I’m 36 and I remember watching this at 9 years old with my dad. Pastors and Christian family - still to this day, one movie I still watch looking over my shoulder.
I always find it interesting how very modern this film still feels because our reliance and worship of the medical, the psychological has actually increased from the year it was released instead of decreasing. Glad to see a shared view on that side of things, I write about it often.
I watched it alone and it honestly scared me into attending Church that week, after skipping the previous few years. The film certainly has heavy Christian themes.
Wonderful review and explanation from the Christian point of view. Regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, but this subtext makes it even more so.
8:50 / I don't believe the demon was "unearthed". It was meant to be (as is elements in the Iraq epilogue) foreshadowing that Merrin will face evil. Pazuzu arriving in Georgetown is more random than it having to do with the Pazuzu pendant being sent to a nearby museum.
That was a really good explanation. I definitely see more in the movie than I did before. You know the boy that the movie was based on recently passed away, and they revealed his name finally. The priest had always kept contact with him over many years, even though he otherwise remained anonymous. Do you have any thoughts on the Exorcism of Emily Rose? It was based on a case of exorcism in Germany.
I didn't know about the boy who the movie was based on. That's interesting! I've never seen the Exorcism of Emily Rose. Is worth watching? What are your thoughts on it?
@@jackshannon777 I enjoyed it. It's less subtextual you could say than the Exorcist, but it's well put together, and communicates a few challenging points about faith. The historical exorcism it was based on was itself controversial, and the woman's grave has become a pilgrimage site.
That movie horrified me as a kid. I've never seen the special director's cut that came out in 2000. Being a non practicing Catholic I still cannot watch it.
I wasn't allowed to watch horror movies as a child. I think it's wise to be highly selective with what children watch, and would counsel any parent not to permit their child to watch any horror movies. I can imagine the movie would have been terrifying to watch as a kid. I didn't start watching horror movies until I was in my 30's, ha! And I'm still not a fan of the genre generally. But there are select few that I have found to be good.
As some have said, this is JUST a movie: As a Catholic I feel all the fear-based "moralist theology" about the movie has only served to further mock the Catholic religion. I feel that this priest's review of the movie is heavily biased by his own "traditional", indoctrinated beliefs about family values, science/medicine and "modern women" (as if being an independent, strong woman is a "moral failing" or more likely a "threat") and does not represent the reality of various family situations. The age-old belief that a strong father figure is needed for a healthy family isn't always accurate; a healthy family dynamic starts with healthy parenting skills whether a father is present or not.
Yes. Without the benefit of history and hindsight, we wouldn't know any better and assume that a father and mother present is always what's best for the child. It's just not realistic to think that times like the 1950's and earlier was so much better in raising children. We still see the scars today from those eras. Still dealing with the after effects of "father/husband/man knows best" and being the leader of the family. Patriarchy, basically. I believe that these types of issues/opinions will eventually even out in the future to a place that is best for everyone concerned and not relegating roles to each person.
That’s what you got out of it? I take it. You’re a single mother and I am too and I don’t take offense to it. I wish my children’s father was a good father, but he’s a horrible father and human being and it does have a profound effect on my son, God intended for a man and a woman the man is missing of course the family unit is hard. He isn’t saying that the whole movie is based on her being a single mother. You just took that particular line and made it about yourself.
A single mother is in "error" for doing her best to raise her kid on her own? I'm *not* saying kids don't need two parents, in a healthy relationship based on love. However, that "error" commentary sounds really one-sided and presumptive. As if it's impossible for the father to be at fault. The kid's father in this movie has no real screen time in this movie, and thus, we only have a keyhole perspective of what lead to their separation. Does that demonstrate how fragile a single parent family can be, compared to a family with two parents? Sure. Are there some fathers out there in the real world that are so bad, they need to removed from the family situation before they make things worse? Sadly, yes. Also, I see (in your brief Halloween montage) you don't like witches. Does that mean you like what the church did to witches during the Inquisition?

The unearthed demon was Pazuzzu, the Chaldean demon of the southwest wind- which brought super-heated winds from Arabia. It was hung in windows facing this direction to drive away demons of pestilence. This is why Fr. Merrin looks at the small amulet and says, "Evil against evil."
The exorcism of Roland Doe... what the Exorcist was based on, most true story. The Exorcist actually happened to a boy in Maryland. Please just do your research. 💯
@@nativeatheist6422 No harm done... There's a many movies on exorcism, all of which my pastor-in-Spirit (RIEP) thoroughly researched. He said that he himself believed the best movies about exorcism were "The Exorcism of Roland Doe" (The movie The Exorcist was based on, the true story), "The Devil and Father Amorth" and there's also "The Pope's Exorcist"... But if them two don't make a believer-in-exorcism out of you, I don't think nothing would! I also hear of "The Pope's Exorcist", another one I hear worth watching but they warn you "Watch at your own risk" And I see just now scrolling through, there's another movie that came out this year called "The Exorcism", UGH, so many are trying their best to re-create the original 1973 Exorcist but it just ain't gonna be happening!!! However, I hear a lot of people like "The Exorcist III" out of them ALL and there's about 9 or 10 of them, this was the movie that showed the continuance of Father Karras, they'd like you to believe he DIED after falling down the stairs in the Exorcist but he didn't, he later turned up in the Exorcist 3 in a mental institution. In my personal opinion I don't think ANY of the Exorcist movies can top the 1973 original version. I also heard the one that recently came out "The Exorcist: Believer" was a total flop and there were supposed two more sequels to follow but I think the guy that created them gave it up. So sorry so long, just wanted to inform you! 😂🤣😁
@@LadyHavana74 Yea about that. The exorcism may have happened - but the boy was never possessed. Nothing was documented or fact checked - most is hearsay and full of errors. Allegedly the most "supernatural" thing that happened during the exorcism was that the boys mattress was "shaking". It is only an example of overly superstitious and religious people trying to fix things - where the proper solution would have been psychiatry.
Did you really come into a video of a priest, in the channel of a church, and pull a 2010's "god not real" like some lost redditor? And you people claim atheism isn't a religion.

Excellent video. I’ve studied this film intensely but I learned a few themes here from you.

100%
It was a portent, an omen. And one that the character understands long before we do.
Yes, it was just a sign for Merrin that there was going to be a rematch. He then just has to wait to find out the where and when.
Father,
You skipped an important moment in the film. When Karros says that there are at least three- “there’s only one,” says Father Martin.
