Dashcam footage corrupt after going to the Dealership

  • Watching the dashcam video after taking the car to the dealership for an oil change I found corrupted video which I found odd. Even if they had of pulled power, it has a battery and would have saved the video on power loss which it's done plenty of times. Coincidence, or did they just eject and reinsert the microSIM so it wouldn't record? I found this really strange. If you don't want to be recorded just put a piece of tape on the window or something ha. What do you guys think? Coincidence or done on purpose?
    I'm not naming the dealership, just giving my opinion on the matter.

    As a Chrysler tech myself I always wonder if people with dash cams look at the footage. That being said. I've never seen one running unless the key was on.
    If all you want is an oil change, like most have said. Do it yourself or take it to an independent shop. Dealership is going to make sure everything is good on every car that comes in. It's to upsell and to make sure your vehicle isnt a death trap.

    When they pulled the jeep in the shop they disconnected the power to the dashcam. Then when they were pulling it out they reconnected the power. There isn’t any missing footage. One dealer always unplugs my cam when they service. they said they don’t want audio and video on in the shop to protect privacy of other owners information and vehicles. Don’t know how true they were. You can always contact them to see why they unplug it.

    It seems reasonable to think that if they removed the battery terminal at any one point, then a sudden loss of power would prevent the device from properly finalizing the saved file. Though whether or not it does that would depend on the device and its reliance on a battery or capacitor. You could test this yourself by just removing the negative battery terminal and seeing if it corrupts the active file. Definitely weird though

    Done on purpose. No matter how they did it, disconnecting the battery, unplugging it, ejecting the SIM, using the laptop to edit the video, etc., only way it'd benefit you questioning it is if there is a problem with your vehicle. Only way to avoid this is make it tamper proof and have some kind of battery life to last at least an hour or two once power is lost.

      Many many years ago I worked at Chevy/ Subaru dealership as a tech. I hated it! The cut throat environment from a few other techs was disgusting to say the least. I in independent shops for about 8 years. The training was a little different as in who provides the training. At the dealership they always pushed the up sale and I did not care for that at all. In the independent shops some would push up sales but not as bad. When I ran a shop off and on I would offer different options and let them decide. I got more repeat customers because I treated them nicely and not like an idiot. I only took my vehicle now to the dealership only when oil changes were included. After that I do them myself.

    Stealership for an oil change, first mistake. Any tech doing their job right, keeping their clothes on, not pitching a fit about something, should not mind being filmed changing oil. I use cyberlink Powerdirector to read files that other video editors say are corrupt and can't read. I kind of doubt there is anything funny going on but I can probably open the corrupt video if you want I should try.

    If someone simply turned it off. That's one thing. They don't want to be recorded if someone literally accesses the device to delete a file. That's wrong. They are overstepping their bounds. If a camera can be a problem which I can understand then it needs to be discussed first and they should say listen that can't be on while the car is here. then the customer would defeat it during the time period Maybe a simple solution would be to stick a card in front of it. So it can't see anything, then It still records, but it's not being tampered with in a direct way.

All of the shops you can get a cheap oil change at will do this "321 point inspection" because they think you will buy their opinions on work they say is needed.(Mostly not needed, they try to sell you things based on milage on the vehicle. Needed or not.) Get a second opinion from a tech that you trust.

      As someone who grew up in a family of mechanics I can verify that most of the time you are ripped off at a shop. That’s why I have a custom camera build inside my rear view, you wouldn’t even know it’s there or how to turn it off if you did. A-Holes be using an impact for everything ain’t never heard of a torque wrench. There a reason why they’re called grease monkeys, cause most any ape can work on a car. So yeah, I’d rather pay 40 bucks for a belt and replace it myself in 5 minutes as opposed to waiting a week lead time to have some dude charge me 160 to warranty labor on a part that already has a warranty on it. Don’t be daft bro, most mechanics, at least in the private sector, aren’t even subject to background or drug tests, so I’d say if you have nothing to hide then it wouldn’t bother you!!!!

    • @youngandballin92
      @youngandballin92 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@beyondcompassion007 I actually agree with the most people are ripped off part, but think about this, if you have a dealership mechanic, most of the money you pay is not going to the mechanic. You’ve got the service advisor, the parts, the shop itself and then the mechanic. The ripping off happens mainly with the overcharging of the shop. I’m on pace to make 40k this year because our corporate shop is greedy, and I’m a damn good technician. That’s not enough to afford a decent living, yet I get shit on from people on the internet because they think I’m the one making so much money and I don’t do my job properly. By the way, I just bought a $300 digital torque wrench with angle, just for torquing engine components. I have 2 other torque wrenches that I use. Please don’t generalize all mechanics as not doing the job properly. We pay a hell of a lot of money just to be able to do our jobs properly.
      I’ve got nothing to hide bro, I’m just tired of everybody nowadays thinking they gotta watch my every move because I’m the one cutting corners, overcharging, etc. More often your technician cares about your vehicle more than you do.
      So yeah, I take it a little personally when I find people secretly video taping me, because you can’t get away from cameras these days. Get yourself a new mechanic that you can trust and don’t have to secretly watch them. It’s weird.
