Only person rating Souls type games a 5/10 are just bias against the genre in its entirety. They just hate that style of game and no matter how good it actually is within that genre, they’ll give it allow score.

Because standards for Souls games are way higher now compared to back then. We didn't even have Nioh back then so 8 was generous and a result of starvation in the genre.
Reviews are based of a reviews individual opinion. I personally like the diversity in reviews and I love when a journalist doesn’t hop on the hype train and let the hype decide the score.
This sounds very much like someone looking for reasons not to enjoy it. It also sounds like someone wanted a nice linear game to hold their hand through it. Complaining that not every route he chose was the “main path”, and “only” finding weapons or armour… he is aware that exploration and finding loot has been a staple part of action RPGs since way before even Demon’s Souls existed? It isn’t perfect, but 5?! 🤔

The famitsu way of reviewing needs the hit west, 4 people play the game and give their own scores, the final score is a combination of their scores but you are still able to see what each one gave. This review sounds like the reviewer is trying to find ways to not like it at all lol

The reviews for this game are all over the place in a way that I don’t think I’ve ever seen. It’s too easy, it’s too hard. Exploration is amazing, it’s too unwieldy. The combat is unique and fun, too hard and clunky. But NOBODY gave this game a 5. Reviews have become truly useless.
True. It's weird af. I've been playing it, and first couple of hours was a little meh. But once i really got the hang of it, it's a blast. Im not usually a parry guy, but in this game, parrying isnt hard. Mixing dodging and parrying while doing some chip damage to regain health is actually more fun than i expected. The only thing that kinda takes away from the experience is the performance issues, which i think everybody agrees on.
It’s not useless- it’s important to have different perspectives, both good and bad. Divisive reviews help point out variety of pros and cons so consumers can judge for themselves what is most important to them.
Or maybe just maybe reviewers have different opinions than one another? Do you read a review expecting any other review to be the same? No. We need diverse opinions and then it's up to you to decide what you want.
They even reward exploration with upgrade materials for zhe lamp and healing 😅 the level design is really great with all the shortcuts, it‘s just the enemy hords and the rarity of checkpoints, that ruin the experience for me

@fenix__ its actually a 75 people studio, and CI games also helped with about 50 people, so more than 100 people were working on this game for nearly 4 years
All legitimacy in this review went out of the window when the reviewer complained about pathway’s that only lead to loot that his particular build couldn’t use at that time. Let that sink in; he found a weapon that wasn’t suitable for his build….like, he’s the only one playing the game in the world and all gear found should immediately fit his build. SMH The game has legitimate criticisms like frame rates (which are getting better) and egregious ranged enemy numbers and placement. But the majority of this lads complaining was around staples of the genre. And I should also remind everyone about the state of Elden Ring on PC at launch. Seems everyone’s forgotten about that now that it’s the greatest game ever. (To be clear, it is amazing but I thought that was worth pointing out)
That's something that only Lies of P, out of all the souls like games does it right, the sense of progression and reward mixed with great atmosphere and level design.
Lies of P is pretty linear but has better boss fight while the better level design is for this game, this reviewer is just bad by his footage he needs someone to tell him that the area he is going is over his level

It constantly challenges your patience with elite enemies and an heck'n slash number of regular enemies over and over again.
Started it last night - it certainly lacks the polish of FromSoftware and really just makes you marvel at that studios work even more. Even the fidelity, while in game looks relatively good there are some odd low res textures here and there (on PS5) I was blown away at just how BAD the character creator assets looked… like Bloodborne PS4 era comparable… just not what you expect. Exploration has been fun and combat is “fine” first boss fight was astonishingly easy. The lamp system is super cool and honestly I think they devoted so much time to that maybe some combat elements and polish got overlooked… not sure it deserves a 5. It’s about 7 or 7.5 for me so far

I’m about half way through now and I’ve really been enjoying the last couple of environments and the last two bosses have been dope. Especially the horse back boss in the woods. It’s a good game! Personally think it’s more unique and fun than Lies of P. Check it out and decide for yourself!

Really? I’ve beaten every soulsbourne game and Lords of the Fallen has been a nightmare for me. Running incredibly slow in performance mode, bad hit boxes, texture bugs. I already refunded my purchase.

