No Kurd believes all Kurds speak the same language. When a Kurmanji and a Zazaki speaker meet, they simply cannot converse... everyone is aware of this. I think you are conflating national identity with language here - Zazas are considered Kurds despite this language barrier.

thats interesting as a kurd i understand around 60% to 70% of it its a bit tricky because of the sound shift like v in kurmanji becomes m in zazaki and w in sorani ( mêvan /mêman/mêwan) btw zazas also dont understand gorani even tho it is clarified as the same language that is the (zaza-gorani) language but thats nothing to be surprised about tangiblety is bot a requirement for language to be considered related or the same . unfortunately most zazas dont understand zazaki the un listed zazaki as a dead language a year ago unfortunately all this because of Turkey.
ti her rind be diso . Nıka ez veyşana kê ..... hahahaha .
idk why but as a kurmanj writing and speaking zazaki is very fun to me even tho i get alot of it wrong lol .

thanks for the vid . i am a kurd and i should say something about language as a kurmanj i used to not understand around 40% of sorani or zazaki now i understand it because of news channels that has a mix of the 2 version of kurdish it took me less than a month to completely understand sorani :) i think the local versions of the kurdish language are because of the geography that forces kurds to live isolated from each other and that makes developing local versions common but that will change soon because of social media :)

The newspaper in the back at 5:30 displays the Persian or Arabic way of writing Kurdistan (Kordestan) کردستان, as in Sorani it would be spelled as Kurdestan کوردستان, with the letter vav. The Kurdish people seem to have been a nomadic Iranian people with gifted musicians. There are close to no written ancient, non-modern treatises in the Kurdish language, no self-defining national epic has been found similar to the epic of Gilgamesh or the Shahnameh. The language seems to have been passed from generation to generation almost exclusively orally. It is fascinating. More research is needed. Thank you for this informative video🥰

The Sassanid dynasty was a Kurdish family. Dr. Rashid Yasemi, a professor at the University of Tehran, states that (Sasan), who is the grandfather of (King Ardashir), is from the Kurdish clan of (Shwankara) and that the mother of (Papak) is the daughter of one of the heads of the Kurdish (Bazrangi) clans. The home of this clan is the Kurdish region of Fars Province. Yasemi adds that we can say that (Ardashir) is Kurdish.
Papak, the son of Sasan, belonged to one of the houses of fire for Anahita. Papak had a son called Ardashir who founded the Sassanid state. Ardashir was born in the city of Percy Polis, Persia, where his grandfather Sasan had already moved. Ardashir loved military life and became a top military commander. Ardashir’s brother was a state governor, but Ardashir revolted against his brother and forced him to relinquish his rule. After taking power, Ardashir expanded his kingdom, annexing the coasts of the Gulf of Hormuz, Ilam, Isfahan and Media.
Ardashir’s expanding of his kingdom worried the last king of the Parthia, the king (Ardavan IV), why he sent a messenger carrying a letter from him to (Ardashir), in which he was insulting him for his family’s background. This insulting letter was read by the Sassanid king (Ardashir) at the royal court in the presence of the Sasanian citizens. The letter included the following: (You have been your enemy and brought your death, you, Kurdish man who has brought up in the tents of the Kurds. Who authorized you to wear a crown?). Al-Tabari and Ibn al-Atheer refer to this letter. The letter of the Parthian king clearly states that the Sassanid dynasty was a Kurdish family.
Yaqut al-Hamawi also states in his book (The Dictionary of Countries, written from 1224 to 1228, that when the Sassanid sultans, built the city of Mada-in, they built a district within Mada-in, named “Kurdabad”, as pride of their belonging to the Kurdish people. “Kurdabad” means "A district built by the Kurds. Yaqut al-Hamawi also mentions the names of six other districts in the city of Mada-in, in addition to (Kurdabad).
It is worth mentioning that the real name of (Mada-in) is (Madyan), which means in Kurdish (Medes), who are the ancestors of the Kurds. The Kurdish name of this city was altered by the Arabs from (Madyan) to (Mada-in) and the Persians called it (Tesfoun). The Sasanian king, Ardashir, also built a special city for the Kurds near the present-day city of Mosul, which he called "Buth Ardashir".
Also, the Sassanid king (Qubad) and (Anushirwan) built more than thirty cities in the plain (Aran), and one of these cities bore the name (Malazkurd). The Kurdish designation of a district in the Sasanian capital and the construction of Kurdish cities by the Sassanids, are further evidence of that the Sassanids were Kurds. ❤💛💚

