well the alternative is Helium, but we have an absolute finite quantity of it, it is very expensive (due to how little we have) and needed in a lot of things more important than airships (MRI machines for example), and we can't really make more. well, we can but making a mining expedition for helium-3 on the moon is more viable financially than making more helium on Earth

Yeah they thought about helium but then USA was not giving their helium so hydrogen was the only option it was light but flammable but helium was a little heavier but not flammable
YES this is how the hindenburg crashed as hydrogen is a very flammable gas and when mixed with a bit of pure o2 it is very very explosive and can damage eardrums!
@@incog0956 The Hindenburg was designed to use helium actually. In the end they had to use hydrogen though because back then the US were basically the only one selling helium and they banned the export of it.
@@griffin3964 I never denied that. I just said that the fact that they could explode isn't the reason they fell out of favor. Hydrogen filled airships actually had a great safety record.

@@reeceoshaney5971 One investigation suggests the possibility that the Hindenburg hull was painted with some very electrostatically active and easily inflammable paint leading to electric discharges that might have ignited the hull's fabric and then the hydrogen compartments. @@NICEFINENEWROBOT They used doped fabric which would build up a static charge and when the wet ropes came in contact with the ground, well the rest was history.
I think the gondola is a little too big. I don't think it's something I would do. I built a balsa wood and paper plane when I was young, it actually flew.
"OH the humanity!" That was so cool. Ive been wanting to build an airship not blimp) for years and watching your success with this has gelled my resolve. And its like I figured would be the case, that helium doesnt give one enough lift per cm squared and that hydrogen does the trick. How about a 1/10th scale Hindenburg built authentically? It'd be pretty big and would require to be built in transport sections with all the gasbags (balloons?) filled and installed at the fling field. An internal rod the length of the ship with a sliding weight for adjusting the c of g in the air would probably help as would a functioning cruciform tail. And for anyone who thinks that it wouldn't work, the full sized zeppelins worked just fine (until they didnt). I think it will just be a question of getting the math right for the weight to gas pressure and of course keeping it as light as possible. Cant believe I hadn't seen this video until now. But I only just subscribed so there you go.

I used to launch hydrogen blimps all the time when I was a teenager. Eithet your source was grossly impure, or you did not purge all the air out of your envelope, because that is definitely not how that volume of hydrogen ignites. And that inner liner was entirely unnecessary wright. Just hit the original fabric with hairspray to seal it, and fill with pure hydrogen, inputting H from the top, with a port on the bottom. If the botton port is made from a tube of dry cleanong bag material, it's light enough to tie off easily without any kimd of clamp required. Attach it to ax scale so you can monitor weight/lift as you fill so you know when thr air is completely purged. Hydrogen is trivial to generate from reactants from the grocery store. Use a metal trash can with a piece of pipe coming through the lid long enough to let thw gas cool a bit before it goes into the airbag. If all else fails, go bigger. Inverse square law is your friend here.

Finally, the truth of the Hindenburg has been revealed thanks to Peter! Hindenburg was an inside job! The government used giant roman candles- No wait, that can't be right...
The most fun I had wasting 15 minutes of my life ever! Based on your little experiment, i would assume that if the Hindenburg was designed with a separate gondola, that many more people would have survived the crash! Very creative and it gave me some ideas on my modeling. BTW, was that your mom or relative that decided to play Godzilla with your ship?!?! :)
Yeah especially when one is lighting a HYDROGEN filled something ON PURPOSE without a fire extinguisher nearby when everything is dry. Not a great idea...
I looked into modeling one of these, they're hard. Every cu/ft of atmosphere is about 28g of weight so you know how many cu/ft of displacement you need. A big problem is by the time you engineer large enough a space to lift your weight the amount sail area the airship presents makes it near impossible to fly in anything but becalmed winds.
Ok this is actually pretty cool - good solution with the internal/integral envelope and a cool design of the blimp itself. Although it was built very rough, that's just your thing Im learning

You only need to increase the size of the shell and envelope by 30% to get over double the volume (220%). Since the current materials should easily handle that, the mass of the envelope/gasbag only goes up by 170%. For an 80 gram airship, the new weight would be around 136g. But the lift goes from 110g to 240g even using pure helium. So the paylod would go from around 50g to 100g.

