Great job, my friend, those finds are awesome, but worth it. Start high, can always come down. Machines with baggers are hot going into fall season, with leaf harvest time is near :)
Loved the video. You are an easy person to listen to. I saw one thing that made me uneasy. I am a mechanical engineer and have designed plenty of things using belts and sheaves. The belt routing for the hydrostatic drives at one point only contacted a sheave on a small arc. Usually you want more wrap to transmit power. I am a little surprised Toro designed it with with so little wrap on the one sheave. I guess the power being transmitted must be low enough to not matter.
@@Kylebythecreek This may be a subtle thing that you may have missed... the idler sheaves are usually placed to force the belt around a working sheave at least 90 and if possible 180 degrees. This is to transfer power without slippage.
Kyle, this has to be absolutely your best video so far! I loved not only the intro, but also that outro down by the creek, which looks so inviting this time of year. Good going, brother! (More comments separately.)

Hi, great video so far and look forward to the finale. Just wanted to throw out there, and you may have already figured this out, but at 8:20, the reason the mower isn't rolling freely is likely because you have the key in the off position. If you were to start it, or even not start it but have in the run position, the wheels should roll freely. This is because of the additional electronic brake they have installed on newer mowers. Without turning the key, it will stay locked up. Anywho, back to the video, but not before I make some popcorn. Love this sort of TH-cam content 👍
I figure it out soon in the video, but it’s true I didn’t know this. Kind of a strange design to me, because I was dealing with a dead battery and a machine that wouldn’t roll. With no battery power, it wouldn’t matter which position the key is in
@@Kylebythecreek Hey great video! The funniest part is when you started the mower and all the smoke filled the shed, I actually held my breath for about ten seconds until you pulled it out LOL. My best guess it holds the 2..3 quarts, but getting all the old oil out is probably what caused the over fill. As far as the price, I think you nailed it at $2500, especially if you tell them to watch this video before they buy it. And I totally agree that one long video is better than multiple parts. From my experience, the latter parts usually get less and less views, plus as you point out, everything is right here in a nice package, and there's no guessing as to which part contained which content. Good job sir, and look forward to more of your fine handy work! 👍
Just came across your channel and love this video. I don’t know if it helps, but I always let the ads run when I come across a new channel (or even just new to me).
Hey Kyle. I enjoyed this video as well as all the others. I always watch your vids. Anyway, I wanted to comment a mechanical note to you on the problems you found on this engine. I had a Kawasaki FX751V with this same issue. This engine you have has been over heated. A bent push rod usually happens due to excessive tension in the valve tappet bores. This happens when the engine gets hot and warps the bore. The loose bolt for the rocker arm is also a giveaway for the engine getting to hot. Adding thread locker is likely to cause the engine to grenade it's self at some point when it bends another push rod. I would keep an eye on this engine and use it for a bit and see how it's going to act before you sell it. Sometimes you can get lucky and the engine will run fine for the life of the machine, but i just wanted you to be aware.
@@Kylebythecreek Yes because that bolt being able to come loose again can actually save it. You have to watch this engine and listen to it as it runs. You'll start to hear a metallic clicking noise and when you check the valve clearance, it will be tight. This is just before it will bend a push rod again. I told the guy that the engine had been hot and to fix this, you have to replace the block and heads along with the valve tappets, rocker arm and the rocker adjustment cam but he didn't believe me. Well, after replacing the push rod, he came back in about a month later with the same issue and the bolt was backed out again. He decided it was better to just put a new engine on it. I later found that both intake valves had been so hot that they had lost almost all the seating surface and was about to be able to go further into the valve bores. Less than a millimeter left of seat. I have never seen this before. I'm not saying this engine will keep doing this, but just to save you a possible issue down the road.
@@atsue5399 I feel like I repaired this problem correctly. I agree with you, I could always do more, like replace the head or replace the whole engine, but I’m not sure I’m ready to make the same conclusion you’ve made.
I was afraid this engine was going to have a compression issue for the one cylinder, but glad it was a valve issue. Glad there was no damage to the rocker and rocker arm. That zero turn mower turned out looking and sounding good! My dad owns a Toro zero turn mower. It's the same model in this video (SS 5000), even down to the same model Kawasaki engine. His is a 22 HP one though. Not much difference. His is either a 2010 or 2011 model year.
