- Some Jerk With A Camera moderates a vigorous debate between two very special guests on the pros and cons of the recent changes to Pirates Of The Caribbean's infamous auction scene.

I like this change.
In France at Disneyland Paris Tiny is selling jewels and Red (in pirate outfit) is selling weapons.
So Pirates says : "we don't want the jewels, we want what selling the red head, yeah, we want the red head". It's a nice touch (and we have only one Johnny Depp in it).

The thing is, the pirates aboard the Wicked Wench (Should that get a name change too, given the context?) -- whether captained by Blackbeard or Barbossa -- are trying to not just shoot down & capture the garrison fort guarded by a limited number of bilingual soldiers, they're also trying to shoot at the small boats we as the riders who've stepped back into time are floating by in. Likewise, the drunken pirates shooting ammo in the room with all of the barrels of dynamite are so wasted that they don't care if they get blown up in a fiery explosion should any of the barrels accidentally get lit & blow the whole thing to kingdom come. Weirdly enough, when the ride was in operations during its original run before the 1997 updates, the fire in the burning city scene got too real because a small fire ended up singeing a bunch of the pirates costumes, prompting Disney to ask Marc Davis' wife & attraction costume designer if she could spend the time making extra costumes as the ride closed to fix things. However, Mrs. Davis had already wisely gone behind her corporate bosses' back & ordered twice the amount of the material needed for each costume, so she was able to make spare costumes for each pirate, so the ride was only down for a day.

The reason why he easily came off as one-dimensional was because the animators at the time faced difficulty on animating realistic male humans. He was originally going to have a bigger part in which Queen Grimmhilde would trap him and he'd eventually escape to rescue Snow White. That treatment was presumably repurposed for Prince Phillip by Maleficent and her goons in Sleeping Beauty.
Either way, Edgesword's argument is completely dated. Ever since The Beast (who's name was given Adam) came along, Disney became a lot better at making interesting animated princes.

This is one of those things where I was mad at first about the change, but I later accepted it like most changes Disney has made. Now, I really like Redd's new personality. Though, I wish they could still use the WE WANTS THE RED HEAD line in some way, but oh well. Also, poor Tiny. She's a character I didn't really think about, but after watching this, my perspective has now changed. Once day she'll get her chance (probably not, but maybe).
The only thing I wish is that it was a sex auction with Redd running it. That would be hilarious!

My headcannon: Redd was objectified all her life and was tired of it. When she heard that pirates were attacking her town, she decided to join the auction in order to get away. That’s why she looks happy to be there. Once she was with the pirates, she convinced them to make her a pirate too. Later she told the pirates to go back to the village because she new of all the riches and goods that were kept there, and they were to pillage them as per her revenge. So the two scenes were really just before and after.

Yeah, your interpretation seems accurate. Also I believe there has always been a painting of Redd as a pirate somewhere in the haunted Grotto which foreshadows what happened to her after the auction.

And by the time Beast came along, the princes did become more fleshed out and interesting.
And even on that note, Phillip and Eric had personality traits and Cinderella 3 managed to make Charming interesting. Florian is the only prince that could be made more intersting.
"A place that will never be complete" really is the "A rushed game is bad forever" of theme park quotes. It's not a hard-fast rule, but it's certainly what we all hope for when it comes to change or delayed satisfaction.

Honestly, I'm not really on either side. I think when Disney makes changes like these, it's lip service more than anything else, if they really wanted to prove their progressive cred, they'd pay their employees better.

