I really think that this ride is superior to Tower of Terror for one simple reason: they're actually creative with the drops. In Tower, you just sort of drop with nothing other than the picture and people's screams to see or hear. In Guardians, they really go all out. For example, I'm just going to list a bunch of instances where the ride uses the drops for more than just the fun factor.
1. When Rocket tries to think up a plan, and the gantry falls calling people to scream, which he scolds as they made him lose his train of thought.
2. Rocket curiously presses a button, and then gets electrocuted with the gantry falling shortly after.
3. The gantry stalls, causing Rocket to ask the audience for tape in a nice call back.
4. A blue light turns on, causing Rocket to rejoice as he thought that he fixed it. However, the light turns red and the gantry plummets, with Rocket saying that he was simply joking.
5. The gravity tinkering in the Free Ride segment.
6. Rocket gets frustrated because he wants the gantry to go higher, until the gantry goes too high and your picture is taken.
7. Rocket hits a button and the red light once again flashes, as Rocket tells the guests to hold on.
While this might seem trivial, it's a nice way of making the drops all the funnier, and also the ride more fun as a whole.
This video confirms my suspicions that Tony's entire wardrobe consists of only Black Button Up shirts, and one sweater so he can pretend to be other people.
It's so I don't have to waste precious mental energy deciding what to wear.

May I just say THANK YOU for not going over board with the sadness of loosing the Tower of Terror. Most vides and people I have talk to spend a long time complaining about how that "got ride of a classic ride for a cheep cash in".
Guardians of the Ghost Galaxy sounds like an amazing rollercoaster.
It would be sort of funny in an enraging way if Florida ended up getting a worse version of this ride.

I'm usually one of the biggest theming nerds around, but the reason this doesn't bug me is because the theming of the ride itself is just so fantastic. So what if it doesn't fit with Hollywoodland? The micro world of the building itself is so masterfully created that I don't give a shit about the world outside of it. I love Rocket's paw prints showing evidence of his escape and vandalism. I love the Marvel artifacts in the main lobby. I love Tivan's office, I LOVE the new boiler room, and I love that Guardians music plays when you get off the ride and Tivan interjects every now and then to command his staff to "turn this noise off". It's just done so well that I personally don't care about whether or not it fits in Hollywoodland. It's just so well made that it conveys to me they worked their asses off to make the ride itself work.

Yeah, I also do not enjoy jumpscares, that's literally every nightmare I ever have is something jumping into my face and it's the worst, used to have those on a weekly basis as a kid
If they were to do this layout for Hollywood Studios I would EASILY ride it, and it sucks cause I am at least a fan of twilight zone the show! But my fan-ness doesn't outweigh the inert fear the ride brings.
The longer video with the gradual progression of the ride closing, final day to ride it, construction and opening day were just great. I hope you might do this for more things like Super Nintendo World maybe.

Great review! I myself have been on it 8 times and I got all of the songs except for We Want the Funk. I personally agree with you that Free Ride is the best version of the attraction. The team and I recently did a review of this ride as well and I am glad to see that you guys enjoyed the ride as well. Can't wait to see more videos from you guys! 😃

Full disclosure Tony: I have not had the opportunity of riding Mission Breakout since it converted from Tower of Terror, and I think you may have convinced me to (You and my Wife that is). I was very distraught when I heard they were changing the Tower especially since to me, it felt like they were destroying the sight line with an uglier building, but I have heard a lot of great things about it. I was very skeptical of course, because like you, I too felt like a Creepy Ride felt more appropriate there than a Comedic one. I do love the Guardians though, and after riding Cosmic Rewind, and watching this review, I think I'll check it out the next time I'm in DCA. Thank you my Friend
This is random but I've been watching your videos for years and one of the things I like about your style is your use of classic songs in your videos. You should do a video about your favorite music or release a list and/or playlist of your favorite music of all time. I know that takes a lot and is hard but I'm very interested.

I finally got to ride this on a trip, and it was AWESOME! I got to ride it 5 times, and in 5 or so years when I get to go back, I'll ride it as many times as I can.

