Rest in Peace, William Freidkin. Thank you so much for creating a movie that will last for generations to come! That 50 years later, it's STILL the best example of what a horror movie should be. From the script to the acting to the cinematography to of course, the Directing! This movie was traumatizing when I saw it on the tele as a kid back in the 80's. And as an adult, it is my favorite horror movie to watch, alone or with friends/family, in the dark. I have analyzed it. I know the script. I just adore this movie. And it's the standard for what I base every other horror movie too. If it doesn't evoke the feelings and intense emotions like The Exorcist, then it's almost pointless. I know there are other credible films. But, as an actor and writer, this one is just on a level of its own. I'm forever grateful!!!
I have mentioned this before . My girlfriend and I were in a long queue outside our cinema and priests were asking cinema fans not to watch the Exorcist , that's how seriously it was rated. We were asked to give a critique by a local newspaper on exiting the cinema . It was ground breaking stuff at the time.

When I think of these films from the 70's or even 80's it has something that many... MANY movies nowadays don't bother, whether willingly or out of lack of understanding : "Establishing a mood, an atmosphere." The most impactfull thing a movie wishes to have.
I feel the same, but i think its the network era we are living now, in the 70's we didnt have any Idea How they made those special fx, and things looked so real and terrifying which brought a creepy and menace atmosphere to these horror movies.
The conversation between the two exhausted priests is absolutely essential. It makes perfect sense against the background of intolerable confusion. It, in essence and in it's simplicity, is the beginning of the demon's defeat.
I am 17 now... when I was 10, somebody tricked me into playing the scary maze game. That image of Regan’s face haunts me to this day. There have been nights in the past where I haven’t been able to sleep.
Greatest horror movie ever! I was 16 years old, underaged of course, my buddies and me went to the theatre hoping to get in to see the film. I remember the big lineup at the ticket booth, the lady was so overwhelmed she didn't even look up to see who was buying a ticket! So we got in to see the film, afterwards, walking home, we kept looking behind us cuz we were all scared shitless!
The speech about despair on the stairway is a powerful moment. I can perfectly understand why Peter Blatty was dissapointed William had cut it out of the original Cut. I didn't even know it was not included in the theatrical version but knowing this now, i would react the same way. One of the best scenes in the film. It needed to be put back. I Like the final cut of the film a lot more.
In the novel when Father Karras and Merrin were talking on the steps,Regan was singing a song,I think it might of been a church choir song ,I seen an outtake of it on TH-cam,I remember when I read that part of the novel I got goosebumps just thinking how haunting that must of sounded ,a beautiful song coming out of that Monster
@spartan2188 The original cut is the masterpiece. The extended added scenes that slow the film down and don't add much. Except for the stairway scene, everything else doesn't work. The long doctors scenes, the silly superimposed demon faces everywhere, the upbeat ending, even the spiderwalk, don't need it.

Alternate versions are very interesting - but the original theatrical version still rules. The editing and pacing of the original version is a big part of what makes this film such a masterpiece. And its not just that it's 'horror' film - or the 'scariest' movie ever - its an all-time great film for ANY genre. It was nominated in most major categories for Academy Awards - but won only best screenplay and best sound. It should have won best picture.
I don't know about best picture, BUT consider the fact that it's the one film from 1973, other than Scorsese's "Means Streets," that film critics and fans still talk about! I mean, who even remembers "The Sting"???
Agreed! How did the STING beat this for Best Picture in 1973? Do you hear anyone discussing that movie still today?😂 I think the Academy feared awarding a film like this with more accolades, despite Friedkin’s best efforts to rise it above ‘horror schlock’ and give it credibility on the level of The Godfather. The STING was the safest bet for them still feeling they awarded a movie of ‘high prestige’, Best Picture. That thinking continued until Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs broke through for Best Picture!
I grew up thinking the 2000 version was the only version. Now that I own the 40th anniversary bluray I have now seen the theatrical cut as well. I am a big believer in your first instinct is right, so I think the theatrical cut will be my go to.
It’s a piece of art , I adore each version ; the digital version is incredible it brings it back to life ... I prefer the part of the two priests on the stairs discussing why , I think it’s incredibly powerful

Karras says the line when he’s giving mass that there is somewhat a ‘mystery of faith’, which is very true. And the subliminal projections of the demon Pazzuzu on kitchen appliances and on curtains are just AWEFUL!😕👎🏾

I've seen many films about possession and exorcism and I wouldn't say that these other movies came close to The Exorcist, but just that I've found them very interesting and that I've enjoyed to watch : The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Last Exorcism.