Actually... Having thought about it, I kinda get why Walt felt the way he did when the malcontents started grumbling.
Think about it: the man grew up on a poor farm, worked his ass off to hone his craft, failed a few times at getting started, took several gambles that would've financially ruined him if they hadn't paid off, and after all that he ended up sitting atop an entire industry.
So when he told all those gathered workers, "If you want more, then just work harder and you'll get it," while that wasn't the best idea or the most effective remedy for the brewing workforce malcontent, I don't think Walt was entirely full of it when he said that. I think he was genuinely speaking from experience on what he felt was the path to success in life.
@@1krani But the problem with that is, he was wrong. Sure he worked hard, but he also had a LOT of lucky breaks along the way. Every successful person does. And there have always been millions of people who work equally hard, but don't have the same luck.
Walt's view of Pirates was clearly leaned to Robert Lewis Stevenson. That's not the view of Pirates anymore. Partly because of Pirates of the Caribbean. Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, or Black Sails. But a view of the classic Pirate trope isn't worthless.

Honestly, I'm still far more offended by them turning the ride into 'Jack Sparrow's Wild Ride' than I am by the new auction scene.
Eh, I don't mind it. I love the movies, so them trying to tie the ride into them is an alright idea. Maybe they should have been more subtle about though.

Thank you for also bringing up Tiny! She looks so sad in the new version. I liked her in the original where she's standing just as proud and as confident as the redhead. Personally, I never saw either as role models. I just thought Tiny was all like, "You know...I'm just as hot as this chick. I got this!" And I know fat-lady-played-up-as-joke can be seen as problematic, but everytime we pass that scene, my heart dies a little because she's no longer the proud Tiny, but a sad one. I'd be okay if they also converted her to a pirate. (note; speaking from the Disneyland Resort version)
I’ll admit... I mostly stand with the guy in pink on this one.
There was a time where Mickey Rooney with buck teeth was seen as a hilarious joke. But nowadays that is seems as an offensive stereotype that’s best put behind us.
In mediums like film or literature, they’re easily preserved, because there are multiple copies of them we can go back to and understand they’re part of the era they’re created.
But unless you’re talking coastal variants, there’s only 1 of a ride. We can’t have both the remake, and the original at the same time.
And if the remake is removing the things that made the original problematic, and overall is a better experience, I’d say all the better for it.
Edgy comedies and books work because they’re a relic of the time they’re created in, and that comes with the understanding that times have changed, and we can look back at those things as mistakes.
Rides don’t get that luxury. They’re here and now, being refurbished and easily updated, meaning they’ll always exist in the here and now, representing our standards here and now.
Ya, I’m glad they changed it. And I’m agree we should remove the headhunters on the Jungle Cruise for similar reasons. (The tiki room chanting is more debatable, as that can be seen as more an actual symbol of the culture instead of just an offensive stereotype)

the question ultimately goes down to "Who has the right to determine what direction society goes in to." No matter which side is chosen you can't really expect the other 49% (Or whatever the minority percentage is) to just go quietly into the night. No matter which side wins no one is going to really care about this 200-300 years from now as it's only going to be words on the thesis of some sociology proffeser looking to make tenor. Ultimately the best thing would be for both sides to just ignore each other till one of them dies out and goes extinct like a genus of anmil, but this is the internet
As far as my realistic expectations *Sigh* might makes right. People prefer the illusion of freedom as opposed to actual freedom, and your views are only as valid as your might and will to enforce them and your ability to keep them from being changed or challenged. The corporations such as disney and google seem to have this down to a science. It's a sad reality, but i believe it to be reality none the less. I think the only reason we don't live in a state of constant anarchy is because most are apathetic. People love to complain, but once their two minutes of hat are out of their system they go about their mediocre lives until the next thing to offend them comes around. Me I'm an old soul, I find progress to be vanity. I romanticize the days of yore in my head, and I will never be content in a progressive society that in itself seems content in chasing a tire.
I think captain Redd is a nice edition to the parks. As a male it was always hard to explain the situation with the old redhead and why she’s being sold, especially explaining it to little girls. However there is a lot to be improved. I think the real crime is the new corny dialogue of the auctioneer and the treatment of tiny. Can’t we all just talk about the new dole whip flavors.

