Simon Bisley Study Stream

  • Simon Bisley's art is a huge influence on me, and probably my most important early influence when I was trying to find my own way as a young artist at Image Comics. I struggled badly trying to draw in the style that was popular at the time, and Simon's use of hard shadows, and anatomy was a huge revelation for me. We're going to break down his technique, and see what we can take from it and use for our own work.

    I'm catching these all on replay, but I have to say these study streams are so fantastic. It's so incredibly valuable hearing you guys talk so in depth about and deconstruct art processes.

    I wish there was more on drawing environments and background objects like flora, rocks, landscapes. There's an overload of information on drawing figures and specific characters, but not nearly enough about environmental stuff.

    • @JaggedCanvas
      @JaggedCanvas 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can i see your drawings? If you can draw the figure well, drawing environments should be extremely easy. Since you already know perspective by then, everything else is just composition and knowing the cone of vision. There are so many stuff about environments out there. This guy is a comic book artist, why are you looking for designs and environments here in the first place?. Look for environment concept artist dude.

    • @umbranensei9666
      @umbranensei9666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JaggedCanvas Because as a comic book artist you have to understand how to draw environments and landscapes as well..? And it's not the same for comic books as for any environmental concept art. It's an equivalent of saying "just look at classical drawings" if we were talking about comic book characters. Besides, we're clearly thinking of different kinds of environments if you assume that drawing characters alone will give you sufficient enough knowledge to draw them well.

    I met Simon Bisley at San Diego Comic Con in 2000. He was sitting with Glenn Danzig and Julie Strain. He had been working on F.A.K.K 2 at time amongst other things. Cool dude.

    Erick, your screen looked dark because your camera is compensating for the light/reflection that is on the right side of your screen. You can see it shift a little bit when you obscure it with your hand. It's taking that into consideration when making the exposure for the scene. Paper already underexposes a bit with auto-metering systems because they can see it a "bright" rather than "white" and underexpose to try and compensate. The light/reflection is exacerbating that underexposure. Also make sure your camera isn't too close to the point where it can't focus. Not sure what setup you guys are using but every lens has a minimum focus distance that you want to make sure you're respecting to get a sharp image. You guys are so generous to share your work online, I hope this helps improve the presentation. (Photography is my profession.)

    Apparently Simon did this series entirely with felt tip pens- no pencils just straight pen to paper just to save time because these books after issue one were running late. This would explain the manic nature of the art- more so than his other works- but still hes able to make it work- thats how good an artist he is. Growing up in England his art meant the world to me in the 90s- I was obsessed with his work- still am. His Lobo masterpiece is still his Christmas Special.
