let him try it I was thinking if he can use it without straining to use it or having any issue using it then why not? He loves it! It's one of those that is closed and it's got the little holes they can run into the wheel with.. He loves it he uses it like a little hideout too..and another is I scatter feed him and I will put his seeds he loved in little spots all around his bin..Also for treats he likes oatmeal (just dry no water added) he loves chia seeds, And also hamsters can have eggs, They can have chicken They can have shrimp..I just give him a 🤏 small amount but he love it!

Great video, many people do not know this information. Think of all the crappy cages on tiktok. Thank you for trying to educate people. Hamsters all have different personalities and needs and you did a great job trying to educate. My one hammie (long hair syrian) hates burrowing and will over groom if too much bedding or substrate gets into his fur. He never burrowed and when I tried hiding food in deep bedding, he refused to touch it. (Don't get me wrong, he still piles bedding in his hides, but just doesn't dig in it. basically just enough bedding to cover himself and so that a lot doesn't get stuck in his fur. I have also tried many different brands). He prefers just to move the bedding into his home. So I keep bedding at 6 inches in winter, but lessen it when the weather warms up. My other hamster, (who is a Chinese hamster) loves bedding and climbing) So i give him as much as I can fit in the cage he is in! (8-10) and as many safe climbing toys since he doesn't have the greatest eyesight. Also, thank you for mentioning that not all hamsters like to be touched! It is all about personalities of the individual hamster. I have had robos that love to be cuddled but the next one is just zooming around and freaks out when you try to touch them. I have had hamsters that don't like specific people as well. They are such complicated beings and each one is different.
Note: Females need bigger cages! My boy syrians fair well in a 75 gallon tank while my female was not quite satisfied. My boy Chinese is in a bin cage that is a tad bit bigger than a 40 tank. Boys are easy to please, girls are not.

I have had 2 hamsters in my life. With the first one the cat use to sit on top of his enclosure. In look down probably thinking. “Only if I could get in there and eat you.”

7:41 Correction: Full cage cleans are VERY stressful for your hamster and should only be done if absolutely necessary (example: the cage gets mites)