I'm someone who was torn about it in three ways to be honest.
The cynical side of me wanted to remain the same, after all it's a very iconic scene that a lot people loved and quoted. And sure it's it's a bit uncomfortable, but hey pirates were criminal.
The optimistic side of me thought it as cool idea, I mean not all girls like the Princesses, some of them are tomboys, and having a kick-butt lady pirate show them that you don't have to be a princess to be awesome was really great...
The fanfic crossover writing side of me had this thought process "They turned the red head into a pirate? A pirate who's clearly a thief... They ripped off Nami! There's only one way to settle this! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! East VS. West! Grand Line VS. Caribbean! Univeral VS. Disney! (Not a joke, Universal does do theme park stuff involving One Piece in Japan) These two need to fight! And there's only way to settle it! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!"

Anyways like you said it's complicated matter where both sides has a point... so yeah, I do agree with that.
That's pretty much my thoughts.
Ever since I was a little girl I wasn't bothered by the auction scene. In fact I thought it enchanted the genius of the ride.
I always perceived the ride as an cautionary tale towards young boys who wanted to be pirates. We see what a pirates life is really like. One of the first things we see in the ride is a pirate skeleton surrounded by all the treasure but with no one to share it with. To make it any more sad, towards the end of the ride we see that they put an entire town on fire, and ride cannons while trying to shoot each other all because they were drunk.
I say as long as it shows how not only evil, but also how (In reality) pathetic losers the pirates were, they should keep it in.
And that's why I had a respect for it. I like the idea of pirate women as well, but it had no business being in this ride. They, originally, didn't sugarcoat it like so many people did then and now. Also I found Red to be pretty and kinda sassy, almost like she's playing it up. I headcanon that she became the "Pirate Queen" in that portrait with the cherub pouring her wine.

This is really fucking well done, and as a fellow fan of inappropriate humor, nostalgia, progressiveness, and not being an asshole, I find I can relate on multiple levels.

I'm very much in the same boat as you. There are a lot of transgressive messages in pirates that don't align with modern values, but also I'm keenly aware that these are pirates and not supposed to be role models (if anything, I'm more bothered by this tendency as of late to try and push pirates AS role models -- it's really weird.....)
I'll probably always prefer the original deep down, but I'm not gonna say that it wasn't a little cringy, and to some extent still is. But in the end, it's a Disney ride and the imagineers will change it as they see fit, Jack Sparrow animatronics and all.
Yea, I'm on both sides too. I felt sad because yet another element of the original Pirates ride was removed, but when I rode the ride after the scene was updated, I really liked Redd. I liked her spunky attitude, I liked that she wasn't just a smiling face, I'd like to see more of her.
Nothing will ever annoy me more than adding Jack Sparrow to the ride when he wasn't needed.

I love this video, you represented both sides super fairly. I am someone who rode the original ride and the updated ride, I love the original ride and my only true issue with the new ride is truly the addition of Jack Sparrow, it super annoying.

Regarding that Frank Miller joke, I admit I absolutely hate the man he is now, thanks to his misogyny, homophobia, and his islamophobia being way more in the open than before, but back then, he was a master.
He didn’t make comics dark for the sake of it; he merely went a different direction that gave Batman a unique twist at the time. Heck, the earlier Batman stories were arguably more for adults, so he was bringing it to that level. The stories Miller wrote were smart, insightful, and had tons to say about society, unlike many who try to copy him (looking at you, Zack Snyder). He’s become a parody of himself and his writing has degraded but I will always cherish his earlier work. This applies to Alan Moore, too, except in his case, he just got weirder as opposed to being disgusting and he’s still a good writer.
That doesn’t mean I don’t love the campy Adam West show. That was very faithful to the comics at that time. Both eras can co-exist. It’s up to the comic fans to realize this and not just lose their minds when something they like has a different tone compared what they wanted.

