    When Bricky talks instant evolution he doesn't mean that the individual bugs will suddenly grow gills. Rather, the hive will instantly start sending out the necessarily adapted bugs. The obsolete bugs will just go back into the digestive pools and be reabsorbed to make new ones. This still happens really fast, mind you.

      It is fast, but not so fast so that they can't be countered. If you have enough diversity in weaponry you can overwhelm them and they can't adapt fast enough.
      There's a battle where the Imperium and the Tau worked together and fought against the Nyds. The Nyds couldn't adapt quickly and effectively enough to fight against both of them

    The imperium believes and Hopes that the hive minds of each fleet are seperate. However, just as often as hive fleets have been observed competing, so too have they been observed cooperating as well. So while there remains hope that the minds of each fleet are seperate and not all arms of the same mind, there remains a distinct likelihood that all the hive fleets are parts of the same whole, and its competition against itself serves to confuse and obfuscate the situation or serves some other, inscrutable purpose.

    • @Oscar_Lasco
      @Oscar_Lasco 3 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      According to an old codex I read a decade ago, when two fleets fight each other it's usually when there's nothing else to eat. But not only does the winner gets the loser's biomass, it also gets its specific genetic traits and becomes even more dangerous! When a fleet with super acid fights a fleet with superstrong psyker units, you get a fleet twice as strong with super acid and superstrong psyker units.

    • @davidthomas2870
      @davidthomas2870 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      @@Oscar_Lasco yes, but we've also seen traits developed by tyranids on one end of the galaxy pop up whole segmentii away, so absorption clearly isnt the only way genetic traits can be shared; they can share remotely regardless of distance if they choose to. So that raises the question: is this hive fleets fighting each other or a violent consolidation of 2 fleets by a higher intelligence? Or perhaps both already have the adaptation but not the necessary specific materials to manifest both traits, so the hive mind smashes the 2 fleets together to get one bigger, more powerful fleet while also using the oportunity to run a sort of live fire combat drill to gain combat experience without risking any biomass?

    • @davidthomas2870

      @@profsrlojohn635 exactly! If they're all independent, why would they be bringing Tiamat biomass??? The problem with the ultramarines is how they are written
    For example, them and the imperial fist are very similar and your bog standard marine, but if they were both to tell the same story it would have the ultramarines all survive except one and all become company captains and get their own models for the table top.
    While the fists would all slowly die through the story and the last one sacrifices himself to destroy something and his helmet becomes a relic.

Like, I think some of the vitriol thrown at Ward is overblown - sending the man death threats is a very "this is why we can't have nice things" moment, and anyone who did it should be ashamed of themselves - but he should be justly criticized for turning the Ultramarines into Mary Sues. To the point where they became the poster boys for the Space Marines, and by extension 40K as a whole.

    The Ultramarines received some hideous casualties in Tyrannid wars, losing both First Company and Calgar's Honour Guard. They still managed to rebuild surprisingly fast, partially thanks to group known as Genesis Chapter. Established during the second founding to Ultramarine's neighbor and being extremely strict Codex followers, they can send their own troops to join Ultramarines in those rare cases when the fighting strength goes too low. A very unusual practice, but I suppose there is a good reason to prevent the nine founding Chapters from going extinct. Something similar happened with Imperial Fists: when facing extinction against the worst Ork attack in Imperial history, it's successors sent their best to rebuild the Chapter.
    This battle was nevertheless a big service of Humble Pie for Ultramarines. Calgar wholeheartedly approved on founding of anti-Tyranid specialists as their own fighting force, which could be considered a pretty big deviation from Codex. Some of the more strict Codex following successor Chapters would have problems with that until Guilliman himself approved of the idea.

    Oh, the tyranid fleets ABSOLUTELY DO work together. For example, hive fleet Kronos is specialized in fighting warp-based enemies (demons and stuff), and because of that they don't actually get alot of biomass from fighting. So, other hive fleets just strip defences from some worlds, and leave them intact for Kronos to consume.
    Other example is Hydra. It just follows Leviathan, and eats all the splinter fleets that are left from fighting. And those splinter fleets dont actually resist that much. Wich allows them to quickly combine broken forces into a new bigger and singular one.