There has never been a state called Kurdistan in history. Stop stealing the history of other nations. The Sassanids: An Empire of Persian Origin
The Sassanids are known as a dynasty of Persian origin that ruled over Iranian lands between 224-651 AD. During this period, Iran experienced a significant rise in cultural, religious and political terms thanks to the Sassanids. The Sassanids embraced the legacy of the Achaemenid Empire, revived the Persian identity and adopted Zoroastrianism as the fundamental belief system of the state. However, there is no consistent historical evidence that the Sassanids were of Kurdish origin.
      Origin of the Sassanids
The founder of the Sassanid Dynasty, Ardashir I, came from the Fars region in what is today southern Iran. This region was called Persis (Pars), which was also the center of the old Achaemenid Empire. The dynasty took its name from Ardashir's grandfather, Sasan. Sasan is mentioned as a Zoroastrian priest in both mythological and historical sources, which reinforces the Sassanid dynasty's ties to Zoroastrianism.
The fact that the Sassanids came from the Fars region and that their language was Middle Persian (Pahlavi) clearly reveals their Persian origins. Middle Persian became the official language of the Sassanid Empire and this language was accepted as an indicator of the dynasty's Persian identity.
      Achaemenid Heritage and Persian Identity
The Sassanids saw themselves as the heirs of the Achaemenid Empire. It is known that Shapur I (240-270 AD) and other Sassanid rulers in particular tried to revive Persian administrative traditions during the Achaemenid period. Clear references to Achaemenid aesthetics are made in Sassanid art and architecture. However, the Sassanids, taking into account the dynamics of their own period, transformed Zoroastrianism into a more organized state religion.
The Claim That the Sassanids Were of Kurdish Origin
There are some modern claims that the Sassanids were of Kurdish origin. However, these claims lack strong historical evidence. The language used by the Sassanid rulers (Middle Persian), their cultural structures and administrative systems were based on Persian tradition. In addition, the Fars region where the Sassanids emerged was outside the regions where Kurds were densely populated at that time.
It is likely that the Sassanid rulers established relations with the Kurdish people; since the Kurds were one of the various ethnic groups living within the vast territories of the Sassanid Empire. However, this does not prove that the Sassanids were of Kurdish origin. Historical and archaeological sources clearly support that the Sassanids were of Persian origin.
      Conclusion
The Sassanids, as a dynasty of Persian origin, formed one of the most important empires in Iranian history. He revived the cultural and political heritage of the Achaemenid Empire and made Zoroastrianism the cornerstone of the state. The claims that the Sassanids were of Kurdish origin have no historical basis. On the contrary, the Sassanid dynasty, which came from the Fars region, established the Persian identity of Iran.

"History is written by the victors, but the stories of the Kurdish people, who have long been denied a place in the narrative, endure through their resilience, struggle, and unyielding quest for justice and freedom."
This adapts the idea of "history is written by the victors" to highlight the plight and resistance of the Kurdish people, who have faced centuries of suppression and marginalization. While many of their stories may have been overlooked or distorted, their history is still very much alive through their efforts to preserve their culture and identity.

Watching this video turned out to be a wonderful way to spend a peaceful Sunday. It was engaging, thought-provoking, and informative.
This detailed exploration of Kurdish history, language, and culture is truly admirable. While minor omissions are natural given the vast scope, the video provides an impressive and comprehensive look into this rich heritage. Kurds represent one of the world's largest stateless ethnic groups, often overlooked despite enduring significant oppression and challenges.
It is deeply disheartening that such an ancient and culturally rich people cannot freely speak their language or live their identity in their homeland. This injustice stands as a glaring contradiction to the modern world's commitment to human rights and dignity.
Your work helps amplify the voices of those who have been silenced and brings much-needed attention to their struggles. It’s a meaningful contribution to the global recognition of the Kurdish people’s resilience and cultural heritage.