I'm going to be honest, I thought there was no hope for this video after I saw Haley Callahan's insanely good one. It was just fabulous. And I honestly thought that no matter how hard you tried, you couldn't compete.
Yeah I was wrong. And thankfully, this was good in a different way, so I didn't have to feel like I needed to compare the two or decide which one I preferred. Yay!
I don’t think y’all appreciate how much time Tony spends on these videos. Finding the visual and audio clips, filming himself as three different characters, the editing so it looks seamless...he doesn’t have to do this for us. But he does. I can understand the struggle to appease a hardcore fan base, trying to improve on things, receiving positive/negative criticism, and becoming more inclusive to a general public. While I certainly wouldn't want to be in those people's shoes, I find it's best to acknowledge all of these factors and understand that you won't make everyone happy. At the end of the day, you gotta do what you think is best.
Disney should take the Pirates movies in an anthology direction, with new stories and characters with each movie.

So am I, and I’m only 18. Even now I still try to consider both sides on any issue.

That show is really underrated.
It's a shame I only got into the show after it's ended, it's pretty good. The first few episodes were a bit fast, but you get used to it before the show slows down.

The first time I rode Pirates Of The Caribbean was circa 2004-2005, I was a little Aussie tourist with no clue the auction scene was coming, so imagine how horrified foreigners whose first taste of Disneyland proper contains human trafficking without warning or indication you're in for worse than spooky skeletons around the corner.
Watched this for a third time... again I feel this is one of your best episodes Tony, well done... quick question... if there was something you could change about Pirates of the Caribbean, what would it be? (Outside of jack sparrow... we know we’d all take him out nowadays)
Not only would I remove Jack, I'd restore a lot of the pre-Jack dialogue from BEFORE the other characters couldn't shut the hell up about him.

I think a lot of backlash for the change just comes from the barrage of changes the ride keeps on getting over the years. From the food "chase" change ( Which makes no damn sense) to the literal Jack-apocalypse I'd be sensitive to changes too. This compared to the mansion which is everyone's darling and only seems to get improvements (depending on you're stance on CG hitchhikers) pirates fans sometimes feel the need to fight tooth and nail for their favorite ride. That being said the change was well done and wasn't nearly pointless like food chasers or as intrusive as Jack.

Last night in Barnes and Noble, I read in the latest edition of the Unofficial Disney World Guide (the really, really thick one) that they're considering making a movie centered around Redd as the heroine...and rumor has it that they'd like Karen Gillan (you know...Amy Pond) to play her.
I heard that too. I'm all for it. Personally I think it'd be cool to open the film with the ride's old auction scene and close it with the ride's new auction scene, and the movie tells the story of how she got from Point A to Point B.

Yeah I kind of feel ya here. I am a pretty progressive individual, but there’s been several times where I get annoyed by those who I otherwise agree with getting a little too passionate about being angry at a piece of media where I similar want to shout “you’re not supposed to like it!”. Personally I prefer the badass Red ,but wasn’t that bothered by the Wench auction if still feeling pretty “yeesh” after I first actively noticed it (didn’t bat an eye when I rode the original version)
To be honest I agree with you on this. I've been torn on how to feel about the changes to Pirates ever sense they went in. I enjoy both versions, but have issues with both so I still don't know how to feel about it. I do feel that you represented both arguments very well and made clear each of their detractors and benefits.

I've only ever ridden pirates once a few years ago at magic kingdom before the change, but I will say, just from the scenes I've seen here...

Well that was informative! The first time I saw footage of the update was the Disneyland Paris version and that one was slightly different.
In that one Tiny is in the same cheery pose as before, but she is wearing all the swindled jewels and pearls she can. I’m pretty sure she’s one of the pirates now, but I don’t understand French!
I hope they can bring that to the states because she looks so sad now.
The hilarious thing about this review is that both of your comedy stereotypes are still written by you- and therefore much more articulated and subtle than the real deal.
I really appreciate the effort you put into these videos Tony. At the end I'm left with a lot of feelings, the strongest among them is that I'm not sure how Poochy would have felt or reacted to many of the scenes and opinions displayed.