You willnunderstand the reasoning for the 5 the more you play. I thought it was amazing in the beginning too, until it's glaring problems start to show up.
The first angel boss took me 20 trial to beat it was frustrating but that feeling oh man I haven't had that feeling since I play DS3 and thats is plus for me.
Yes I was surprised how tricky the first Boss was after all this talk of 'easy' bosses. But after 8-9 tries I had the Parrying down and the fight was just amazing.
@@lilramennoodle8056 That's interesting because Pieta took me 8-9 attempts which is more than 95% of Elden Ring bosses. I only recall 3-4 Elden Ring bosses taking me more than 10 attempts (I used no magic, no summons beyond a bit of Jellyfish dabbling early game).

I have been watching Lobosjr play (the parts of the game I already beat so as not to spoil anything) and its taking him multiple attempts to beat the bosses and he's dying multiple times throughout the levels. So if its not easy for a player as good as him (and not saying he's the best ever - just that he is way above average) you must be exceptional. Well done.
Fair review after almost finishing it, the most tedious game i have ever played. Too many enemies in to congested areas - given the enemies are not difficult there is just too many of them..guess the devs thought instead of 4 difficult enemies lets throw 25 easy ones at you and see how you like being mobbed and pushed of the ledge 100x times in a row. Umbral becomes just a annoying mechanic that could have been awsome that does not feel fluidly integrated into the game at all. Design is awsome though big probs who desinged the world and characters but thats the only praise i can give them. You will find me in Demon Souls for my 10th run again.

I think there’s around 30 bosses in this game and this video spoiled 5 or 6. It would have been nice if there was a disclaimer in the beginning but if the title doesn’t say “Spoiler-free” then I just assume it has spoilers now
this review is spot on. combat is fun, but HP pools are way too big, encounters have too many mobs, the level design is confusing because everything kind of looks the same and main paths are not well distinguished, and the umbral mechanic while interesting in spots just gets tedious to have to use all the time (not to mention having like 4 or 5 different ways to interact using the lamp gets confusing on its own if you just skim the tutorial or if you step away from the game for a while and try to return to it). Also a lot of the mob encounters have ranged enemies that seem to be able to rapid fire their crossbow at you with pretty good aim while you are stuck trying to take out an ex-boss enemy with a huge health pool for like 5 minutes trying to dodge spells or bolts the whole time and almost falling off a platform every time you dodge which is really more like a teleport given the distance you travel and by the way you can't run through to take out the crossbow guy first (which would be the smart strategic move) unless you are already in umbral because that bridge to him only shows up in umbral but if you're in umbral you're probably starting with wither damage so that 5 minute encounter becomes very precarious plus if you die you don't get that handy "resurrect in umbral" mechanic. It's just annoying. It makes the sort of methodical exploration you expect in from software game more tedious than anything else, and like the review said you often only find gear you can't use because of high stat requirements. Oh and I've been trying to summon for the entire 15 or so hours I've been playing so far and not had a single person join. Also tried to be a summon for someone else and nothing. It is better than the first LOTF, but that is a pretty low bar.
Bro as much as i hate to admit, but whatever he said is absolutely right. This game is so bad traversal design wise and lock on frustration. It’s like ur character is on skates and just jumps off the scaffolding’s or whatever ur standing on if u try to attack any enemy near a corner where you could fall off. And dodge roll covers way to much distance. Lock on is so frustrating that it will lock on to a far off enemy and you will swing ur sword in thin air which makes you vulnerable to nearby enemies. Navigation is so bad that it’s mind boggling. Actual combat is not hard even boss fight are pretty easy as compared to lies of p. This game is massive L in my opinion. Waited for this game for a long time. It’s just sad.
Beat the second boss last night. I can say that the game feels like it‘s lacks the final polish from a fromsoftware game. But it‘s great. Frustrating sometimes as well and the bosses like the second one took me a while to beat, so unlike reviews saying that the bosses are a walk in the park, is by no means true. And the beginning of the game can get confusing without all those different button combination you have to learn because of the lamp and stuff.
Gamespot seems to be capitalizing on being far more critical to a fault. This review didn't sound like a 5/10. This score seems stragely biased compared to others who acknowledge the faults but respect the game.

This was one of my most anticipated games of the year. This review is fair in my opinion. 5/10 is my score too. I've played the game for two days and its honestly a mess in so many ways. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The performance is also terrible but i wish that was the only problem, otherwise there would be hope for it to be fixed. Play lies of P instead of this. That game is twice the game this is and it's very smooth to play. It gives you a sense of satisfaction when you overcome challenge as oppose to lords of the fallen which is just tedious and unbalanced.
The game so far for me is mid. It's another Souls Like that is trying to be "hard" but it actually just ends up being tedious. Enemies and bosses do have way to much HP, even when pumping offensive stats and upgrading weapons as much as possible. It's a shame cause there is potential but it's so poorly balanced gameplay wise IMO.
This video just demostrate how much this guy hate soul's like games, where every other reviewer praised the level design and the low level dificulty barrier for new players, he just say otherwise, anyways, i will give it a try, the graphics looks pretty good and the game pretty solid for me.