Because tv was the time families spent the most time together like a fire place lol but now in times of mobile, tablets everyone probably in different rooms just ain’t the same. I remember being very young and when Xmas came round you knew a lot of great movies were going to be on tv all day long, same at Halloween and other holidays and because there wasn’t hundreds of channels everyone was watching and we all would talk about it at school etc It may just be nostalgia but honestly there was a magic in having less back then with regards to how we consume media. If anything all these media options seem to be more lonely.
I appreciate BOTH Blatty And Friedkin’s takes on how the omitted scenes impacted being in the film and Not being in the film. Ultimately it’s Blattys novel and his writing was genius, especially in the stairwell scene. But Friedkins reasons for omitting it, we’re valid too, as the film is what it is. Though, I can kinda respect Blattys view a bit more as, especially the stairwell scene, that scene among the others, could have definitely added to the dread of the film, in a great way, staircase AND stairwell scene. 💯.
Friedkin references the sound effects - the most effective elements of the film are not the visuals but the sounds. One example: they recorded the noise of hundreds of bees in a jar, then re-mixed and amplified the sound so that it became a "super-buzz", then played it both audibly at an almost sub-audible level at different points. The sound incites panic in people, even when they have no memory of having specifically heard it before.
Linda Blair as a 13 yr old behaved so professionally and with so much strength of character, it's terrible that she suffered a spinal fracture. She's a lovely person and saves so many animals.
A masterpiece, the casting was incredible and so was everything else, I will be watching it today for the first time in about 25 years, I hope I have the version with the additions, they were really well done
Scared me "to this day". I too went to see it in 1973. My oldest brother took me (he gives me a little pill, prior to going in, bad move)!! That movie scared me "shitless". I worked about 3-4 blocks away from the house it was filmed in. I had a terrible experience -- I've had to move, I couldn't stay in my apartment alone, when I went to mass on Sunday's I could sense me mumbling something -- to make a longer story Short -- the Exorcist was the most frightening movie for me!!!😢😢😢
The beauty of the audiences reactions, them feeling shaken and scared, is due to the fact that there was no horror movie like this at the time. The Exorcist was the first of its kind and people didn't know how to feel about it. Love it, wish I could have seen it in theaters back then.
"The Exorcist" is actually a composite derived from the Earling, Iowa possession & exorcism of Emma Schmidt (aka Anna Ecklund) in 1928 (and many years beyond), the Maryland/St Louis possession and exorcism of Ronald Hunkeler in 1949, and the circa late 1950s-early 1960s possession and exorcism of an unidentified woman in rural Italy that formed the basis of the 1963 Italian film "Il Demonio" which features the original "spider walk" echoed ten years later in The Exorcist.
And you would know that because? To my knowledge, the novel "The Exorcist" was written by William Blatty. Are you saying he just picked up different incident and put them toghether?
I just finished reading the book and I came to watch this video to see if the original cut was true to the story. The Exorcist is a seminal horror film, but it becomes so much more than a horror movie when you have that scene on the stairs. It captures so much of the atmosphere of the original story that just couldn't be condensed into this film. I think it's a shame that the speech was cut.
This horror movie seems like the first horror movie that is so really scary no one else could make such a scary horror movie from the 70's this movie has given a new lease on life for horror movie history,i still love this movie.
I always felt bad for Linda Blair, because she got typecast in Hollywood because of this role. She was and is incredibly talented and diverse. It's a shame she couldn't get other roles to showcase her beauty and brilliance on screen.