    1. Origins of the Kurds
You mentioned that the origins of the Kurds are uncertain and possibly linked to the Medes or a mix of different ancient peoples. While this is a common narrative, it's worth noting that genetic and linguistic studies suggest that the Kurds have deep roots in the Zagros Mountains region, with a distinct identity that has evolved over millennia. The idea that they are merely an amalgamation of various groups might undermine their historical continuity in the region. While it's true that scholars debate the specifics, the consensus leans towards a long-standing indigenous presence rather than a recent formation from various nomadic groups.
    2. Language
You stated that the Kurdish language forms a continuum of dialects, which is accurate, but the extent of this diversity and its implications might have been understated. Kurdish is part of the Northwestern Iranian languages and includes major dialects like Kurmanji, Sorani, and Pehlewani, each with its own grammar and vocabulary. The lack of a standardized writing system does pose challenges, but efforts have been ongoing for decades to develop unified language policies, especially among diaspora communities. Kurdish is not merely a "dialect continuum" but a complex language with rich literature and linguistic depth.
    3. Historical Influence
The statement that Kurds have been historically influenced by the Ottoman and Persian empires is correct but needs more nuance. Kurds had their own principalities and states (like the Ardalan and Badinan emirates), showing a history of semi-autonomous governance and cultural development. The narrative often frames Kurds as merely caught between larger powers, but this overlooks their agency in regional politics, especially during the early Islamic period and the Ottoman-Safavid wars.
    4. Current Configurations and Rights
Your point about Kurdish rights in Iran, Turkey, and Iraq reflects the general situation but could be more precise:
    - In Iran, while Kurdish is not an official language, there have been limited efforts for Kurdish-language education in recent years, albeit heavily restricted and controlled by the state.
    - In Turkey, the Kurdish language and identity have faced systemic suppression, but there have been some changes, particularly since the early 2000s with cultural and media reforms. However, political setbacks have often reversed these gains.
    - In Iraq, Kurdish is indeed recognized as an official language alongside Arabic, especially in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) area. However, this doesn't fully address the complexity of the relationship between the KRG and Baghdad, including disputes over territory and resource control.
    5. Your Dismissal of Further Exploration
You mention that it isn't worth delving deeper into this topic. While you have the right to your perspective, this might come off as dismissive, especially given the complexities and the significance of the Kurdish question in regional geopolitics. Understanding the Kurdish issue requires ongoing engagement and an open mind, as it is not just an "overview" topic but a deeply intricate subject involving history, culture, and ongoing conflicts.
In summary, your overall approach is fair, but it simplifies complex historical and geopolitical contexts. The Kurdish question isn't just a matter of academic interest-it's a lived reality for millions of people. Being open to further exploration would better reflect the gravity of the topic and respect the diverse experiences of Kurdish communities across different countries.

The majority of the Sorani Kurdish vocabulary (over 86%) consists of native elements. Arabic contributes the largest share of loanwords, followed by minor influences from European languages, Persian, and Turkish. The European loanwords typically pertain to modern administrative terms, objects, and other miscellaneous items.

Hello! ^0^ Thank you for your lovely comment-it’s much appreciated. Just to clarify, I’m not a scientist at all, just a language enthusiast trying to make sense of the world around me. I made this video about Kurdistan because someone suggested the idea, and since I didn’t know much about the Kurds or their language, I thought it would be an interesting topic to explore.
As it turns out, I spent many long evenings researching, only to receive a lot of insults, to say the least! But that’s the Internet, after all.
Thanks again for visiting the channel and leaving such a supportive comment! All the best! ;)