Seriously, I know that every reviewer has their own perspective but watching this review after spending 14 hours total so far in the game myself, I am just baffled by this guys takes and conclusions. No, I have not beaten the final boss yet, but so far this is imho the best Soulslike not made by FromSoftware.
I will wait a year before playing that one, from all the reviews it is clear that the game has good potential but needs some polishing. I hope the devs look at all the complain from the community and make a great game from that one
I agree entirely this game is terrible a solid 5 or 5.5 i just got done playing it the levels all feel like no mans wharf and no one really loves the level from ds2 i understand the hype the last 2 bosses particularly were awful the animation for them was sad maybe im just spoiled from all the souls games but i found myself rolling past the last 30% of the game just to fight the bosses because i was not enjoying the game anymore

I agree with just about everything the reviewer states. Whether its a 5, 6 or 7 doesn't really matter. I don't think this game is worth your time. The atmosphere and world design is decent.. but everything else feels off. It plays like dark souls 2 but every enemy has a 360 hitbox attack, its just a matter of dodging at the right time and nothing else matters, that's why the combat feels so 1 note and stale. The weapon movesets have the same problem.. its just a detriment to use longer movesets for stagger when you learn to simply dodge out of every attack.
Fair review. I would rate it a bit higher just because I value good boss fights, but they do have too much health, and the levels themselves are a complete slog.
I'm loving this game so far. Hooked me in right away in a way that is rare for non-fromsoft games in the genre. I've played most of the major Souls like game, and this is right up there with Nioh and Lies of P for me. It is probably going to surpass them.

@@dankydoodle agree. The lock on is kinda broken. The levels in the mid to lategame kinda get better, but the bosses get worse. I think Calrath, the canalisation and the area leading to the tower were really good to explore imo.
-Terrible animations ,enemies with dagger have longer reach than you with a pole -Poise is a joke..an old man with staff can knock down a fully plated warrior? right... -To much bs, endless ganks, to many snipers hitting when you cant defend yourself like on ladders. I’ve been playing it for 10 hours and combat is still really lousy. Bad animations, input lag, terrible lock on system, etc. It gets better against bosses. If you keep on playing and get used to these shortcomings it becomes kind of fun, but the fist impression you get from the combat is terrible.
When everything largely looks the same with nothing interesting to look at, it is a bad thing. It's scaffolds, mushrooms, husks, and rocks as far as the eyes can see.
It’s an annoyance, I LOVE THE GAME!!! I’ve PLATINUMED: Sekiro, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 1-3, Lies of P and Armored Core….Thymesia, Steel Rising and others, so, I’m having a blast, even though it feels like I’m playing on PlayStation 2 and 35 hours in, the game crashed, reported and due to a corrupted save, my game started back at the 22 hour mark! A whole 13 hours of gameplay deleted, but I still have the Trophies 😭

It sounds like he doesn't play any souls like games. This game made me feel like I was playing dark souls 1 again, with all the intricate paths that reconnect to past areas. I personally have been loving this game. Definitely l take this gamespots reviews with a grain of salt.

That's something that only Lies of P, out of all the souls like games does it right, the sense of progression and reward mixed with great atmosphere and level design.
Lies of P is pretty linear but has better boss fight while the better level design is for this game, this reviewer is just bad by his footage he needs someone to tell him that the area he is going is over his level

It constantly challenges your patience with elite enemies and an heck'n slash number of regular enemies over and over again.
I didn't like the story and setting for Lie of P, it felt like a poor man's Bloodbourne.

Started it last night - it certainly lacks the polish of FromSoftware and really just makes you marvel at that studios work even more. Even the fidelity, while in game looks relatively good there are some odd low res textures here and there (on PS5) I was blown away at just how BAD the character creator assets looked… like Bloodborne PS4 era comparable… just not what you expect. Exploration has been fun and combat is “fine” first boss fight was astonishingly easy. The lamp system is super cool and honestly I think they devoted so much time to that maybe some combat elements and polish got overlooked… not sure it deserves a 5. It’s about 7 or 7.5 for me so far

I’m about half way through now and I’ve really been enjoying the last couple of environments and the last two bosses have been dope. Especially the horse back boss in the woods. It’s a good game! Personally think it’s more unique and fun than Lies of P. Check it out and decide for yourself!