    • @11jerans
      @11jerans ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Kronos is a splinter fleet of leviathan. Full on hive fleets don’t like each other because their hive minds can’t talk to their troops over each other. DK isn't quite right about Hive Fleets "hating" one another. I think they work, mentally, a lot like how they work physically: as individual tendrils of a greater whole. When two hive fleets meet, they *will* fight and one will devour the other, but *not* in favour of defeating a greater enemy. They fight not because of animosity, but in *constructive* competition. The Hive Mind learns which of the two sets of adaptations were stronger, and the resultant combined swarm has access to the genetic memories and adaptations of the "defeated" swarm too. Even when it's eating itself, the Hive Mind *still* comes out on top!

    So, while this probably won't get read, I'll feel a little better about it as a Tyranid player. Behemoth was the first and smallest of the three main Hive Fleets (the 3 Tyrannic Wars) The Ultramarines and their associated Guard regiments and fleets were able to hold off Behemoth, but the Blood Angela and their entire lineage plus associated Guard and fleets lost to the main thrust of Leviathan, and were only saved by Kabandha of all things. Also, Behemoth plowed through multiple worlds and left plenty of worlds seeded for future generations of Tyranids, Calth for example is still riddles with Termagants and Genestealers that came out of the woodworks when Old One Eye was defrosted

    They have a unit called Narwhal they use for intergalactic travel. It basically creates a portal between it's location and the place they want to go, and they travel like that. Technically, this method is the fastest among all races iirc. However, they cannot exit the portal near stars, so their portals are a significant distance away from the planet they want to assault, after which they travel at sub light speeds.

    • @davidthomas2870
      @davidthomas2870 3 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      It isnt so much a portal as an artificial singularity. They then "fall" towards it and get dragged along really really fast, spending half the journey speeding up as they approach the half way mark and the second half slowing down so they dont just go hurtling past the target system. It is unclear if this can exceed the speed of light as of yet, and hard to truly measure with any accuracy as chaos stuff and the warp make causality weird but if nothing else, it gets them going at least at 99.99999% the speed of light, possibly even closer than that. If they dont have FTL, that's possibly even worse, because it means that due to the time it would still take them to get from point a to point b, they're intentionally faking battles being against the same hive fleet when in reality just about every fight has been a seperate component fleet of an even more incomprehensibly large whole, that has the strategic know how to fake having FTL travel by deploying sub light speed fleets and units in such a way as to create a false impression of ft. If this is the case, the galaxy isnt in the process of being invaded; it has already been infested in totality and the space between systems is likely thick with tyranids and we are simply seeing the opening stages of their deployment, and the situation is infinitely more dire than it is perceived to be as they arent being fooled by imperium strategies or even really loosing significantly; they're toying with us in such a way to make us think we could understand them and hope to win, when we have in fact already lost. Like a mouse that thinks its winning as it draws blood from the snake that is presently crushing its bones. Let us hope that this isnt the case and the imperium has the right idea of how the tyranids work. If not, it is already over save for the final snapping shut of the jaws

    The best way to explain tyranids is imagine you have your army but at any given time you can recall your entire army and rebuild every soldier gun, and even down to the bullet to be exactly what you need within a day or two.
    Think of the swarmlord like the brains of the body, synapse creatures like the nerves and organs and basic nids as cells, the hive mind expeds smaller bugs such as gaunts as if they were ammunition.

    50:40 Its generally assumed the hive fleets compete with each other, however exceptions exist. There is a Hive fleet that specializes in fighting Chaos (Hive Fleet Kronos?), however killing Chaos typically leaves no biomass, so another hive fleet just goes around and rips the defenses out of various planets and then leaves so this other fleet can "easily consume" and keep its strength up.

    One small note regarding the different Hive Fleets and the possibility of different Hive Minds, it's mentioned in an old Tyranid Codex (5th ed, if I remember correctly), that the entirety of the Tyranid species is controlled by one singular Hive Mind. Any Hive Fleet that encounters another Hive Fleet will attack it, though this is comparable to you transferring money between two of your own bank accounts. The accounts may change in terms of value, but you overall don't lose any money. There is no net gain or loss of biomass when two Hive Fleets fight.
    The Hive Fleet, most likely, pits the Hive Fleets against each other if they meet to test them. If Kraken beats up Jormungandr, then Kraken is more "deserving" of that biomass and may continue to use it to evolve. At the end of the day, the Tyranid race as a whole doesn't lose any of their biomass.