I just sold a 2015 Toro SW5000 just a couple weeks ago, which is identical to the SS5000 other than the SW5000 has a real steering wheel for direction and a foot pedal to control speed and forward/reverse, while the SS5000 has just the two paddle sticks for speed and direction. I had to replace the trans hydro drive belt and the idler pulley on mine a few months ago, I think both parts were about $75 total from my local Toro dealer. They were not too difficult to replace, just took some time and effort, and lying on your back underneath the back end of the mower. BTW, that's not an emergency brake, it's the electronic PARK BRAKE. It's supposed to engage automatically about 3 seconds after you shut the motor off (turn the key to OFF), or you can engage it manually anytime that you don't have the pedal depressed. If the Park brake is engaged, when you want to move forward, you can either disengage it manually by pushing the button, or by pressing the foot pedal (or moving the steering handles). It will disengage automatically as soon as you press the pedal or move one of the steering handles. I bought it not running for $500. It cleaned up really good, and I had to put about $400 altogether into it (the usual blades, belts, pulley, filters, plugs, fresh oil, pneumatic pedal damper cylinder, etc. As I said, I bought it non-running for $500, got it running really good, and then used it for a year and a half and got $1650 for it when I sold it, so I was happy!!!!!
Still working on my first ZT repair/service for a customer so I could identify with a lot in this video. I would have tested the magnetos exactly the same way and also the left cylinder. Before you opened it up I knew it was dislodged push rod and how it got there. I already knew about those brilliant cam adjusters. Way better method to adjust. I would have removed all rocker studs, cleaned and threadlocked, although I believe the exhaust are usually what backs out due to more extreme temperature fluctuations. Surprised you forgot to order the choke cable at the same time you ordered idlers. It happens. 😉
More comments! Although that was a bummer for you to fill the oil according to spec and it was overfilled, I was very glad to learn about that because I’ve got to do my first oil change on a Kawi shortly and I found differing specs for the same engine. I’ll underfill to start and top it off bit by bit to get it right. I wonder whether tilting the machine a bit might have emptied more out of the sump and that’s why it overfilled. I’ll tilt this one and let you know. 🔧👍 I think your starting price sounds just about right, although I haven’t priced out zero turns yet so I don’t know the market much.
For future reference, you have to put the bypass levers in, bring the arms in and then turn the key on to release the brake relay in order to push the unit. All information available on the inter-webs.
Yes I realize that now. It didn’t take me long to figure it out on the video though. However, I know it’s hard to watch someone learn something you already know. But that was a new one for me.
Hi Kyle it was Awesome to learn that you are a Teacher that's Excellent as i Loved My Teachers you could never Learn enough from them with the Time that you got to spend with them. I have a Question for you as an ex John Deere Apprentice Mechanic from Canada I was wondering if you would know If I can put a Twin Cylinder Kohler or Briggs & stratton Engine on a 2002 Craftsman LT1000 that had Kohler Single Cylinder 17 HP Engine??
That’s awesome to hear about your experience with your teachers. Regarding your engine swap idea- yes, you should be able to. You’ll need to check several components though (bolt holes, muffler, crank shaft, drive pulley, electrical connections to name a few)
I have a 2013 Toro time cutter SS5000 and it’s awesome. There are a few things to watch out for the electric brake if it goes out you not starting that beast and the flap it seems well made but I’m on my second one and I need a new one. Of course my wife isn’t very mindful about the flaps
I'm watching this because I've been looking for something bigger than my walk-behind mower to mow the school yard that the district only mows twice a year. (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.) I guess Portland Public Schools only has six guys taking care of 126 properties. Since this is a volunteer thing, I don't want to spend much more than I have already (Echo string trimmer and Honda mower) and this might help get me one that's not too expensive and fix it myself.
I assume this model should have the belt shields which you are missing. They are cheap. Possibly also missing the rubber floor mat where your feet sit on the platform. Good job getting it going again!
Saw that $200 Toro ZT and I yelled, “That’s exactly what I’ve been hoping to get!!!”. I spotted one at $300 recently but someone else beat me to it. 😢 I can’t afford to shell out much more than that at this stage, so I’ll probably come up with one in the Winter when they’re not in demand. 🤞 I’d make a lot off something like that, but to be honest I’d keep it for personal use until something better came along.
@@Kylebythecreek I thought you said you gave the customer $200 off the price of the lawn tractor you sold him for the ZT turn trade-in. How much DID you pay for it then?
