Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 crossover SUV of the YEAR?

  • The Toyota RAV4 is all new for 2019. Under the hood of the redesigned sheet metal is a 2.5L inline-4 producing 203HP & mated to an 8-speed automatic. On the inside there has been a huge upgrade in materials and lots of new technology to keep you save. Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 an improvement over the previous generation or just the same?

I believe the new Rav4 is a winner and should be midsized crossover SUV of the year. Looks are subjective. I like the styling. It matches the general styling traits of the new TNGA platform Toyotas, and the 4Runner and Tacoma pickup.
In Hawai'i the Tacoma and 4Runner are extremely popular, and has been for ages for everyday people, surfers and other outdoor recreational enthusiasts, and the 4Runner is certified for police use as a subsidized private vehicles for senior patrol officers. But the Rav4 ? The Rav4 is all that, in a rugged smaller package, capable of many things other places do. The overall styling is fine with me. The previous ones were pretty nice, though it does not thrill everyone else.
Props to manufacturers that make heavy duty vehicles in a smaller package with reliability, durability, and efficient use of space inside.
The infotainment is nice, though not the latest. Android Auto confirmed on the TRD version for 2020.

My wife has a ‘19 limited. All wheel drive with torque vectoring. We are having a problem with the front differential making a groaning sound. Toyota is aware of the problem but doesn’t have a fix for it yet other than to switch to sport mode, then the groan/ grinding noise goes away. Apparently it only affects the limited and adventure awd units.

Just drove one last weekend. Love the look. I have a 2016 RAV4, the two things that turned me off was the engine sound and power. The 2019 sounds like an airplane landing. The power was not there, with my foot to the floor, it slowly accelerated. My 2016 176 HP felt way faster and is much quieter. If Toyota can fix those two issues I would trade in, but for now I don’t see spending the money.

As much as I like it, i really don't like how SUVs nowadays are trying to be sporty and rugged, I see no reason for a sport mode and extremely rugged styling, if its not a performance/off-road-oriented SUV, there is no need for a sport mode and over the top styling (Just more added expense). @jjacob25101 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The Passport is nice, but it's bigger. Both expensive with all the goodies. IMHO you can't lose with either one, especially if you get the fully loaded Passport Elite, or the 2020 Rav4 TRD when it comes out later this year. The TRD is not a rock crawler like the Tacoma & 4Runner TRD Pro models, but, it can go off road high speed without killing the suspension like many and most heavy duty factory off road trucks and SUVs would.

Why is an 8-speed better than a CVT? I get that traditional transmissions are what we're all hard-wired to be used to. But some of the modern CVTs (Honda) are really smooth and do a great job making sure the engine is where it needs to be for response, economy, and performance when needed.

    • @temur72

      Two things.
1 having the Rpm stay the same when accelerating creates a drone. Lots of manufacturer's have created artificial "gears" or steps to mimic gear changes.
      2. Durability CVts have a reputation of not being very durable especially when on heavier vehicles. Nissan cvts have a very bad reputation