    The thing with Kryptman was he would not warn planet's that the nids were coming or evacuate citizens or anything.
    He'd wait for the nids to arrive and invade the planet and as soon as they had won and committed all the resources they were going to, then he'd exterminatus the planet.
    Essentially his logic was if the nid fleet had 100 units of biomass, attacked a planet worth 40 units, and used 20 to take the planet then they would not only gain that 40, they'd also get their 20 back giving them a net profit of 40.
    However if they didn't get any of that biomass at the end they'd be down 20 units to 80. Kryptman figured if he could lure the nids into attacked biomass rich worlds and do that enough he'd eventually starve them to death. It's logical but horrifying. It's a plan a sociopath would come up with.
    Yes trillions would live but he'd have to sacrifice billions of people to do it every time the nids showed up which is most definitely a net negative loss in population which will definitely start to hurt, especially the fact that those planet's are often pretty important to the sector and sometimes the galaxy. Agriworlds, industrial worlds, massive population centers, resource rich worlds. There's no way that the imperium won't feel the losses eventually. Especially since we don't know how many nids there actually are.
    On the Hitler Scale of Genocides he did about 10,000 Hitlers in case you're wondering. (Note that the total number of people killed by the Nazis outside of combat numbers around 10 million, 6 million of which were Jewish people. I do not count combatants and civilians killed outside of the death camps in his kill count).

    There is actually one situation of two hive fleets working together that I can remember and that's Hive Fleet Kronos and leftovers of Hive Fleet Leviathan since Kronos' 'duty' within the greater Hive Mind's plan is to prevent the spread of the Warp and thus protect the supply of food but, since they can't eat Chaos, they thusly have the problem that they rarely get to resupply. To that end, splinter fleets of Hive Fleet Leviathan will roll up to random worlds, eat all the defenders, destroy all ships and any other forms of communication but leave the civilian populace, fauna and flora behind undefended so that Hive Fleet Kronos can essentially use it as a free lunch.

    I still think Kryptman might need an episode of his own cause I feel like Bricky is doing the man wrong. Cause he's certainly done horrific things, but the read I've always gotten from him IS more 'Thanos' than 'standard mad with power Inquisitor'. All the lore I've read on him is that he's one of the few people, because he's focused on fighting the Tyranids so much, to understand just how badly they're going to fuck up the galaxy if they are defended against. Like to quote 'if every bullet from the galaxy is fired and kills a Tyranid, they will still over run it with sheer numbers' fucked. Other characters and figures know the Tyranids are bad, but its Kryptman, Tiberious of the Ultramarines, and the Silent King who really seem to grasp just how bad the threat is.
    Kryptman is unbelievably callous with human life (see letting the 'nids attack inhabited planets, waiting until they're committed, and then Exterminatusing the planet rather than evacuating it) but there is a good reason for it. The same way Bricky noted that Curze is monster but he's also a fascinating monster. Kryptmann realizes that the Tyranids aren't just an invading faction, they're a voracious force of nature and he treats them as such and he's completely willing to put his own hide on the line to try and stop them (see leading teams to capture live genestealers or infiltrating tyranid hive fleets to study and try to disrupt them).
    The problem is, Kryptmann is fighting a desperate battle to save humanity from being devoured but the rest of the Imperium and Inquisition see a guy who's completely lost it with his methods. Plus, Kryptmann did start the Octarious war between Orks and 'nids as a last ditch scheme and time will only tell if that save the Imperium or doomed the galaxy, lol.

