- Travis Charest is one of the greatest ar4ists ever to work in illustration. He influenced late 90s, 2000's and beyond more than just about anyone else. His innovative rendering techniques, sense of design, and draftmanship are a huge influence on me,, Steve McNiven, Olivier Coipiel, and many others. This is going to be fun!
Travis is absolutely ridiculous... his finishing (color / painting) are just on another level. I really love these Study Streams. Hearing you really talk about the artist, the art, methodology, etc. is very valuable vs. just reading the chat. Thank you for that.
Literally one of my favorite artist of all time. Love Mr. Charest's work.
As a self-taught comic book creator I'm amazed and grateful for how much I learn from these videos. Is it just me, or were all the superchats toward the end becoming increasingly inconvenient at preventing Mr. Finch from doing the actual artist study? It was frustrating to me anyway, and it would take an obsessive compulsion in order for me to stop working on something and provide an unrelated lesson to every superchat. I'm ashamed to admit that the thought of Mr. Finch having such an obsessive compulsive disorder did occur to me while watching this video, and when it did, the sadist in me wished to have been present at time of recording to have contributed to the onslaught of superchat requests even though my drawing abilities suck so much across the board that I can't think of any particular area to ask for advice on. I'm a horrible person.
Travis is my biggest comic influence till this day. He's fantastic. The amount of dimension, personality and energy he got out of minimal line blew/blows my mind.

I didn't know or realize how much of an influence Travis, was for Dave.
Every time Dave folds his book I sense a great disturbance in the force, as if millions of voices cried out at once.

What a great study of a master by a master. Charest is one of those artists that blew my young mind. It always seemed like he shouldn't be able to do the things he did/does with comic art.
Hi Dave first time watching one of your live studies (sort of live as I live in Europe and don't go to bed at 6am), still I loved it and will probably do more as I paint real time with you on my iPad.

Being an artist that is a bit older than you Dave. What I see on your painting is your Frazetta influence coming through. Regardless of who you use to study. He was the master after all. Period. So it's never a bad thing. My motto is, Never apologize for your art. What I mean by that, it's what you do. If they don't like it. Find some one you do like. Not all art is for everyone, Everytime.
Thank you for doing this, David! I absolutely love the way you analyze Travis' drawings and make sense out of them.
EDIT: That little tuft of hair on the left side of that character (~30:00) may be conducive (?) of him being right handed. So such shapes and curves come out more naturally. Same as if you were drawing that mirrored, of course.

There's actually a piece of Travis' original art via Marvel Masterpieces sketch card up for auction on ebay right now. I wouldn't say his best work, but original art nonetheless. I'm a huge fan of Travis, as well as Jim Lee. They were the ones that REALLY caught my eye back in the day. Awesome video and channel! Love to ya and the community!

1) Travis's Style was SO different I really disked his WildC.a.t.s run, I just didn't appreciate it at the time, especially after following Jim Lee 2) Funny how Dave downplays his place in the echelon of top comic artists, No one can talk drawing and teach like him, and he is the most detailed artist I have seen

I've been trying to find the name of the type of mechanical pencil you're using, but I can't find anything searching everything I can think of including terms like mechanical, pencil, thick lead, artist, drafting, etc. I looked to see if you did a tools upload to explain it, but just found one on inking tools. Hopefully you or someone who's familiar might be able to tell me what to look for.
The pencil is a Staedtler 2mm lead holder with 2H lead :)

Just like to add that Richard Friend was probably *the* best inker of Charest's pencils - other inkers never really seemed to be able to capture the subtley of his pencils in ink and a couple of later fill-in inkers in Street Smart really butchered his work.

another great stream, i’ll recommend for manga, Q Hayashida’s “dorohedero” manga really dark but simple and could get graphic. i think you’ll like it

I paint landscapes but i don't call myself and artist...
I really have to wonder about the real value of this exercise in aping...beyond the novelty for a youtube episode.
Because Travis was (most likely) not approaching his drawings in the same way with the same mentality. He wasn't thinking through all of the lines and shapes, but was probably just feeling it out going on instinct, otherwise all that magic would've been lost looking labored and contrived. You can see that in his convention sketches, which is where I think he shines the most, because they're spontaneously in the moment.
I've heard that he would spend a lot of time just staring at the blank page, essentially putting himself in a trance like state, and then just doing it, letting it flow as if dreaming it out on the paper. Kinda like Kim Jung Gi - it'd be fairly useless to try to reverse engineer his drawing style without approaching it with his mentality of standing and delivering in the moment straight to ink. Yeah you can imitate what's on the surface, like a parrot, but the gold mine is hidden beneath.
I actually like It these streams . It is about what can one learn for Travis not how to copy his or draw from memory like him ... I learned a lot from the frazetta stream we can't draw like him but we learned things like drawing the figures in a way that is interesting to look at ... and I learned a cool way of drawing hair from this stream and having David Pointing out how Travis draws hair made it 100 times easier for a beginner like me .

Consider this: the MOST valuable aspect of any artist is their style. Now what is style? It's their own unique voice, right?
Now consider that Charles Schulz was a billionaire...whom did he draw hair like? And how was his figure drawing or anatomy ANYTHING like Frank Frazetta's?
Ultimately what we love most about an artist, the greats, is that they were enough to be enough, to be themselves. Once upon a time I was a big Travis Charest fan. Not so much anymore. It's kind of funny when looking at the same drawings after so many years, drawings that floored me, bringing me to my knees don't really impress me anymore...because they're not mine. Just as a child learns how to speak and behave by watching and imitating those in their environment, young artists do well to seek out why some art resonates with them. And as a fully matured man who's no longer a child no longer imitates others but has his own mind and heart which his voice and manner proceeds from, you're going to have to grow out of artist hero worship to come into your own. Yeah, Travis draws pretty hair. So what? THIS is how I see hair...
That said, what I think is MOST important in observing very successful artists throughout history is not to imitate their style but to take note how they tuned in to their OWN heart, and followed it.
Here's another way of looking at it:
say there's a young lonely man who sees a husband with a beautiful wife who brings him great honor. And he asks himself, how can I get a woman like that?...maybe it's how he styles his hair, or what he wears, or the way he composes himself? And so he begins to pretend to be someone and something he's not, which leads to all kinds of frustration and failed relationships. When he finally gives up being fake and simply seeks to be himself at all costs, a dream girl he never even knew existed is presented who is so delightful that no one else matters.
I can look at and admire the beauty of Travis' or David's "wife", but in the end I'm so hopelessly in love with my own that no other compares. At that point what is important is getting perspective when things become so terribly dizzying by observing how the Finches maintain such a healthy long lasting relationship that keeps their fire burning, so to speak.

I am not copying... No one is trying to copy this is a stage called (learning) I have to learn how to draw hair to make my one version of it ( there will be no cars if each human had to reinvent the wheel instead of learning it from someone and improving it )
and I do tune what i learn to the tune of my one hart :)