I love Linda in that role but I don't feel that bad for her. She got reduced to B-movie type roles and it's obvious she probably couldn't handle these A movies.

When I was eight years old, I loved horror movies very much, and despite my young age, I was not afraid of any horror movie because I knew that this thing was not real, but I loved that feeling when I got goosebumps and my adrenaline level rose from The intensity of enthusiasm is an amazing feeling. But all this changed when I watched this movie. I remember that I watched it with my uncle and relatives late at night, and when it ended, I could not sleep at all that night. I began to hear a voice talking inside my pillow. I swear it was not an illusion. It was a clear voice. From my point of view, this film is the best horror film ever. It was very realistic, and what distinguishes it from horror films is that it does not go directly to the heart of the matter. Rather, it makes you sympathize with the girl and her mother and makes you suffer with their suffering. Even when the movie delve into the strange events, the director did not By linking the topic directly to demonic possession, he linked it from the psychological and physiological aspects first in order to increase the realism of the movie and the events, which created a unique feeling of horror. The movie's director was a genius, the cast was wonderful, and the audio and visual effects were from another world. Because of my great admiration for this masterpiece, I described it as the undisputed king of horror films, knowing that I watched it in the 2000s, and this period was advanced technology compared to the 1973 period.. but in My personal opinion: Modern and sophisticated visual effects might make a horror movie ridiculous. Excuse me if I have mistakes in the English language, as I do not speak English, but because of my great admiration for this masterpiece, I wanted to share with you my story with it and my opinion.

I cannot even fathom anything more terrifying than this movie. To this day I'm scared to watch it even in the daytime. It's terrifyingly brutal and something we all hope we never have to experience in real life.
I prefer the theatrical cut with one scene from the directors cut the spiderwalk from the 2000 cut, if they ever get the sound to the arlington scene that would be great.
Saw the revised version in the theatre a week ago. The surround mix really works well, better than it does at home. But I prefer the 73 cut and the 5.1 mix that goes with (still hoping we get the original mono again one day)
50 years on... there have been a few disturbing films since. Among modern horrors, I rank 'The Orphan' highly but the Exorcist to me, remains the scariest film ever made
Still think Friedkins original version was the better one. His reasoning behind the cuts has merit. Still I guess it’s nice he was willing to give Blatty his version before he died.
With the technology we have, we could add that line from the war memorial, we totally could. I don’t think we should though. It would be disrespectful to Blatty and Bill to make a decision like that without their permission.
For me the most effective and genuinely chilling scene, took place early in the movie, during the archaeological dig in Iraq, when father Merrin first encountered Pazuzu
Its disturbing on so many levels...a horror movies on the surface but a real psychological thriller under the surface. It really is the gift that keeps giving every time you watch it. Hearing the backstories behind the versions really talks to the dedication to all involved.
When people talk about the best horror movie of all time, they need to be asking "what's the 2nd best horror movie of all time" The exorcist stands alone.
The spiderwalk scene never worked for me. At worse, I found it mildly funny. At best, it wasn't necessary trying to one-up the other scenes of horror. The conversation on the stairs is definitely a keeper. I agree with Blatty. It IS the heart of the movie. The coda is refreshing, but feels out of place.
The scene with Fathers Karras and Merrin discussing Why the demon is attacking is definitely the crux of the film, i feel the same as Blatty. ❤ the success is when things are left unstated . . . It was definitely most successful without the scenes

Back then when this movie came out in 73 there was no 'The making of' a movie on tv in which started in the 80s by telling you all the secrets before the movie was out in the theaters, by not knowing the secrets you were held spellbound.
The 70s was the last pure decade in our lifetime and after that, the special effect was done by computers and then the synchronizing that came in the 80s not only in musicians but the movies itself........The synchronization in music then came about in the recording studious when they can alter your voice without instruments.. and in movies later on in the 80s with computerized special effect was all done by computers. Not only that before a movie came out in our television and they used to tell us how it was made with all the secrets.
I think this was one of a few movies where I had a hard time sleeping at night for weeks cause I thought I would be the next target of demonic possession and my bed would shake.
Another very effective and atmospherically eerie film technique used in this ripping effects movie that I've heard previously pointed out by some reviewers in the past was that of employing newsreel videotape type filming to further create for it's audiences a bolder sense of realism as well!!! With all these approaches being utilized, could have the viewer seemingly sitting in the same chilling room as the acting staff!! Quick! Duck! Here comes the pea soup!!