    Thus far, we only know of 12 Emperor Class Battleships that have existed in 40k, of which 10 are now remaining:
    Divine Right - seen during the Gothic War. The Divine Right, first the flagship of Battlefleet Artemis, and later the flagship of Battlefleet Gothic, won great renown during the Gothic War.
    Dominus Astra - played a pivotal role in defeating Hive Fleet Behemoth and ending the Battle for Macragge when it entered the heart of the Tyranid fleet and detonated its Warp Drives, dragging the entire Tyranid fleet along with itself into the Warp.
    Enduring Blade -Lost when overrun by demon boarding parties.
    Excelsis Cruor - The Excelsis Cruor that served as the command ship for Lord High Admiral of the Imperial Navy Merelda Pereth. It was one of the few major ships of the line in Terra's orbit following the chaos of the Noctis Aeterna.
    Fist of Righteousness - Led a fleet to relieve the Eldar siege of Kabaal III.
    Indomitable Wrath - Unknown history.
    Inomine Veritas - The Inomine Veritas took part in the Third War for Armageddon.
    Legatus Stygies - Legatus Stygies is an Emperor Class Battleship which was seen in action during the Age of Apostasy where it survived a ramming attack during the Battle of Callavell. It was also seen during the Gothic War; it escaped destruction during the Purgation of Ulthranx and destroyed the Chaos battleship Black Pain.
    Lord of Light - The Lord of Light was part of the fleet of Lord Commander Solar Macharius. Following the near-destruction of his flagship Pax Imperium, a Mars-class Battlecruiser, at the Battle of Charaxdis, his senior staff persuaded Macharius to transfer his flag to the Lord of Light. Following Macharius' death, the Lord of Light was decommissioned and now orbits the Shrine World of Macharia as a tribute in his honour.
    Pax Imperialis - The Kingmaker was a Chaos-corrupted Exorcist-class Grand Cruiser thought to have been lost in the late 41st Millennium while on patrol near Agripinaa, but it appeared four Terran years later as part of a Black Legion fleet that destroyed an Imperial convoy between Cadia and Belis Corona. Afterwards, the Pax Imperialis was charged with destroying the Kingmaker and this began a two-solar-month pursuit that ended in the asteroid belts of the Crinan System. Though normally a grand cruiser would be no match for a full battleship, the Kingmaker had been corrupted by the power of Chaos and managed to hold out long enough for reinforcements to arrive. This caused the Pax Imperialis ' commander, Vice Admiral Chanke, to order a retreat. While the battleship was able to escape, it was forced to leave behind its voidcraft that had been launched to deliver the final blow to the Kingmaker. When the 13th Black Crusade began, the Kingmaker was among the Black Fleet's warships that attacked the Imperial forces defending Cadia. It was there that the grand cruiser clashed with the Pax Imperialis once again, but this time it was the Kingmaker that was forced to retreat, after the battleship severely damaged it. However, when Cadia was lost to Chaos, the Imperial forces escaped from the Cadian System and it is not known what became of the Kingmaker.
    Revenge - The Revenge was the flagship of Battlefleet Demeter and played an important role during the Pandorax Campaign fighting against the fleets of the Black Legion and the Red Corsairs.
    Mercy of the Blade - The Mercy of the Blade is an Imperial Navy Emperor Battleship that serves in Battlefleet Charadon and it took part in the Charadon Campaign, escaping from Typhus as he attempted to invade Forge World Metalica.