How many hours are on the machine ? It is a shame that these manufactures can not put grease fittings on bearings. Most would not grease, but at least the option would exist to make your machine last longer :) Thanks again for your sharing your journey. I experienced the same thing with parking brakes. Went to pick one up and had to drag it on my trailer with my winch. Got it home and powered it up and found out the brakes are 12v activated. What a stupid idea. That actuator assembly probably cost as much as the mower, Lol :)
Choke just missing a spring on carb. Common issue on the Kawasaki. They pop off and get lost. Easy fix :) Never mind this, but this is another thing that happens on the Kawasaki engines, i see your spring is still there :)
I don't know what year but I picked up a 42 inch cut time cutter for $250 supposedly would have locked up engine in my diagnosis I found the cylinder was full of fuel so I replaced the carburetor and it does not want to start I'm getting a stupid clicking from the solenoid I have a new solenoid on the way and I hope that'll be the end of it we'll find out. No matter what I believe I did well purchasing it for 250 it's immaculate where is case I can put an engine on it or parted out
Kawasaki uses one steel push rod and one aluminum push when they build their motors. You can put steel push rods in on all of the valves in the Kawasaki motors and that will eliminate the bent push rods.
Hopefully you did adjusted the values on the outside as well as rechecking the repaired one after a few hours of operation . They didn't just fail for no reason or to say it correctly come lose .
@@Kylebythecreek it happened to me on a brand new wright stander mower with Kawasaki engine when doing my first oil change I wanted to make sure I got as much out as I could and put compressed air into oil fill tube with a rag to seal it up for pressure. I’m assuming I pushed oil into the valve train and cylinders 🤷🏻♂️ Maybe ruined a valve seal in the process. That engine always smoked after that but never did it before. Kawasaki rep called bs and would not replace engine. It was my first new mower. I sold at a loss and bought a different mower just because it smoked every start for a good period of time and was embarrassing at clients homes.
Kyle, i was slightly confused for a minute when you jumped from the coil to the valves, so i assume the coil worked after you cleaned it?? Also if the bearings are packable the one you saved should be repacked so it doesn't go bad as well. It was sounding a little dry. At least thise are packable yhe Craftsman one are not and a lot of them are no longer available, i am waiting till mowing season is over to see if i can soruce some for my old Craftsman i resently redid.
Hi! Yes, my test of the coils assured me that I wasn’t experiencing a spark issue. This was undoubtedly confirmed when I swapped the left coil to the right side and the engine ran the same way (still only firing on the same one cylinder). This test proved that the “dead” cylinder had a different issue than a spark issue. Logically, I went to investigate the valves on the “dead” side of the engine. I hope that helps!
There was some thickened old oil left in the crankcase that wouldn't drain even when you used air pressure. I like to add a little bit of diesel or kerosene to the oil and run it a few minuute before draining.😮 51:08
@@Kylebythecreek First time Ive seen that on a valve but have in my years as a lifelong mechanic seen it uused on other applications but usually they give a Much larger adjustment area for engine valves because of the need for resurfing valves and seats and even valve stems. That type of adjustment even allows the rocker to move orward and backward which to me is a very bad desigm which could be the reason that boly that held that rocker stand in place came loose and could also be the reason that one pushrod was bent. Thats a VERY BAD valve design

I’ll underfill to start and top it off bit by bit to get it right.
I wonder whether tilting the machine a bit might have emptied more out of the sump and that’s why it overfilled. I’ll tilt this one and let you know. 🔧👍
I think your starting price sounds just about right, although I haven’t priced out zero turns yet so I don’t know the market much.
Yes, there could have been oil left in the block. Although I did blow the oil out using my air compressor, so…who knows!!
I would replace the bearings in the last one just to know they are all fixed 😊😊😊
you should keep that mower for your house perfect with the 50 in deck
I think that with so many machines. But then I just sell them!
Great video
Thank you!
excellent video
Thank you!
@@Kylebythecreek okay Cool thank you so very kindly for you're Answer & Advice so Quickly Take care always eh
@@tommccully1991 sure thing!
I have a 2013 Toro time cutter SS5000 and it’s awesome. There are a few things to watch out for the electric brake if it goes out you not starting that beast and the flap it seems well made but I’m on my second one and I need a new one. Of course my wife isn’t very mindful about the flaps
The flaps?
Absolute W video as always
The "M" on your ohm meter is "mega" ohms. Kilo is 1000's, Mega is millions.
Great!
I assume this model should have the belt shields which you are missing. They are cheap. Possibly also missing the rubber floor mat where your feet sit on the platform. Good job getting it going again!
I’m not sure. Either way, it’s sold now
Saw that $200 Toro ZT and I yelled, “That’s exactly what I’ve been hoping to get!!!”.
I spotted one at $300 recently but someone else beat me to it. 😢 I can’t afford to shell out much more than that at this stage, so I’ll probably come up with one in the Winter when they’re not in demand. 🤞
I’d make a lot off something like that, but to be honest I’d keep it for personal use until something better came along.