So happy that this finally arrived. Been waiting for many months to finally see this finished video, undoubtedly alongside many many others. You know, a part of me wants to be frustrated with the amount of time it takes to get a new video from you, but I never can, since I just enjoy the quality of your content so damn much. In other words, great job! You've exceeded my expectations with this one, I must say.
This is a Great video that really captures how I think a lot of us felt about the changes. Although I ultimately think it was for the best, I understand and appreciate transgressive art and do feel that we don’t have that in the Disney parks. Part of me was sad to see that element go for pirates but I’m glad we at least get to have one kick ass female pirate. (Although ya it dose suck how tiny can’t be a pirate as well seems like it would have been easy enough to make her one to). Having the dueling personas was super funny and an interesting change of pace that worked really well. Keep up the great work and I’ll be looking forward to the next video. #TeamTryhard

Out of curiosity, let's say they did eventually decide to make Tiny a pirate, maybe as Red's first mate or something. Who do you think should voice her? I have two ideas:
1. Mae Whitman: You already have Azula playing Red in this ride that features burning a town while singing a ditty. Might as well bring the waterbender into this water ride while we're at it.
Michaela Dietz: She and Grey already had cute chemistry in The Owl House. Why not?

Unrelated note, but it just occurred to me, after YOLO became a thing, I wonder if Disney ever considered doing Pirates merch with the phrase YOHO plastered all over it. Or maybe they did and I missed it.
For me personally, I've always liked the ride but its never been one of my all time favorites, (I always tried to avoid it as a kid because I was scared of the drop at the start.) So honestly I'm not bothered by it changing and I appreciate the fact that they keep finding ways to freshen it up. Plus she's voiced by freakin' Azula, who doesn't love that?
I feel like that YOLO/YOHO thing MUST have happened at some point. If not, missed opportunity.
First off, great video. Was able to giggle a little at my cubicle at work which I needed. Having said that, the last time I was at Disneyland was 1995, though I did go to the Magic Kingdom version about a decade ago. Great points in general. Well damn...you know, I never thought I'd say this, but I understand the other side of this argument a lot better now. I was really stoked about the change and rolled my eyes at people who took issue with it...but you made a lot of good points for that side. It's a shame the most extreme sides of any argument get the most attention, we'd be able to understand one another better if they didn't. You're doing the Internet a real service with videos like this.
What a fascinating, multi-faceted issue that can be used as a jumping off point for discussing the way changing times and the emergence of previously marginalized voices can effect transient media like theme park attractions and how changes to said transient media have a give and take not present in media more set in stone like film, television, or books. I should say something interesting and insightful.

Honestly keeping both the old and new I would like. I feel the wench bidding isn't meant to be taken to the extreme but I would have liked it if she was a pirate in the end, but bidded on first. Also your humor is gold.

Pirate Tony brought up some great points, especially about Tiny. If you are going to make it progressive, why not go all the way? I don’t think the scene was done well. If they had to change it, they could have done it a lot better.
I think the biggest blow of losing the original scene is the dialogue. Paul Frees Voice was iconic.

Just my two cents, they probably could have changed the redhead to be one of the pirates, possibly even as the auctioneer, and still kept the scene mostly the same. And even keep the “we want the redhead” line with a smart ass retort from Redd after firing her flintlock in the general direction of the pirates saying the line.
I can’t wait to see what Tony has to say about Splash Mountain being replaced by Princess and the frog. I have never seen the Disney fans so mad. Personally I love the change but I cannot wait to see what Tony has in store.

We were there at Disneyland on the day when Pirates reopened with the new changes. Pirates of the Caribbean is one of our favorite rides and we understand why the change happened. Personally, we find it really cool to have Redd be a pirate, especially when meeting her at the park. Will we will miss the original scene? Yes, even though the dialogue is not as good as the original. The new transition scene and return of the original audio was definitely a surprise for us and we really enjoyed it. Overall, it was a bit of a hit and miss, but we still like the change. Fantastic job on the video and addressing this issue. 2 thumbs up! 😃👍👍✨