Really? I’ve beaten every soulsbourne game and Lords of the Fallen has been a nightmare for me. Running incredibly slow in performance mode, bad hit boxes, texture bugs. I already refunded my purchase.

You willnunderstand the reasoning for the 5 the more you play. I thought it was amazing in the beginning too, until it's glaring problems start to show up.
The first angel boss took me 20 trial to beat it was frustrating but that feeling oh man I haven't had that feeling since I play DS3 and thats is plus for me.
Yes I was surprised how tricky the first Boss was after all this talk of 'easy' bosses. But after 8-9 tries I had the Parrying down and the fight was just amazing.

@@lilramennoodle8056 That's interesting because Pieta took me 8-9 attempts which is more than 95% of Elden Ring bosses. I only recall 3-4 Elden Ring bosses taking me more than 10 attempts (I used no magic, no summons beyond a bit of Jellyfish dabbling early game).

I have been watching Lobosjr play (the parts of the game I already beat so as not to spoil anything) and its taking him multiple attempts to beat the bosses and he's dying multiple times throughout the levels. So if its not easy for a player as good as him (and not saying he's the best ever - just that he is way above average) you must be exceptional. Well done.
Fair review after almost finishing it, the most tedious game i have ever played. Too many enemies in to congested areas - given the enemies are not difficult there is just too many of them..guess the devs thought instead of 4 difficult enemies lets throw 25 easy ones at you and see how you like being mobbed and pushed of the ledge 100x times in a row. Umbral becomes just a annoying mechanic that could have been awsome that does not feel fluidly integrated into the game at all. Design is awsome though big probs who desinged the world and characters but thats the only praise i can give them. You will find me in Demon Souls for my 10th run again.

I think there’s around 30 bosses in this game and this video spoiled 5 or 6. It would have been nice if there was a disclaimer in the beginning but if the title doesn’t say “Spoiler-free” then I just assume it has spoilers now
this review is spot on. combat is fun, but HP pools are way too big, encounters have too many mobs, the level design is confusing because everything kind of looks the same and main paths are not well distinguished, and the umbral mechanic while interesting in spots just gets tedious to have to use all the time (not to mention having like 4 or 5 different ways to interact using the lamp gets confusing on its own if you just skim the tutorial or if you step away from the game for a while and try to return to it). Also a lot of the mob encounters have ranged enemies that seem to be able to rapid fire their crossbow at you with pretty good aim while you are stuck trying to take out an ex-boss enemy with a huge health pool for like 5 minutes trying to dodge spells or bolts the whole time and almost falling off a platform every time you dodge which is really more like a teleport given the distance you travel and by the way you can't run through to take out the crossbow guy first (which would be the smart strategic move) unless you are already in umbral because that bridge to him only shows up in umbral but if you're in umbral you're probably starting with wither damage so that 5 minute encounter becomes very precarious plus if you die you don't get that handy "resurrect in umbral" mechanic. It's just annoying. It makes the sort of methodical exploration you expect in from software game more tedious than anything else, and like the review said you often only find gear you can't use because of high stat requirements. Oh and I've been trying to summon for the entire 15 or so hours I've been playing so far and not had a single person join. Also tried to be a summon for someone else and nothing. It is better than the first LOTF, but that is a pretty low bar.

Bro as much as i hate to admit, but whatever he said is absolutely right. This game is so bad traversal design wise and lock on frustration. It’s like ur character is on skates and just jumps off the scaffolding’s or whatever ur standing on if u try to attack any enemy near a corner where you could fall off. And dodge roll covers way to much distance. Lock on is so frustrating that it will lock on to a far off enemy and you will swing ur sword in thin air which makes you vulnerable to nearby enemies. Navigation is so bad that it’s mind boggling. Actual combat is not hard even boss fight are pretty easy as compared to lies of p. This game is massive L in my opinion. Waited for this game for a long time. It’s just sad.
Beat the second boss last night. I can say that the game feels like it‘s lacks the final polish from a fromsoftware game. But it‘s great. Frustrating sometimes as well and the bosses like the second one took me a while to beat, so unlike reviews saying that the bosses are a walk in the park, is by no means true. And the beginning of the game can get confusing without all those different button combination you have to learn because of the lamp and stuff.
The sheer number of abilities and button combinations does take a while to get the hang of. It seems daunting at first.
The bosses were very easy I never felt stuck on a boss only getting lost in the level they exist in
Gamespot seems to be capitalizing on being far more critical to a fault. This review didn't sound like a 5/10. This score seems stragely biased compared to others who acknowledge the faults but respect the game.