Hey Peter, Have you heard of the Goodyear Inflatoplane? It was developed in the 50s but never made it into production, they made a few prototypes and they did work, it would be pretty fun if you attempted to make one
It was like the name says an inflatable plane. It was designed to drop to stranded air crews or for them to carry on missions in case they had to crash land. But it never really got past the experimentation stage as it had limited usefulness; you had to know how to fly and you needed a large flat area to take off from. There was also a fatal test flight when a cable got stuck and it caused the wing to fold up into the prop.
@@crispyandspicy6813 if he recreates the scene on a reduced scale while keeping the original materials of the aircraft towers and the quantity of fuel I think that could make some sweat I think that could remove some doubt about this tragic event ...
@@StepOrDieFR there is a very good vid by an ex NASA fuel engineer, it turns out the Germans used as a paint aluminium powder, to reflect the suns heat, and powdered iron, to give the "dope" structure, in effect they painted it with thermite, a rear panel lost its earth connection with the other panels and when they "grounded" the airship the ungrounded panel sparked and set fire to the covering, hence people reported smoke and flames, hydrogen burns with a smokeless blue flame, the Germans found this out very quickly but played the political victim blaming the US for not supplying helium. What people forget was the Hindenberg had been round the world and had several Atlantic crossings without any problems, something heavier than air craft at that time couldn't match, in a conventional aircraft crash very few survive, around half survived the Hindenberg, so it was even safer to crash in, if you can find it the vid is well worth watching.
It's not a blimp because it has a rigid airframe. It's a zeppelin, or airship. On a blimp, the envelope has no supporting structure. It's just a big balloon.
@@solchapeau6343 The "blimp thing" was just referring to the balloon that went inside of the rigid frame, not the airship as a whole. I guess you could say that he built a blimp that's trapped inside of a rigid airship. Now all Peter has to do is fit the entire airship in the cargo bay of an RC plane, and he'll have completed the aircraft equivalent of a turducken. New thanksgiving video idea? (naturally the plane needs to be able to deploy the airship while it's airborne)
Excellent video! In my youth, we made simple hot air balloons with dry cleaning bags. I won’t describe more because we lived in a very rural area and only flew them with snow cover to prevent starting a fire. As you discovered, it is damn hard to make a balloon light enough to float, much less fly and steer like yours did. I’m very impressed.
well there were 62 survivors out of the 97 people who survived the hindenburg, most died because they jumped out and a few died from the burns by being too close to the envelope that caught fire first, or crushed in the frame falling down. It crashed slowly that people were able to get out of bed, go to the crash site and take pictures with stand up cameras. There is a surprising amount of science in how much pressure is required to make it explode. The last survivor died in 2019 as he was 9 years old when the Hindenburg crashed. Regardless of how bad it seemed, it was actually rather safe compared to the planes at the time. Maybe not in long term scale and definitely not in comparison now, but at the time it was only 'bad' because you could see it happen in slow mo.

@@NICEFINENEWROBOT They used doped fabric which would build up a static charge and when the wet ropes came in contact with the ground, well the rest was history.

yep I think ultimately that was the only problem - look at the scale of gondolas on other airships and you'll see. Can't wait for the V2 :)
I think the gondola is a little too big. I don't think it's something I would do. I built a balsa wood and paper plane when I was young, it actually flew.
Gary Jacobs I’m building a plane like that at the moment, hard but fun!

All the best TH-cam videos end with "I gotta put this fire out"
Yeah especially when one is lighting a HYDROGEN filled something ON PURPOSE without a fire extinguisher nearby when everything is dry.
What if instead pf propellers you used hot air ballon thrusters and kites?
Peter at 14:05 accidentally demonstrates why zeppelins were useful in WW1: they could fly higher than the artillery

You did better than the Myth Busters. They couldn't get the same effect.
Gotta love geometric rates of increase!

Hey Peter,
Have you heard of the Goodyear Inflatoplane?
It was developed in the 50s but never made it into production, they made a few prototypes and they did work, it would be pretty fun if you attempted to make one
It was like the name says an inflatable plane. It was designed to drop to stranded air crews or for them to carry on missions in case they had to crash land. But it never really got past the experimentation stage as it had limited usefulness; you had to know how to fly and you needed a large flat area to take off from. There was also a fatal test flight when a cable got stuck and it caused the wing to fold up into the prop.
Try and make a zeppelin were you can sit in and fly

Thumbnail: "This is not a blimp"
Peter: "I'm building a blimp."
Is this some kind of joke I am too old for?
It's not a blimp because it has a rigid airframe. It's a zeppelin, or airship. On a blimp, the envelope has no supporting structure. It's just a big balloon.
@@drewdane40 You're right about that. So was Peter correcting himself then? Cuz around 3:30 he calls it a blimp.
Technically, what he built was not a blimp. it is a Rigid Airship

5:32 Peter: "It's So fragile...."
Then he YEETS it in the air.
my laugh called, he said he couldnt make it today
pilot: oh no, were gonna die!
airship: anywa-
*BOOM*
I can’t rhyme , but the part we all came for is 14:26
No cap that's the Hindenburg2
Sometimes I see something in the sky that isn't identifiable, then I remember that there are people like Peter.
Ufo
@@benjaminbrown3939 Peter’s probably one of those aliens they see in Alaska...
youtube is getting really comfortable with back to back unskippable advertisements
It is so damn irritating
But i suffer them for the creators that get .02 cents from it lol
1937: hindernburg crashed
2020: *Peter sripol crashed*
Still after 83 years
*The legend lives on*
well there were 62 survivors out of the 97 people who survived the hindenburg, most died because they jumped out and a few died from the burns by being too close to the envelope that caught fire first, or crushed in the frame falling down.
Who was that lady that just smacked the tiny blimp😂
Yeah that's what I am looking for, who is she. I don't like her for some reason, just seems like a grump.
That's Peter's mom, going bald sadly, due to chemotherapy.

The “Hindenburg Junior” was spectacular!
Sleeping sun song with Hindenburg 2 remake
13:39 It is bird, it’s a plane, it’s a Airship!
I mean 13:38
Instead of making a hindenburg reference (which i wanted to), I'm gonna make a fallout one.
Now make the prydwen
Who was that green jacket lady and what did the floaty boi do to her? 🤣🤣🤣
12:05 the woman was like "Oh no, im not letting that happen again"

Oh the Humanity
(explodes)
"Just like the simulations"
Peter: *crouched in a wall of flame
Also Peter: so yeah this was an absolute success
For a science guy, you sure didn't calculate for the effects of gravity on the projectiles from those roman candles! Not enough arc man!!! LOL, that really WAS a reenactment of the Hindenburg disaster! OH THE HUMANITY!!! Fun video...

His name is Herbert morrison
Nerd but ok
@@doge2131 ?
No his name is Jamie Ross a answer on Bobby dukes comment ;)
Vicy Boy no it was Herbert Morrison, he was a news person I think and he recorded the hindenburg on fire and said oh the humanity, I’m pretty sure there’s a video of it.