@@nofridaynightplansCould you please answer the following questions? I have my own predictions, but want to be sure about them.
      What’s your ethnicity?
Do you know kurdish at all?
What’s the name of so called “linguist(s) that says the name of Kurds “derived” from the word “kwrt”?
When did the so called “word kwrt” start to be used in so called “persian”?
      What’s your degree?
How many languages do you know?
Why are you ignoring the name of Kurti for being the name for the Kurds since the Sumerian era, and instead prefer to use word “kwrt” that has never been known until recently?
Kurti means the mountainous people; kur means mountain and ti is a suffix that defines belonging/ to be from somewhere.
      Are you good at geography?
Do you know the areas that the names of the regions, “Iran” and Mesopotamia covers?
Thanks in advance and looking forwards to your answers?
      By the way, l’m a multilingual. 🙂

There is incorrect information in the video. The oldest Kurdish name is mentioned in Sumerian tablets. Klaudios Ptolemy mentioned them as “Gordionoros”, meaning Kurdish mountains, in his book in the 2nd century after Christ. He mentions the Kurdish geography again in his book Anabasis Before Christ, The Return of the Ten Thousand. Many historians consider the Kurds to be the modern ancestors of the Medes.

Absolutely fantastic work. I cannot get enough from your videos, your angles and your view on the world. There's so few reflected, interesting, accessible voices from these regions available in my limited little world - so I'm so happy you're expanding and enriching it.
The only remark I have - but that's because I'm a bit of a pronunciation nerd - is that you have a lot of english words where your accent/stress patterns are off, or you use the wrong vowels. Your English is fantastic and your scripts well written, but if you want a frontier to tackle, you might want to consider properly looking up the pronunciation of various rare/complicated words.

I think you're the one who was a bit uncomfortable with the visuals in the Persian video? I hope the new videos are better on that front.
It's always good to be corrected and there is lot of room for improvement when it comes to all my languages. It's normal to not always get it right as a non-native. As long as I manage to get the message across, that's the most important.
I'll endeavour to improve and do better next time (on all fronts)!

Complete misinformation. This woman is racist and full of hate towards the kurds. Whatever she said in this video is false, fake, and wrong . Kurds are the owners of Mesopotamia. They are descendant of summerian, Guttie, mittani, illam, Median Empire, and Kurdish language, which is the mother of many languages in the Middle East. Persian are Indian gypsies and came to Anshan area near the city of shiraz, Persian were the slaves and servants of the Kurdish Median Empire, the first Persian King Cyrus is grandson of Kurdish King from mother side.
People, please never listen to barbaric Persian, Arabs and Mongol Turks regarding history, They lie and faked history for 100s years. They stole the history of the kurds, and still they spread lots of rubbish, lies myths.
Whoever wants to know the Kurds, please read this book. ( The lost and untold history of the kurds) Soran hama rash the writer.

I really liked your observation at the beginning of the video about how the languages of people who lived under the control of invaders gradually disappeared, with some exceptions, and Kurdish being one of them. Achieving this survival required very strict assimilation policies against Kurds in Turkey. I remember when the Turkish military conducted operations in our region, we had to bury our Kurdish music cassettes to avoid being arrested for that. There was even a proposal in the Turkish parliament to reward those who reported people speaking Kurdish.
To this day, 30 million Kurds in Turkey still cannot receive services in Kurdish, even in cities where more than 90% of the population is Kurdish. For example, a Kurdish patient with a hearing impairment was sent back from a hospital last week in Siirt province because she could not speak Turkish. I attended school for 16 years and could not find a single sentence that included the word "Kurdish" in any textbook. I started understanding my teacher from the third grade, as I didn’t know Turkish at all. This assimilation continues today.
In just the last month, dozens of Kurdish weddings have been raided, and young Kurds dancing the traditional "halay" to Kurdish songs have been taken into custody. This reflects the ongoing repression and cultural restrictions faced by Kurds in Turkey.
Operations are still carried out against places that publish books in Kurdish or offer Kurdish courses. Even Tokyo University included Kurdish language in its syllabus, and the Turkish foreign minister attempted to prevent that. Kurdish children are prevented from receiving education in their own language. There is only one Kurdish TV channel in Turkey, and it is state-controlled, with strict control over the content it broadcasts. Kurdish MPs still have their microphones turned off when they speak Kurdish in parliament, and their words are not even recorded, often categorized as an "unknown language." But that so-called "unknown language" is simply the language of 30 million Kurds in Turkey. Despite this intense assimilation, the fact that Kurds have managed to preserve their language is truly a miracle.
Assimilation has always been a crime against humanity, but in an era where artificial intelligence, neural networks, and machine learning are discussed, such practices of assimilation are even more shameful. Yet, there are still people who claim, "Kurds are our brothers, we have no issues with them, it’s just America that is provoking them." I hope this notion of brotherhood is not shared by everyone. 😃