    Okay they didn’t quite give tyran Justice in its one sided defense against the tyranids, so I’ll try my best. When the tyranids first showed up on the eastern fringe of the Milky Way they immediately set about invading worlds to replenish the stores on their bio ships. They only attacked worlds with no starfaring sentient xenos at first, but they were packed with everything necessary to make more tyranids. Eventually the tyranids moved to attack tyran, but on the way an exploratory vessel of that world chanced upon seeing the massive fleet of the tyranids approaching tyran and fled back to tyran but not before receiving several wounds to its hull. Warning made it to tyran and it prepared its defenses. You see tyran was a relatively useful and important research and observation base on the eastern fringe, and xenos and barbarian raids are quite probable and often, so the base was stocked with plenty of defenses and ammunition to protect from xenos as well as the monstrous maritime monsters of the ocean world. They had a main facility where the magos who was the planetary governor of the world stayed and pockmarked bunkers, bastions and other fortifications on the outer perimeter, a defense grid of 36 auto cannons and lascannons inceptor class turret implacements defended the site from any external threat. There were also 4 massive laser defense crystals all protected in feet thick silos of ceramite a full imperial guard regiment with some catachan elements and a company of skitarri (can’t remember which type sorry) three full wings of thunderbolt fighters and last of all was a small defense fleet of three small cruisers in orbit. When the tyranids came they were partially obscured by thick clouds of spores and mines millions of my mycetic spores rained from the sky and fell into the ocean, not many made it because of the defense lasers and thunderbolts shooting them down before they could land the cruisers also went to work attacking the tyranid fleet. Soon the tyranids withdrew and the magos became cocky, he ordered the cruisers to advance upon the fleeing tyranid fleet and Harry there forces. After the tyranids had drawn the cruisers away from the defenses the planet had to offer they revealed the full extent of their naval might. Out of the dozens of ships that had been destroyed, there remained thousands to millions more. Immediately a cruiser was destroyed when a tyranid ship belched millions of smaller organisms that burrowed into the ship and melted it the second ship was torn apart by grasping tendrils that pulled it into the maw of a bio ship the third ship however had just enough time to send a warning back to tyran before leech like pseudo pods gnawed through its hull and released swarms of genestealers into its middle and lower decks, the ship was utterly cleaned out and its crew turned to a bloody mass. The ships advanced to tyran once more. Without the aid of the cruisers the spores rained down twice as heavy into the ocean. The great marine creatures were torn asunder with absolutely no difficulty by the tyranids they broke through the water and scrabbled up the walls of the research base the smaller creatures stood absolutely no chance against the auto cannons and much less the lascannons, so the fleet sent out larger foes. The base held on and seemed immovable. Disciplined volleys of lasfire from the guardsman deemed enough to kill the small little protected forms of the lesser gaunts and genestealers. The defense began to crack however as the northern defense laser fell silent after thousands of gargoyles hurled their bodies into the battle of the massive gun choking it. The eastern defense laser fell soon after when a carnifex penetrated the walls of the tower and tore its cooling system apart. The thunderbolts also fell when their engines clogged or when their pilots were ripped from the cockpit screaming by harpies. As the defense withered spores rained onto the base itself. In an hour all of the bastions and bunkers had been destroyed and all of the turrets and defense lasers had gone eerily silent. Even the stalwart catachans attempted to flee to escape a grizzly fate that was in the end unavoidable they died alone and separated picked off by the uncaring zurg. Only the command bunker still stood, but the walls began to crack from the larger bio forms, magos carnal observed the massive unstoppable tide outside of his once impregnable outpost on his few remaining displays. At last the adamantium gate crashed inward and the tyranids rushed inwards. The guardsman fought with flamers and whatever weaponry the could get, sometimes their bare hands. The magos witnessed this all and as the tyranids finally breached the command center where the magos stayed, he sent a data codex of all they had witnessed, everything they knew about the tyranids plummeting into the depths of the outpost, deep into the world where he hoped it would be found by imperials, and maybe give them a fighting chance against the encoming threat of the tyranids, he thought all this as the data codex plummeted into depths of the outpost and as the tyranids closed on the last living soul on the planet. This was the legacy of tyran and what the tyranids were named after. Tyran stands

    According to the book 'Jaghatai Khan: Warhawk of Chogoris,' the construction of the Gloriana class battleship cost Mars 5% of their natural resources to make just one. Not sure if Gloriana-class Battleship is bigger than Emperor class but one thing is for sure, Gloriana class are made for Primarch as their personal ship.

    If you thought this was bad, you should talk about the Devastation of Baal. Literally all the blood angels and their successor chapters fought Leviathan, and at best the Flesh Tearers and main Blood Angels are probably the only ones that still have firstborn marines, and only just barely.

    The tyranids may be a bigger menace to the galaxy than chaos itself. Given what's hinted about their true numbers, it's possible that even a United galaxy, were talking the imperium, chaos and all xenos pointing their guns at the tyranids alone, might not be enough, I'm not even a nid fan.

    The destruction of the emperor class battleship was entirely necessary as if they failed to stop the tyranids the hive fleet would have gotten by far one of the greatest bits of genetic material within the entire galaxy, the genes of a primarch and the emperor himself. The sacrifice of millions of troops and hundreds of ships to prevent the tyranid hive mind from getting primarch DNA is completely justified.

  • @CarMADforever

    So, Swarmlord, depending on how the fleets actually operate (I think it is the surrounded theory, Tyranid Victory in Gothic II shows the Fleets being the tendrils of a greater whole) as subdivisions of the whole or separate entities the basic method of the Swarmlord is the same but the scope is different. The Swarmlord/lords as a conscience has commanded thousands, tens of thousands, millions, billions probably of battles, every victory and every defeat is absorbed into this essence. Every time it comes back it comes back smarter. It is the ire of the hive/fleet made manifest, it's indomitable will and its endless hunger given form.

    51:10 they do work together sometimes, and they seem to each have their own territory. for example, kraken (i think) evolved to fight chaos, and other swarms will conquer planets and leave the biomass to be slurped up by kraken, so it can focus on fighting chaos which is harder cause demons dont usually give biomass.