that spider scene always got me as a kid especially hearing her feet and hands coming down it was so shocking my young self had never seen something so scary
I still think the original version is the best. The thing that I really don't like about the 'director's cut' is all the additional subliminal images of Captain Howdy - it dilutes the horror to have him popping up all over the place. Irrespective of which version you prefer, Friedkin did the perfect job of making Blatty's terrifying work into a film. Rest peacefully Mr Friedkin.

The only jump scare in the movie is when Father Karras is listening to the tape of Regan talking backward and the phone rings!
I agree 100%. The story telling, the horror is just amazing that it’s truly terrifying.
The first jump scare is the candle flame blowing up in the attic.
I think Alien is up there as a great horror of that era.

That was the great work behind the make up artists in the movie!! It took many takes and hours of work to get her face right!!

but then you're missing the stair dialogue and the spider scene, two of the best bits which should never have been taken out

Scared me "to this day". I too went to see it in 1973. My oldest brother took me (he gives me a little pill, prior to going in, bad move)!! That movie scared me "shitless". I worked about 3-4 blocks away from the house it was filmed in. I had a terrible experience -- I've had to move, I couldn't stay in my apartment alone, when I went to mass on Sunday's I could sense me mumbling something -- to make a longer story Short -- the Exorcist was the most frightening movie for me!!!😢😢😢
The beauty of the audiences reactions, them feeling shaken and scared, is due to the fact that there was no horror movie like this at the time. The Exorcist was the first of its kind and people didn't know how to feel about it. Love it, wish I could have seen it in theaters back then.
"The Exorcist" is actually a composite derived from the Earling, Iowa possession & exorcism of Emma Schmidt (aka Anna Ecklund) in 1928 (and many years beyond), the Maryland/St Louis possession and exorcism of Ronald Hunkeler in 1949, and the circa late 1950s-early 1960s possession and exorcism of an unidentified woman in rural Italy that formed the basis of the 1963 Italian film "Il Demonio" which features the original "spider walk" echoed ten years later in The Exorcist.

I saw it it at 16 at night in 1973. I came home, put my rosary around my neck, and slept with the light on.
I just finished reading the book and I came to watch this video to see if the original cut was true to the story. The Exorcist is a seminal horror film, but it becomes so much more than a horror movie when you have that scene on the stairs. It captures so much of the atmosphere of the original story that just couldn't be condensed into this film. I think it's a shame that the speech was cut.

This horror movie seems like the first horror movie that is so really scary no one else could make such a scary horror movie from the 70's this movie has given a new lease on life for horror movie history,i still love this movie.
I always felt bad for Linda Blair, because she got typecast in Hollywood because of this role. She was and is incredibly talented and diverse. It's a shame she couldn't get other roles to showcase her beauty and brilliance on screen.

I love Linda in that role but I don't feel that bad for her. She got reduced to B-movie type roles and it's obvious she probably couldn't handle these A movies.

The best horror movie ever and it still is to this day. I was born in the year 95. When I was eight years old, I loved horror movies very much, and despite my young age, I was not afraid of any horror movie because I knew that this thing was not real, but I loved that feeling when I got goosebumps and my adrenaline level rose from The intensity of enthusiasm is an amazing feeling. But all this changed when I watched this movie. I remember that I watched it with my uncle and relatives late at night, and when it ended, I could not sleep at all that night. I began to hear a voice talking inside my pillow. I swear it was not an illusion. It was a clear voice. From my point of view, this film is the best horror film ever. It was very realistic, and what distinguishes it from horror films is that it does not go directly to the heart of the matter. Rather, it makes you sympathize with the girl and her mother and makes you suffer with their suffering. Even when the movie delve into the strange events, the director did not By linking the topic directly to demonic possession, he linked it from the psychological and physiological aspects first in order to increase the realism of the movie and the events, which created a unique feeling of horror. The movie's director was a genius, the cast was wonderful, and the audio and visual effects were from another world. Because of my great admiration for this masterpiece, I described it as the undisputed king of horror films, knowing that I watched it in the 2000s, and this period was advanced technology compared to the 1973 period.. but in My personal opinion: Modern and sophisticated visual effects might make a horror movie ridiculous. Excuse me if I have mistakes in the English language, as I do not speak English, but because of my great admiration for this masterpiece, I wanted to share with you my story with it and my opinion.