It is truly amazing how you are able to tell this story while conveniently avoiding any mention of the genocides of Assyrians by Kurdish tribes that had to take place for them to expand through Anatolia and Upper Mesopotamia. It is extremely well-documented and known by historians that essentially all large Kurdish population centers west of the Zagros such as Duhok (Nohadra), Erbil, Zakho, Mardin, Midyat, Diyarbakir (Amid), Hakkari, etc. were, for thousands of years, inhabited by Assyrians and Armenians that were at some point murdered, kidnapped, and raped by Kurdish tribesmen, so it is truly inspiring that you are able to tell the story of the Kurds without any mention of this history. I admire your dedication to perpetuating the historically revisionist falsity that the Kurds are indigenous to Mesopotamia and Anatolia despite thousands of historical records that show they are a nomadic Iranian people who murdered, pillaged, and raped their way from the Zagros to the Levant. Well, actually the claims about Zazaki and Gorani languages are originated from lack of enough knowledge. Firstly, Gorani has been influenced by Lurian and Persian languages especially gramatically in last few centurşes and has lost some of its critical Northern grammatical structures. The same happens to Kurmanji vocabulary and phonetics probably due to its sociologial conditions. When you go a few centuries back, you can see that Kurmanji, Gorani, and Zazaki are too close to each other. Even today Kurmanji and Zazaki are probably gramatically closest ones. When you go to lets say 15th or 16th Century and read Kurmanji poems you can easly claim that some of them are Zazaki. Secondly, there's a debate nowadays among Zaza people about their origin but there has never been such a one among Gorani speakers. In fact, Gorani speakers have always called themselves as Kurds and until 15th Century if someone had asked "Who are Kurds?", probably people would firstly point Gorani speakers. They also had a greater literature until 15th Century than other groups and in all of those writings they've called their language as Kurdish. But in modern centuries since the Kurmanj population is larger than the others, people firstly point the Kurmanj as Kurd. Other debates are mostly either due to lack of knowledge or due to political games played by dominant forces. Divide and rule...

Hello. What's your evidence to count all Kurdish languages as a dialect of Farsi language? Meanwhile Kurdish is a language not a dialect, especially when Kurdish languages by their own have many dialects.

The essence Of Kurdish life ( a poem):
Migration once was life and flight.
    Flamingos soared, Caribou in sight.
We roamed with tribes, nomadic, free.
Now borders bind, what we can"t see.
We caged ourselves, but let them be !
    Let caribou roam, Flamingo flee.
For in their flight, we glimpse the past.
A freedom lost, but " memories cast "
That's what unites us. Perspective on life, music, freedom, pride .... Hope that was helpful.

The Kurds themselves are notoriously divided geographically, politically, linguistically, tribally and ideologically. Their mountains and valleys divide the Kurds as much as they stamp them ethnically. Whatever their exact origin, it is clear that racially the Kurds today constitute a mixture of various groupings, the result of earlier invasions and migrations.
The Kurdish languages too (which is related to Iranian) has two main variants, Kurmanji (or Bahdinani) spoken mainly in the northwest of Kurdistan (Turkey and the Bahdinan or Barzani area of northwest Iraqi Kurdistan) and Sorani spoken mainly in the southeast of Kurdistan. Finally, there are numerous subdialects of each one of these four main dialects. These Kurdish language variants are only partly mutually understandable, a situation that adds to the many divisions in Kurdish society.