This was one of my most anticipated games of the year. This review is fair in my opinion. 5/10 is my score too. I've played the game for two days and its honestly a mess in so many ways. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The performance is also terrible but i wish that was the only problem, otherwise there would be hope for it to be fixed. Play lies of P instead of this. That game is twice the game this is and it's very smooth to play. It gives you a sense of satisfaction when you overcome challenge as oppose to lords of the fallen which is just tedious and unbalanced.
The game so far for me is mid. It's another Souls Like that is trying to be "hard" but it actually just ends up being tedious. Enemies and bosses do have way to much HP, even when pumping offensive stats and upgrading weapons as much as possible. It's a shame cause there is potential but it's so poorly balanced gameplay wise IMO.
This video just demostrate how much this guy hate soul's like games, where every other reviewer praised the level design and the low level dificulty barrier for new players, he just say otherwise, anyways, i will give it a try, the graphics looks pretty good and the game pretty solid for me.

Seriously, I know that every reviewer has their own perspective but watching this review after spending 14 hours total so far in the game myself, I am just baffled by this guys takes and conclusions. No, I have not beaten the final boss yet, but so far this is imho the best Soulslike not made by FromSoftware.
I will wait a year before playing that one, from all the reviews it is clear that the game has good potential but needs some polishing. I hope the devs look at all the complain from the community and make a great game from that one

I agree entirely this game is terrible a solid 5 or 5.5 i just got done playing it the levels all feel like no mans wharf and no one really loves the level from ds2 i understand the hype the last 2 bosses particularly were awful the animation for them was sad maybe im just spoiled from all the souls games but i found myself rolling past the last 30% of the game just to fight the bosses because i was not enjoying the game anymore

I agree with just about everything the reviewer states. Whether its a 5, 6 or 7 doesn't really matter. I don't think this game is worth your time. The atmosphere and world design is decent.. but everything else feels off. It plays like dark souls 2 but every enemy has a 360 hitbox attack, its just a matter of dodging at the right time and nothing else matters, that's why the combat feels so 1 note and stale. The weapon movesets have the same problem.. its just a detriment to use longer movesets for stagger when you learn to simply dodge out of every attack.
I will buy this once I have finished a few games I am getting through.

Fair review. I would rate it a bit higher just because I value good boss fights, but they do have too much health, and the levels themselves are a complete slog.
A lot of the boss fights just feel cheap with the gank aspect.
I just beat the 2nd boss. This game is a blast. Love the theme. Im enjoying it more than Lies of Your P-Organ which i also beat twice.
I'm loving this game so far. Hooked me in right away in a way that is rare for non-fromsoft games in the genre. I've played most of the major Souls like game, and this is right up there with Nioh and Lies of P for me. It is probably going to surpass them.

-Horrible maps chaotic mazes but not the smart mazes of nioh, only random chaos

-Bad sprint/jump/interact button mapping leading to jump when you don't want to if you want to loot something quickly

I’ve been playing it for 10 hours and combat is still really lousy. Bad animations, input lag, terrible lock on system, etc.
It gets better against bosses. If you keep on playing and get used to these shortcomings it becomes kind of fun, but the fist impression you get from the combat is terrible.

Sprawling level design is not a bad thing. It's exactly what Fromsoft is known for, it's what made Dark Souls 1 so good
Comparing this to Fromsofts level design is insulting.
When everything largely looks the same with nothing interesting to look at, it is a bad thing. It's scaffolds, mushrooms, husks, and rocks as far as the eyes can see.
Big is not the same as good. From soft levels are generally pretty well designed.
It’s an annoyance, I LOVE THE GAME!!! I’ve PLATINUMED: Sekiro, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 1-3, Lies of P and Armored Core….Thymesia, Steel Rising and others, so, I’m having a blast, even though it feels like I’m playing on PlayStation 2 and 35 hours in, the game crashed, reported and due to a corrupted save, my game started back at the 22 hour mark! A whole 13 hours of gameplay deleted, but I still have the Trophies 😭

Based on the Steam user reviews currently at 48/100 this seems accurate. Unless your IGN of course, who gave it an 8/10 while proclaiming that it has serious performance issues and poor level, enemy and boss designs.
I've played it for a few hours and it has potential. But it's not an 8. It needs a lot of balancing and patches to get up to an 8 in my opinion.

It sounds like he doesn't play any souls like games. This game made me feel like I was playing dark souls 1 again, with all the intricate paths that reconnect to past areas. I personally have been loving this game. Definitely l take this gamespots reviews with a grain of salt.

Naw, it's way more than that. It may have been 25 when they were created in 2020, but they've for sure got way more now.