I have a feeling the person who voices Groot (in Mission: Breakout) is really Tim Allen so he can make-up for both Buzz Lightyear rides. And if Randy Moore ever makes a sequel to Escape From Tomorrow where this ride is included and Jim's original family shows up somehow, we can prove this theory by seeing if Elliott has an irrational fear of this ride and Midway Mania due to the fact that he has a fear of Tim Allen, and Space Ranger Spin and/or Astro Blasters is his only escape from a reality where he refuses to accept the fact that Tim Allen will do anything Toy Story related, with the exception of those 2 rides that he had no involvement with.

Nice, even thought we only saw Mr. Goldmark and company waiting in a queue. i couldn't help but notice that when Mr. G and Company sang "We'll Meet Again" as a farewell to the Tower of Terror, only Goldmark could sing more than the first line. For whatever holiday gifts he gives these people, he should include a DVD of Dr. Strangelove.
I'm guessing the Halloween overlay for Mission: Breakout will be called Guardians of the Galaxy - Spooky BREAKOUT!

Finally rode it. We got the same first song (Burnin Love), but of the two times I rode I got that both times. That said, I got to switch to the front row for my second ride, and that enhanced the experience significantly.

Tony, excellent observation on the music editing. Most of these classics do follow the same format and for many people they are mainly about the chorus and the solos. Its pretty clever and something I didn't really think about. But that's a smart move which tells me that the music is being respected as music more than usual here. Not even the Aerosmith's Cokescrew does that and they're goddamn musicians. The west coast Tower was fun but without the fifth dimension room it was always just short of being just another drop ride. Now it seems to be embracing the fun factor and the story potential of the ride system itself - probably more so than Tower of Terror on either coast.

I'm not a big fan of drop rides so I never went on Tower, but I love Guardians of the Galaxy so I actually want to the ride it now.

Are people still complaining, or have people finally accepted it?
There will always be a small contingent of TOT purists, but from what I could tell, for the most part people largely seem to have finally accepted it, especially after actually riding the damn thing. And not a moment too soon.
Need to find time to make a visit to DCA. Still debating if I should wait until the end of the summer season or the start of the fall season.
Also need to check the re-opened stuff on Frontierland...

OMG! I had a similar experience like that one last time I rode TOT. There were these girls who were screaming right next to me and it was rather annoying (I think my left ear was a bit numb after that). But at least they apologized.
Anyway, really enjoyed hearing your thoughts, was quite surprised with some of the opinions. I'm hopefully looking forward to riding this with my friend in mid-August (surprisingly she had the same problems with TOT that Spazz had, but she is interested in riding Mission Breakout).
BTW: My theory is that either Disney realized Vin Diesel was already on a Universal owned attraction and that's why they didn't get him, or it could be Disney's history of not having all the original actors reprise their roles for rides (i.e. Toy Story Mania, It's Tough to be a Bug, etc.)

I think what would have been cool to have as an homage to Tower of Terror, would be if The Collector had the victims [from the show that played before the ride] of the first elevator incident on display.

That guy at 14:03 I think I recognize him from when I went on the ride as one of the guys running the ride. It might not have been him but one of the cast members roasted me for wearing sunglasses the third time I rode the ride that day (hey I don't live in California and who knows when I'll ever go back so I went on the ride 3 times). He pulled a pair of shades out of his own pocket, put them on and said "how can you even see in these?"
Unless you went on the pre-opening media day, I don't think Ian was working there. He usually works at Star Tours.

Curiously, I Want You Back was the first song I got when I rode it for the first time. I've been 5 times sans FastPasses, because I am nuts.
I spoke to Joe rhode when I was working at Disney World, I was a little nervous but my friend complained about rivers of light being delayed and I nearly died
Should I watch the video now or save it until I get some homework done? On one hand, all of Tony's content is wonderful. On the other hand, I can use this as a motivational tool for getting work done quickly and efficiently.

legit question, do you think on rides like these they make certain films rare? like, certain outcomes have a much lower chance then others for the specific purpose of "re-ridability" for people who want to experience every outcome

In a way, but here you get one of six different experiences each time. On Star Tours, there's at least 96 different possible combinations of experiences.