Mine wasn’t $200
@@Kylebythecreek
I thought you said you gave the customer $200 off the price of the lawn tractor you sold him for the ZT turn trade-in.
There’s no hour meter on this model- very strange and poor choice by toro to not include one
Great video, I would pay 2000 only because that's all I have to spend. nice
You can put steel push rods in on all of the valves in the Kawasaki motors and that will eliminate the bent push rods.
i have the same zero turn the motor on mine runs good but needs rings but not knocking. im from Connecticut to
@@joshroberts1777 nice!
@@Kylebythecreek yeah
The rocker shaft eccentric is for valve lash
I learned this as I was installing it. Pretty interesting design
What was the stuff in the red bottle you wiped everything down with? It went to fast to see what it was. Nice job by the way 👍
Marvel mystery oil
Hopefully you did adjusted the values on the outside as well as rechecking the repaired one after a few hours of operation .
They didn't just fail for no reason or to say it correctly come lose .
A lot of the smoke issue is because you used compressed air to push out old oil too aside from being overfilled. Combination I think.
Interesting. I don’t usually do that with compressed air. Can you tell me how that led to smoke?
Thanks for the video, ever think about a ram pump in that stream ?
Can you explain?
He was slightly confused too
There was some thickened old oil left in the crankcase that wouldn't drain even when you used air pressure. I like to add a little bit of diesel or kerosene to the oil and run it a few minuute before draining.😮 51:08
Probably right. Not sure I would personally add diesel, but I get where you’re coming from
try using needle scaler on under side of decks....a lot less scrapeing
It wasn’t too bad
That off center hole is for Adjusting the valve
Yup! I figure it out. Hopefully you get a chance to watch the whole video
You should teach something
No, he shouldnt. He should just focus on other things
Why? You don't seem to be intelligent enough to learn anything
Listen to the intro a little more carefully!
@@Rein_Ciarfella sorry. Something relevant

While you had the deck off, I was just wondering why you didn't clean the underside
I did. Not everything gets filmed

Yup. I figure it out. It’s in film in the video too. Hopefully you get a chance to watch the whole video
Just wondering if those untapped spindles were intended to be installed with longer bolts and nuts. 😮 43:56
Not from what I looked up
You have a turn on the key 🔑 to release electric brakes
Hey kyle! New video 🎉🎉🎉 im in the middle of it but sp far its great, cant wait to watch the rest! Will you still be making videos once school starts? Or should i say, as frequently. If not thats totally ok becaise i have to go back to school on the 27th and I'm not looking forward to it, anyways, enough of that, have a nice rest of your day! What ever day you look at this, ok bye now
Thanks so much! Inevitably school will slow me down, but I’ll keep working to put out as many quality videos as possible!
@Kylebythecreek you're welcome, happy to hear you'll still be posting videos, we aren't going anywhere, you're videos are awesome!

@@Kylebythecreek you're welcome!😊 I have a question, what size is your shed, I just finished up my 12x12, it's what I could afford! It has 8ft walls and 10ft center where the peak of the roof is, I was curious because I want to make the most of my space seeing how your shed is set up, thanks!
You always have a good attitude in your videos. People should respond accordingly. Keep it up man, really liked this episode.
You forgot to polish the deck wheels 😅 54:37
It sold no problem. The buyer never complained about the unpolished deck wheels, believe it or not!
Put bigger wheels on to make it higher😅 57:48
That’d be interesting. Probably mess up the levelness of the deck though
I wouldn't say you restored it you just repaired it
What you call a cheaply made box store mower !!
I posted that last comment to soon 😂😂😂😂😂
Took me a minute, but I figured it out. But it didn’t help that the battery was stone cold dead and I needed to put my jump pack on to figure that out
Hi puppy
M = megohms (or mega ohms) 1 M ohms = 1 million ohms. K = kilohms (or kilo ohms) 1 K ohms = 1 thousand ohms. Ω is the symbol for ohms.
Did you release the parking break.
Thank you for mentioning your geographic location (Connecticut). I live in Kensington, Maryland. Would a zero-turn mower work on a 30-degree slope? I can't go up and down because of parked cars in the street. Would the mower be too dangerous going laterally? I have a steep hill on my property.
I’m not sure. But I bet the manufacturer of the zero turn you’re considering would specify the slope it can operate on
@@Kylebythecreek Thank you for your reply.
Keep it
I sold it yesterday!
Cub-cadet 1515 1500 tractor won't start on choke or no choke used to before had new carb put on it spray starting fluid in the carb it runs dies do it again it will stay running, fuel line was clogged twice before sometimes get gas in fuel filter sometimes not, just want it to start n run everytime only has 2230hrs on it.