I cannot even fathom anything more terrifying than this movie. To this day I'm scared to watch it even in the daytime. It's terrifyingly brutal and something we all hope we never have to experience in real life.

I prefer the theatrical cut with one scene from the directors cut the spiderwalk from the 2000 cut, if they ever get the sound to the arlington scene that would be great.

Saw the revised version in the theatre a week ago. The surround mix really works well, better than it does at home. But I prefer the 73 cut and the 5.1 mix that goes with (still hoping we get the original mono again one day)

there have been a few disturbing films since. Among modern horrors, I rank 'The Orphan' highly but the Exorcist to me, remains the scariest film ever made
Still think Friedkins original version was the better one. His reasoning behind the cuts has merit. Still I guess it’s nice he was willing to give Blatty his version before he died.

William Friedkin was the most underrated director who could walk on any path which is not suitable for normal audience
For me the most effective and genuinely chilling scene, took place early in the movie, during the archaeological dig in Iraq, when father Merrin first encountered Pazuzu
Its disturbing on so many levels...a horror movies on the surface but a real psychological thriller under the surface. It really is the gift that keeps giving every time you watch it. Hearing the backstories behind the versions really talks to the dedication to all involved.
When people talk about the best horror movie of all time, they need to be asking "what's the 2nd best horror movie of all time" The exorcist stands alone.
The spiderwalk scene never worked for me. At worse, I found it mildly funny. At best, it wasn't necessary trying to one-up the other scenes of horror. The conversation on the stairs is definitely a keeper. I agree with Blatty. It IS the heart of the movie. The coda is refreshing, but feels out of place.

The scene with Fathers Karras and Merrin discussing Why the demon is attacking is definitely the crux of the film, i feel the same as Blatty. ❤ the success is when things are left unstated . . . It was definitely most successful without the scenes

Back then when this movie came out in 73 there was no 'The making of' a movie on tv in which started in the 80s by telling you all the secrets before the movie was out in the theaters, by not knowing the secrets you were held spellbound.
The 70s was the last pure decade in our lifetime and after that, the special effect was done by computers and then the synchronizing that came in the 80s not only in musicians but the movies itself........The synchronization in music then came about in the recording studious when they can alter your voice without instruments.. and in movies later on in the 80s with computerized special effect was all done by computers. Not only that before a movie came out in our television and they used to tell us how it was made with all the secrets.

I think this was one of a few movies where I had a hard time sleeping at night for weeks cause I thought I would be the next target of demonic possession and my bed would shake.
Blatty's right. That scene about despair really is essential. Stating it out loud is not bad exposition in this case.
I think they should have kept the original spider walk scene that was almost exactly how has been written in the book.

Another very effective and atmospherically eerie film technique used in this ripping effects movie that I've heard previously pointed out by some reviewers in the past was that of employing newsreel videotape type filming to further create for it's audiences a bolder sense of realism as well!!! With all these approaches being utilized, could have the viewer seemingly sitting in the same chilling room as the acting staff!! Quick! Duck! Here comes the pea soup!!

I still think the original version is the best. The thing that I really don't like about the 'director's cut' is all the additional subliminal images of Captain Howdy - it dilutes the horror to have him popping up all over the place. Irrespective of which version you prefer, Friedkin did the perfect job of making Blatty's terrifying work into a film. Rest peacefully Mr Friedkin.
